Pennsylvania nurses are honoring the lives of those who died from COVID-19 while calling on state lawmakers to make changes to hospital staffing requirements.Nurses from across the commonwealth gathered Monday morning outside the state Capitol in Harrisburg to place nearly 1,000 white roses on the steps to honor the 25,000 Pennsylvanians who have died from COVID-19.The nurses also urged lawmakers to pass the Patient Safety Act, which would require hospitals to employ nurse-to-patient ratios that nurses say would be safer. One nurse said it's especially important to pass the legislation now after nurses have endured such a tough year on the front lines of the pandemic."Never have the nurses in a hospital or in any setting have to have done what we really call combat duty," Annmarie Ruggerio said. The nurses said similar staffing requirements have been used successfully in other states, including California. They also said that under the current standards, many patients don't get the care they deserve and nurses suffer from burnout and fatigue.
