Officials ID man shot, killed after driving SUV into local police station

Investigators have publicly identified a man who was shot and killed by police after he drove a vehicle into the front of the Leicester Police Station, rammed the doors and later pointed what appeared to be a firearm at responding officers.Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.'s Office identified the man as Zachary Richardson, 24, of Leicester. “All and all he was a good kid,” said Wayne Dufault, who knew Richardson. “I don’t think anyone really seen it coming.”“He just seems like somebody who may have gone down the wrong path,” said Zackery Squires, who also knew Richardson. Early said Richardson crashed into the front of the station with an SUV at 6:13 a.m. Sunday and then repeatedly drove into the front doors until he gained entry into the building.Leicester police Chief Kenneth Antanavica says the front doors to the police station are made of steel and both open outward. He says the man drove his SUV up the handicap accessible ramp to the front doors and repeatedly rammed the doors until almost his entire vehicle was in the front lobby.According to Early, Richardson exited his vehicle and immediately placed what appeared to be a rifle on his shoulder and aimed it at the responding officers.The police officers then shot the man and rendered medical aid to him until an ambulance arrived a short time later. Richardson was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead."It’s been years that this young man has been struggling with whatever he’s struggling with," said neighbor Kelly Moisan. "I feel bad for his family who has to grieve, but I also feel bad for the police who had to be put into that predicament and I’m just glad that they’re safe."According to Early, Richardson had a pending case in East Brookfield District Court for a traffic violation and a court date scheduled for June 1.The police chief says the two Leicester police officers who were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.The shooting is being investigated by members of the Massachusetts State Police and state police detectives assigned to Early's office.
