Evelyn Jean Garmoe, 92, of New London, died Monday, November 7, 2022 at New London Specialty Care. She was born August 31, 1930 in Burlington, Iowa to Clarence John and Dora Phyllis Harper Weigert. She was a graduate of New London High School and a member of the New London United Methodist Church. Evelyn spent 67 years working for the New London Journal, beginning at age 16 and later becoming office manager and editor retiring in 2015. She loved visiting with the townspeople and writing the news for the paper. She enjoyed watching football, being with her grandkids and family, talking with friends, playing bingo, collecting elephants, and loved her cat Patches. Survivors include her daughter Debbie Titus of Burlington; grandchildren Tara (Andy) Sterba of Riverside and Tony Titus of Maple Park, Illinois; and great-grandchildren Cecelia and Alex Sterba and Gianna Titus. Her parents and brother Richard preceded her in death. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Visitation will begin at noon with the family receiving friends beginning at 1:00 until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Burge Cemetery, New London. Walters, 37, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022 at his home in Burlington, Iowa. Known to many as "Big Mike", a loving, fun, and playful guy who had a heart of gold even bigger than he was. Born June 28, 1927, in Shelbyville, MO, she was the daughter of William Milford and Maude Howerton Hilber. On September 14, 1947, she married Milton Keith Foley in Quincy, IL. He died on June 6, 2019. Joan was a homemaker and did secretarial work at Benner Tea Co. and Yetter Oil Co. She was a very active member of Parkside Baptist Church. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter HU, Des Moines County Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Civic Music, Kings Daughters, Burlington Hospital Auxiliary, Iowa Study Club, Prospect Hill PTA, Room Mother, and a Sunday School Teacher. She was always proud to be a farm girl. Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Dwight) Foley Mulch of Burlington, Kate (Christian) Foley-Beining of Healdsburg, CA; one son, Mark (Michelle) Foley of Grimes, IA; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband of 72 years, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jerry Hilber. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Marion Edwin York passed away on November 3rd at age 89 in his home in Burlington Iowa with family by his side. He was known as Pat to his family, Ed to his friends, and Mr. York to his many students. Ed passed quickly and thankfully did not suffer; he died of complications related to his heart and lungs, and while the past few months were not easy for him, this summer he was still riding his Big Bear, driving his new riding mower, and yelling at speeding cars on Gnahn street. Mr. York was best known for his many years as a biology teacher at Burlington Highschool. He developed advanced laboratory methods for inspiring students to think independently, and the words "fetal pig" will spark mixed memories for many. He understood his teenage students, offering them matches when they snuck out for a smoke and helping graduates hold a 12-kegger party on the Back 40 one year. He received his Master's Degree in Education at Atlanta University, where he felt honored to be in a class of predominantly African American students. He also served in the Army and observed one of the first US fax transmissions in the testing of this new communication technology. He was less known for his conceptual futuristic thinking, but this was important to him, and he predicted trends that came true 20 to 30 years later. In the 1980's he developed a new type of diesel engine oil filtration system and tested it on hundreds of Iowa school buses, proving that the oil never had to be changed and engine performance improved over time. He won best paper at the 1983 Society of Automotive Engineering conference. This summer he was trying to make his case to the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture for farming ideas that he believed would be needed as global climate change progresses. Ed was very proud of his wife Jean and his kids Dave, Denise and Pam and their spouses Robin, Jay and Dave. He frequently mentioned how much he was looking forward to seeing Jean again, who passed in 2015. He also missed his brother Dan and sister Peg who passed in recent years along with his mother Dorothy and father Owen years ago. He has 4 grandchildren Cary, Grant, Mandy, and Blake, and 6 great grandchildren Austin, Haily, Shannon, Maya, Jace and Mayla who called him Big Poppa, and an extended family who he enjoyed living across the street from for many years. Our family loved him dearly even when he was grouchy or ranting about the world today. We will especially remember him for his love of giant sunflowers and all the good times fishing, boating, gardening and building bonfires. We love you Dad, Grandpa, and Big Poppa. Born August 21, 1928, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Cletus and Margaret (Ruff) Beckman. She married John McLaughlin on June 3, 1950. He died February 1, 1989. Betty was a homemaker. She was of the Christian faith. She loved helping and spending time with her grandchildren. She was dedicated to learning God's Word daily.
