Northwest Illinois Audubon Society hosts 3rd Annual World Migratory Bird Day Event

The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will host the Third Annual World Migratory Bird Day event from 10 am to 1 pm on May 13 at the Oakdale Nature Preserve, 4433 S. Cranes Grove Rd, Freeport. The theme for this year’s event is “Water.” This is a Rain-or-Shine event with use of the Mogle Center and the Oakdale Pavilion in addition to the trails. Co-sponsors of this family-friendly event include the University of Illinois Extension and Your Core Being.

Audubon members will lead hourly hikes at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. to bird watch and look for stream creatures. There will also be a yoga session at 11:00 a.m. with Pat Leitzen-Fye from Your Core Being. There will be a migration obstacle course and tables with educational games and crafts. There will be giveaways while supplies last.

World Migratory Bird Day is an annual global campaign that celebrates the migration of birds across countries and continents. This day is traditionally observed on the second Saturdays of May and October, but celebrations are encouraged throughout the year because birds do not migrate on a single day. The theme for each year is determined by a non-profit organization called the Environment for the Americas, which is dedicated to connecting people to bird conservation. In 2023, the campaign is focused on spreading the message that “water sustains bird life” and providing actions for managing water resources and protecting healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Water is fundamental to sustaining life on our planet. Virtually all migratory birds rely on water and its associated habitats at some point during their life cycles. Lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, and coastal waters are all vital for feeding, drinking, or nesting, and as places to rest and refuel during long seasonal migrations. Unfortunately, these aquatic ecosystems are becoming increasingly threatened around the world, and so are the migratory birds that depend on them. The increasing human demand for water, as well as pollution and climate change, is having a direct impact on the quantity and quality of water resources and on the conservation status of many migratory bird species.

The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society was formed in 1971 and chartered in 1972 as a chapter of the National Audubon Society. The chapter's purpose focuses on habitat and wildlife preservation, resource protection, and connecting people with nature.

This event is free and open to the public.
