Northumberland DA: Beware DEA phone scam

SUNBURY — A scam involving an individual posing as a Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) attempted to convince an elderly individual to purchase a gift card in order to pay a fine, according to Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Matulewicz.
In a press release issued Friday, Matulewicz said his office received notice from a manager of an elderly home in Northumberland that an individual attempted the scam by phone and provided the elderly individual with a false identification card.
According to the DEA website, the scams started in the summer.
Federal officials said the public should be aware that DEA personnel do not contact practitioners or members of the public by telephone to demand money or any other form of payment, will not request any personal or sensitive information over the phone and will only notify people of a legitimate investigation or legal action via official letter or in-person.
