The deadly attack struck a devastating war in gaza where more than 40,000 people have been killed and more than 97,000 have been injured according to the hamasrun palestinian ministry of health. M. , one year to the minute that the Hamas Terror Attack began at the Nova Music Festival site down in southern israel, some two miles from the Gaza Border and that site is now just a vast memorial to the roughly 350 people who were killed there. We were there as the sun came up this morning. There was a Memorial Ceremony attended by israeli president isaac herzog, and they played the last track that festival goers heard on October 7th before the music stopped and the shooting started, and you can really tell, jose, this is grief that remains very, very raw one year on as people came to the site where their brothers, sister, friends, husbands, wives were killed and of course, jose, the fact that there are 101 hostages still in gaza is an open wound in israeli society. There are is seven americans in gaza, three of them are confirmed dead, four of them are believed to still be alive. One of them, his name is segi, he is 36 years old and the father of three young girls and i had the opportunity to spend some time with his wife avital who is trying to hold their family together one year without her husband, without the father of her children, and she told me some of the things that their Little Girls ask about their dad. Take a listen. Where is my daddy . Mom he not come back . Why is daddy not here to celebrate our birthday . What do you tell your daughters . My heart is broke, but i need to be strong, so i tell them that i hope daddy is okay. We dont know, but i hope. Jose, avital was 7 months pregnant on October 7th when her husband was kidnapped. She gave birth to their third child . December and segi has never met his Baby Girl, hes never held her, hes never seen her smile. Her name is shahar which is hebrew for dawn. While we were down in the south of Israel Today, we could hear israeli shelling into northern gaza. Israels military has launched yet another operation in the Jabalia Area there, that is, jose, one of the areas that they first entered when the Ground Invasion began nearly a year ago and its a sign of how endless this war feels that once again, they are operating in that same area. For palestinians, there is no Memorial Ceremony today. It is just one more day of trying to survive this seemingly endless, endless war that has now spread beyond southern israel, Beyond Gaza to lebanon, potentially to iran and the fear is it could spread to the whole region. Thank you, colonel, for being with us. Its been a year since that attack. Israels launch of its war in gaza. Whats your assessment of what we have lived through this last year . Every single israeli has been in mourning, but has not been allowed to mourn. Were sitting here now, right before i went on there was a siren here because Yemen Houthis fired another ground to ground missile at israel. We are in a war and have been for a year, and i think that what we feel the worst is that we dont feel that we can see the end, and when i say that this isnt about the israeli government and this isnt about the decision making. It is about the perception of our enemies. Here we are a year into this and i was just watching the Hamas Spokesperson who was talking about all of the achievements, khamenei tweeted out this morning about the wondrous October 7th day that changed everything, and i think that a year on in the clearest voices that i want to start hearing more that i think were hearing more in israel is to call out not just who started it. This isnt about a childs who started it. Its about what these horrific organizations, substate actors like hamas, like hezbollah all backed by iran and what theyre doing. Look at us, were a country in mourning and we cant even do that. Weve had lots of sirens during the day. Hezbollah fired into today, even hamas managed to fire into Israel Today because they want to make a point. They want to show theyre still there, but whats there . All theyve brought is their own destruction and its a horrible situation. Yeah. Lets talk a little bit about that because they, indeed, have brought so much destruction. More than 41,000 people have been killed in gaza. Many of them civilians. Do you think, colonel, any of this death, this destruction could have been avoided . Here we are, its october 7, 2024, and you and i have been talking quite a few times over this last year, and i want to remind all of us, hamas took these people brutally from their homes, children, babies, elderly and have held them ever since. Hamas Every Single Day could bring back those and that assault, that war, trying to get back our israelis from the Gaza Strip would end and they havent done so. They have continued to fire. Not only that, not only firing into israel and holding the hostages, but in the most horrific way. I mean, you take things for granted. Its not like anybody has seen them. I was today on my University Campus where the institute is, and weve had for the last year from October 7th an israeli student who was taken hostage and jose, only today, a year after that event where hes been held hostage for a year, only today did they announce that he was actually killed on October 7th in 2023. How can that be . Because hamas have never said who they have, how they are. Nobody has seen them and we already know from those that have come back, from bodies that they have come back that they are in horrific condition and thats what hamas is doing and it only makes things worse, and its such a somber day. Its such a challenging day for me personally and for everybody in israel to talk about it from hamas points of view, their success is that there are places around the World Today that are saying that what they did was the beginning of a new time, and it was the begin of a new time. It definitely changed israel, but this is not a change to the good. And this change is israel involved in at least five, six different fronts, and you were talking about the houthis. Youre talking about iran. Youre talking about hezbollah and hamas. Where do you see this going forward . When i look at this, israel has been in a multifront war from october, ill say 8th And Today hezbollah, without hassan nasrallah, put out their statement in honor of the greatness of what they are doing. Im being sarcastic, and what they said we joined in on october 8th. They say it very clearly. Weve been in this multifront war for an entire year. Where does it go . The first thing as i am sitting here, jose, that were having a somber day and we here, and we are resilient, and we are holding together and yes, we have lots of challenges, but i do think that in that sense and i say this from the bottom of my heart, im not one who makes these big bombastic statements, that we are standing right now, israel with all of our flaws and pimples, we are standing at the forefront of what people arent willing to say. These horrific, genocidal, Terrorist Organizations like hamas, go read their charter, like hezbollah, and khamenei what they say in persian to their own public and yes, were at the forefront and we will stand strong. It doesnt make it easier for me. Here, i have gone gray over this last year. Its a tough place to be in israel. It isnt that happy country that we used to be, but were resilient and were standing strong and we feel, in that sense, that we really are standing here and will continue to be here for another hundred years. Every day has been worse and worse because the time is piling up, the days are piling and my daughter is in captivity, is in the hands of hamas, has been kidnapped and is there ever since. I mean, every second is worse than the one before because what we heard from the colonel now, what we know the conditions, our concerns and the horrific situation. So today is very bad, but every day is bad and tomorrow will be worse. How do you, as a mother, continue going forward . Theres been no Proof Of Life of naama and certainly not in recent times. What is it that how do you keep going . Well, yes, it is very difficult. We have Proof Of Life of her when she was when the former Hostage Deal and the women hostages that were released and they told us about her and that they saw her, and then we had several times that we did get information and we do know that she is there and alive. We cannot date them, exactly, i cant say. So knowing that she is there, she is alive. She is surviving despite the horrible conditions and despite she is despite that she is deprived of her freedom and her very basic needs, thats what keeps me going. I must on eye cannot break, you know, even if i need to get myself together, and i take, you know, a few hours for that and i must continue fighting for her and being strong for her because shes surviving. I have to survive. I have to be here for my kids that are here. Yeah. So, and i do have a lot of support around, and a lot of family, friends, our Loved Ones in the community. A lot of support from around. What do you what do you want to make sure naama knows today . Naama has to know that we are fighting for her, and we are doing everything we can. We are speaking to whoever we can including here in israel, our Decision Makers including abroad in the u. S. Which is crucial for this whole process to come to an agreement, and to end their captivity and the suffering and the on that, we are doing everything. We are talking to the mediators, to all the media, and this will happen. Naama, you have to know that its taking too long, but it will happen and you will come back home and we will hug you and you will be safe, and you will be able to to heal. Its certainly a message that is important that she hears and all of us hear. Doctor, our solidarity with you and your family. In 2024 tying for the second highest number of hurricanes in a year. Joining us now nbc Meteorologist Bill karins and marisa parra. This went to a cat 4 in just hours. What are you seeing . Wilma was worse and one other one way back. So, yeah, 90mileperhour increase in 24 hours, extremely rare. Its because its a small storm and has a button eye. These storms can grow quicker than big storms and this is different than helene and much smaller and right now about a quarter of the size, but over the next couple of days, the storm as it heads toward florida will increase in size, but at the same time it will likely go from a Category 5 later on today into Tomorrow Morning and then weakening down, i say weakening, quote, unquote, going lower in the categories down to a likely category 3 for landfall as we go through our wednesday evening. I always say adjust one up and prepare for a 4 and maybe if were lucky it will be a 2 when it comes on shore and then it goes through the I4 Corridor and i was in orlando when Charlie Hit and that did a lot of damage even as a category 1. People in florida, you have to prepare, too. Our southernmost model, and the Hurricane Center is thinking theyre not believing this. Theyre trending more with the northern majority of these models and the forecast goes right into areas around pinellas county, clearwater beach, right through Tampa Bay and the Computer Models are similar to that. The timing is anywhere from late wednesday to early thursday. One of the things we are concerned with is the High Tide on the West Coast of florida will be at 6 00 a. M. Thursday morning. So the later it takes to make landfall, the higher the water will be and thats the more damage that can be done with the Storm Surge which will be south of the center. This is already the numbers, theyre saying. Its widespread and we dont know where it will make landfall and it will be cedar keys, southward to fort Myers Beach and this is where it will occur, just south of it. Not only helene whose totals will be a lot smaller. This is a different storm moving in a different direction. Helene went straight on the coast and this is coming in perpendicular. We could worry about fresh Water Flooding and could get seven or eight inches. Wherever this eye makes landfall just south of there, there will be mass destruction. We dont know if it will be as bad as ian was in fort myers, but that potential of a highimpact event looks pretty certain. And bill, thats that whole fort Myers Beach area that was affected from years ago. This is looking like, and you were saying theres a difference than if a hurricane glances you and a hurricane that hits directly headon, and it looks like that area is pretty much the area where all the indicators are its going to be hitting, and then crossing the state still as a hurricane. Yeah. If you notice, they have it all of the way exiting Daytona Beach here, volusia Thursday Morning at 90 miles per hour and if we extrapolate that right at the top of the hour if it holds true. Jose, we had a bunch of hurricanes increase rapidly right before they made landfall and they were a lot stronger and they were at their peak when they made landfall. This is different and this peaks tomorrow and there will be a slow weakening, and we have to hope it sucks in dry air and the upper Level Wind shears it off and it weakens quicker and that could be best case and that is how we could get a category 2 instead of a 3 or 4, but we prepare for the worst, of course. Absolutely. Bill karins, thank you very much. Marisa, you are at the brunt of this and how are people preparing . Preparations look like things we have and havent seen before. We are in Evacuation Zone a and of course, we have some time yet until milton makes landfall wherever it makes landfall. Further down, this is where we saw a lot of flooding with Hurricane Helene just over a week ago. So were seeing the things we normally expect with hurricane preparations. Of course, sandbagging. We talked about the Evacuation Orders and the Evacuation Zones, but something that i think is unique here. Remember, the timeliness of all of this. It was just over a week ago that Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc and it didnt make a direct hit here and it was 100 miles off of the shore and in this entire region they felt the impacts of it and even from that far away and the flooding wreaked havoc on communities that are so vulnerable, jose. So thats one important thing to remember and people are taking this more seriously because they saw what helene did to this community that didnt get a direct hit. Furthermore, there are not only precautions being taken, actions being taken to help make those evacuations easier. We heard governor Ron Desantis that he would open the shoulders of the highways to make it easier. The debris removal. All of those pieces of debris left over from helene are going to be very dangerous whether its wind, flooding or Storm Surge. You do not want that debris floating or being carried by the wind in your direction, so theyre working around the clock 24 7 to get that cleared, but i will make one point, this is something that takes months and they now have days, jose. The biggest impact is a year ago October 7th was the greatest attack on the jewish people since the holocaust. We never believed there would be another moment of 1200 people, men, women, children, grandmothers and babies were murdered and then on october 8th, even before israel had a chance to respond the world came out, many people in the world came out demonstrating against israel and using vile antisemitism. So for us, it was a big shock. Not that hamas did what they wanted to do, but that they were able to pull it off, but the shock was to see the antisemitism in the world, but also we saw the great strength of the idf, the great strength and the heroism of israeli soldiers putting their life on the line and all of them running back not only to save the jewish people of israel and recognizing that were saving the western world because what hamas, Hezbollah And Iran want to do is to wipe out everyone and to see the resolve and the strength of the jewish people and the great miracles that we saw recently that god is protecting the jewish people. We have the contrast, on one hand, the sadness in it, but the tremendous strength and unity. This year has seen so much war since the massacre. Its caused so many casualties, men, Women And Children have died. Gaza has been leveled in many ways. What do you say to people who question Israels Response to this horrible day a year ago . Ive spoken to many soldiers that are actually fighting the war and one of the things they said we want people to realize that what were fighting here is wiping out and getting rid of people of their own goal and their mission in life is to wipe out the jewish people in israel and actually cause Havoc And Pain and destruction to the western world. So the jewish people on the Front Line right now making sure that this doesnt happen October 7th again. Why have so many men, Women And Children have to die . This is a question that we ask Every Single Day. Hamas and their goal is to wipe out the jewish people and cause much death to their own people so they could make their case stronger to the world that we are the terrible people. Thats why we are put in a very unfortunate place. People dying is the last thing we want to do. I speak to a lot of the soldiers and the lost Family Members and one of the things they say is the only way this can end is the threat is gone, and as long as Iran And Hezbollah and hamas is there, and they have their Mission And Theyll go do anything they can to fulfill their mission, we will continuously be in this situation. Israel has a duty to america and the rest of the world to eradicate this terrorism and stand together with the people who want to fight us, but only then will we start seeing peace again in the world.
