She was asked about Donald Trumps lies that haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio, I Cant believe i am saying it again, were stealing, killing, and eating the pets of residence and here is what she said. I know that people are deeply troubled by what is happening to that community in springfield, ohio and its got to stop and weve got to say that you cannot be entrusted with standing behind the seal of the president of the united states of america, engaging in that hateful rhetoric. It is a crying shame, literally, what is happening to those families, those children in that community. Not to mention what is happening in terms of, look, you say you care about law enforcement. Law enforcement resources being put into this because of these serious threats that are being issued. I mean, my heart breaks for this community. A whole Community Put in fear. The Trump Campaign released a Statement Today saying harriss comments about the crying shame, they quote, continue to stoke the flames of violence against President Trump, two days after an Assassination Attempt against him. Vice president harris did say she spoke to former President Trump after the incident on sunday. I checked on him to see if he was okay and i told him what i have said publicly. There is no place for political violence in our country. I am in this election and this race for many reasons including to fight for our democracy and in a democracy there is no place for political violence. We can and should have healthy debates and discussion and disagreements, but not resort to violence to resolve those issues. With that lets get smarter with the help of our Leadoff Panel tonight. On one hand you have politicians making up lies to demonize illegal immigrants and on the other they are calling someone a threat to democracy after they tried to steal an election. Are these really equivalent things . I mean no, not at all. Listen, this is an absurd story. It is an absurd story. It is also absurd to say that because you say something about Donald Trump and j. D. Vance that is completely consistent with their rhetoric, you are inciting violent threats. Obviously No One likes to see this. It is a terrible situation, it is a scary situation, but look. What is amazing about this is it happened less than two days ago and we have already ratcheted it up to a fundraising appeal, back and forth. Even the illusion of a pause in any sort of normal political hostilities is kind of a folly at this point. I think it has sort of become this disturbing background. To what has become a long and obviously kind of exhausting campaign. Even by our bananas standards, it has been a crazy 48 hours. What sticks out to you the most . The phrase that mark used. Normal political hostilities. Because that is not right. It hasnt been the last 48 hours, it has really been the entire election and i dont know when it ends, but there is clearly an escalation and i dont know if any of us really know unless we are clairvoyant where this is going to go, but it is not going to go, too, i suspect, a very happy or sane place. What is interesting to me about the way the story unfolded the last few days is the extent to which the Trump Campaign is doubling down. You are always trying to figure out what campaigns are doing, what they are saying, what they are thinking behind the scenes based on public pronouncements, but there is a theory out there that every day the Trump Campaign talks about immigration and has that be the focus i dont know if i am entirely convinced when you talk to sources around town, but they want to have this conversation. They want to keep the focus on and it might be puzzling, but i think something is going on where they think this might be advantageous to them and I Cant quite figure it out, but maybe we should do some more reporting on it. Lets bring in aaron haynes, editor at large and a msnbc contributor. We just lost her signal. Boys, i am stuck with you. I want to take a listen to Vice President harriss answer on the Economy Today because you know know mattered you know no matter what day of the week it is i want to talk about money. Watch this. The worst unemployment since the great depression. We came in during the worst public Health Epidemic in centuries. We had a lot of work to do to clean up a miss. As of today we created over 16 Million new jobs. 800,000 new manufacturing job. We have the lowest black Unemployment Rate in generations. We have invested in small businesses. All of those things are true and tomorrow the Federal Reserve is expected to cut rates. You are giving me the not so much. It sounds like to me im sorry, what did you say . Im sorry, say that again . Unemployment was trending down when they came in. It had come off its covid Peak And Biden in particular talks about inflation coming in at 9 , but that is not true. Harris did not say at there, but go ahead. I didnt mean to interrupt. Sorry. As long as we are going there, lets stay there for a moment. Its not a good argument the democrats make that unemployment was at a super high level, because the Reason Unemployment was so high was because the country was shut down because of covid. However, even before covid, Unemployment And Productivity under Donald Trump were essentially the same that they were under president obama, so we will just level set there. Lets talk about the presentation Vp Harris is putting forward. Is she now making this pitch of what she is offering, what the future is going to be is capitalism for all or capitalism for the little guy . Is that what her pitch is and do you think it will land . Opportunity is the word she gets using. Opportunity for all and she is clearly committed. What is interesting about the way she talks about the economy as it is always future tense and it is especially acute in her political ads. She is talking about needing to do more to get costs down. More to make groceries affordable. It is all on the Cost Side of the equation. For the better part of the biden administration it was not quite victory laps, but close. The biden Administration And President biden was always asking for credit and it is true that unemployment is at historic lows and stayed at historic lows 433, 34 months. But there was not meeting voters where they are and what you are seeing from harris is nodding at voters that they are struggling, that high prices have affected them and she has a plan. Small Business Tax credits, money for firsttime homebuyers, more Child Tax credits. Shes laid out her economic plan at this point and it involves a lot of tax breaks. Perhaps she is doing that, mark, because she listened to the criticisms of how bidenomics was not working more was not landing. She has listened, pivoted and moved forward and if we are talking about looking to cut costs, lets talk about Donald Trump because literally today Donald Trump came out in public and said your Car Insurance is up 73 and im going to cut that number in half. My question is who is hearing that and saying right on . Is he running to be the ceo of geico because the president of the united states has no involvement in the price of Car Insurance. I want to know how statements like that align with the idea that he is good for everyday peoples economic woes. Mark. While the short answer is they dont. Any real world looking at this, as you mentioned, if he were to run for ceo of geico he might have a more direct Realworld Effect on this. The fact is we are talking about messaging and i hate to use such a Crass Political prism through which we can look at this, but obviously the message about whatever the economy was improving under biden, if it was. There are a lot of indicators you. 2, but it was not landing. It was not effective. Joe biden was not seen as an effective messenger for that and harris, i think, as hans said is trying to be future looking. Whether it will be effective or not, who knows, but what she was doing was rather than get into the minutia of the numbers she is trying to draw a contrast between what things felt like in america in 2020. September, 2020 was a very bleak period in america. Whether unemployment was trending down or what have you at that point and she does want to try to reclaim a trajectory in which she says we are trying to propel this thing forward. We are a much better place than we were at The End of the pandemic. We led the country out of the pandemic and the future is only going to be brighter from here. That is one way she is differentiating herself or trying to from the Biden Record she is part of. Hans in that same vein today Donald Trump said he is bringing back the state and local Tax Deduction and saying it the day before he gives a speech in long island, which People Care about. Places like New York and new Jersey Care a lot about it, but Donald Trump is a person who put a cap on when he was president. Youve been reporting on this. What can you tell us . Pour a margarita out for the republican senators who have to not only stay on sides with trump, but stay on sides with their own position. Donald trump has completely flipflopped. He was the one as you mentioned who said he would cap it. You can only have 10,000 paid for state and local taxes deducted from your federal returns. It hit Blue States hard. The number of republicans on the Senate Side Door within the White House that talked about it that thought they are being mischievous, basically pitting different states against Each Other, punishing Blue States for the high taxes. They loved it. It was republican orthodoxy and this afternoon in a Truth Social Post Donald Trump to the equivalent of saying just kidding. This is not a minor issue. Tease this out over 10 years and it is 1. 2 trillion that it will cost if you do what trump wants to do. Big picture, taking a step back at all the fiscal policies of both candidates, but especially trump, there is a Tax Cut in every pot he is offering. It is Christmas Morning for him and every day, not every day, but consistently he comes up with new Tax Cuts that he is promising with no realistic way to pay for it and take a look at the graphic in the Wall Street Journal. At a certain Point Bond markets are going to revolt and they are not going to like the debt to Gdp Ratios that this country has not seen in peacetime. Did you realize anything about our current moment when you look back at the reporting you did in 2016 . What is striking to me is Donald Trump called this. What was amazing is he said i would roll these people and he meant the republican party, the leaders of the party that supposedly will stand in my way and im going to be the steward of Conservative Policy and so forth. They might be speaking badly about me now. They are going to roll over and im going to bend to my will and that is exactly what happened. I Guess What i was struck by in sort of looking back over these years was the agreement and the degree to which he knew this party would be wrapped around his finger. If Donald Trump had one skillet is an ability to find weakness in people or push entire political parties and rebuild it in his image, which is exactly what he has done with republicans. So funny you say that. His skill is defined the weakness in people and exploit it. We are working on 1898 rules where it was like you are honor bound and now we are in the trump era, so some of the glue is not there. A lot of procedural stuff. Johnson has a history of very dubious arguments. I think the bulwarks are there. I think the democrats are worried about this appropriately and No One in politics, 50 days before an election, passes up a golden fundraising opportunity. So i think everybody is right about Each Other. J. D. Vance and Donald Trump made it clear they dont care in terms of Springfield Ohio if it is an outright lie about the Killing And Stealing of animals. They want immigration to be the Focus Day in and day out, so is there an opportunity for democrats to point out the dangerous, baseless, vile lies they are pushing about springfield and at the same time say Guess What, springfield like lots of other communities has welcomed lots of immigrants legally and they are at a capacity problem. Lets talk about how we can solve that. Is there a way for democrats right now to point out the horrible behavior on trump and Vances Part to say there is an issue and lets start to solve it . I guess trump is doing neither. I think there is a way for democrats to do that and they have to do that because immigration is on peoples minds. At the same time what j. D. Vance has done in lying about his own constituents, hurting the people of his own state, i mean, this man does not even deserve to be a u. S. Senator, you know, when you do that. I think it is really important for democrats to call that out and to make sure that the american people know, hey, these folks are here legally. Just as governor dewine, the republican governor of ohio. They are hardworking people coming here to fill jobs that needed to be filled. Springfield, ohio is only about an hour and a half from where i live and now we have people who have Bomb Threats because of j. D. Vance. Schools in his district are closed down. Despite all of the things he said and the chaos he caused, here is what he said today when talking about attempts to assassinate the former president. Again, two Assassination Attempts in as many months and i think that it is time to say to the democrats, to the media, to everybody that has been attacking this man and trying to censor this man for going on 10 years, cut it out or you are going to get somebody killed. Ive been in politics a long time, about four decades and this guy amazes me and i thought ive seen it all. I personally know about it because in 2017 j. D. Vance called me up and asked me about running a campaign for u. S. Senate as an antitrump republican. Hold on, hold on, slow this down. He called you on the phone and said what . I want to run for senate in the republican primary. I said sure, lets do it. Going to be uphill, probably going to lose. Little did i know that the next thing he is looking up faust on google and making the master plan. It is so corrosive, but i know the strategy behind it. He is doing the pro wrestling villain. J. Reporter in an indictment unsealed this morning, federal prosecutors say since 2008 combs abused, threatened and coerced women around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct. Is alleged when he did not get his way he was violent and subjected victims to physical, emotional and verbal abuse. The arrest comes six months after federal Authorities Rated the grammy Winners Homes in Los Angeles and miami. Today revealing what they say they found. Firearms including three ar 15s in his Bedroom Closet and videos of elaborately produced sexual performances with multiple victims known as free cops according to prosecutors. They sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple Commercial Sex Workers and often a variety of narcotics such as ketamine, ecstasy and ghb, which combs distributed to the victims to keep them obedient and compliant. I think the biggest piece of the indictment we will be paying attention to is racketeering. Combs was operating these other illegal activities that were going on and taking place and occurring at a federal level because he was bringing people across State Lines for the solicit and illegal activity and i think the Racketeering Pieces the piece that the southern district of New York is probably going to get the most bang for its buck because that will open the door for more witnesses, more evidence and potentially more arrests. What is the likelihood that his lawyers basically say the freak off, this is celebrity debauchery, but not a crime . Will they have success making that argument . Tomorrow they will appeal and try to get him out on bail again. I suspect that at some point you will hear the Arguments Transition to say listen, in hollywood people may do weird things and have a good time, but that does not make it illegal. The response is going to be the extensive investigation conducted by the fbi, by Homeland Security and other federal agencies to gather enough evidence against sean combs to make the case ironclad. Look, you are bringing in people from across State Lines. You are kidnapping people against their will. You are distributing narcotics, controlled substances to Sex Workers for the purpose of keeping them docile and obedient so you could perform these acts. Is this a weird science moment. No way, nebraska. A good, kind and decent person and most people are. We want a better america and we have to show people by example rather than force them. You write about the importance of the word freedom, freedom to americans, it does very well in polling. We are seeing the campaign start to use freedom as a centerpiece of the campaign. Do you think it is connected . Absolutely, it is the number one principle that america is the Land Of Freedom. Everyone would say yes, freedom is a fundamental american value and then it depends on how we look at it. For me i say lets use these fundamentals, america being the Land Of Freedom as the first one as a roadmap. Use them as guideposts to say this is how we use america and how we will get out of this moment. Then use those as a lens in which to look at the country moving forward and you say all right, does this piece of legislation, does this Legislator Fix into america as the Land Of Freedom and you say okay, i am looking at these abortion laws. Looking at telling people they cant have what they need and they die, is that freedom to you . It doesnt matter where you sit on the political spectrum, you will probably say that does not make me feel free if you can tell me that my rights changed based on my zip code.
