Any moment now the suspect is due to make his first appearance in federal court. What were learning about his digital footprint and political leanings. Plus the acting head of the Secret Service in florida here this morning as Law Enforcement pieces together what exactly happened on this West Palm Beach Golf Course. This as the Secret Service comes under a microscope again. How did anyone get so close to the former president , just a couple of months after the first Assassination Attempt . Im Ana Cabrera reporting from New York alongside my colleague, Jose Diazbalart, who is live in West Palm Beach, florida, this morning as we cover the second apparent Assassination Attempt on former president Donald Trump. Jose . Happening right now here in florida, the suspect behind the attempted assassination is making his first appearance in a federal courthouse and a short time ago the acting secret Service Director arrived right here at trumps Golf Course where he will be greeted and briefed from local and federal Law Enforcement officers and will do a walk through of the Course Right behind me, ana. Lets bring in our team of reporters and analysts to talk more about what were learning this morning. Joining us is nbc News Justice and Intelligence Correspondent ken dilanian, bobby chick own, a former Secret Service special agent and nbcs Jessie Kirsch also live in florida. Lets start there with jose and jesse. Thank you very much, ana. Jesse, right here we are just feet from the entrance of trump international Golf Course where this incident occurred yesterday. What do we know as of right now about the person who was apprehended . Reporter and for context, jose, this is the entrance down that way to our left is where we saw much of the Police Activity last night. What i can tell you and you can see it right here, the shrubs are very high and very thick. Authorities told us someone was able to get through the shrubbery and be in a position where a Gun Barrel was sticking out toward the Golf Course. According to authorities at a Press Conference Yesterday the way that the Secret Service operates when the former president plays golf and we know he does that often, is that there will be an agent that goes a hole ahead of him and scouts out, surveys the area ahead of him. During that Survey A Hole ahead of former President Trump a secret Service Agent saw the Gun Barrel and engaged with a person. The secret Service Shot at this person. That person then took off and was able to get 40 minutes up the Road North of here. Here is what are the of what we heard from authorities about what they found on the scene here. In the bushes where this guy was is an Ak47style Rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had Ceramic Tile in them, and a Go Pro which he was going to take pictures of. Reporter so thats what we heard from officials here in Palm Beach county. As you mentioned, the Secret Service Acting Director is in Florida Today and there are questions about what might change about the Security Apparatus around the former president moving forward. President biden a short time ago speaking to reporters says that he thinks the Secret Service needs more resources. Ana, before we go back to you i want to i know or crack cameraman, this is the front entrance of the international Golf Club and what jessie is referring to is the shrubbery that goes all the way down the block. Reporter and around the primmer. And around the perimeter of the area. So this person had to somewhere cross into that and then go into what was a Chainlink Fence because there are a number of fences in there. Ana, this is the entrance part, this is a very large Golf Course and this person was able to park their car close by and then what jessie tells us happened happened. Now we are learning more about the man who is in police custody, taken alive and making his Court Appearance as we speak. Ken, what are we learning about the Suspects Background and the federal probe into what happened . Ana, Ryan Wesley Routh is 58 years old, appears to have lived recently in hawaii where his Linkedin Profile says he ran a Shed Building company. The profile also says that he studied at North Carolina agricultural and technical State University and graduated with an Engineering Degree in 1998 88, sorry. Routh spent many years in North Carolina where public records show he has a long history of runins with the law, including Felony Charges of receiving stolen property and even possession of a Weapon Of Mass Destruction, unclear what that was about. He was also charged with multiple misdemeanors including hit and run, resisting arrest and a concealed weapons violation. Its unclear at the moment whether he has the kind of Felony Conviction on his record that would have prohibited him from owning a gun. But unlike the shooter in butler, pennsylvania, routh has an extensive public social Media History and on his Twitter Account he said that he supported then Candidate Trump in 2016 but became disillusioned, its unclear if this is one of the reasons but routh became very passionate about supporting ukraine in its war with russia and even traveled to kyiv in an attempt to sign up to fight in combat. There is a Video Online of him talking to journalists in kyiv, he said because he was 66 at the time with no Military Training the ukrainians didnt accept him. He says he then began trying to recruit expatriots to fight in ukraine including afghan soldiers. In the interview he sounds fairly articulate in measure. There is even evidence that he wrote a selfpublished book on amazon, but his Twitter Account includes bizarre fwhafr, including a tweet where he invites kim jongun to hawaii. Law enforcement officials says when he was captured he didnt say much and didnt appear to be surprised. Its unclear now if hes cooperating now that the fbi has taken over the investigation. Thats one of the reasons we are asking today. Okay. Ken dilanian, thank you so much. Were talking about two apparent Assassination Attempts in as many months. What are your biggest questions this morning . You know, its really interesting because we are looking at two attempted assassinations within just a few months. Typically we see them spread out within decades. I think whats interesting right now is you see the Acting Director of the u. S. Secret service going straight to the location of the incident and i would think hes collecting his information and preparing because hes likely going to be in front of congress yet again explaining what happened. I would think he wants to get all of his information in order so that he can give that information up front and giving that information quickly and transparently is probably really going to help. The other thing you want to think about is weve got two more months, multiple candidates, things are escalating to some degree. In some way i am not surprised. Copy cats are a concern when it comes to this. Once you see somebody do something, other people look and think, hey, i think i can do that. You know what else is interesting, jose, as you were kind of just scanning out with the cameraman and looking at the bushes, you said something. There is a fence here. When we look at the photo of that fence, look how very fragile and simple that fence is. Think about maybe how much closer he would have gotten if that simple Fence Wasnt there. A fence like that, you can climb over it. Psychologically it maybe has helped stop and keep him out further but its really not that great of a barrier when it comes to physical protection. Evy, this is a suspect who has quite the rap sheet, more than 100 charges in the past. We know he had convictions on gun crimes for possession of a Weapon Of Mass Destruction in the past, convictions of carrying a concealed weapon and then you have the digital footprint where we saw in 2020 he writes to Donald Trumps twitter handle, quote, while you were my choice in 2016 i and the world hope that President Trump would be different and better than the candidate. But we all were greatly disappointment obviously that was a typo in his tweet and it seems that you are getting worse and devolving. He adds, i will be glad when youre gone. Should this guy have been on the radar as a potential threat to trump . I dont know. For you to really get on the radar you have to make a direct threat to the president. Quite honestly with Social Media its so prolific. Before the u. S. Secret service had to worry about somebody writing a letter n fact, they had the biggest Ink Bank in the world because they would get threat letters against the president and they would examine the ink, where did that ink come from, where did the pen come from and what year was that pen made so they could track down a person. Now you are looking at all of these Social Media platforms. Where do you look first . Its probably most likely going to get flagged by the social Media Provider that platform but if theyre looking through so many things its going to be an issue. He does hit all the markers, previous Run Inn with Law Enforcement, writing manifestos, i look at them like the manifestos or writing information and sharing these prolific things. Earlier when the correspondent was talking about how he articulates himself well, it doesnt mean that youre not going to be able to articulate your thoughts. These people usually unhealthy, Mental Health issues, these attachments to vips, you can see him trying to go into the war in ukraine. You see a person trying to look for purpose, trying to make a mark in their life at this point. You kind of look at all these markers here and it does stick out and hits a lot of them. Bobby, Given What was found at the fence, and lets talk a little bit about that, theres the two backpacks, theres the Go Pro inside apparently the backpacks, there were some Ceramic Tiles which could in some way be thought of as possible kind of defense from bullets. What does the rifle, the semiautomatic long gun, the two backpacks, the Go Pro and those tell you. It tells me he planned this very well. Ceramic plates which i used to wear on my kevlar are thick and made to withstand safe fire coming back at you particularly from snipeR Rifles. You see how his set his rifle between them for protection. Those surrounding plates are there for protection for him for getting a shot. He has the Go Pro on the fence, you can see that in the direction of where hes going to take the shot. It deals me he wanted to not only do this but wanted attention to it, wanted to live Stream Or Tape it so he could post it later. He may have it now that hes going to be appearing in federal court. You can see from his Social Media posts he likes to hear himself talk, he likes to have his opinion out there and put it out there. Idealogically he is a little scattered, but he likes to get his opinion out there. It tells me this is somebody who wants attention. He didnt intend to die in in event. He wants a platform to speak for whateveR Reason and whatever ideology he wants to spew. Now were talking, bobby, about two separate Assassination Attempts in just the last couple of months. Are you worried about more attempts and the overall heated political landscape that we find ourselves in still with, well, a couple months until Election Day . I am, and, you know, i did the advanced security for the fbi here in Los Angeles where we did the oscars and the grammys and the rose bowl parade. Every venue is different and it presents different Security Challenges and so, you know, our traditional politicians out in the public Shaking Hands and kissing babies is one that we hold dear, it used to be on the back of a Train Town to town. So these politicians like to get out there and weve seen both of our main candidates doing that in small venues, Shaking Hands of people, meeting with the public, thats our tradition. We dont want our politicians in a bubble, we want to feel they come from us and are elected from the people. I think down the stretch theyre going to continue to do that, i think security has to be flexible and has to be on top of it. I think they were in this case, that Perimeter Team that interacted with this guy did their job, thats why theyre going a step ahead of the candidate because they can interact with somebody they come across and it worked exactly as it should in this case. Bobby, were learning that the acting secret Service Director just departed the Golf Course there in west baum beach. Quick question as this investigation proceeds. What are your biggest questions this morning . My biggest question, Number One s how he knew trump was going to be there. Was the schedule publicized . Is this a habit that he always plays on Sunday Morning . How he knew to be in that place at that time because one of the things you can do for security is keep op sec quiet, dont publish a schedule or tell people where hes going to be, just have him show up. That helps in security. I want to know how he knew to be in that place at that time. Bobby, thank you. Evy, youre back with us next hour, thank you as well. Jose . Joining us now is Dave Aronberg State attorney for Palm Beach county, florida. Always a pleasure to see you. This occurred in your jurisdiction. You said that the suspect will now face federal, not state charges. Why . Good to be with you, jose. Likewise. Originally we were going to Pursuit State charges, doing the warrants, processing them, going to request pretrialeR Retention. When the feds came in and said they were going to assert jurisdiction we said, great, with he stood down. Thats normal. When the feds want to take a case we defer to them, there are no turf bars here. Dave, take us back if you would to your extraordinary Depth And Knowledge and vocation of service. What are the steps that are carried on behind the scenes when something like this occurred . Youre intricately involved in it. Can you take us a little bit behind what happened and what you learned, how you learn it and the steps taken by officials. Thank you for the nice words about my service. Im on the job for the next three months. Nick bradshaw does a tremendous job. You saw him at the Press Conference Yesterday. He was the coordinator in this. We met with him in his mobile unit, mobile van, the feds were there, all around the table just as you would expect us to be. We were talking back and forth about what the next steps should be. I said, then, with the sheriff that i was going to go ahead and pursue the warrants and make sure that we have pretrial detention and the feds were good with that. Afterwards they said they were going to pursue the charges. The key is the coordination between local, state and federal authorities. You expect that to happen but it doesnt always happen. Right. I think that says a lot about the u. S. Attorney here, the fbi and of course the sheriff to bring us all together. What are the possible charges that this person is facing . Im just wondering it was a relatively quick process of finding and detaining him, but it was still 45 minutes after and he was heading north on i95. Looks like he was headed back to North Carolina. He was just driving north, fortunately we had a good samaritan who got the license plate number, the make of the week and he was stopped by Martin County Police and transferred back to Palm Beach county. As far as charges, im speculating here, but it looks like the feds have good grounds to charge him with being an exfelon in possession of a firearm, thats a serious charge and relatively easy to prove. Its punishable of up to ten years in prison, theres also the aggravated assault against a federal Law Enforcement officer, the pointing of the Ak47style Rifle at a secret Service Agent, which is being alleged, that can get you up to 20 years in prison. Then there is the federal statute on threats against a former president that can get you up to five years in prison but we still have to look at the writings, the Social Media posts of this guy and the investigation continues. So the suspect has a digital complicated digital footprint, he apparently voted for trump in 2016, he was against him, there was some donations to democratic causes, obviously this is really too early yet, but is there a way to see any kind of motivational thread in any of the things that you all have found so far . Or you can explain it as the fact that this guy has a screw loose. I mean, normal people dont do what he did. Doesnt mean hes legally insane under the law, thats a higher burden. The fact that he fled means he knew the difference between right and wrong, its going to be hard to establish an insanity defense. Here is a guy who just goes all out for everything. He leaves a wake according to reports of creditors behind, he is someone who is seen as potentially volatile, hes out there trying to recruit afghans to fight in ukraine. Whats ironic is it seems like his great motivation was the war in ukraine where he described it as good versus evil and i agree with you, i think its easy to see the that the ukrainians are The Good Guys here but that same guy also tried to murder the expresident. That is an evil act. Theres a disconnect there. You talked about motive in the past and how that plays a part or doesnt in any kind of future prosecution. The fact that he had those two backpacks, those Ceramic Tiles in between the long weapon and then the Go Pro that was already put on to that fence, what does that tell you and does that have any Weight Future going . Yeah, you could charge someone with various crimes, perhaps an attempted murder, without having a shot fired. If you had gone through the planning and have done something substantially to effectuate that, so you dont have to have a shot fired, but because the former president was so far away, 300 to 500 yards away on different hole i think its going to be tough to charge him with a crime against trump. Much easier to charge him with a crime against a secret Service Agent who apparently saw the rifle pointed at him. Thats the key witness here and that would be perhaps the most serious charge. Nbc news white House Correspondent Monica alba joins us this morning. Monica, good morning. What do we know and what are we hearing from the White House this morning . Reporter well, its something, jose and ana, where we saw a version of this back in july with the president directing the Secret Service, asking this agency that he oversees to make sure that all resources are directed and continue to be used to protect the former president and that is something that he is now repeating and saying that he even more forcefully is pushing for that to become a reality and the president was just departing the White House a short time ago for delaware and a Day Trip to pennsylvania later in the day, and he was asked about this and he said specifically hes calling on congress to look at the idea of more funding for potentially more personnel foR Requests like this, but overall he said that there is a larger issue about the status of these resources and protecting former President S and all the other people that the Secret Service is responsible for protecting when you look at former top officials. And of course in addition to all of that, right now they are very focused on the president and the Vice President as well and that will continue and for her part the vice President Said last night in a statement that theres no place for any kind of violence in america and theyre letting those kinds of official statements from the White House speak in terms of where they are today and what they hope to see happen very soon here, jose and ana. Monica, help us understand sort of the structure and layers here and the specific involvement the White House might have in trumps Secret Service protection and the role they may have as this investigation unfolds. Reporter it would be up to any sitting president to oversee and authorize how that works in terms of this agency that of course is a larger part of the department of justice. And the allocation of resources and funding, thats a larger question for congress. So that is why you have President Biden sitting at the nexus of this because Hes Somebody who of course will continue in these conversations and negotiations, as we know, just a couple of weeks from now there could be a partial Government Shutdown if they dont have an agreement so there will likely be way for Attention And Scrutiny on the part of this that could go towards more funding for these efforts. The president , again, very clear on where he stands there and saying that hes very relieved that former President Trump was unharmed by this and that nobody should have to face this kind of political violence. There is no space for it at all, i think you will expect to hear that same message from them throughout the day. Monica alba, thank you for youR Reporting. After the first incident in butler, pennsylvania, director Kimberly Cheatle stepped down from her post with Acting Director Ronald Rowe taking over. He is here this morning in florida where he is sure to face lots of questions about The Agency. Nbcs Hallie Jackson has more on the state of the Secret Service. Hallie . Reporter this morning new questions being raised about the Secret Service after what the fbi described as an apparent Assassination Attempt on former President Trump. We live in dangerous times. Reporter it comes just about two months after the first one at a rally in butler, pennsylvania. This time officials say an agent opened fire after spotting a rifle near the former President S Golf Course in South Florida while mr. Trump was playing. He is not the sitting president. If he was we would have had this entire Golf Course surrounded. The Secret Service did exactly what they should have done. Reporter The Agency has added personnel to mr. Trumps protective detail since the Butler Shooting and they are also shooting more bulletproof glass at certain outdoor events. Lawmakers in both parties praising the Secret Service for its quick response while questioning whether more should be done. We need to be taking a serious look at whether we are allocating resources correctly, do we need more secret Service Agents. The idea there has been two attempts and they have been able to get close enough to the former president is deeply disturbing. Im concerned that Donald Trump is actually not dead. Reporter what happened sunday a contrast to the attempted assassination in july. In florida officials say mr. Trump was 300 to 500 yards from where the weapon was spotted and walked away unharmed. In pennsylvania the shooter was about 150 yards at a publicly announced event and fired a shot that injured the former President S ear. The Secret Service has acknowledged a systematic breakdown in butler with Kimberly Cheatle resigning as The Agencys chief a day after taking heat from both parties on capitol hill. You are full of [ bleep ] today. You have an Assassination Attempt on a president , a former president or a candidate, you need to resign. Reporter just days ago the acting secret Service Director briefing lawmakers about the Pennsylvania Attack after a bipartisan Task Force opened an investigation. Are you confident that today Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are safe given their Security Details . Just wondering, bobby, not one but two apparent Assassination Attempts against the former president in just over two months. First of all, how does someone get that close and, bobby, when you look at this whole area how does someone like that get close and then how does it even know that the former president is going to be there . Yeah, excellent question, jose. Thanks for having me today. Again, very troubling. When we spoke about eight weeks ago we had a 20yearold young man get on top of the roof and be within 150 yards. Here we have Somebody Hiding in the bushes with a highpowered rifle who from what im hearing was 500 to 600 yards close to the president while he was on the Golf Course. These outdoor venues that we spoke about a while back also have very, very difficult to secure. You cant really shut down the whole Golf Course, you want to come up with a plan on how to kind of work in a roving bubble so that there are agents securing the hole ahead of the former president in this case, agents securing the hole he is on and agents securing the hole behind him. So some very good work by the agent or agents that were at the hole ahead of the former President Sweeping and being able to see that Rifle Protruding from the foliage. Bobby, we are told that the Golf Outing was not preplanned, an official calling it, quote, an off the record protectee movement. Can you speak to the differences in protection for someone like this, in this kind of a situation, compared to an event that may be scheduled in advance . Sure. As you know on the Record Movements deal with schedules that are published either by the former President S office or on his website, they are events that are known to the public, they may have an audience, they may be ticketed. Theyre known and are on the schedule at a particular time. Off the Record Movement is the president decided Yesterday Morning to go golfing and came out and told his Secret Service detail that he was going to go golfing, thats the main question here is how did this individual know if this was a true off the Record Movement how did he know that the former president was going to be at this location. So that is also a concern looking at it through my lens as a former agent. Right. But are the challenges different when you have a Preplanned Event that you can scope out in advance versus something more spur of the moment, hey, i want to go golfing. The challenges are a little bit different. The known events give us more rigidity in whats going on, schedule, who you to set up Medal Detectors and things of that nature. An off the Record Movement is not known to anybody so in one way its a little bit easier to not have it out in the open so that people will be showing up just throughout the course of the day, but in this situation this individual knew enough to be at that Golf Course while the president was there in what im hearing was an off the Record Movement. A little bit troubling there as to how he knew that the former president was going to be at that location. Thats a question that im sure is going to be asked over and over again. Bobby, what weve learned so far about trumps Security Apparatus, the machinery around the former president , were talking about a counterassault team, countersurveillance teams, Countersniper Teams as well as a protective intelligence unit, also drone contingent plus his actual president ial protective detail of shift agents. What more could or should have been added . Well, again, i think that all of those things are in place, have been augmented since July 13th. I think youre also seeing other assets that we are not that are not visible to us enhancing his protective detail and his protective platform. Im thinking that as we continue to move forward and now that we have these two incidents, there shouldnt be any assets that are available for the Secret Service level in the garage at this point and not being utilized. You know, when we came out of July 13th we had the Republican And Democratic convention as national special security events. This week up in New York the Secret Service is handling the United Nations General Assembly of 150 to 180 Heads Of State that come in every year and then we have the homestretch to the election in november. So this is a very, very busy time for the Secret Service, but this is what the Secret Service does. We do it well, we didnt do it well on July 13th but we need to get out there and make sure that we are providing a seamless, nofail protective apparatus for all of our protectees each and every day. We are back and i want to show a live picture of that courthouse where we have an update from the Court Appearance of this suspect involved in the second apparent Assassination Attempt of Donald Trump there at the courthouse. We are told court is in a Brief Recess, the suspect was brought in earlier with other defendants who will have their Appearances Today and he was brought back out. Hes supposed to be the next person up. His case specifically. We are told he came in shackles, he was wearing a Dark Blue Jail Attire of some sort, his demeanor, he seemed not bothered, nonchalant. Court in a Brief Recess before the suspect faces the judge. We will keep you posted as we have updates from that courtroom. Of course its already been a tense 2024 campaign, just further volt this had weekend by this second apparent Assassination Attempt against former President Trump at his florida Golf Course. We still dont know the motive, but federal officials have been warning for years about the rise of domestic extremism, political violence and Lone Wolf radicalization. From trump, the Supreme Court down to local election officials, threats have been skyrocketing resulting in a really unprecedented and at times scary political season. As we heard that Secret Service official put it earlier this hour, we live in dangerous times. Lets discuss more about this with Nbc News senior national Politics Reporter Jonathan Allen and a pair of our msnbc political analysts, former democratic congresswoman Donna Edwards and formeR Republican congressman Carlos Car bellow. Jonathan, whats the feeling within the Trump Campaign and his Inner Circle after this second attempt as they look forward to the 50 days left in this campaign . From the folks i have talked to the feeling is relief. There is a feeling of confidence in the Secret Service detail and the work this he did particularly in light of what happened about ten weeks ago in butler, pennsylvania, when the former president was actually shot in the ear. So i think theyre feeling good about about the security since then. I think there is concern first for the former President S safety, obviously two Assassination Attempts in such a short period of time oR Really over any period of time is something that would be harrowing for any candidate and for any candidates staff. You know, the message that was sent out from the campaign to leaders to the staff last night in an email emphasize safety and security. So i think, you know, i would just say that theres a little bit of a pause right now, you know, the president former president himself is reportedly in a pretty good mood last night, taking calls from people who were wishing him well, but, you know, we have not seen him out in front of a camera yet, we have not seen him, you know, seizing a political opportunity aside from, you know, the Campaigns Fundraising emails. So i think right now theyre Breathing A Sigh of relief more than anything. John, these are two venues that are very closely tied to trump, outdooR Rallies and then Golf Courses. He owns a number of them. Could this, you think, further alter his movements or where he appears or doesnt appear in the next 50 days . You know, i think theres obviously going to be as much caution as possible, precaution as possible, in this case, you know, its not each clear that the attempted assassin was able to get a shot off. You know, as compared to the last time. So that seems to be getting better. Im not hearing anything about a change to his plans. I suspect in terms of rallies and the actual campaign activities you wont see a change. Perhaps some of the Golfing Venues will be swept a little better beforehand. Donna, as far as the Vice President and heR Responses so far, she had an official statement, she also posted on x in her official capacity as Vice President. How do you see this incident complicating the balance she has to strike as a sitting Vice President and president ial candidate . Well, first of all, i dont think theres a balance when it comes to political violence and i think the Vice President , heR Running mate, Tim Walz and others, have been really clear that there is a bright line when it comes to political violence and i think that the tone that theyre striking is the appropriate one. You know, we all have to in this environment really, you know, sort of watch the rhetoric and the tone because it seems to spur a lot of people who may have different kinds of motivations or things going on in their lives. You know, we have a lot to learn about this, but i think the tone struck by the Vice President is exactly the right one both on the Campaign Trail and in her official capacity. Carlos, do you think that in this final stretch of the campaign there is something that should or could be done to bring down the temperature of our national discourse . Well, jose, the former president certainly could do a lot to make himself safer, to make it less likely that people would become radicalized to this point. After the first Assassination Attempt Donald Trump said he was going to adopt a different tone. He said he was going to try to unite the country, bring people together, lower the temperature and the volume. That lasted for a couple days until his speech at his convention. Here the former president has another opportunity, after surviving yet another Assassination Attempt, to show the country a better way forward, to lower the Rhetoric Torques lower the tone, to use less aggressive language in his speech so that we as a country can move forward in a more peaceful and nonviolent way. John, just before this happened a lot of the News Cycle was consumed by Conspiracy Theories that were being pushed out and proliferated by jump, j. D. Vance, his running mate, and the campaign and were in faR Right circles, specifically when it came to springfield, ohio, the target of the Conspiracy Theory about haitian immigrants. Trump and j. D. Vance continuing to amplify the claims there even after they have been debunked. Is this a strategic Campaign Calculation on their part . Ana, they certainly want to point to immigration as an area of emphasis for the Trump Campaign and they absolutely believe that pointing to springfield, ohio, is a way to do that. You know, the rhetoric around that has been hateful, you know, it echos long existing Dog Whistles about certain immigrant communities in the united states. There are a lot of legal haitian immigrants in ohio, even though Donald Trump says what hes trying to do is crack down on illegal immigration, that gets conflated very easily. There are no saints in terms of right now in terms of, you know in terms of a level of political rhetoric around a campaign, but, you know, none of what Donald Trump has said about immigrants justifies somebody taking a shot at him or attempting to take a shot at him. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are condemning the incident and demanding answers from the Secret Service. This morning the acting secret Service Director visited the Golf Course right behind me just days after he briefed members of the house Task Force investigating the first attempted assassination against the former president just nine weeks ago. And joining us now democratic congressman Glenn Ivey of maryland who serves on that congressional Task Force. Congressman, good to have you here. What does Yesterdays Incident now mean for your probe into what happened in butler . Well, well see. I mean, i know were setting up a briefing with the Secret Service to find out what happened and also to see if there are any connections or links. I think there will be from the standpoint of making sure protection thats being provided currently is what it needs to be and has to be to keep everybody safe during this time frame. But we wont take over that investigation unless and until the house allows us to do that. The scope of our investigation was set by the vote of 4160 with respect to the first attempted assassination, but that hasnt happened on this one that took Place Yesterday yet. Congressman, the top Republican And Democrat on your Task Force have both asked for a briefing with the Secret Service. What questions do you want ad dressed . I think we want the overall explanation of what happened and where things stand, but, i mean, you know, from my perspective i certainly have questions about the perimeter of the Golf Course and i know Golf Courses are very large and its hard to provide protection around the scope of it, but i would like to know more about what the approach was with the Secret Service on that front. Another open question that i had was towards the timing of all of this. Apparently the former president had not announced that he was going to be golfing during that time yesterday. You know, how did this Guy Know or did he know . Maybe he just happened to be sort of following the motorcade. You know, im not exactly sure where he got the information from, but id like to know about that as well. And this morning President Biden said congress should do more to ensure the Secret Service has the support it needs. What are your thoughts on that . I think its pretty clear that the Secret Service needs an additional supplemental to help fund what theyre trying to do now. Its going to be hard to get new agents to come in and train in this what do we have 50 something days left. Thats not a possibility. But there are additional resources that they have that they can bring to bear, i think some of thats classified. We want to make sure that there are no financial barriers to that. And also when they bring in assistance from state and local Law Enforcement when theyre providing you know, to expand the range of protection that theyre providing, i think its helpful to be able to reimburse those agencies where appropriate. And then there are other things like overtime and the like that we should take care of. But the bottom line, i think, is weve got to be absolutely sure that there is no Barrier Set by resources providing the protection that the candidates need and also at these rallies and events that the spectators need to receive as well. Congressman, we are about 50 days from the election. Are you confident that the Secret Service can protect both candidates safely and, congressman, real quick, what your question was about, you know, how that person was able to be there when it was an unannounced thing. This thing is huge. We are right in front of the entrance, you can see these two big black gates there, the entrance and the exit, but the entire perimeter of this is surrounded by huge bushes and trees. Are you expecting and would you like to come down here with your committee to do what you did in butler just a few weeks ago . Yeah, that may make sense. I think we will have to see if we get assigned to take this on, but, you know, another aspect of your point is that, you know, selection of where the candidates are going i think is important for us to take into account as well. When i had a chance to visit butler, my first thought was, this is not a good site to have a rally from a Protection Standpoint because you had so many rooftops and buildings surrounding it that it created, i think, a lot of places where this sort of Problem Or Risk could be accentuated. That sounds like the issue with the Golf Course there, too. Maybe instead of going to a public Golf Course like The One that he was at yesterday, maybe go to Golf Courses on Military Bases or i hate to say it this way, the candidates deserve R R as well, but maybe they just dont get to play golf for a little while while we make sure that the protection that can be provided is up to snuff. Keep in mind the next week we have the delegations of international leaders coming to the united states as well and the Secret Service is going to be expected to provide that level of protection as well, too. So there is a finite number of resources there, the Secret Service is being stretched in many different directions at once. I think its important for us in congress and the administration to make sure that were providing all of the resources that they need as fast as possible so they can get these tasks done and live up to the demands of their mission.
