People who he is, he pretty clearly and look, his running mate is doing this, too. You know, this is my diplomatic way of saying it. They're misogynistic pigs. Liz cheney, republican, with some brutal honesty about donald trump and yd vance as she announces she's not the only cheney endorsing kamala harris. Also tonight, donald trump finally admits he lost the last election. Like maybe we'll all forget about the heavy cost this country has paid for his election denying lie. Plus, republicans like trump and vance again deny that the problem is the guns. After the deadly school shooting in georgia. And even after trump himself was shot at by a gunman armed with an ar15. And we begin tonight with 60 days to go until the election. Just four days until the first presidential debate between donald trump and vice president kamala harris. And while the vp is currently in pittsburgh prepping for that showdown on tuesday, you know, a normal campaign thing to do, the other candidate hasn't held any formal campaign events this week. Instead, he's been delivering what can best be described as rambling and incoherent rants proving yet again there is something deeply, deeply wrong with him. We saw this on full display at this morning's event billed as a news conference though it didn't include a single question from the press. Instead, trump screamed into the ether for nearly an hour, complaining about how unfairly he's been treated. He disparaged his legal team who were lined up right behind him. He denied and mocked some of the sexual assault allegations against him. And in between, he just mumbled a bunch of nonsense. Here's a taste. This is being worked with the doj, department of justice, as are all of these cases. They all come out. Atlanta, fani, that is all department of justice. Nobody knew that. We were called, i was in the white house, and i said no, it never happened. I didn't even know what they were talking about. This was, i think i was in the oval office, sir, you know anything about this? and this had to do with the book. She had a few pages in a book. The late great bobby knight basketball coach, he would scream at those refs and everything, said, they would say bobby, you're not going to get the decision overturned, yeah, but the next one i will. And he was right. He was a great basketball coach. It's a hoax, it's a scam, it's a political witch hunt. And some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. Thank you very much, everybody. Did you see the looks on his lawyers' faces as they were looking at him like watching their whole dreams go away and realizing they had thrown their lives away. That guy wants to be in control of the nuclear codes, but somehow, despite all his ranting and raving about judges and how unfair the system is, donald trump has rarely ever paid a price for anything in his whole life, something we got more proof of today. When judge juan merchan pushed his sensing for the 34 felony charges he was found guilty of until after the election. Writing, quote, this matter is one that stands alone in a unique place in this nation's history. And that this delay should dispel any suggestion that the court will have issued any decision or imposed sentence either to give an advantage to or create a disadvantage for any political party. Once again, donald trump dodges accountability. A privilege that you or i or anyone else in the country would never, ever be afforded. This is a man who just keeps getting passes. Not just in the legal system, from the media too. I think it's time we seriously talk about it. Trump is a man who incited an insurrection, who was impeached twice for abuse of office, and indicted four times. That is not an insult. Those are the facts. Add to that, he is visually, clearly impaired, mendacious, and vengeful. He has no agenda but retribution. Those who would set the agenda in his second term are the idealogical extremists who cooked up project 2025. There's a stack of resumes from maga sycophants waiting in the wings. It's stephen miller who wants to throw migrants into internment camps. It's roger severino who wants to ban abortion nationwide. It's jd vance who wants to turn post menopausal women into a national fleet of nannies but think the precious kids getting gunned down at school is just a fact of life. And that is why we in the media, we have to do better. Journalists have a front row seat to history. And we influence how america understands just what is at stake. We have got to dispense with this obsession with the horse race instead of the issues. We have to stop covering for trump by reframing his incoherent loopy, misogynistic rants as anything but what they are. Evident of his fundamental unfitness to ever have been this country's president in the first place, and ever to be again. This process of rehabilitation that journalist aaron rupar calls sane washing is happening nearly every time trump opens his mouth. Just take a look at how fox tried to clean up an answer that the woman who asked trump a simple clear question at the economics club of new york described as incomprehensible and outrageously offensive to the millions of families drowning in costs. If you win in november, can you commit to prioritizing legislation to make child care affordable. We're going to be taking in trillions of dollars, and as much as child care is talked about as being expensive, it's relatively speaking not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers we'll be taking in. We're going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people, and then we'll worry about the rest of the world. He gave an impassioned defense of free market policies. I was impressed. For crap's sake. Guys, there is no cavalry coming to save us, period. There is no knight in shining armor. The generals like jim mattis and mark milley will not fight this battle. It is just you and your ballot. We have 60 days to insure our democracy remains intact and out of the hands of that mad man. Because it is beyond clear that this man is impaired. This is the oldest person who has ever run for president. He cannot finish a sentence without rambling. He calls it the weave. Right. But we're taking it seriously. He's going to debate the vice president of the united states on thursday. When you're talking about this normally bias we see in the mainstream media where they feel they have to treat both candidates as the same functionally because otherwise they'll see partisan. And that's how we got here. They don't want to seem partisan, they don't want to make it seem like they're lefties, and so they're treating these two candidates as the same. But you and i both know, that answer and the other answers, trump's other answers from that were as incomprehensible as the first one. I do think, look, autocratic stuff where he's saying he has all these autocratic plans, you know, the convention where the people had the signs that said, mass deportation now, like, none of that is normal. And i think it's really important, it's not partisan to tell the truth. Right? it's not partisan to say, we have never had a president who is auditioning for autoocracy, who says the constitution just go down the list. The fact dick cheney is endorsing him is a good sign that none of this is normal. This is liz cheney talking about dick cheney doing what molly just said. You know, if you think about the moment that we're in and you think about how serious this moment is, you know, my dad believes, and he said publicly that there's never been an individual in our country who is as grave a threat to our democracy as donald trump is. Tim, let me read you what dick cheney said. He said in our nation's 248year history there's never been an individual who is greater threat to our republic than donald trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again. As citizens we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our constitution. That's why i'll be casting my vote for kamala harris. Dick cheney is a far right conservative, as is his daughter. If he's saying that, you know donald trump, you have covered him a long time. Is he not impaired? is he not a threat? is dick cheney not, i can't believe i'm saying this, not correct? yes, he's impaired, not fit. I think we have watched this unfold on a public stage now for nearly a decade. I think the only difference with trump now is that his hearing has gone, his speech is going, he's become even more nonlineal than he used to be. But these efforts to sort of impute policy or impute strategy or impute coherence, or rationality on just to daily massive doses of word salad and nonsense is because i think the public dialogue won't just go to the place it needs to go, which is to say he's absolutely unfit. And if you put up socalled policy proposals next to one another, where kamala harris, for example, is talking about housing and tax subsidies for builders, low interest loans for buyers to deliver homes to the needy or to anybody who actually wants to home in a squeezed market, and trump's policy is mass deportation of immigrants. That's not a policy. And none of that is designed to deliver housing to the american people. It's just trump latching on an old hateful meme essentially onto any topic he wants to pretend there's a policy. I don't think the media should treat them as equivalent because they're not. In the economic club speech, he gave yesterday, the clip you gave on day care, you know, the thing underlying his rationale for how he'll pay everything is massive tariffs on china which would get picked up by consumers, not by companies and not by the chinese, if they were ever enacted. It will never generate enough money to pay for every single program trump has ticked off, including child care. And he and his team haven't thought through any of this stuff rationally. And he's not a messenger for rationality. He's a performance artist and he's dangerous. Yeah. And the bottom line is he wouldn't be running the country. It would be the people behind project 2025. It would be them, and yet what we get from our friends in the media is a vague vacus tv interview didn't help kamala harris? only four of the questions in this interview that they're claiming oh, this was vague and vacuous. Conservative moms charmed by trump who would rather avoid his misogyny. The new york times called them squadrons of helicopter moms buzzed off white wine. This is moms for liberty, the people who are attempting to ban, you know, normal school books from because they have a gay character in them or a black person in them. And they're being it's all being washed into this on the one hand, on the other hand. Yeah x i love what my colleagues have said. But where my mind goes is that as incomprehensible and as incoherent has trump has been over the last week, more so than we have ever seen him, there are still a lot of people in the room who are going to support him because he'll reduce their taxes. The reality is a lot of the very wealthy in this country that are supporting donald trump will do so at all cost for that exact reason. And they will on the other hand fund all of the propaganda that props him up and diminishes kamala harris. And so what is concerning to me, therefore, is that while we're seeing the enthusiasm and the interest around kamala harris and where believe that her support is becoming deeper within her base, so more turnout, the cheney endorsements help because what they can do is help defend kamala harris when a republican tries to go after her. That's not to say they're going to be out there on the trail with her, but what it does do is give a permission structure for some republicans who may have stayed home say i can go out and vote for her, but the ongoing concern is that as, again, as ridiculous as donald trump sounds on a daytoday basis, there are people who are still going to fund everything that he's that they want to promote through him. He's just a vehicle. Yeah, and i have said over and over again, i'll say it again, my team has heard it 147 times. I apologize, the reallythening you need to think about in this election is december 31st, 2025, when that tax cut expires. Because there are people who they don't care if this country burns to the ground. They will do whatever for the tax cut. Not everybody. I'm going to put a list on the screen. 88 corporate leaders because not all the rich folks are on the wrong side. The founder and ceo of ceo box, the ceo of yelp, the chairman of snap, the former ceo of 21st century fox, who is a murdoch, rupert murdoch's son james, the owner of the nba's washington wizards, the mystics, and the nhl capitals, jeffrey katzenberg, former chairman of walt disney studios, facebook cofounder, magic johnson, of course. There are some rich folks, you deal with rich folks. You know you cover bloomberg. You know, in kamala harris' new fundraising numbers for the month of august, i think she hit $315 million or something like that. Over $600 million since she got anointed. 20% of what she raised in august were from republicans and independents. According to the campaign. And i think it does show that money may always be a priority for all of us, but there are a lot of people now who are recognizing what a threat donald trump is, and they will vote against their own economic interest to prevent him. Go ahead. Donald trump is very bad for the markets. I mean, in the end, it's not even he's very bad for the economy, and what he wants is a kind of crony capitalism we see in hungary and russia. That is not you have a lot of poverty in those countries, and you have a lot of inequality and very few people sort of you know, it's a kleptocracy. That's what he's advertising and we have seen that with his family. There's one thing to want a tax cut, but really what you're doing when you're voting for trump, you're giving it over to this nondemocratic absolutely. By the way, we have these we have mini versions of this in this country. Louisiana, mississippi, alabama, trump will make the whole country that. That's where, you know, kamala harris has to talk about that. She has to hit that point many times in the debate and throughout the campaign to say that everything you're hearing from donald trump, just take the worst of that, nationalize it, that's what you're going to get when he becomes predof the united states. That's whether you're rich, poor, black, white, they don't care. We're going to hide them for a minute, and then we're going to bring them back. I was told if i got 63 million, which is what i got the first time, you would win. You can't not win. And i got millions more votes than that, and we lost by a whisker. Did you now? it only took nearly four years, but donald trump has finally admitted what we all know to be true. That he lost the 2020 election to joe biden. And while it's great that he's finally facing reality, it doesn't change the destruction his big lie has caused this country. The countless number of people who fell prey to it as well as one of our two major political parties, the republican party has now been contorted into one that no longer believes in elections, and i'm not just talking about in the past tense but about future elections as well. They are actively working to put the people and processes in place to not only convince voters that there are no free and fair elections, but they also want to be able to overturn the next one. I also have to wonder what the january 6th insurrectionists, the nearly 1500 people who have been arrested so far with more than a third already sentenced to prison think of trump's casual admissions because they genuinely believed the big lie because of what trump told them. Many admitted to that in court. As a result of the actions by trump's maga mob, approximately 140 police officers were assaulted on january 6th. Many were injured and some lost their lives in connection with the attack. That alone makes today's endorsement of trump by the fraternal order of police, the nation's largest police union, all the more perplexing. Despite the friendly atmosphere at the event, trump has shown that he, a 34time convicted criminal, is not the candidate of law and order. And in fact, not a true friend of the police. So it is remarkable that now, trump feels free to say i lost. Given what the big lie has done to his party, his base, and to this country. And joining me now is sheriff chris swanson of genesee county, michigan. He spoke at the democratic national convention last month, and sheriff, thank you for being here. I listened to your speech at the dnc. It was heartfelt, it was moving. You talked about what happened on january 6th. I wonder how you feel hearing trump casually admit that the thing that got 140 police officers beaten up and maimed and six people killed, including officers, including officer sicknick, a hero laid in state at the capitol, how do you feel hearing him say, oh, yeah, i lost? let me add another layer of pain. It has cost people's friendships, it has split families. It has divided churches, it has broken up business relationships. Four years too late, i agree with you. It's stunning to me, and when i heard it, i had to rewind it a couple times because it was so casual. And so many people have made this into almost a religion. And as you said, it's broken up relationships but it's also contorted the relationships of police with one another. Mike fanone has gotten death threats from other cops because he fought for his life and almost got killed on january 6th. Police officers have turned on each other. How in the world can the fraternal order of police endorse trump? i don't understand it. Do you? well, i can tell you that they did in 2016. They endorsed him in 2020. Again in 2024, but the fop does not speak for every police officer in america. I'm here as elected sheriff because i know what law enforcement stands for. Protect, serve, and unify. And i, too, have been troubled as to why people would look at what happened on january 6th, that should be america's deal breaker, that image. You just showed it before i came on. Those police officers would stand as the surface tension between order and chaos. They were attacked that day. And nobody stepped up. And it could have been stopped. In flint, michigan, we were able to show how you handle aggression and righteous anger. He fed it. And now admitting that that whole incident was one that he retracts four years later, i, too, was stunned. This is what the national fraternal order of police said in their endorsement. During his first term, president trump made it clear he supported law enforcement and border enforcement. He stood with us when very few would. We defeated the defund the police movement, and we must reelect donald trump. Here's the problem, violent crime dropped in 2021 and 2022 under joe biden. They decline significantly again in 2023 under joe biden. What donald trump is promising to do is the following. Let me play what he's promised about, well, what he's promised to do. He's promised to have a death penalty for anyone who killed a police officer, so that's one of the promises he made. But he's also promised to quote/unquote unleash the police and stop the investigations, federal investigations into the police, most of the cops i know can't stand, which is the police who use violence against unarmed civilians unlawfully. He's saying he'll protect them. What do you think about that? first of all, i gotta go right at the statement of unleash the police. That is not who we are. That was characterized in birmingham, alabama. We don't ever want to go back to that era in history. That's is not who police are. The police are to be trust. We're not a perfect profession. The argument of defund the police, that was something in 2020 that has been tagged with democrats, and i understand why. It is something that actually goes against big cities like flint, where we need police, but we need good police. We need police that understand what it is to have a good mind set and how to handle things and deescalate and not do choke holds unless there's a deadly force situation. Don't do noknock warrants. Sometimes in law enforcement, we see adaptations and evolution as a negative. It can be seen that way. Our change in how we handle things, that's why in flint, michigan, genesee county with a democratic sheriff, a democratic leadership, a democratic mayor, we have dropped crime by 17%, dropped the murder rate by 40%. This sheriff and this office has received over $5 million from the biden/harris administration to fight human trafficking, to help fund ignite, our education program in the jail that is now a model throughout the nation, to help with body scanners, tasers, weapon. You can't tell me this administration defunds the police. There may be some that say that, maybe they had a negative interaction, but every police leader needs to show that people actually love the police. It's our job to give a reason why every single day. Every traffic stop, every call, and every leader that steps up. Thank you so much, sheriff chris swanson, and by the way, this was never something that democrats ran on. This is something that donald trump says because some activist said it and that's not a thing democrats ran on. But as you said, i know a fair number of police, and they all say what you say. That we're trying to be on the side of the community and the bad cops, nobody hates them more than the good cops. They cannot stand the bad cops and they don't want trump standing with them. No, no. It's having local maga officials refuse to certify the election results. While bullying and threatening local election officials. The former president and his henchmen continue to foster a menacing atmosphere of hostility, particularly directed at election officials. The brennan center's 2024 annual survey of local election officials found that 38% of them have experienced threats, harassment, or abuse, while 7 in 10 local election officials feel that threats have increased since 2020. And more than a third know a colleague who has resigned at least partly due to safety concerns. This comes as rolling stone and american doom previously identified nearly 70 election deniers in swing states who are now working as local election officials themselves. Joining me now is ari berman, national voting rights correspondent for mother jones and author of the new book, minority rule, the right wing attack on the will of the people and the fight to resist it. It has been too long, ari, my friend. So good to see you, even under these circumstances. Let's talk about it, though. I feel like there are two buckets of things that the maga folks are doing. On the one hand, bully election officials and try to terrify them. A lot have quit because of it. On the other hand, we're just not going to certify the election. If they don't certify, let's say in georgia, what happens? thank you so much for having me on and great to see you again from afar. So it's really all part of the same voter suppression strategy, because they are trying to make it more difficult to vote. They are pushing out the people who run elections and putting election deniers in place. Then once those election deniers are in place, they're trying to change the laws in places like georgia so they don't have to certify the election. They're being very clear about what they're doing. They're telegraphing what they're doing. That basically they're creating pretext to try not to certify an election. I think if they do this, they're going to be forced to certify it. Either republican officials, secretaries of states, governors are going to force them to do it or the courts are going to force them to do it, like in 2020. The problem is in the period when the elections are not certified there could be a tremendous amount of weaponization of disinformation, misinformation, chaos, and the same kind of conditions that led to an insurrection in the capitol on january 6th. You said courts are going to force them to certify. Are they, though? i don't trust john roberts as far as i can throw him across the room. I feel like if this election winds up in his hands, he'll simply make trump president and come up with a pretext. What do you think? you would hope the courts would, because they counted the votes and made sure the votes were counted in 2020, but i do share your concerns. And again, it's also how close is the margin? trump was trying to throw out 45,000 votes in three states in 2020. In fact, he was trying to through out many more, but that's the number he needed. What if it's a much closer race? what if it's one state and it's 1,000 votes? that's where i start to become very nervous. Particularly because it feels like they have tried to institutionalize the insurrection in ways that were not the case in 2020. So in 2020, there was not a trump aligned maga majority on the georgia board of elections. They had not changed the law to give counties a pretext to not certify elections. You did not have election boards in michigan, arizona, nevada, and other swing states who had not certified an election. They're taking the extreme steps in 2024 that trump wanted election officials to take in 2020 and they refused to take and upheld the law instead. Right, and the brennan center has shown the states that are cracking down on voter registration drives, making it more difficult for people to do nonpartisan voter registration drives. Project 2025, if it got implemented, would make it even harder to be an election official, make it harder to do elections. You have seen these states, red states, crack down on things like drop boxes, anyway, as you said, it can be easier to vote. We're really seeing the republican party go to war against voting in elections and now donald trump is admitting that the reason that they're doing it, the pretext for making it harder to vote was all bs. Because now he admits he did lose. What do you make, as somebody who follows this and has written books about it, that he now casually admits that the whole pretext of all of this voter suppression is bs? well, everyone knows that he knows that he lost because when all of these officials had said the elections were stolen, have to get under oath, they admitted they knew the election wasn't stolen and that they were just saying it to try to gin people up. And to try to achieve a political outcome. Just like they know there's no evidence of voter fraud because every time they investigated it, they can't find any, including trump's own election integrity quote/unquote commission that was formed in response to his lies about voting and then shut down without finding any voter fraud. So they keep never having any evidence to their claim, but the scary thing is they keep escalating their war on voting. The more it gets debunked, the more they escalate their tactics. So there has already been a war on voting for over a decade to make it harder to vote. Now they have added that election subversion piece on top of it. And that's what's so dangerous about this current moment. And the best way to fight back, those of you in the audience who are listening to this, this is not doom and gloom. This should be inspiration. The best weapon against voter suppression is more voting. Get in line, stay in line. Get your friends registered, register to vote, vote because they don't want you to. Gun violence has been present in my life for almost all my life. I lost many of my friends growing up to gun culture. There is a whole generation of school students growing up right now having to deal with the threat of somebody coming into their school room and killing their friends, themselves, their teachers. And if you consider the parkland shooting and how those young people became active immediately after that shooting occurred and started lobbying elected officials of congress to get rid of guns, that's the kind of culture of civic engagement we should be promoting but donald trump and jd vance are saying just get over it. Screw you and that mind set. We're drunk off of guns in this country, and i think it takes someone like kamala harris, hopefully kamala harris, to be able to say look, i have dealt with a lot of people in my career who have had a lot of issues with guns, and we have to figure out a way to get them out of our culture. Imagine being somebody like jd vance, who demands that women give birth to as many kids as possible, he always calls them kids, but then says, you know, if those kids get shot dead at school, sucks for them. And you see, i mean, heritage foundation project 2025, if you go to that website, everything is about regulating ivf. They are desperate to regulate ivf, but not guns. Look, the reality is there is actually most there's really no other country that lives like this. There is none. We have gun violence like yemen. But everywhere else, england, france, canada, mexico, you know, they don't have kids and the other thing is we're retraumatizing students. We have these kids who are you know, they are dealing with the possibility of getting shot in school, they are doing these drills, you know, all the time. These drills are super traumatic, and you know, when i grew up, we didn't have these drills because we didn't have as many guns. We had, remember, we had automatic we had a gun ban on certain kinds of guns. That joe biden pushed through the senate. And let me play the other thing that they show. And by the way, it's retraumatizing me as a mom because my kids starting in third grade had to have these drills and show us the park when we would pick up our kids if there was a school shooting in broward county, florida, and it was traumatizing to me as well to be like, my babies, if they don't show up, they're dead. This is a good development if parents were giving their kids a crack pipe or subjecting their kids to any outlandish danger and washing their hands of it we would say we are going to hold you accountable. This kind of accountability is way too late but i think if you've got guns at home, you're giving them to your child as a christmas present and you aren't locking the weapons up and you've got a child that has trouble with a pattern of being troubled at school than you are culpable. The idea that we meet out capital punishment on 14year old then we let the parents skate it's a part of the gop pattern willing to say this exists outside of the ether and it's part of the culture with thoughts and prayers.
