Days. Vice president Kamala Harris, of course, is now Donald Trumps opponent in the race. Were going to go through the strategies for that showdown. Also ahead, well have expert legal analysis on Hunter Bidens surprise guilty plea in his federal Tax Case. Well have the latest on that. Well also bring you the very latest developments out of georgia, as the father of the suspect is now facing charges. And the weapon used in the attack appears to have been a gift to his son. The shooter. Good morning. Welcome to Morning Joe. It is friday, september 6th. Along with joe, willie, and me, we have the host of way too early, white House Bureau Chief at polpolitico, jonathan lem. Special correspondent for bbc news, Katty Kay is with us. Pulitzer prize winning Columnist And Associate editor of the Washington Post, Eugene Robinson is here. And Msnbc Contributor and author of the book how the right lost its mind, Charlie Sykes is here. Well start this hour with pretty big theres a lot of stuff to talk about this morning, but, willie, mika said we must start with the nfl. I really didnt. What a start. Just dive right in. Kc by A Toe. What an incredible start to the season. Ravens chiefs, rematch of last years Afc Championship game. Yes, Taylor Swift in the stands. As you said, joe, it came down literally, not even A Toe, to half A Toe. A touchdown that looked like, on the last play of The Game. Baltimore is down seven with five seconds in The Game. Lamar jackson does an incredible pirouette, scrambles in the pocket. Throws to his Tight End early. Looks like a touchdown. Now, theyre down one and lined up for the twopoint conversion. Theyll go for a win. Dramatic victory on the first game of the season. But the refs say the tip of that toe is just Out Of Bounds on the replay. Wow, okay. Looks like theyre right. Oh, look how close that is. Ball game over. Chiefs win, 2720. What a beginning to the season. What an incredible start to the season. Were going to be talking a lot more about the nfl with Pablo Torre, Mike Lupica. Very excited about it. Why dont we start with politics . Oh, good. The harriswalz campaign, dnc, and joint fundraising groups raised 361 Million last month. Thats according to the campaign. The August Haul was the best Grassroots Fundraising Month in president ial history. The latest number nearly triples the amount raised by former President Trump in the same period. Harris has seen recordbreaking Fundraising Numbers ever since taking over for President Biden as the democratic nominee. Those numbers certainly will help as theres very little time in terms of trying to put an end to action. They can work on Down Ballot races and shore up the democrats. Well, i mean, theyve already given, Jonathan Lemire, 25 Million. Kamala harris gave 25 Million to Down Ballot races, im sure something that scared a lot of democrats. But shes bringing in so much money right now, they certainly are going to be able to focus on their own Ground Game. From everybody i talk to on the ground and in the Swing States, it is the Ground Game now where harris holds a big advantage. In close races, they feel confident. Yeah. The Harris Team inherited structural advantages from Joe Bidens Campaign, which already had built up a significant field operation, that Ground Game. She and her team only added to it. They have a significant advantage there over trump. Now, a massive fundraising advantage, too. 360 million. Thats more than three times what trump raised in august, which has allowed harris to give money away to Down Ballot races. We had a republican, a congressman on the record yesterday, saying if the Trajectory Holds, he fears the gop is going to lose the house. He blames also the leadership of the house republicans, Speaker Johnson included, and the lack of any Policy Progress made this year for that, as well. We should also note here, having this much money, having this much cash on hand really frees up the Vice President in these last two months. Shes not going to need to do a lot of fundraising. Shes not going to need to make those trips to the sort of rich donors and try to ask for more money. They can do It Grassroots. They can do it online. She can spend her time campaigning in those seven vital Battleground States where polls show a very tight race. Which is exactly what Kamala Harris is doing. Meanwhile, Donald Trump spoke yesterday to the economic club of New York. He was asked for specifics on how his administration would make Child Care more affordable. Specific legislation. Listen. If you win in november, can you commit to prioritizing legislation to make Child Care affordable . And if so, what specific piece of legislation will you advance . Well, i would do that. You know, we had Senator Marco Rubio and my daughter, ivanka, was so impactful on that issue. It is a very important issue. But i think when you talk about the kind of numbers im talking about, that because Child Care is Child Care. You know, its something you have to have it in this country. You have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers im talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that theyre not used to, but theyll get used to it very quickly. Its not going to stop us from Doing Business with us, but there will be a substantial tax when products come into our country. That is so much bigger than any numbers were talking about, including Child Care, that itll take Care Of it. I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time. Coupled with the reductions i told you about on Waste And Fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country. Because i have to say, with Child Care, i want to stay with Child Care, but those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that im talking about. Including growth. But growth also headed up by what the plan is that i just told you about. Were going to be taking in trillions of dollars, and as much as Child Care is talked about as being expensive, its relatively speaking, not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers well be taking in. Were going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take Care Of its people, and then well worry about the rest of the world. Lets help other people. But were going to take Care Of our country first. This is about america first. Its about Make America great again. We have to do it. Because right now, were a failing nation. Thank you. Very good question. Thank you. And thus ends the sixth Grade Book Report presentation. Little donny obviously did not read his. Mika, that took me back. I must admit, Freshman Year at college, i was supposed to read a book. You didnt . Went in and dr. Bryant asked me what the book was about. Something about the i dont know. Okay. But it didnt end well. Then he goes, what did you think . Well, not a good book. I would not recommend it. Wait a minute. He said, can you hold it up . He said, thats a penguin book. It devolves into joking, but, willie, what just happened . Is he okay . It sounded like a middle School Book Report where he didnt read the book. No idea what he is talking about. Hes rambling incoherently. By The Way, ive just got to say, too, because its a pet peeve, the man who promised to pay down the Debt And Balance the budget in 2016 raised it more than any president in the history of this republic. Now, hes going, oh, because of my high tariffs, because of my high taxes on Working Class Americans, my high taxes on middle class americans, were going to balance the budget quickly, and were going to make so much money, i dont even have to talk about Child Care. Yeah, thats the one where you go, you know what . I actually didnt read the book. May i present on monday . Can i have The Weekend . Even if you knock me down a grade, because this is going to be embarrassing. Well done. By The Way, one of the core arguments about Kamala Harris that you hear in certain Cable News channels and websites is shes always in the middle of a Word Salad. Do you ever watch Donald Trump you may want to give up on Donald Trump. Did you watch him yesterday . Ever watch his rallies . He brought it in for that landing. Tariffs is apparently the foundation for how hes going to pay for everything, including Child Care. Theyre a tax on consumers in this country, conservative economists tell you, too. They hate the idea. Hes talking about growing an economy. We have to have finally growth. Well, two days ago, Goldman Sachs said if Donald Trump becomes president , the economy will not grow. If Kamala Harris does, it will grow. Thats Goldman Sachs. Thats not me. Thats not us. D socialists at Goldman Sachs say the economy would be stronger under harris. Yeah, he has no idea what hes talking about when it comes to policy. You wonder at what point we saw conservatives, joe, and some republicans rolling their eyes and saying, what is he talking about here . If you push even a little bit on policy, you find out hes an inch deep. Yeah, he just doesnt know. Gene robinson, again, as willie said, trumpers will talk about Word Salad as it pertains to Kamala Harris. Let me tell you, there is no comparison. Donald trump not only in that answer, but at most rallies, hes about 3 feet deep in Lettuce And Ranch dressing. He is in the middle of a Word Salad he cant get out of. And to a more important point, he has never understood well, hes never understood american history. Hes never understood the constitution. Hes never understood our founding documents. Hes never understood policy. Hes never apologized for not understanding policy. Thats one of the reasons why when people say, i support Donald Trump, i say, why, well, i dont like him as a Human Being, but i like his policies. Really . There were few policies. It was 99 gesture and 1 policy. Absolutely. Joe, War And Peace by tolstoy is about war and about peace. There you go. Peace is better than war. But war is more exciting. You know, absolutely absurd. I mean, you listen to that, and he clearly has no idea what hes talking about. And this idea about tariffs that he has, which is wrong. 100 or as Donald Trump would say, 110 of economists will tell you that hes totally wrong about tariffs. Its not a tax on foreign companies. It is a tax on american consumers. It is a regressive tax, a horrible tax that affects Lowincome And Workingclass americans more than it does more affluent americans. This was at the economic club of New York. I mean, how did those people who were listening to him not just, like, Gag Or Laugh . How do they keep a straight face listening to that ridiculous nonsense . I have no idea. Yeah, i was wondering the same thing when that woman when he kept looking back at the woman who asked the question. I just wanted to zoom in on her face and see what she was actually thinking. If i was the mother of young children, i wouldnt be reassured by those Child Care policies. Maybe Jd Vances policy, frankly, of having aunts, uncles, and grandparents, as if they didnt have other things to do, looking after your children, that seems to be the closest there is to a Child Care policy. Charlie sykes, one of the reasons, you know, you keep hearing from businesspeople who say, well, i dont like Donald Trump, dont like his character, but, you know, there are the policy issues. Clearly, on the Child Care front, there arent many policy issues. Im sure many of them dont like the idea of tariffs. They know this is a tax on the american consumer. Does it really just come down to the idea that Donald Trump has proposed to cut corporate Tax Rates to 15 . And people in the Business Community and on Wall Street are prepared to hold their noses at everything else because of that 15 corporate Tax Rate . Well, i think its that. I think its also Donald Trumps position on regulation. Look, i mean, Donald Trump is essentially told the business class, you know, if i become president , im going to do whatever you want me to do. I will give you whatever subsidies you want. I will eliminate regulations that you find to be petty. I will not raise the taxes. You know, i mean, basically, this is very, very transactional from their point of view. This is kind of the question of, of course, whether or not at some point theyre sitting in the room, applauding that bizarre Word Salad, whether it occurs to them that, you know, this man is not good for the nation. This man is not good for economic stability. What we most about is a stable economy we can predict. We do not want an international trade war. But for many of them, its simply, yeah, this guy is going to do what i want. By The Way, Elon Musk is out there basically saying, yeah, you know, Donald Trump is going to put me in charge of all kinds of things involving, you know, Government And Government regulation. What could possibly go wrong there . If you think the incoherence of the Word Salad is troubling, wait until you see the kind of people that Donald Trump brings into a second administration. I mean, thats going to be quite something. Well have much more on the race Coming Up in a bit, including that debate now just four days ago. We want to turn to some new developments surrounding wednesdays deadly shooting at a High School in georgia. Authorities have now arrested the father of the 14yearold suspect. Colin gray was taken into custody yesterday. He faces charges of second Degree Murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children. Police did not offer many details, other than to say grays charges are, quote, directly connected with the actions of his sOn And allowing him to possess a weapon. Two Law Enforcement sources tell Nbc News Gray bought his son an Ar15 Rifle as a Christmas Gift last year. They dont know exactly when it was given to him, but around the holidays. Sources Say It was after police interviewed the teen last year about those online threats. The teen had denied making those threats, and no arrest was made. Grays son is accused of shooting and killing four people at apalachee High School wednesday. He faces four counts of Felony Murder and is set to appear in court later this morning. Two senior Law Enforcement officials say they have discovered evidence of the Suspects Interest in mass shootings, particularly in the 2018 attack on the High School in parkland, florida. Mika, we sat here yesterday and wondered how a 14yearold can get his hands on the gun. The father had said previously when the fbi visited the family about these online threats, he has Hunting Weapons in his home but they are locked up. His son did not have access to them. My gosh, joe and mika, after the threats were made, allegedly, he bought his son, 13 or 14 years old at christmastime, an Ar15 Style Rifle for christmas last year. I it is beyond shocking. Katty kay, were starting to see this, obviously. In this case, this seems to be what i say were starting to see is the arresting of parents. Yeah. And its about time. You have a 14yearold Child who is obviously has great mental challenges. The cops are calling him evil. His aunt or other relatives say this is a boy who was basically let down by his parents from the very beginning. And, somehow, the father buys this boy an Arstyle Weapon, after he tells police hes going to keep guns out of his possession because the threats they have already been warned of. I mean, its very clear. I mean, very clear. He should go to jail. Yeah, the timetable of this and the fact we know the police visited the home, spoke to the father, spoke to the boy, and then the father gave the Son Access to this ar15, and access presumably to other weapons in the house, even though he said he didnt have access to them, gives a very clear ticktock. Maybe this is the Direction America is going to go to try to cut down on the number of children that we that society seems to be happy with having killed in schools. Because, wow, theres a certain amount of fatalism about trying to do anything else at the moment. You hear it again and again from members of congress and members of the republican party and members of the Lobby Groups that want to keep firearms in the hands of people. Well, we cant do anything. I mean, for a country that is so committed to trying to break barriers and introduce new technologies and do the impossible, when it comes to this particular issue, there is a, well, we wish we could, but thats life. Thats the latest line. Its just a fact of life. So maybe this is the only way the courts are going to manage to get around an extraordinary political apathy when it comes to gun shootings. Well, it is a fear. It is fear from republicans. If anybody believes that Gun Safety laws or Gun Control has always just been practiced or bought by the right, you know, in the 60s, it was fought by The Left. These things shift Back And Forth. Republicans need to shift back towards a sane, a rational gun policy position. If they did, Charlie Sykes, they wouldnt lose a lot of republican voters. An overwhelming majority of republicans support universal Background Checks. An overwhelming number of republicans support Red Flag Laws. An overwhelming number of republicans support raising the age to 21 for people that are going in, buying Ar15 Style weapons. An overwhelming majority of americans, im sure, would support enhanced Background Checks. More complete Background Checks. For people, lets say, under the age of 30 that are going out to buy ar15s. We look, and there is a line, a line that goes straight through so many of these shootings. One after another after another. A disturbed young man, usually a disturbed young white man, buys an ar15, and he goes and shoots up schools or Movie Baptist churches in texas. Go down the list. Sometimes it is older disturbed people who slaughter those attending a country festival, Music Festival in vegas. Again, enough is enough. I go to you because i know you grew up around hunters in wisconsin. I grew up around hunters in mississippi, alabama, georgia, northwest florida. They want this Gun Safety law, and theyre conserative republicans. This is american carnage. You know, Donald Trump is running on Make America safe again. Well, if youre an american parent, you know, this is your great fear. This is the great american nightmare. Joe, The Point were making is incredibly important. Because i think there is a real disconnect between what republican politicians think they have to do because theyre afraid of the nra and what actual Gun Owners feel about all of this. Because you are absolutely right. You know, Gun Safety is not a leftwing idea. It is not a partisan issue. People want, especially hunters, understand how central it is to treat guns in a safe and responsible manner. You know, what this is going to take at some point is for republicans to stand up, turn around, to the Gun Lobby and say, you know what . Im in favor of Second Amendment rights, but were not going this way. They are, in fact, going to go through some of the policies you just mentioned. Were not going to turn a blind eye to this. Were not going to regard the shooting of children at school as a fact of life, as Jd Vance said yesterday. But i have to say, one of the incidents that really kind of broke me on all of this was the massacre of the children at sandy hook. After that, if that was not enough to sober up the country, if that was not enough to turn things around, what will it take . And i think that this is sort of this hanging nightmare. How long are we going to put up with this . Whats going to happen . In this particular case, giving this deeply disturbed child an ar15 a christmas present, im sorry, you know, i had an image in my mind of the republican Congressman Posing in front of the Christmas Tree with the whole family, and theyre all Holding Weapons of, you know, guns and semiautomatic weapons. Of war. Weapons of war. You know, this fetishizing of the gun. At some point, that needs to stop. We have to have a stigma, the celebration of this. Remember the congressmen wearing the ar15 pins on the floor of congress . What sick shit is that when children are being murdered in their classrooms . It is sick. Jonathan lemire normalizing and celebrating something that is sick. Well, its a total lie. It is a total lie to say that Republicans Cant do the reasonable, rational things the majority of americans want them to do without being punished. This is not voters punishing them. The overwhelming majority of voters support all the things i talked to. Even a military style ban. You know, majority of americans support that. I think you can probably find something in between what we have now and that, as far as a much tougher process to be able to make sure that the right people get their hands on those guns. If there are a right people to get their hands on military style weapons, i dont think really, if you talk to Police Officers and talk to most vets, theyll tell you no. They dont want the same type of weapons of war similar to the ones they used in afghanistan and iraq on the streets of america or in schools. Now, to make two points that i just put out there, one that republicans can actually vote for rational Gun Safety laws that will protect our children when they go to school. Two, these guns are weapons of war. I was just looking up, brian mast, the congressman in south florida, very republican district, a very conservative district. After parkland, he did what republicans in connecticut did after sandy hook. He voted for reasonable, rational Gun Safety legislation. He even voted to ban assault style, military style weapons. This is what he says here. He says, the most important Time Of My Life is the 12 years i spent in the army. I was a bomb technician. Lost both my legs and a finger when a bomb detonated beneath me. Then he went on to say, about others on the battlefield, now as a republican congressman from florida, i dont fear becoming a political casualty. If we act by changing laws surrounding firearms and mental illness, we can save lives, too. Congressman goes on to say, most nights in afghanistan, i wielded a. 40 caliber pistol. Barrel length was 14 inches. He goes on, i usually carry ten magazines with 20 rounds. He goes On And on. He goes, my rifle was very similar to the arstyle, semiautomatic weapon used to kill students, teachers, and coaches i knew at Marjory Stoneman douglas High School in parkland. He goes On And talks about how these are militarystyle weapons. And they have no place in america. No place in the hands of kids. And that, that, jonathan, in 2018, was a conservative republican congressman who said that before an election, who said that before a primary, and has been reelected through his primary three times, reelected to congress three more times since then, in one of the more conservative districts around. So, yes, republicans, they need to stop saying theyre worried about their voters. Its not their voters. Its not the constitution. Theyre just worried about the nra and other Gun Groups that give them a lot of money. Yeah. There is an example there of a republican taking a courageous stance and not paying the consequences from voters. We saw a few do the same in texas after the uvalde shooting. But this is rare. There is no widespread movement here to ban these weapons of war, these Ar15 Style Rifles. Even when, even when it was one of those weapons that shot Donald Trump just six weeks or so back. Even then, no outcry from republicans about changing it. In fact, we hear from Jd Vance yesterday, saying that its just a fact of life. A sad fact of life that these School Shootings keep happening. Eugene robinson, the Washington Post yesterday got their hands on some Text Messages that were sent from a mother to her daughters who were in that school. I could say, thankfully, those daughters got out. The girls got out safely. But it is heartbreaking. Her words saying, you know, please stay safe. I love you. They prayed together over text. The our father together. It is impossible to read without tearing up. Yet, the governor of that state, Brian Kemp, is saying, well, now is not the time to talk about solutions. Exactly. Now is not the time to talk about policy, even though this tragedy happened in his backyard. It was almost far worse. You write that now actually is exactly the time to deal with it. It absolutely is. That is the cowardly copout that republicans take when something like this happens. It happens so regularly. You know, in what universe is that acceptable . But when there is a School Shooting, they immediately say, as Brian Kemp did, said wednesday night, well, today is not the day for politics or policy. But this is precisely the time, the day, the minute to talk about politics and policy because its all about that. I mean, you cant i dont think were going to be able to legislate away bad parenting. So if what we know about the situation is true, this father was a terrible father who failed his son. His son who is a child, by The Way, 14 years old. He was failed. But were not going to get rid of that. But we can mitigate, we can lessen the possibility that that sort of situation ends in this kind of tragedy. Georgia does not have a Safe Storage law. So those officers who interviewed the family last year were not able to require that those guns be properly stored under lock and key. Georgia does not have a Red Flag law. Those officers, again, could not go to a court and say, you know, can we have a Court Order to temporarily confiscate these weapons . This is a potentially dangerous situation. Those are, i think, Baby Steps that could be taken. Yeah. Thatd make us safer, that would make our children safer. Right. And, yet, we refuse even to talk about them. Well, Brian Kemp saying now is not the time to talk about Safe Storage Laws . Now is the time to talk about Safe Storage Laws. Theres no reason why there shouldnt be Safe Storage Laws. When . That that protects Gun Owners in their own home. That protects their children. Again, i know, charlie, you probably had the same experience i had. Nobody that i knew growing up left their guns around. No. They were all locked up. You walk into the house, they had shotguns, whatever guns they had. They were always locked up. This whole idea that now is not the time to talk about Safe Storage, and now is not the time to talk about Red Flag Laws is ridiculous. You know, usually, youll hear people go, well, theres no Gun Legislation that would have helped this, that, or the other. Yeah, there is. There always is. Jonathan lemire mentioned Vice President ial candidate Jd Vances take on this matter. Take a listen. With very strict Gun Laws. Some states dont have strict Gun Laws at all. The states with strict Gun Laws, they have a lot of shootings. The states without, some have shootings, too. Clearly, strict Gun Laws is not the thing that will solve this problem. What is going to solve this problem, and i really do believe this, is, look, i dont like this, dont like to admit this, i dont like it is a fact of life, but if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. We have got to bolster security at our schools so that a person who walks through the front door [ applause ] weve got to bolster security so if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children, theyre not able to. Guys, there were School Resource officers in the georgia High School at apalachee High School. They confronted the shooter, possibly preventing worse carnage. There were some of those precautions taken at this High School that Senator Vance is talking about. The truth of the matter is hes right. At this moment, this is a fact of life. In fairness, his full comment was, i dont like that this is a fact of life. He said, we dont have to life the reality we live in, but it is the reality we live in. You would think thatd prompt him then to say, lets sit down and change this reality. Lets sit down and do something about it. Because, clearly, having the School Resource officers there, who acted heroically the other day and probably prevented more kids and teachers from dying, it wasnt enough to save the four people who did die. That comment he made right there is another very, very stark example of the difference between these two campaigns. HarrisWalz Versus Trumpvance. They see it, trumpvance, as a fact of life. Kamala harris immediately said after the shooting, this is a choice were making. We have to make a different choice. People dont want this to be a fact of life. Mothers dont want to fear. Nobody wants to choose this. Fathers dont want to fear sending their children to to school, wondering whether theyll see them when they come home. Children dont want to go to school terrified by it. Charlie sykes, it doesnt have to be a fact of life. As Donald Trump said, i believe it was in iowa, we have to just get over it. Move on. Nope. Well, its a fact of life because republican legislators, mainly republican legislators in washington, d. C. And in State Legislatures across America Wont Support Common Sense, basic Gun Safety legislation that the ofoverwhelming majority of americans support. That is why this is a fact of life, brought to you by the republican party. It just is. The guns are in the hands repeatedly of these children, of these mentally deranged people. Why . Because any type of Gun Safety legislation, and in georgia, were talking about locking your guns up in your homes. Right. Safe storage. Red flag laws. The things that would have helped here, republicans say no, no, no. Well, to Jd Vances point about schools being soft targets, look, our children are always soft targets. Children everywhere are soft targets. America is a soft target. So, you know, his solution that we need to sort of just see it as a fact of life, you know, obviously, is in denial. But to your point about the legislation, if brian Kemp Tomorrow held a Press Conference and said, you know, i am so shocked and horrified by the murder of these children that, in fact, i am going to support Safe Storage legislation. I am going to support Red Flag Laws. I am going to support these common Sense Gun this Gun Legislation. Do you know what, joe . They would pass. Theyd pass in georgia, and he would not lose any political support. Because at some point, you have to realize, and this is The Point you made earlier and i Cant Stress this enough, Gun Owners, you know, are concerned about the Second Amendment, but they do not oppose Common Sense legislation. They would there would not be a huge blowback. This is one of those gut checks. If Brian Kemp stood up tomorrow and said, lets fix this, you know what . Hed not pay a significant political price for it. The question is why not . Why . Charlie sykes, thank you very much for coming on this morning. Ahead on Morning Joe, in a surprise move, Hunter Biden pleads guilty to federal Tax Charges in what was meant to be the first day of his trial. Well go over that new development and what it could mean for the president s son. Plus, the judge overseeing Donald Trumps Election Interference Case sets new deadlines, saying the 2024 Campaign Isnt relevant. Well have the very latest in the former president s legal troubles. Youre watching Morning Joe. Were back in 90 seconds. You didnt start a business just to keep the lights on. Lucky for you, Shopify built the just onetapping, ridiculously fastacting, skyhigh sales stacking champion of checkouts. Businesses that want to win, win with Shopify. 39 past the hour. Live look at new York City. What a beautiful morning. Its time now for a look at some of the other stories making headlines this morning. The chinese government is no longer allowing most foreign adoptions. According to the associated press, u. S. Families adopted over 80,000 children from china. The most from any foreign country. Beijings announcement comes amid falling birthrates across china. The ban raises complicated questions for hundreds of families in the u. S. Who are in the process of adopting. You know, because we talked about it before but lets underline it right here, there is a massive demographic crisis going on in china. 1979, they began their one child policy. Trying to bring down the population. It has gone too far, and now, again, theyre dealing with a demographic Time Bomb thats starting to go off. Yeah. Now to this big drop in the number of teenagers who use e ecigarettes. Vaping among middle and High School students is at the lowest level in a decade according to data from the cdc and fda. The drop comes as the government continues to crack down on retailers and suppliers who target teens. And a winning ticket could earn someone around 740 Million in tonights megA Millions lottery. Its one of the biggest jackpots in The Games history. The prize has been growing since early june with no big winner after dozens of drawings. The Lump Sum Payment after taxes is estimated at around 366 million. Which is how much . If im not mistaken, i think thats how much barnicle makes. Thats the salary for one week. Like an nfl quarterback. I dont get the lottery. You dont think you should do the lottery . Gambling, my daughter made me try. Howd you do . Broke even. Better than most. I dont get it. You never know. You never know. You could risk Money And Break even. I dont like it. I dont think its right. Ill tell ya, all the Gambling Commercials, man, it is extraordinary. All the Gambling Commercials youre putting in front of young guys and young women. Yeah. Its so dangerous. But thats not what this Side Rant is going to be about, willie. Oh. You know, you look at the number of you know, vaping is down over the last, you know, several years among middle schoolers and teenagers. How incredible. The federal government didnt want to step in. Donald trump didnt want to step in because he was told by his people that his voters supported vaping. But lawsuits were taken by families against these companies that were targeting their children, and they paid a huge, massive price for it. Look what happened. I mean, over time, they finally were forced to stop marketing to middle schoolers and teenagers. You know, same thing goes with guns. You look at guns. Legislators wont Pass Gun laws, but there have been Class Action lawsuits in connecticut. Were now seeing criminal charges against parents that wont lock up their guns inside their own house and keep them safe. Keep people in the Community Safe when they have a troubled Son Or Daughter in their house. And so we actually have to turn to the courts who do provide justice when our Politicians Wont provide Common Sense. Yeah. You know, its interesting. Think about smoking, how prevalent it was when we were growing up. Youd go out, and everybody is smoking on the street corner, in bars, public places. America just decided that we didnt have to go on like that. Too many people were dying of Lung Cancer, that it was bad for people. How thats been kind of marginalized to some effect. And then into that void Stepped Vaping, which is a fantasized version of smoking. As you said, marketed to kids with Bubble Gum, Cotton Candy flavors, the packaging. It is epidemic and continues to be in many places. But the court, the government, and, as you said, frankly, parents said, we cant go down this road. Too many kids are addicted and hurt by it. They were able to do something. To the larger point, when our society, when america decides something is bad for us and particularly bad for our kids, like were seeing in our schools again this week, we can do something about it. We can have the will to change something thats hurting young people in this country. And thats yet another conversation. Yeah. Coming up, the Kansas City Chiefs kick off their backtoback super Bowl Title Defense win with a win over the baltimore ravens. Well have the highlights from last nights nfl opener. Yes touchdown what a play. The Runners Toe was Out Of Bounds. Its an incomplete pass. The game is over. Kansas city has won. Wow. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the baltimore ravens. He said A Toe. It was A Toenail last night in the Nfl Regular Season opener. The Ravens Lastsecond Touchdown on the last play of regulation was waved off. Initially called a touchdown. Video review shows tight End Isaiah likely did, yeah, looks like his toe was just in the white there, putting him Out Of Bounds, giving the chiefs a 2720 win to open their pursuit of a record third consecutive Super Bowl title. Patrick mahomes threw for 291 and a touchdown. This one to Rookie Receiver Xavier worthy, who ran a 4. 2 at the combine. Rushing for this score in his nfl debut. Turning on the jets. The chiefs won the rematch of last seasons Afc Championship game. Also beating the ravens for the fifth time in six meetings. The nfl hosts its very first game in south america tonight. The Green Bay Packers take on the eagles in sao paolo, brazil. Its the first Opening Game on a friday since 70. Live coverage will be available exclusively on peacock. Joining us now, best selling author, veteran sports analyst, Mike Lupica. And espns meadowlark medias Pablo Torre. We had maybe the two best teams in the nfc who may meet again down the road in the playoffs, decided by A Toenail. Taylor swift was in the crowd. What else could you ask for on Opening Night . This was optimism about the biggest tent in american life coming back. Everybody gathering underneath it. Only to realize, i think the chiefs are going to get away with it again. The chiefs are on the brink, and i say the brink after the first game, because thats how confident i am in them, of being the first team, willie, to be a threepeat. Dont Say It. Backtoback. Come on. To back. Come on. Lemire, a patriots fan, is like, why dont people hate the chiefs like they hated my team . Turn on them already. I will defend this total insecurity by pointing out that this is a team that is by itself, okay . They werent that good last year. They won the Super Bowl because they made a run in the postseason. Defense was underrated. Theyre better this year. They have a cosmic toenail deciding game one. You tell me how good you feel betting against that team. Well, ill tell ya, i dont feel great betting against them. Mike lupica, they had a horrible first half of the season last year. They were mediocre. In part, it was because all the defenses knew it was going to be mahomes going to travis kelce. You look last night. I will say, even though hes got himself lathered up, already in mid season form, pablo does, i will say, this is such a dangerous offense. You know, last year, it was the defense that kept them in until mahomes could do his magic in the playoffs. Last night, you had rice repeatedly down field. Kelce, worthy, extraordinary. Of course, taytay up in the box. I mean, this is a team with so many more weapons for this year than last year. It has to scare some defenses. Im not ready to say theyll threepeat. I will say, though, man, the difference between the start of this year and last year for the chiefs on the offensive side of the ball, pretty extraordinary. When you look at Patrick Mahomes, joe, at his best, hes the best player ive ever seen. I know brady is the g. O. A. T. Seven Super Bowls, into his 40s, all that stuff. But when this young man is at his best, because of the element of running to go with throwing, he is the best ive ever seen. I was thinking last night, when is the nfl going to catch a break . As you said, taylor is in the stands. You have the reigning mvp in lamar. And then you have an ending, the only ending i can remember like that in sports is a few years ago when Kevin Durant lost his season with the nets because his toe was on the line one time against the bucks. It is crazy to bet against the chiefs. They have become the single most glamorous team we have in american sports, and mahomes is the biggest star right now. Wow. Mahomes again, you put mahomes in the playoffs. Mahomes played against a Fantastic 49ers Team last year in the playoffs. But, you know, jonathan, going into it, for those who had seen what happened when montana went into the playoffs every time, and some people would say a kid from michigan who ended up in new england, you know, i thought going in that mahomes had it. I will tell you, again, the first half of their season, again, pretty terrible. Not last night. This team, theyve started out on all cylinders. So we will see what happens moving forward. But, you know, last year, the problem was if youre a defensive coordinator, youre like, this is whats going to happen. Chiefs are going to come out, try to run the ball, and then mahomes will try to throw to kelce. That was the first half of the season. That was it. They piled up on kelce. Oh, hes too old. What happened to kelce . Then they got rice. Rice who is now managed to keep himself out of trouble the last 14, 15 days. Then they drafted worthy. Oh, my god, not just catching the ball, but on the reverses and up the middle, that guy is unbelievable. Then, of course, taylor in the stands. But they have so many weapons that, suddenly, youre not just focused on mahomes, youre not just focused on kelce. They have the ability to spread out the best defenses in football. To underscore The Point, they shouldnt have won last year. They did last year largely because of the defense. Now, theyre better. Mahomes was funny after The Game, asked about the final play. Thats why i tell my guy, wear white cleats. If the Tight End was wearing white cleats, you probably couldnt have told whether or not he hit the line. Could have changed The Game. Pablo, lets Move On to other story lines. See . Wear white cleats. Veteran savvy. We were robbed of this. Harbaugh was about to go for two. Ultimate drama in the nfl. Trying to win The Game at The End in regulation. Instead, look, one more point on mahomes before we Move On to the rest of the league, which is worthy of consideration. Theres the beginnings of a jordan dynamic here, john. I say that because there are all these greats, all their competitors. Lamar jackson, mvp. All these other guys in his generation who are being reduced to the Dust Bin of history, potentially, the carl malone, The Other Guys who never won because dude, they lost by A Toe joe burrow. They lost by A Toe get a cold shower, man. It was just A Toe he lost by. You cannot yuck my yum. What is yuck it. Huh . Revisit the tape at The End of the year and tell me how much lather i really got. Pablo, lets give you a number here, an over under. 4. 5, the number of plays Aaron Rodgers played this year. Last year, he hit the under on that. This year, what do you think . Are these jets going to be good . The jets, by The Way, won seven games last year. That was without Aaron Rodgers. If the line is 4. 5 and the question is how many fourhour podcasts will he release this season about various ancient conspiracy theories, i would say probably, hopefully, hopefully take the under because hes learned his lesson about how this is just not going to work like this anymore. But the reality of Aaron Rodgers now is if they do gnat make the playoffs, having won seven games last season without him, we probably shouldnt talk about him anymore. Or listen to him in any meaningful sense. Hes one of the great quarterbacks weve ever seen. He is the other guy in that historical photo next to tom brady, the other guy you have to say and consider and acknowledge. But if the jets dont make the playoffs with this guy, john, what a humiliation. What a disaster. Because they paid him all this money. The most powerful person in the building, as everyone in New York knows, yet i dont think it is guaranteed. Mike lupica, weigh in as the New Yorker on the jets, what you think the prospects will be. Aaron rodgers in his 40s, coming off the achilles injury. Also another team you love, the packers to keep an eye on. Willie, when you look at rodgers, truly only one quarterback has ever played at a high level after the age of 40. Thats tom brady. He is 40 years old. Hell turn 41 the first week of december. He is coming off what could be a catastrophic injury in sports, an achilles, okay . He hasnt played a real game since january of 23. He did only play the four plays last year. At The End in green bay, people forget this, he lost to the 49ers at home in a playoff game. Then in the last game of the season, it was like a playoff game, at lambeau field, he lost to the lions. So what Aaron Rodgers are we going to get . People can say, he looked great many practice. Yeah, i look great on the Practice Green of the golf course, too. This is going to be a difference in San Francisco on Monday Night. They have become in one year the greatest Reality Series Weve got in sports. Its the real quarterbacks of new jersey. He is, to me, as great as he has been, and he has played The Game at the highest possible level, hes the Mystery Guest of this season. Were going to start finding out on Monday Night exactly how much game he has left. Pablo is right, they turned the whole organization over to this guy. If this doesnt work, if they dont at least make the playoffs, this will be one of the this will be the most Jets Thing that has ever happened. All right. Lets go around and, before we go, ask everybody their pretexts for the Super Bowl. We start where we always start every year, with the woman who guessed correctly, i think for the past seven seasons, mika brzezinski, who is it going to be . Dont yuck my yum. Lionschiefs. Thats my pick, as well. The lions and chiefs. Willie, whats your pick . Im going to go chiefs, never bet against the chiefs to threepeat, and ill go, blindly, shocker, the New York giants. Under my guy. Oh, no. Come on. No. Gunslinger. Can we just someone over there right now . Fast, commercial. I say that admitting that i have been looking at next Years Draft Board for quarterback, Carson Beck out of georgia. Yeah. [ laughter ] there is a sadness in willies pick. There really is. Vanderbilt pick. The characters in darkness on the edge of town. Were sad for him. Lets Move On to Jonathan Lemire. Hes still working on it. Your super Bowl Pick . I can be honest about how the patriots will be terrible this year. Willie cant do that for the giants. Ill pick green bay. I think theyre an up and coming team, part of the nfc. Im desperate to pick anyone other than kansas city, but i cant. Chiefs, as well. Pablo. At the risk of echoing both of you guys, mika and joe, i do think its chiefslions. I think Joe Scarboroughs lions are due for a Super Bowl berth. Not their first win ever. Again, the lathered up chiefs. But thats where the wise money is this season. Lupica . I agree with mr. Lemire. I think the packers are not only the youngest team in the league. They might be the second most talented after the chiefs. I think jordan love, the Packers Quarterback who could get to the Super Bowl before Aaron Rodgers does. Really good. Again, i love mahomes and the chiefs. Patrick mahomes was back in season last night. Thats a good deal. Gene robinson . Im not going to pick the washington commanders, though we have a great, young quarterback in jayden daniels. Well see how they do at the recently renamed northwest stadium. Its not fedex field anymore. Were excited about that. But Super Bowl, im going to go ravenslions. Okay. I just think it can happen. If he had cut the toenail, you know, the ravens would have had a chance to win that game. Okay. I like what i saw last night. They were uneven. Offensive line is just getting started. I think theyre going to be really good. I think youre right. Katty kay, Man City or liverpool . [ laughter ] i thought you were going to let me weigh in on the Super Bowl, and i was going to say, you should never, ever obviously, dont bet against mika on anything to do with sports. Whatever mika says, i go to. Learned that. Tom would never forgive me if i didnt say city. There you go. Well, it appears the morning Joe Consensus is chiefs against the lions. Yeah, there you go. Well see. What about you, joe . I said chiefs and lions, as well. Okay. Mike lupica, Pablo Torre, thank you very much for coming on this morning. I just cant get over that phrase. Im never going to forget it. Dont yuck. I dont know if its okay. We deserve our own yums is what im saying. Thats all. Yeah. Well sink in a quick 90second break. Reset. Escort pablo off the set. Remove him. Stay with us. Well be right back. Custom ink helps us motivate our students with custom gear. We love how Custom Ink takes Care Of everything we need so we can focus on the kids. Can you commit to prioritizing legislation to make Child Care affordable . If so, what specific piece of legislation will you advance . Well, i would do that. Were sitting down. You know, i was somebody we had Senator Marco Rubio and my daughter, ivanka, was so impactful on that issue. Its a very important issue. But i think when you talk about the kind of numbers im talking about, that because Child Care is Child Care. Couldnt you know, its something you have to have in this country. You have to have it. When you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers im talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that theyre not used to but theyll get used to it quickly. Its not going to stop them from Doing Business with us, but theyll have a substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers were talking about, including Child Care. I think we have time for one more. Bart simpson . Is your Book Report on Treasure Island ready . Is it ready . What a question. Fellow students, prepare to be dazzled. Well, as already mentioned, the name of the book i read was tree Treasure Island. Its about pirates with patches over their eyes and shiny gold teeth. And green birds on their shoulders. Did i mention this book was written by A Guy Named Robert Lewis Stevenson and published by the good people at mcgrawhill . In conclusion, on the scale of one to ten, ten being the highest, one being the lowest, and five being average, i give this book a nine. Any questions . No . Ill just sit down. Bart, did you read the book . I am insulted. Is this a Book Report or a Witch Hunt . Perhaps youd like to tell us the name of the pirate. Captain nemo, hook, long john silver, bluebeard. Ill see you after class. Ah. That looks awfully familiar. Jonathan lemire and Katty Kay still with us. Yeah, not just on the simp simpsons but at home. That was rough. Joining us, we have mike barnicle. The host of the podcast on brand with donny deutsch, donny deutsch. Donny probably had a few of those cohosts. Someone who did not, cohost of The Weekend, symone sanders townsend. Its interesting. Look at what Donald Trump and those that desperately want a guy who wants to be an autocrat in office, wants him to be elected, and theyll accuse Kamala Harris of engaging in Word Salad. When there, you saw Donald Trump 3 feet deep in lettuce, croutons, and spinach fragments. Yeah. Its just like accusing her of changing her positions when Donald Trump changes his positions on Abortion Day by day, saying he is going to be a champion for womens reproductive rights. The next day, saying hes not going to be a champion of womens reproductive rights. Then the next day saying hes going to vote for getting rid of a Sixweek Ban in florida. Then the next day he says hes going to vote against it. Then having a speech saying, we need to let as many immigrants in as we can. I mean, again, if you look at her Approval Rating right now, you look at Kamala Harris on the issues, their attacks arent hitting because whatever they want to accuse her of, Donald Trump is actually more guilty. In this case, Word Salad . Please. Mika said the people that were up there keeping a straight face after asking the question deserved oh, my gosh. Zoom in on those folks. Yeah, those were serious people. This was not a Rally Crowd he was addressing. The phrase of the day has to be Child Care is Child Care. Wow, we didnt know that. It was an important thing. Look, hes gotten away with this all of his life. Hell continue to get away with it until election day. He wont change. He is an inch deep and a mile wide. Always has been. Its gibberish. He might as well get up there and go, humana, humana, the jackie gleeson stuff. This is The End of it. I have a feeling that in this country called america, he is an old, tired act. People dont like reruns. You dont buy netflix to watch reruns. You want something new, something promising. Elections are about the future, as was said A Million times. This man is the past. Just a few days ago, we heard Trump Talk about the weave and how he would try to connect all these ideas together. That wasnt the weave. That was the weave . That wasnt the weave. It was pure nonsense, donny. I have to say, if President Biden had offered an answer like that at any point, you can see the Screaming Headlines questioning his fitness for office. I think trump deserves that same sort of scrutiny here, clearly. I think, to mikes point, you know, thats sort of his act. Whether it is tired, whether its old. The contrast of a future, a vision or the future is going to be on full display in just a few days. Donald trump is going to be on the Debate Stage with Vice President Kamala Harris. Not only is the Age Gap suddenly advantage democrats, but if he starts talking like that and shes the prosecutor and can put Convict Versus Con on display, could be a long night for the republican nominee. Look, you have two things going to be going on that night. You have two characters, one old, one new, one yesterday, one tomorrow. But on the issues, and thats what i love, and i love, joe, you talked about this earlier, i talk about this, when people go, i dont like Donald Trump but am voting for him on the issues, first of all, what are the issues . Number one, crime is down 24 in this country. The economy every which way, gdp, jobs, well get a Jobs Number this morning, everything is through the roof. On immigration, you have the argument that, basically, the Lankford Bill was killed by republicans. You have the old persona and dont have issues anymore. Im looking forward to people say debates dont matter. Well, the last debate mattered bigly, as Donald Trump would say. Well see contrast on issues, which democrats win, and contrast on the Human Characterization that the democrats will win, also. Donald trump looked like me a few minutes ago being asked for my super Bowl Pick. Worried about you. I need more time to do research. Can i get back to you is what we both should have said in that moment. But youre talking about the debate. Donald trump was asked by Sean Hannity about a strategy for the debate thats Coming Up now in just four days. Heres what he said. When i had biden, you and i had the same discussion. Yeah. I let him talk. Im going to let her talk. A debate is interesting. You really could go in with all the strategy you want, but you have to feel it out as the debate is taking place. Ive seen it. Go in with a strategy. Mike tyson made the statement, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Its true. It was a brilliant statement. Its a brilliant statement. [ applause ] i can tell, sean, exactly what im going to do, but, you know, things change. It depends a lot on abc. Will they be fair or not . If theyre not going to be fair, im going to be a little different than if they are. I hope theyre going to be fair. That is one of the alltime great pieces from Donald Trump there i mean from Mike Tie tyson. Hes right about that. Symone, lets talk about The Other Side, Vice President harris, someone you worked for previously. The bar from the previous June Debate is relatively low with what biden did which changed this race and perhaps history. How should she be looking at this debate . Willie, i think the Vice President should look at the debate as an opportunity to speak directly to the american people. There will not be an audience in the debate hall. Itll be Donald Trump, Vice President harris, and the moderators. There could be a tendency, because this is how Donald Trump operate, to get caught up in the Back And Forth with him. Finding those moments to turn directly to the camera and the Vice President looking directly into the camera, talking to the folks watching, letting them know that she sees them and her agenda, what she is calling her, you know, opportunity agenda, opportunity economy, is one that is for them and shes going to fight for them. How different than from the other person standing on the stage will be very important. I know theyre in pittsburgh down the prep. You can do it in Howard University where she did it in 2020. Even earlier this year, she was at howard. But being in pittsburgh, getting earned media for being in the city, being in the state of pennsylvania, having the opportunity to pop out and do off the record stops while coming in and, you know, honing the message. Look, i think the Vice President has been in a number of debates throughout her career, so shes no stranger to them. Donald trump is a little different of an animal. Is he going to walk up on her . Im sure they practiced that. What will you do, juxtaposing from what Secretary Clinton did in 2016. All those things matter. Can i say something about Child Care . Um, Donald Trump not only was it a Word Salad. He seems to not understand Child Care in america. That is a huge thing for a former President Of The United States and someone who would like the job again, to not understand the biggest bill that families have. The tariffs he wants to put on china are not going to aleve the Child Care issue. Like, they didnt real leave the issues for the farmers the last time he put the tariffs on. The government just gaye out billions and billions of dollars throughout Donald Trumps presidency. There is a precedent here. The fact, the fact he does not understand Child Care in america, the biggest bill for families and one of the biggest bills for families in this country, in my opinion, should be disqualifying, or at least should warrant more questions. I dont know. Yeah. Really good. Literally the only Child Care proposal ive heard from the Trump Campaign is Jd Vance suggesting aunts and uncles should step in, who have children of their own and need Child Care of their own, and it falls to grandparents who may live on The Other Side of the country. Not really a proposal. I reached out, mike, to somebody who works with Donald Trump and debate prep. Debate prep for trump isnt time to brush up on policy. It is to finetune the theatrics of his performance. Whats the risk there for Kamala Harris . Because we know hes going to go into this wanting to get under her skin, wanting to rattle her. He did manage to rattle a couple of times Hillary Clinton when he debated her in 2016, 2020. Im not counting 2020 because it wasnt a debate. It was a freak show, honestly. What do you think the risks are for Kamala Harris going into this . I think the biggest risk of Kamala Harris is gender, her gender. Shes a female. This is still a sexist society we live in, in large part. Donald trumps base is guys, bros, you know, Trump Bros. She risks being overly aggressive. How does she handle him . Symone said, if he walks up on her, what she should do, turn to him and say, whats up with this . Something short and simple. Her risk is coming across as being too aggressive. There is a Fine Line to draw between being a prosecutor and really getting into the issues and displaying the fact that, what we were just talking about, Child Tax Care credit, does he know how it works . He has no clue how it works with american families, none, zero. Those are disqualifying factors that symone pointed out. Make him explain legislation that he promises to pass. He cant. Interesting. Interesting. I kind of think on the gender issue, shes got that. At the same time, to mikes point, Donald Trump doesnt play by the rules. He doesnt care about the truth. He throws so much against the l wall, weve seen him time and time again run over very talented, intelligent people. Theres lots of risk. Whats the key for Kamala Harris and the base . First of all, Kamala Harris can have a plan. We know what Donald Trumps act is. Hell say he had the greatest economy ever. Bidenharris had the worst economy ever. Hes going to say the border was more secure than ever under him, and now its a crazy border, most of all time. He is going to exaggerate wildly and try to provoke. Youll hear people say, oh, the prosecutor versus the felon. Thats not the approach, i believe, personally, that will work. I think the most important thing is she takes the happy warrior, she takes that persona that weve seen at one Campaign Speech after another Campaign Speech to another. And she takes that into the debate and is the happy warrior. When Donald Trump gives an answer like that, she smiles, shakes her head like Ronald Reagan did. Doesnt have to say, there he goes again. She can say, okay, since he didnt answer the question, he me answer the question. Its really pretty simple. It has nothing to do with tariffs, and then she just, again, goes through it. Again, the happy Warrior Deal is so important because everybody that has debated against Donald Trump has acted shocked, stunned, deeply saddened. I mean, straight out of the rut. You dont do what Donald Trumps past opponents have done. Dont be horiied that he lies. Hes going to lie. Be ready when he lies for your response. Dont be horriies when he exaggerates his record or says how horrible your record is and is wrong. Be there with a smile. Like Ronald Reagan did when they said he was a warmonger that was going to lead us to World War iii or cut Medicare And Medicaid, smile and say, there you go again. Let me tell you the truth. That was a real Turning Point for reagan in 1980 against Jimmy Carter. Yeah. Its so important that shes the happy warrior throughout this entire debate. I also wonder, do moderators correct lies when there is, like, a Fire Hose its not their job. For people that whine about that, thats the candidates job. Youd hope the moderators would follow up, but they havent done a good job. Its a long list. Right. I hope they ask of things hes said of late, like interfering with elections. I hope the questions are pertinent. They havent been in the past. I know. Again, she cant depend on that. She has to, again, understand, willie, i mean, she has to understand that this is so much having to do with The Way her message is presented and The Way Donald Trumps message is presented. Again, she has all the Game Film on this guy going back to 2016. Seems like dozens of debates against one shocked and stunned and deeply saddened Republican Or Democrat after another. She can look at the Game Films and can look at everything that has not worked. Then be the happy warrior. Give the facts. Instead of being shocked and stunned at Donald Trump, just shake her head going, my gosh, you know, in effect saying, how did we survive four years with this guy . Maybe you invoke Ronald Reagan with a smile on your face, there you go again. You keep telling the same lies over and over and over again. Its part of the frustration with president Bidens Performance at the debate, beyond the, obviously, the viral moments that were troubling, was the fact for a lot of democrats and people watching at home, that Donald Trump kept throwing hanging curve balls over the middle of the plate. Frankly, people who watch this show every day could answer and rebut and say, no, no, no, actually, on immigration, you killed the biggest piece of legislation thats come around in generations. So she knows. Shes a prosecutor, yes. You dont even have to be a prosecutor. You have to be smart, which she is. You have to have studied the issues, which she has. You have to know Donald Trump, as you say. Weve watched this act now for a decade in politics. You know and i know what answers are coming, the facts to respond with, and i think, and i think her team believes that Vice President harris will be ready. Symone sanders townsend, thanks for coming on. What will you be looking at on The Weekend . Obviously, well be diving into some Debate Predictions and whatnot. We will have a number of guests from the Battleground States. We also have two State Party chairs that are Coming Up this weekend. Democratic State Party chairs talking about the organizing in their states. Were getting ready for the democracy live Msnbc Event in brooklyn. Amazing. Well be watching The Weekend beginning at 8 00 a. M. On saturdays and sundays, right here on msnbc. Symone, thank you. Ahead on Morning Joe, the August Jobs report will come out in just a little bit. It could be pivotal in determining The Future Of Federal Reserve policy. Well break down the new numbers and what they could mean for the economy. First, President Biden will sign an executive Order Today aimed at boosting the middle class. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Is Standing By and joins us to weigh in on that. You are watching Morning Joe. Well be right back. Can you commit to prioritizing legislation to make Child Care affordable . And if so, what specific piece of legislation will you advance . Well, i would do that, and were sitting down. You know, i was somebody we had Senator Marco Rubio and my daughter ivanka was so impactful on that issue. Its a very important issue. But i think when you talk about the kind of numbers im talking about, that because, look, Child Care is Child Care. It couldnt you know, its something you have to have it. In this country, you have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that im talking about, by taxing foreign nations at levels that theyre not used to but theyll get used to it very quickly. And its not going to stop them from Doing Business with us, but theyll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that were talking about, including Child Care. What youve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things i have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. What is going on in the Frequent Flyer Programs . Yeah. For what its worth, we have a new rule, if you pay for wifi and dont get it, you get your money back. We can talk about that another time. Good. Todays action is really about making sure were protecting the value of these points and miles. We love our points and miles. Theyve really become an important part of the economy in many ways. Its an important part of the airlines business, and families view it as part of their savings. You count on them as youre saving up for a vacation. But unlike the dollars in your savings account, the value of your points and miles could be changed at any time by an airline. Really for any reason. Thats what were concerned about. So this is a hard look at the practices around these points and miles. Were hearing a lot of stories about them being suddenly devalued or you go to book a flight, and theres just no way you can actually use these points and miles. Its especially important because people are being told you can use this to pay for your next vacation, when theyre signing up for Credit Cards. Sometimes Credit Cards that have a high annual fee or a higher annual Percentage Rate than other Credit Cards. We want to make sure that anything going on in this area is transparent, that its fair, and, most importantly, that passengers, consumers get the deal they were promised. Mr. Secretary, i have another question on the delight, the nightmare that is commercial Air Travel in america today. This has been a summer of cancellations and massive delays on flights, and im wondering, is it the lack of pilots . Is it the lack of Air Traffic controllers . Is it the lack of Ground Crews . Or is it just the mediocre aspect of the airlines that people travel . Well, theres a lot of ingredients that go into those headaches. Weather has been a big one this summer. Weve also pressed the airlines to be better able to service the schedules that theyre selling. Now, in all fairness, theyve definitely improved their results last year with the lowest race of calculations weve seen in about a decade, but it doesnt feel that way if youre on one of the canceled flights. Its happened to me. Thats one of the reasons why, with flight rights. Gov, the rules and protections were putting in, were making sure if that does happen to you, youre taken Care Of. You have to have clear expectations around when theyll pick up your hotel, your ground transportation, how to get rebooked. Making sure that you get your money back automatically, which is new this year. If your flight is canceled, we had too many cases where you have to fight just to get money that the rules say should already be coming back to you. Were going to keep pressing on a number of these different measures to improve passengers experience. These frustrations have been mounting for years, and i believe in using the tools of government, the tools of our department to deliver a better experience for passengers. Also, as we mentioned, president Joe Biden is going to be traveling to Michigan Today to unveil a Landmark Executive Order to support americas workforce, dubbed the good jobs Executive Order. The plan sets new Labor Standards across the board. To make sure those standards are met, the Executive Order creates a new Task Force to oversee the changes. What kinds of changes, specifically, are we talking about, mr. Secretary . Yeah, im really looking forward to serving on this Task Force that the president is putting together. Its the first time there has been a government wide Executive Order like this, laying out the different steps that we all need to be taking across our agencies to make sure that the jobs were creating with all these programs, like the infrastructure bill, are good paying jobs. That includes a safety element, looking after the Safety Provisions there. Things like prevailing wage. Making sure those requirements are actually being met. And its things like Project Labor agreements, which are an important tool that can help many projects go more smoothly and deliver the kinds of Community Benefits and worker benefits that are expected. Look, this builds on work that President Biden has been leading really from day one. That pension, the butch lewis act, the Pension Act that really saved pensions for millions of workers is a huge deal. So is the update to construction wages, prevailing wage, davis bacon. All of these things that unions have been trying to get done for a long time but really encountered a lot of hostility during the Trump Administration to anything they were trying to do for workers. This is a new day, and this is about really putting that Down In Black And White so that its not just something you see as one initiative from one president , but just a new way of Doing Business in this country. Mr. Secretary, i was going to ask about unions. Weve seen unions have a day in the united states over the course of the last year or so. Is this Executive Order meant to cover workers who are not covered by unions . Is it meant to work alongside what unions are doing . Is it replacing Union Work to some extent . How do the two work together . Yeah, its really building on this record of supporting unions. That does mean making sure that Union Workers get a fair voice in these processes. Thats part of what you get through Project Labor agreements. But you mentioned Something Else that is important, which is so many workers who are not benefitting from being part of organized labor right now but they want to be. In my field of transportation, for example, you know, many workers in transportation are famously unionized. Of course, whether youre talking about teamsters, Airline Pilots and Flight Attendants, or any number of other fields. But if you think about a lot of other workers who dont have those protections, theyre some of the most vulnerable. For example, when you get on a flight, before you see the Flight Attendant and the pilot who are unionized, chances are, youre going to Cross Paths with somebody pushing a wheelchair who isnt. They are among some of the lowest paid workers in our aviation system. Yet, there are some of those who would benefit the most from that kind of support and, you know, for a lot of passengers, they cant get where theyre going without them. People who are involved in the preparation of food, theres a new contract for workers at gate gourmet, but others dont have those benefits. We need to make sure through things like this Executive Order that were looking at ways to support them in their desire to exercise their legal right, that free and fair choice to join a union. And working to make sure wages are higher across the board. So every worker can benefit from the economic growth thats going on in this country right now. Donald trump continued his attacks on jewish Democrats Yesterday while speaking to a crowd of jewish republicans. The former president told the republican jewish coalition, israel will no longer exist if Vice President Kamala Harris is elected. Trump also questioned how jewishamericans could vote for democrats. Harrisbiden administration has sought to cast blame for these death on israel. They have not been your friends. I dont understand how anybody can support them, and i Say It constantly. If youve had dems to support, youve have to have your head examined. Theyve been very bad to you. I can say, honestly, that we got 25 of the vote. We got 26 after four years, after i did more for israel than any other president , by far. And this year, were probably around a 50 mark, but i only ask you, who are the 50 of jewish people that are voting for these people that hate israel and dont like the jewish people . Why are they voting . How do they exist . Kamala harris will support unlimited migration from terrorist hotbeds into the united states and will totally abandon israel. Youre going to be abandoned if she becomes president. I think you have to explain that to your people because they dont know it. They have no idea what theyre getting into. Youre not going to have an israel if they become if she becomes president. Israel will no longer exist. Israel will no longer exist, says Donald Trump, donny deutsch, about Kamala Harris, if shes elected. Obviously, trump is speaking to a friendly audience of republicans in that room, but he keeps saying this over and over and over again. Effectively, you cant really be jewish and not vote for me. First of all, im jewish, proud jew, am voting for Kamala Harris, and i find Donald Trump frightening in many, many ways. First of all, just a little history, the jews have not done well with authoritarian figures over time. Donald trump, his heros are putin, xi, orban, and other authoritarians. His exwife said he had a book of mein kampf next to his best bed. This is not a guy who i have a lot of trust in. He is transactional and does when he is best for him. If what is best for him is for the jews, hell do it. If whats best for him is not for the jews, hell do it. To say something so insane, that Israel Wont exist if Kamala Harris is a president , its disgusting. He is a fear monger. The majority of jews do Vote Democrat and will continue in this election, so i think we need our heads examined. Screw you, Donald Trump. You are repulsive. Okay. Lets revisit a conversation we had yesterday on the show that we want to continue now. The department of justice has indicted a Music Producer for fraud, alleging he used bots and a. I. Generated songs to rack up 10 Million in royalties from streaming services. According to the indictment, producer Michael Smith created a. I. Generated music and played it billions of times using bots he had programmed, a Warning Sign of how a. I. Could be abused moving forward. Our next guest has written extensively about the threat a. I. Poses to the social order. Joining us once again, New York times best selling author, yuval noah harari, talking about his book, nexus, from the Stone Age to a. I. Lets talk about a. I. This time. Yuval, im curious, if you look at this case, and theres got to be millions now of opportunities for people to abuse a. I. , are we behind, too far behind to catch up with the forces of this . No, we are not too far behind. The power is still in our hands, but it is flipping from our hands and shifting to the a. I. What everybody should understand about a. I. , a. I. Is not a tool. It is an agent. It is the first technology in history that can make decisions by itself, that can create new ideas by itself, and, therefore, can take power away from us. An Atom Bomb ultimately empowered Human Beings because it was the bomb could not decide anything and could not create new bombs. But a. I. Can do that. Let me tell you one small story about what a new generation of a. I. Can do. When openai developed gpt 4, they wanted to test what this thing can do. They gave it a test to solve capture puzzles. Capture puzzles are visual puzzles you get when you try to access the website and the website wants to know if you are a human oro bot. Gpt 4 could not solve by itself the capture puzzle. What it did, it accessed an online Web Page where you can hire humans to do jobs for you, task rabbit. It asked a human worker, please where you can hire humans to do jobs for you, task rabbit. It asked the human worker please solve the puzzle for me. This is the interesting point. The human got suspicious. It asked, why do we need somebody to do this for you . Are you a robot . Then g54 told the human, no, im not a robot, i have a vision impairment so i cant see the puzzle. This is why i need help. The human was duped and did it for it. Its already able to invent things and manipulate people. That example strikes me as terrifying. We think of a. I. As being cold and dissipationate. You make the make the distinction that theyre becoming very good at reading human emotions, understanding our emotional patterns and manipulating them. This can be used for good purposes. You can have a. I. Teachers and doctors that understand our emotional situation, but it can also be used to manipulate people on a large scale, selling us everything from products to politicians. You know, previously there was a battle for human attention if you wanted to influence the elections. The key was how to grab human attention. Now the battle is shifting from attention to intimacy. You can deploy armies of bots that are able to converse with us as if theyre Human Beings and nothing sways human opinion more than intimate conversations with somebody that you consider your friend. A. I. Has no emotions. No. Its emotionless. Thats in opposition to us, Human Beings. From time and memorial every Human Being you encounter on the face of the earth has a story. Everyone has a story. What happens to our stories when a. I. Gets into the business of telling stories, fake stories . It endangers the conversation. I mean, its the first time in history that we have to deal and, you know, we have to deal not just with one in Hollywood Science Fiction movies its one big computer trying to take over the world. Its not. Imagine millions and millions of a. I. Bureaucrats making decisions about us in the banks and so forth, a. I. Story tellers that we encounter online and try to change our opinions. Society is being flooded with these kinds of alien intelligences that they have no emotions of their own, but theyre very good at understanding and manipulating human emotions. We are helpless in the face of this flood. We can regulate it. One very creative regulation should be that a. I. S are welcome to human conversations as long as they identify as a. I. S. Its the same basic principle we have for humans against fraud. You cannot pretend to be a doctor if youre not. You cannot pretend to be a lawyer if youre not. Also, you should not pretend to be a human if youre not. Okay. The new book is entitled nexus, theres so much there. A brave history from the Stone Age to a. I. Fascinating. It goes on sale this coming tuesday, september 10th. New york times bestselling author yuval noah harari, thank you very much. Thank you. For coming on the show. Thank you. Take care. Good Morning And Welcome to Morning Joe. Its friday, september 6th. Along with joe, willie and me we have white House Bureau Chief Jonathan Lemire, u. S. Special correspondent for Bbc Katy Kay is with us. Eugene robinson is here and author Charlie Sykes is here. Well start this hour with we have a lot of stuff to talk about this morning. Willie, mika said we must start with the nfl. I really didnt. I want to just dive right in. What a start. What an incredible start to the season. Ravens chiefs, yes, Taylor Swift in the stands. It came down literally to half A Toe. A touchdown it looked like on the last play of The Game. Baltimore down 7 with five seconds in The Game. Lamar jackson does a pirouette, scrambles in the pocket. Throws one to his Tight End. Looks like a touchdown. Theyre down 1. Theyre going for the 2point conversion, but the refs say the tip of the toe is just Out Of Bounds on the replay. Looks like theyre right. Oh, look how close that is. Ball game over. Chiefs win 2720. What a beginning to the season. What an incredible start to the season. Well talk a lot more about the nfl with a cast of thousands. Mika very excited about it. I am. Why dont we start the politics. Oh, good. The Harris Walz Campaign and the dnc raised 361 Million last month. Those numbers will help as theres very little time in terms of trying to put it into action. They can work on Down Ballot races and shore up the democrats. Theyve already given Jonathan Lemire 25 Million to Down Ballot races. Im sure something that scared a lot of democrats. Shes bringing in so much money right now. Theyre going to be able to focus on their own Ground Game. From everybody i talk to on the ground and in the Swing States it is the Ground Game right now where harris holds a big advantage. Close races, they feel confident. Yeah, and the Harris Team inherited structural advantages from Joe Bidens Campaign which build up a significant Ground Game. Her team has added to it. They have a significant advantage over trump. 360 million, thats more than three times what trump raised in august, which has allowed harris to give money away to Down Ballot races. We had a republican congressman on the record saying if the Trajectory Holds he fears the gop is going to lose the house and he blames also the leadership of the house republicans, Speaker Johnson included, in the lack of any Policy Progress made for that as well. We should also note that having this much money, having this much cash on hand, really frees up the Vice President in these last two months. Shes not going to need to do a lot of fundraising. Shes not going to need to make trips to donors to ask for more money. They can do It Grassroots and do it online and she can spend her time campaigning in those seven Battleground States where polls show a tight race. Which is what Kamala Harris is doing. Meanwhile Donald Trump spoke yesterday to the economic club of New York. He was asked for specifics on how his administration would make Child Care more affordable, specific legislation. Listen. If you win in november, can you commit to prioritizing legislation to make Child Care affordable . And if so, what specific piece of legislation will you advance . I would do that. Were sitting down you know, i was somebody we had Senator Marco Rubio and my daughter ivanka was so impactful on that issue. When you talk about the numbers im talking about that because Child Care is Child Care. Its you know, its something you have to have. In this country you have to have it. When you talk about those numbers compared to what im talking about taxing foreign nations at levels theyre not used to, but theyll get used to it quickly. Its not going to stop them from Doing Business with us. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers, including Child Care, its going to Take Care i look forward to having no deficit in a short period of time. Coupled with the reductions i told you about on Waste And Fraud and all the other things going on in our country. I have to stay with Child Care. I want to stay with Child Care. Those numbers are small relative to the economic numbers im talking about, including growth. Growth also headed up by what the plan is that i just told you about. Were going to be taking in trillions of dollars. As much as Child Care is talked about as being expensive, its relatively speaking were going to make this an incredible country. Lets help other people, but lets take Care Of our country first. This is about america first. Its about Make America great again. Well take Care Of it. Thank you. Very good question. And thus ends the sixth Grade Book Report presentation. Little donny obviously did not read his mika, that took me back to i must admit Freshman Year in college i was supposed to read a book and went in and dr. Brownie asked me what the book was about and something about the hapsburgs or i dont know. It didnt end well. Then he said, what did you think . Not a good book. He said, can you hold it up . I held it up. Its easy to devolve into joking. Willie, what the hell was he saying . Is he okay . Willie, he sounded just like he was doing a Book Report in middle school and had not read the book. He has no idea what hes talking about. Hes rambling incoherently. By The Way, ive just got to say too because its a pet peeve, the man who promised to pay down the Debt And Balance the budget in 2016 raised it more than any president in the history of this republic. Now hes going, oh, because of my high tariffs, because of my high taxes on Working Class Americans, my high taxes on middle class americans, well balance the budget quickly and well make so much money i dont have to talk about Child Care. Yeah, thats the one where you go, you know what, i didnt read the book. May i present on monday . Can i have The Weekend because this is going to be embarrassing . One of the core arguments about Kamala Harris that you hear on certain Cable News channels and websites is that shes always in the middle of a Word Salad. Do you ever watch Donald Trump . Did you watch him yesterday . Had absolutely no clue what he was talking about and brought it in for that landing. By The Way tariffs, how hes going to pay for everything including Child Care, are a tax on consumers in this country. Conservatives tell you that too. They hate the idea. Hes talking about growing an economy. We have to finally have growth. Goldman sachs said if Donald Trump becomes president the economy will not grow. Thats Goldman Sachs. Thats not me, thats not us. Those socialists over at Goldman Sachs say the economy would be stronger under Kamala Harris. He doesnt have any idea what hes talking about when it comes to policy. You wonder at what point even yesterday we saw online conservatives and some republicans rolling their eyes saying, what is he talking about here . If you push even a little bit on policy, you find out hes an hd. He just doesnt know. Gene robinson, as willie said, trumpers talk about Word Salad as it pertains to Kamala Harris. There is no comparison. Donald trump, not only that answer and in most ralrallies, s about three feet deep in Lettuce And Ranch dressing. To a more important point hes never understood lets go through it. Hes never understood american history. Hes never understood the constitution. Hes never understood our founding documents. Hes never understood policy and never apologized for not understanding policy. Its one of the reasons why when people say, i support Donald Trump. Why . I dont like him as a man at all. Hes a terrible Human Being, but i like his policies. His policies, really . There were have few policies. It was 99 gesture 1 policy. Absolutely. War and peace is about war and about peace. Peace is better than war. War is more exciting. You know, i it was absolutely absurd. You listen to that and he clearly has no idea what hes talking about. This idea about tariffs that he has, which is wrong 100 or as Donald Trump would say 110 of economists will tell you hes totally wrong about tariffs. Its not a tax on foreign companies. Its a tax on american consumers. Its a regressive tax. Its a horrible tax that affects Low Income and Working Class Americans more than it does more affluent americans. This was at the economic club of New York. I mean, how did those people who were listening to him not just Gag Or Laugh or how did they keep a straight face listening to that ridiculous nonsense . I have no idea. I was wondering the same thing when that woman he kept looking at the woman who asked the question. I wanted to zoom in on her face. If i was the mother of young children, i wouldnt be reassured by those Child Care policy. Maybe j. D. Vances policy of having aunts and uncles and grandparents looking after your children, that seems to be the closest there is to a Child Care policy. Charlie sykes, one of the reasons you hear from business people saying, well, i dont like Donald Trump, but there are the policy issues. On the Child Care front there arent many policy issues. Many dont like the idea of tariffs. Doesnt it come down to the idea that Donald Trump has proposed to cut corporate Tax Rates to 15 and people are prepared to hold their noses on everything else because of that 15 Tax Cut . Well, its that and its also Donald Trumps position on regulation. Look, Donald Trump has essentially told the business class, if i become president , im going to do whatever you want me to do. Ill get you whatever subsidies you want. Ill eliminate regulations you find to be pesky. Ill not raise taxes. This is very transactional from their point of view. The question, of course, is whether or not at some point theyre sitting in that room and watching them applaud that bizarre Word Salad whether it occurs to them that, you know, this man is not good for the nation. This man is not actually good for economic stability. What we most want is a stable economy we can predict. We dont want an international trade war. For many of them its, yeah, this guy is going to do what i want. By The Way, Elon Musk is saying, yeah, Donald Trump is going to put me in charge of all kinds of things involving Government And Government regulation. What could possibly go wrong there . If you think the Word Salad is troubling, wait until you see the kind of people that Donald Trump brings in to a second administration. Thats going to be quite something. Coming up, well talk to the Democrat Challenges Ted Cruz in texas and making things interesting there. We want to turn to new developments surrounding wednesdays deadly shoot in georgia. Authorities have arrested the father of the 14yearold suspect. Colin gray was taken into custody yesterday. He faces charges of second Degree Murder, involuntary Manslaughter And Cruelty to children. Police didnt offer many details other than to say grays charges are directly connected to the actions of his sOn And allowing him to possess a weapon. Two Law Enforcement sources tell Nbc News Gray bought his son an Ar15 Rifle as a Christmas Gift last year. They dont know when it was given to him. Sources Say It was after police interviewed the teen last year about those online threats. The teen denied making those threats and no arrest was made. Grays son is accused of shooting and killing four people at apalachee High School wednesday. He faces four counts of Felony Murder and is set to appear in court later this morning. Two Law Enforcement officials say they discovered interest from the suspect on mass shootings. Mika, we sat here yesterday and wondered how a 14yearold got his hands on the guns. The father said previously when the fbi visited the family he has Hunting Weapons in his home, but theyre locked up and his son doesnt have access to him. My gosh, after the threats were made, allegedly, he bought he son, 13 or 14 years old, at christmas time an Ar15 Style Rifle for christmas last year. Im it is beyond shocking and kady kay were starting to see this and obviously in this case what i say were starting to see is the arresting of parents. Its about time. You have a 14yearold Child who is obviously has great mental challenges. The cops are calling him evil. His aunts are other relatives say this is a boy who was let down by his parents from the very beginning. And somehow the father buys this boy an Arstyle Weapon after he tells police hes going to keep guns out of his possession because of the threats they have been warned of. Its very clear. I mean, its very clear he should go to jail. Yeah, the time table of this and the fact we know the police visited the home, spoke to the father, spoke to the boy and the father gave the Son Access to this Ar15 And Access presumably to other weapons in the home as well, even though he said he didnt have access to them, gives a clear timeline. Maybe this is the Direction America is going to go to try to cut down on the number of children that society seems to be happy with being killed in schools. Theres a certain fatalism about trying to do anything else. You hear it again and again from members of congress and members of the republican party and members of the Lobby Groups that want to keep handguns in the hands of people. For a country thats so committed to trying to break barriers and introduce new technologies and do the impossible when it comes to this particular issue, there is, well, we wish we could, but thats life. Thats the latest line. Its just a fact of life. Maybe this is the only way the courts are going to manage to get around an extraordinary political apathy when it comes to gun shootings. It is a fear. It is fear from republicans and, if anybody believes that Gun Safety laws or Gun Control has always just been practiced fought by the right, you know, in the 60s it was fought by The Left. These things shift Back And Forth. The republicans need to shift back towards a sane, a rational gun policy position. If they did, Charlie Sykes, they wouldnt lose a lot of republican voters. An overwhelming majority of republicans support universal Background Checks. An overwhelming number of republicans support Red Flag Laws. An overwhelming number of republicans support raising the age to 21 for people going in and buying Ar15 Style weapons. An overwhelming majority of americans, im sure, would support enhanced Background Checks, more complete Background Checks for people under the age of 30 going out to buy ar15s. We look and there is a line, a line that goes straight through so many of these shootings. One after another after another, a disturbed young man, usually a disturbed young white man, buys an ar15 and goes and shoots up schools, our movie theaters, our Baptist Churches in texas. You can go down the list. Sometimes its older disturbed people who slaughter those attending a country festival, Music Festival, in vegas. Again, enough is enough. I go to you because i know you grew up around hunters in wisconsin. I grew up around hunters in mississippi, alabama, georgia, northwest florida. They want this sort of Gun Safety law and theyre conservative republicans. This is american carnage. Donald trump is running on Make America safe again. If youre an american parent, this is your great fear. This is the great american nightmare. Joe, The Point you were making is incredibly important because i think there is a real disconnect between what republican politicians think they have to do because theyre afraid of the nra and what actual Gun Owners feel about all this. You are absolutely right that Gun Safety is not a left wing idea. Its not a partisan issue. People want especially hunters understand how central it is to treat guns in a safe and responsible manner. You know, what this is going to take at some point is for republicans to stand up, turn around to the Gun Lobby and say, you know what, im in favor of Second Amendment rights, but were not going this way. We are, in fact, going to go through some of the policies you just mentioned. Were not going to turn a blind eye to this. Were not going to regard this shooting of children at school as a fact of life, as j. D. Vance said yesterday. I have to say that one of the incidents that really broke me on all this was the massacre of the children at sandy hook. After that, if that was not enough to sober up the country, if that was not enough to turn things around, what will it take . Coming up well stay on the topic of guns in america and what exactly j. D. Vance said yesterday about school safety. That moment is straight ahead on Morning Joe. Hi, my name is damian clark. The states with strict Gun Laws, they have a lot of shootings. Clearly strict Gun Laws is not going to solve this problem. What is going to solve this problem i really believe this. I dont like this. I dont like to admit this. I dont like this is a fact of life. If youre a psycho, you realize our schools are soft targets. We have to bolster security in our schools so the person who walks through the front Door Weve got to bolster security so if a psycho wants to walk through a front door and kill a bunch of children theyre not able to. There were School Resource officers in the georgia High School. In apalachee High School they confronted the shooter and there were precautions taken at this High School Senator Vance is talking about. Hes right this is a fact of life. His full comment was i dont like this is a fact of life. We dont have to like the reality we live in, but its the reality we live in. You think that would prompt him to say lets sit down and change this reality and do something about it. Having the School Resource officers there who acted heroically the other day, it wasnt enough to save the four people who did die. That is that comment he made right there is another very, very stark example of the difference between these two campaigns. Harris Walz Versus Trump vance, they see it as a fact of life and Kamala Harris immediately said after the shooting, this is a choice were making. We have to make a different choice. People dont want this to be a fact of life. No. Mothers dont want to fear sending their children to school, wondering whether theyll see them when they come home. Children dont want to go to school terrified by it. Charlie sykes, it doesnt have to be a fact of life. As Donald Trump said in iowa, we have to get just over it and Move On. Well, its a fact of life because republican legislators, mainly republican legislators in washington, d. C. And in state legislators Wont Support Common Sense basic Gun Safety legislation that the overwhelming majority of americans support. That is why this is a fact of life brought to you by the republican party. It just is. The guns are in the hands repeatedly of these children, of these mentally deranged people. Why . Because any type of Gun Safety legislation in georgia were talking about locking your guns up in your homes, Safe Storage, Red Flag Laws, things that would have helped here. Republicans say no, no, no. Well, to j. D. Vances point about schools being soft targets, look, our children are always soft targets. Children everywhere are soft targets. America is a soft target. You know, his solution that we need to just see it as a fact of life, you know, obviously is in denial. To your point about the legislation, if brian Kemp Tomorrow held a Press Conference and said im so shocked and horrified by the murder of these children, im going to support Safe Storage legislation. I am going to support Red Flag Laws. I am going to support these Common Sense Gun Legislation. You know what, joe, they would pass. They would pass in georgia and he would not lose any political support because at some point you have to realize that this is a point you made earlier. I Cant Stress this enough. Gun owners are concerned about the Second Amendment, but they dont oppose Common Sense legislation. They would not be a huge blowback. This is a gut check. If Brian Kemp stood up and said, lets fix this, you know what, he would not pay a significant political price for it. The question is why not . Coming up, can republicans pivot their way out of some deeply unpopular positions . Our next guest says theyre looking for a rebrand. Molly price from vanity fair joins us when Morning Joe comes back. When Morning Joe comes back of the other stories making headlines this morning. The chinese government is no longer allowing most foreign adoptions according to the associated press. U. S. Families have adopted over 80,000 children from china. Beijings announcement comes amid falling birth rates in china. The ban raises complicated questions for hundreds of families in the u. S. In the process of adopting. We talked about it before. Lets underline it right here. Theres a massive demographic crisis going on in china. In 1979 they began their onechild policy to bring down the population. It has gone too far and now, again, theyre dealing with a demographic Time Bomb thats starting to go off. Yeah. Now to this big drop in the number of teenagers who use ecigarettes. Vaping among middle and High School students is at its lowest level in a decade according to data from the cdc and fda. The drop comes as the government continues to crack down on retailers and suppliers who target teens. And winning ticket could earn someone around 740 Million in tonights megA Millions lottery. Its one of the biggest jackpots in The Games history. The prize has been growing since early june with no big winner after dozens of drawings. The Lump Sum Payment after taxes is estimated at around 366 million. Which is how much . If im not mistaken, thats how much barnacle makes. Theres a salary right there, one week. I want to go to willie quickly. Its amazing that i dont get the lottery. You dont understand the lottery . No. Its gambling. Did you ever get tickets . I did this summer. My daughter made me by some. How did it go . I broken. Thats better than most. You never know. You never know you could risk Money And Break even. I dont think its right. All the gamble commercials, man, its extraordinary all the Gambling Commercials theyre putting in front of young guys and young women. Its so dangerous. Thats not what this Side Rant is going to be about, willie. Vaping is down over the last, you know, several years among middle schoolers and teenagers. How incredible. The federal government didnt want to step in. Donald trump didnt want to step in because he was told by his people that his voters supported vaping. Lawsuits were taken by families against these companies that were targeting their children and they paid a huge, massive price for it. Look what happened. I mean, over time they finally were forced to stop marketing to middle schoolers and to teenagers. You know, the same thing goes with guns. You look at guns and legislators wont Pass Gun laws but there have been Class Action lawsuits in connecticut. Were seeing criminal charges against parents that wont lock up their guns and keep them safe and keep people in the Community Safe when they have a troubled Son Or Daughter in their house. So we actually have to turn to the courts who do provide justice when our Politicians Wont provide Common Sense. Yeah, you know, its interesting thinking about smoking, how prevalent it was when we were growing up and you go up and everyone was smoking on the street corners and bars and public places. American decided we didnt have to go on like that. Too many people were dying of Lung Cancer and how thats been marginalized to some effect. Then into that void Stepped Vaping which is just a sanitize version of smoking. As you said, marketed directly to kids with Bubble Gum and Cotton Candy flavors and all the Packaging And Everything else and was epidemic and continues to be in many places. The courts, the government and a lot of parents got together and said, were not going down this road. We have to stop this. Too many kids are becoming addicted and hurt by it and they were able to do something, which gets to the larger point youre making. When america decides something is bad for us, and particularly bad for our kids, like were seeing in our schools this week, we can do something about it. We can have the will to change something thats hurting young people in this country. Yet another conversation. Coming up, the Chiefs Kick off their Nfl Season with a win over the ravens. And well talk about predictions for the rest of the season. Morning joe will be right back. Be right back Donald Trumps back, and hes out for control. I would have every right to go after them. Complete control. I will wield that power very aggressively. And he has a plan to get it. Detailed plans for exactly what our movement will do. Its called project 2025, a 922page Blueprint to make Donald Trump the most powerful president ever overhauling the department of justice, giving trump the unchecked power to seek vengeance, eliminating the department of education, and defunding k through 12 schools, requiring the government to monitor womens pregnancies, and severe cuts to medicare and social security. Donald trump may try to deny it, but those are Donald Trumps plans. Well revenge does take time. I will say that sometimes revenge can be justified. Hell take control. Well pay the price. Im Kamala Harris, and i approved this message. We planned well for retirement, but i wish we had more cash. You think those two have any idea . That they can sell their Life Insurance Policy for cash . So theyre basically sitting on a goldmine . I dont think they have a clue. Thats crazy well, not everyone knows coventrys helped thousands of people sell their policies for cash. Even term policies. I cant believe theyre just sitting up there sitting on all this cash. If you own a Life Insurance Policy of 100,000 or more, you can sell all or part of it to coventry. Even a term policy. For cash, or a combination of cash and coverage, with no future premiums. Someone needs to tell them, that theyre sitting on a goldmine, and you have no idea hey, guys youre sitting on a goldmine come on, guys do you hear that . I dont hear anything anymore. Find out if youre sitting on a goldmine. Call coventry direct today at the number on your screen, or visit coventrydirect. Com. Game one of season 105 of the nfl down to one play, five seconds to go. Lamar trying to make magic happen. To The End zone. Is he down . Yes, touchdown. The Runners Toe hit Out Of Bounds. Its an incomplete pass. The games over. Kansas city has won. Wow. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the baltimore ravens. He said A Toe, it was really A Toenail. The ravens last second touchdown on the last play of regulation was waved off. Initially called a touchdown. The Video Review shows the wide receiver, yeah, his toe was just in the white there giving the chiefs a 2720 win. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 291 and a touchdown. This one to rookie astonishingl. He ran a 4. 2 at the combine. The jets won the Afc Championship game, but also beating the ravens for the sixth time. Meanwhile, the nhl hosts its very first game in south america tonight. The Green Bay Packers take on the eagles in sao paulo brazil. Its the first Opening Day on a friday. Live coverage is available exclusively on peacock. Joining us now, veteran Sports Columnist Mike Lupika and pablo tore. Pablo, we had everything last night, a great game, a rematch of the Afc Championship, maybe the two best teams in the afc who may meet again in the playoffs. Taylor swift was in the crowd. What else could you ask for on Opening Night . Everybody gathering only to realize i think the chiefs are going to get away with it again. The chiefs are on the brink and i say the brink after the first game, because thats how confident i am in them of being the first team to be a threepeat of back to back to back to back. Come on. Lemire is sitting next to me, a patriots fan. Hes like, why do people not hate the chiefs like they hate my team . I will defend this total insecurity by pointing out this is a team that is by itself. Theyre better this year and they have a cosmic toenail deciding game one. You tell me how good you feel betting against that team. Well, i tell you, i dont feel great betting against them because they had a horrible game last year. They were absolutely mediocre because all the defenses knew it was mahomes to travis kelce. You look last night, and i will say even though hes got himself lathered up, already in mid season form, pablo does thats right. This is such a dangerous offense. You know, last year it was the defense that kept them in until mahomes could do his magic in the playoffs. Last night you had rice repeatedly downfield, kelce, extraordinary, and of course, taytay up in the box. This is a team with so many weapons. It has to scare only defenses. Man, the difference between the start of this year and last year for the chiefs on the offensive side of the ball, pretty extraordinary. When you look at Patrick Mahomes, joe, at his best, hes the best player ive ever seen. I know brady is the g. O. A. T. , seven Super Bowls into his 40s, all that stuff. But when this young man is at his best, hes because of the element of running to go with throwing, hes the best ive ever seen. I was thinking last night, whens the nfl going to catch a break . Taylor is in the stands. You have the reigning mvp and lamar. Then The Ending, Kevin Durant lost one time because his toe was across. The chiefs have become the single most glamorous team we have in american sports, and mahomes is the biggest star. Coming up, the Jobs Report is being called one of the most important pieces of data in years and could mark a Turning Point for the american and she. Oo this is a good book title. When interest rates are really high, the economy slows, businesses start to slow, but theyre not falling off a cliff. Definitely theyre slightly below what was expected. But, remember, two weeks from now the fed is going to meet. And at this point, its sort of universally accepted, believed theyre going to cut rates. The question is how much . Well soon find out. The thing i think is noticeable is Wage Growth. Wage growth continues to outpace inflation. But heres the problem, mika. Even if you have more money in your pocket, when you go to a deli and your sandwich costs 15 or groceries are still expensive, it angers you. We have this positive Wage Growth number, but it doesnt help in terms of sentiment in this country. What can we glean in terms of the overall health of the economy . How should americans feel about how things are going . Good. The economy is strong, the economy is very strong. There are jobs out there to be had. As i just mentioned, wages are very good. Were not in bad shape. Look what we heard from Goldman Sachs this week. If we were to get a Donald Trump presidency, they believe gdp will be significantly worth. We heard from a whole swath of ceos this morning that theyre endorsing Kamala Harris because theyre looking for stability. I havent even mentioned President Trumps speech last night or remarks that can generously be described as a nonsensible Word Salad. Not the weave, molly, to be sure. The economy was supposed to be trumps probably top argument for election this november. And we have seen the metrics have been strong. The biden White House has had trouble communicating that to the american people. Polls suggest that the Vice President is not being tethered to that. Shes doing a little bit of a better job. The debates on tuesday, how should she talk about the economy then . I think this is a really important point that you just brought up. I want to go back to this tariffs idea. So they went to him during this talk, the economic club of New York, and they asked him how he would make Child Care more affordable, and he brought up tariffs. It makes absolutely no sense. The thing thats galling is, people think Donald Trump, the economy was going to be his strong suit. It is a strong suit for a certain group of people, if you run a giant organization. Hes saying were going to continue to cut the Tax Rate for corporations, and if youre someone whos super rich, you dont have to worry that hes going to look to level the Playing Field when it comes to taxes. He said yesterday hes going to pay for Child Care by tariffs. Blanket tariffs are going to do one thing. Theyre going to raise prices for consumers. The tariff experiment put american farmers in peril so much so that we needed to put forth an enormous amount of aid for those formers. The extraordinary thing about yesterday is that was not a room of lowinformation voters who dont any better. That was a room of people who are highly educated when it comes to financial literacy. The fact they didnt walk out and even applauded tells you one thing. They want their taxes lowered and they want Lena Kahn gone. Economists almost to a person say tariffs would not in any Way Shape or form help the american economy like he claims. When Donald Trump does the weave, when has it made sense . To your point, Jonathan Lemire, it never makes sense when hes, quote, weaving, a word he made up. Lets bring in john heilemann. He is a partner and chief political columnist at puck. I dont see a lot about his unbelievable unbelievably nonsensical comments at the economic forum. Maybe its deep in the article. Im just confused about the coverage. Well, mika, im often confused about the coverage. Im over here doing the weave myself. Yeah. I think what stephanie just said is the truist thing. I think theres a its pretty clear how the Business Community is going to line up around this election, which is to say that the business leaders who have decided that the rule of Law And Stability in the country is in the best interest of the economy in the longterm are preparing to line up and have already lined up to some extent behind Kamala Harris. There are other segments of the Business Community who are primarily focused on their personal Bottom Line or their companys Bottom Line. Very strongly where trump is connecting with those leaders is not just on the ftc, the fcc. If you look at project 2025 and trumps views, theres no place he has more dramatic proposals than trying to scale back the regulatory state. You have a split corporate community, and trump continues to try to tie the negative perceptions around Joe Bidens economy to Kamala Harris, and there are still questions about how much that is going to stick over the course of the next eight weeks. All right. Sorry about that, joe. So stephanie ruhle, im just curious about a position for Elon Musk that trump was proposing, among other things. Ive read the article. I dont see anything about the Child Care comments. Its all very curious. Its like a tree falls in the forest and i guess no one hears it. Is Donald Trump saying something ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous that proves him to be completely unfit and they i dont know. They dont see it. Well get to the Elon Musk in one second. Whats stunning is this, mika. If Donald Trump was inarticulate yesterday when he was explaining the Child Care policy when he had to answer about the deficit and the comments politicians make about the economy, he didnt utter a single coherent sentence. There werent even verbs in the sentence. It was marco rubio, my daughter ivanka, Child Care is Child Care. Day one, i want to see every single one of Kamala Harris policies. There is an absolute double standard in The Way these two individuals are being covered. Remember how Joe Biden performed at the debate. It was a disaster. We talked about it day in and day out. Where is the media talking about what Donald Trump presented . If under that Word Salad there was policy, bring it on, lets talk about it. I would love to do so. Donald trump is invited to come on, and lets discuss it, but there isnt a policy to discuss. Anybody whos passing it off is just really saying, i just want those Tax Cuts. If any ceos, especially publicly traded companies who think the economy has been a disaster, that is bologna. Its been extraordinary. Thank you. Well put. On the New York times, nothing on the front page there also, but i guarantee you if Kamala Harris had performed that way, i guarantee you theyd say experts question her fitness. Joe biden, again it is weve been talking about it for quite some time. It is a double standard mainstream media is pushing out there and other people are pushing out there, because they just, they hold him to such a lower standard. And then they have then they have the nerve, again, with Joe Biden to have a Syntax Blog and with Kamala Harris talking about Word Salad, again, how would you even say that . How could you even write that when youve seen whats happened over the past nine years . Lets bring in the coanchor of cnbcs squawk box, andrew Ross Sorkin. The numbers, is it like goldilocks, is it too hot, too cold . What does Jay Powell think . I think its just about right. The numbers are not great. I dont want to Sugar Coat them, but they are what was expected. In truth, this is what the federal reserve has been trying to do with the economy in terms of cooling things down. Of course, they dont want it to get too cool. One of the surprises this morning were some of the revisions of the previous numbers we heard about earlier this summer, 86,000 jobs not there, that we thought were there, which of course, is going to raise some questions about Todays Number, you know, is Todays Number accurate. So i think thats going to be the big question when it comes to what Jay Powell may have to do later this month when it to rates. The question now is it a 25 Basis Rate Cut or a 50point Basis Rate Cut . At the moment its both. I think hes going for a 25 Basis Point Rate cut. But maybe just rip the bandaid and go with 50 basis points and get it over with. As we keep talking about, though, this will enter the political sphere no matter what he does, because theres going to be an argument hes trying to, quote, unquote, juice the economy. I would argue though this has been telegraphed from the very beginning, weve been having the same conversation for the last three months, in part because this is what he suggested would be happening. Id say so far hes been pretty right. I want to ask really quickly about tariffs. Donald Trump Yesterday all we talked about was tariffs. Obviously the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page continues to express concerns about how much that will damage the economy, how much it will damage trade, how much it will damage the gdp, how much it will hurt Working Class Americans, how much it will hurt middle class americans, you have Donald Trump lying again saying he was going to balance the budget quickly. This is a guy who said he was going to balance the budget and pay down the national debt when he first ran in 2016. And he did the opposite. You saw what happened. Again, this guy, largest deficits ever, largest federal debt ever, largest budgets ever when he was in office. Look, i mean, when you have Goldman Sachs not historically considered a great bastian of liberal politics writing research reports saying that the economy will be better under Vice President harris, if she becomes the president , then Donald Trump, i think youve got to take notice of whats being said here, folks. There are people at the top of the Business World and community with the exceptions maybe of Elon Musk and some of these other names weve talked about who are looking at whats happening here and some of the policies that former President Trump has put forward, many of which, by The Way, have lots of holes in them. I know we talk about the fact that we dont know everything about Vice President Harris Policies yet and there are holes there, and that is true, but there are holes and demonstrable holes in the policies weve heard about from former President Trump. And clearly i think tariffs are a huge not just question mark, but whole in terms of how it would work. Would they really come forward and what kind of true tax would that be on the american public and american citizens. So i was listening to john heilemann. I was listening to stephanie. I think they are 100 right in their analysis this morning in terms of how the Business Community is looking at this and this remarkable double standard thats been put forth. Its in evidence in the past 24 hours in terms of how weve been discussing these issues. In terms of holes and question marks, go back to the Elon Musk idea. Theres a lot of people in this country when Donald Trump says were going to put together an audit group, an audit czar, because the government spends way too much money, millions of americans would say right on, lets audit it. But Elon Musk Elon Musk who has shown absolutely no discipline. Look at what hes regularly posting on twitter, Misinformation And Conspiracy theories. But just that general headline of hes one of the most successful businessmen in the world, hed be perfect for audit. What does Audit Need . Actual details, something weve never gotten from Elon Musk. Its just this idea. I dont want an official job, im not looking to be paid, lets be clear. If Donald Trump were to win the presidency, Elon Musk doesnt need a Cabinet Position because he would have the opportunity to be a Shadow President behind the scenes where he gets absolutely no Critique Or Criticism or vetting, but could get whatever the heck he wants. The future of Artificial Intelligence on the table ahead of us during the next administration, it is serious who is going to be in the president s ear, no matter whos in the oval office. Yeah. He wouldnt have any oversight either. We should note weve had a lot of conversations this week, joe and mika, about the double standards, also about the Media Criticism and how the press what covering this campaign. A few people on The Left online have started to use the phrase sane washing where media outlets sort of try to normalize what trump said. The Speech Yesterday is the best example. They might use the words rambling or not everything made sense, but they largely put it in a normal frame. When you read the transcript, its none of those things. Thats a challenge for us all here in these next two months and certainly in the debate tuesday night. Just cover the facts. Thats what were doing here, but not everyone does. How hard is it to analyze a speech or a talk or an answer to a question by former President Trump to a group of expert journalists, i mean, very serious people, how hard is it to look at what hes said and say, that doesnt make sense, it appears he may have some sort of problem with his putting together of words, or worse, he has no answer and hes trying to cover up for that. There were so many different ways you could distill what happened yesterday, none of which im seeing in major mainstream ill put quotes around that Newspaper Coverage of this event. I mean, that was the lead, that he has no answer, no policy and seemed a little bit unfit. A little bit. But, again thats thats this is who hes been for nine years. Again, i always go back to his first Editorial Board Interview with the Washington Post where they asked him politician questions and instead he talked about his hands and the size of his hands. Right. That was nine years ago. But what im saying is, even then it was obvious he doesnt know policy. Weve always said he doesnt know policy. And yesterday the meandering around, of course he doesnt know Child Care policy. But if youre a conservative, if you work on Wall Street, if you understand how economics works, if you understand the free market, you should be horrified by the fact that he was rambling around and bumbling around, talking almost exclusively about tariffs, talking almost exclusively about rigging the system, talking about getting in The Way of the free market. And this is one of the things that ive just not understood, and weve said it here. We all talk about saving democracy and how democracy is threatened by a man who said he was going to terminate the constitution, a man who said he was going to be a dictator on day one, a man who said he was going to kill his political enemies with Seal Team six or if he chose to kill his enemies with Seal Team six and count be arrested while he was President Of The United States. Were talking about a man who said he was going to have military tribunals for his critics, people like liz cheney. I could keep going down the list. So, yeah, the threats to democracy are real. But the threats to the free market, the threats to free enterprise, to our economy, i mean, andrew Ross Sorkin, obvious this is a guy who, as we have said, whos talking about being an autocrat and not just talking about going after political enemies but going after people, ceos that dont agree with his policies, a guy thats talking about moving all the power in, moving the power of the fed into his hands, moving the power of the fec into his hand fcc, moving the power of what tv americas are off the air, deciding who goes to jail he said it and who doesnt go to jail. Really i would think any fortune 500 ceo would think i cannot deal with all the question marks that would be hanging over this guy over the next four years. You are very correct, but i want to actually and i think what you just said speaks, though, to the answer you were even raising about the double standard issue, about some of the things we saw him say yesterday that seemed incoherent, and yet the coverage didnt seem to reflect that in many ways. I dont know if you remember, i came on your broadcast this was maybe two or three months ago after this Business Roundtable Meeting he had with a bunch of ceos and i said there were questions about whether he was meandering or incoherent at the time. I think it sort of went viral and was a little crazy at the time. The number of ceos who were at the meeting who originally said to me he was meandering and incoherent, not that they changed their mind, and this goes to the Bullying Piece of it and the autocratic piece of it, i started to get calls from people saying, oh my goodness, andrew, you dont understand, he wasnt incoherent. They saw it, but they were being told they didnt see it, and they were being told youve got to get the message out. And i think theres an argument to be made that the republicans in the Trump Machine have become very good at trying to bully people into submission to some degree to believe something they dont even believe because theyre seeing it with their lying eyes and theyre unwilling to recognize whats in front of them. And of course, perfect example of that, go back and look at the tape yesterday, mika. You actually had people and i would be so embarrassed if i were them. You actually had people at The End of that clip applauding his Word Salad answer. I think those were people trying to get him to shut up. Maybe they loved it. Who knows . I think people have been bullied into it, and theyre just reflexively supporting him despite the Fact Everything hes talking about is going to destroy the economy. You look again, you look at Goldman Sachs. Goldman sachs is not in the business of picking sides politically. Goldman sachs is in the business of making money. Thats it. Making money. Goldman sachs is issuing the warning about Donald Trump. You have the top economists in the world issuing the warnings about Donald Trump. This is pretty easy. Vice president Kamala Harris has secured the support of over 80 corporate leaders in her bid for the presidency. In a new letter shared with cnbc, 88 current and former top executives from across the united states have endorsed harris for president , including former 21st Century Fox Ceo and one of the heirs to the Murdoch Family Media Empire james murdoch. The executives argue that if harris wins in november, the Business Community can be confident they will have a president who wants american industries to thrive. Stephanie, you brought this up earlier. Again, if that had been Kamala Harris on that stage yesterday, the headlines across the board would be harris horrifies at economic forum. But it wasnt her on stage. It was Donald Trump. So he gets the sane washing. What do you make of this letter by the ceos . Will it make a difference. It will make a difference. What theyre basically saying is were looking for stability. For anyone out there saying Kamala Harris is far more progressive than Joe Biden, shes not. Look at the numbers she just put out this week about longterm capital gains tax. What Kamala Harris is guilty of is being a black woman. For someone whos not actually paying attention to economic policy, theyre saying she must be more progressive. Shes not. And to the Business Community saying were aokay with trump, i would love to sit down with them. I would love to know who was in that room yesterday. Were hearing names like the ceo of cantor fitzgerald, selfmade billionaire, extraordinarily successful person. Id love to know what policies is howard down with, or is it just, oh, were done with the wokeness, Lena Kahn, shes bad for business. This is the united states recreating itself with oligarchs. Oligarchs in russia know there are scores of people living in squalor, but it doesnt matter because they have an inside track to vladimir putin and theyre rich as rich can be. The ceos who backed Donald Trump, theyre not backing Donald Trump because of his broad policies that are going to lift the economy. Theyre backing Donald Trump because hes going to hook them up personally. I would refer to the meeting he had with oil executives three months ago where he said, you guys give me scores of money, ill give you whatever you want. Donald trump is not a policy person. Hes transactional. If you give to him, he will transact for you. Be aware of that, america. Sometimes he doesnt come through and he doesnt give a damn. Everything you just said, stephanie ruhle, thank you very much. We appreciate it. Well be watching the 11th hour at 11 00 p. M. Eastern right here on msnbc. Andrew Ross Sorkin, thank you as always for being on today. Coming up on Morning Joe, texas is home to one of the closestwatched senate races of this election cycle. The democrat nominee, Congressman Colin allred joins us next to discuss the state of that race as well as his recent trip to the southern border. Plus, iran has recently targeted the campaigns of both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in hopes of intensifying its efforts to discredit american democracy. Well have the latest on irans efforts to influence the u. S. Election. Thats next. Well be right back. Well be right back. Sandals Jamaica Sale is now on, visit sandals. Com or call 1800sandals Nothing prepared me for the news that a baby i desperately wanted would not survive. Because of Ted Cruzs Abortion Ban, i was forced to leave my state to get livesaving care. Ted cruz wanted me to wait until that baby died in my womb or died in my arms. I Cant Stay silent anymore. Colin allred will keep out of womens medical decisions. Colin allred knows a conversation between a woman and her doctor is sacred and private. Thats a new Campaign Ad in one of the mostwatched senate races in this election cycle. Democrats are hoping Congressman Colin allred can flip texas blue and send incumbent senator Ted Cruz packing in november. Allred is doubling down on reproductive rights in texas in the wake of the states neartotal Abortion Ban currently in effect. Two recent polls in texas show cruz leading allred by just two percentage points. Its close. And congressman allred joins us now. Thank you very much, congressman, for being on the show. Looking at that ad, i take it abortion is playing a big role in your Campaign Demand this election. What are you hearing on the Campaign Trail . Well, it is playing a big role, mika, because its a huge issue for us here in texas. Austin, who is in that ad, shes a dear friend of mine. Shes an obgyn. She grew up with me in dallas. This is a story thats playing out every single day here in our state. Ted cruz is singularity possible for this Abortion Ban. He put the judges on the district court, the supreme court who did this. He also backed often in primaries the state legislators. He wanted to go further and ban Ivf And Access to certain forms of birth control. So this is having horrific consequences here in texas. Its a huge political issue. Its also a deeply personal one. Hi, colin. Its molly jongfast. I wanted to ask you a question about sometimes in red states what we saw in kansas with Governor Brownback is that a red state pushed too far will sometimes revolt. Theres also a phenomenon where a red state just says its enough. Talk to me about what youre seeing on the ground as youre running for senate there. Yeah. As you know, molly, i say were a nonvoting state, and we have to change that. But it is true that texans are waking up to just how extreme the rhetoric of Ted Cruz is over the last 12 years now that its becoming law and policy. Its playing out in such a personal way for so many different texans. In many ways, the democratic national convention was about whats happening in texas. It was about womens reproductive rights being taken away. It was about we have to have a secure border and Ted Cruz is preventing us from doing that. We get a new senator who has a record of getting things done, who was raised by a single mom here, went to public schools and wants to serve our entire state instead of spending time pitting us against each other. Congressman, good morning. You briefly touched upon the border. Lets go a little deeper on that. Immigration, of course, a Signature Issue on this campaign. And you mentioned the dnc. That was a moment where in earnest where democrats, led by Vice President harris, said we have a bill, were ready to sign this bill, lets make this law. It was Donald Trump who told republicans to scuttle it. Is that resonating there in texas . Talk about the state of play at the border in terms of crossings and how people feel about it. My family is from brownsville texas. Thats the very tip of common. I was just in the valley. I can tell you folks are tired of Ted Cruz coming down and treating the valley like hes on a safari. You know what you do on a safari . You put on your outdoor clothing and see the sights and then you leave, because its not your responsibility. He comes down to south texas and points out problems and then he goes to d. C. And stops legislation that would have brought 20 Billion to border security. No state would have benefitted more from that than texas. For a texas senator, that should have been a top priority. We have to do one that will do that. Thats what ill do. We know he wont. All right. Democratic candidate for senate in texas, Congressman Colin allred, thank you very much for coming on the show today. Thank you, congressman. So, john heilemann, coming into the year we thought we knew the outlines of the senate races. Most of them are very tight. You look in the Swing States. A lot of them are tight, democrats overperforming and many republicans doing well in montana, but texas within the margin of error in two polls. And you look at other states, i mean, this is this is this is a senate race, a year of races that, once again, as was the case in 20 and 22, favor republicans. The question is, will republicans once again clutch defeat out of the jaws of victory . Well, Theyve Theyve obviously proven very good at doing that in the past, joe. You just captured, though, the essence of the Senate Situation correctly and accurately. Democrats have more than held their own. This is a very narrow needle that they have to thread to maintain control of the senate. They have they have to win kind of have to run the table and theyre defending a ton of tough seats. Yet theyre doing that in Arizona And Nevada and other places. The senate candidates in those places have been overperforming Joe Biden when he was at the top of the ticket. They, too, are benefitting from the surge of Enthusiasm And Momentum and money around Vice President harris. I think, you know, the reality here is that south dakota continues to be really tough. And John Tester has proven election after election to be someone who has overcome the odds and has been able to win in that state. In montana. Yeah. Im sorry, in montana. In montana, sorry about that. In montana, has proven his ability to win and to defy the odds. I never bet against John Tester, but that race looks very tough for him. It is the case that if they dont win that race, theyve got to find another state somewhere, an unlikely state somewhere. And though texas is a very tough state for democrats obviously, Colin Allred is a very strong candidate. As you say, there seems to be some daunting sense that maybe that race could end up being down to the wire and one that democrats could pull out. Yeah. Now to this. The New York times is providing a closer look at irans alleged attempts to influence u. S. Public opinion ahead of the november election. The times reports that irans efforts appear intended to undermine former president Donald Trumps campaign, but theyve also targeted the campaigns of both president Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as well. Reportedly involved in the efforts are front companies controlled by the iranian revolutionary guard corps, a powerful multiservice branch of irans armed forces. Thats according to an iranian official and another individual from the states media and Information Sector who spoke to the times. Joining us now senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for peace. He focuses on u. S. Policy toward the middle east and iran. What more can you tell us about whats happening here . This is a regime in iran whose official slogan is death to america. So theyre intent on trying to defeat the united states, defeat the u. S. Led world order. They realize they cant do that militarily. America is so much for powerful than iran. But The Way theyre trying to do that is by worsening our internal polarization. Cyber attacks, hacking, disinformation is a very low cost, but highimpact way of doing that. How would you compare their efforts with, say, russias . Iran is not a firsttier cyber power like russia, china, the united states and israel, but its very motivated. It doesnt require a great deal of sophistication to be impactful. Ill give you an example. In 2016, when russia hacked John Podestas emails, those attacks could have been carried out by a computer science student, just one individual. And iran learned from that. They hacked roger stones emails. They oftentimes prey on older individuals. Another example which theyve learned from russia in 2016. Russia would come and create social media groups, pitting us against one another. They would create black lives matter. They would create all lives matter. They would instigate fights and watch with popcorn. These are the things iran has learned from russia. And, joe, with artificial sites like chatgpt, they can create fake news stories which look like real sites. So kareem, obviously iran has stepped up its efforts, but its not like other countries have stopped. We had a wave of headlines this week about russias continued efforts, sometimes through social media figures, to sow disinformation. Russia, north korea, china and other bad actors doing the same. It seems like its an incredibly uphill climb. I do think this is going to be the new normal for us. We all have to be much more vigilant. I almost on a daily basis receive alerts from our Email Service that im getting phishing attempts from the iranian government. So all of us have to be much more vigilant. And, as you said, these four countries, china, russia, iran, north korea, theyre cooperating more than they ever have before. It will sound pollyannaish, but the greatest threat we face as a nation is not external, its internal. Its our own polarization, and our adversaries are seizing on it. Wow. Make no mistake about it, there are people internally that are either, either working directly or indirectly for russia, working directly or indirectly for china. We found that out this week. And theyre, theyre, theyre passing along that disinformation. And even if they arent working directly for them, there is an entire new slate of useful idiots, especially for russia, and its causing its causing chaos. Yeah. Some of them are running for office. Senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for internal Peace Kareem Sarge poor, thank you. Moments ago, there were two hearings held in georgia for the high School Shooting suspect and also his father. Colin gray is charged with involuntary manslaughter, second Degree Murder and cruelty to children. He faces up to 180 years in prison if he is convicted on all of those charges. His next hearing is set for december 4th. Two Law Enforcement sources tell Nbc News Gray bought his son an Ar15 Style Rifle as a gift. Its not exactly when it was given to him, but sources Say It was after police interviewed the teen and his father last year about online threats to carry out a School Shooting. A hearing for the suspected gunman was held a short time ago. Its actually a child. The 14yearold is facing four counts of Felony Murder. Authorities say he fired an Arstyle Rifle inside appalachee High School on wednesday, killing two students and two teachers. The teenager is now being charged as an adult and faces life in prison without parole. His next hearing is also set for december 4th. Joining us now, State Attorney for Palm Beach County, florida, dave aronberg. Dave, i think this is the second time a parent has been charged. Is this a new strategy in the war against these School Shootings . Mika, something has to be done. Youre not going to get it by just charging the child. When youre a child, your brain is still developing. The threat of life in prison means nothing. Plus, they rarely survive. They usually get killed or kill themselves. Its unusual that the kid here surrendered. The key to charging the father is he gave the kid the gun and did not secure it after knowing his son had mental health issues. Its a stronger case for prosecutors if you can show the father did indeed give the kid a gun after the fbi visited the house saying there was a report that the son wanted to shoot up a school. That would be reckless disregard of a known risk. There is precedent. In oxford, michigan, the crumy parents are charged with murder. You engage in Child Cruelty and it leads to a death, i dont know if thats an overcharge. We still havent seen the probable cause affidavit. You dont want to overcharge in a case like this because youre dealing with an unprecedented charge to begin with. We rarely hold parents accountable for their Childs Behavior in School Shooting, but we should do more of that. Hi. Its molly jongfast. There are a bunch of different charges. Can you sort of walk us through what that looks like and why its a group of three . Yeah. The most serious charge is the second Degree Murder charge, which is a maximum 30 years in prison, minimum of ten years. Thats for two counts. Thats for the two children who were killed. It doesnt apply to the two adults, the teachers. Then you have the voluntary manslaughter. Its extreme recklessness that leads to a death. Its not intentional. Then there are the Child Endangerment charges, which are a lesser crime. Hes facing a whole host of charges and rightly so. Here you have a father who instead of buying his Son Access to a therapist bought him an Arstyle Rifle. You would hope that the crumbably precedent would teach parents like this. Maybe this case will finally get it through these parents heads this is not how you raise a child. If your child shows serious mental health issues, you dont treat it by giving the kid a gun. The judge overseeing trumps Election Interference Case says that the 2024 Campaign Isnt relevant in deciding the timeline of the criminal proceedings. Attorneys for the former president and special Counsel Jack Smiths Team were in Court Yesterday for a hearing to determine how the case will proceed. Judge Tanya Chutkan declined to set a new trial date, but did set a Hearing Date for filings from both sides. Meanwhile, in New York, a judge is expected to announce today whether hell once again delay the Sentencing Hearing in Donald Trumps criminal hushmoney case. The former president was originally scheduled to be sentenced on july 11th, but Judge Merchan pushed that back to September 18th after trump asked to set aside the conviction after the supreme courts immunity ruling. In just minutes, Donald Trump is expected to join his lawyers in a new York City courtroom, fighting to overturn a 2023 verdict that found the former president liable for sexual abuse. The court is scheduled to hear arguments in Trumps Appeal of a jurys finding that he sexual assaulted the writer e. Jean carroll. Last year, a jury unanimously found trump liable for sexual abuse, ordering him to pay her 5 million. Trump has denied all he abused. Dave, lets get your thoughts here. On these two New York cases, do you see anything happening on e. Jean carroll. Will Judge Merchan Delay Sentencing until after the election . I hope he doesnt. Theres no need to do so. The supreme court said you got to deal with immunity before the trial begins. Trump is saying, you have to deal with these immunity issues. Let me appeal. These trials took place before the supreme court made this decision. Theres no reason to delay this longer. Its not like trump is going to jail. Hes going to appeal this. It wont affect his campaigning, so he should move ahead with it. As far as the e. Jean carroll case, trump is making an argument on appeal. Its the same argument that Harvey Weinstein made which said you admitted improper testimony of other women not subject to the case and that prejudiced the jury. Even though it worked in the Harvey Weinstein appeal, i dont think its going to work here because this was a civil trial, not a criminal trial. The standards of evidence are looser. Trump is going to appear himself for this one. Shows you how important he deems this. This is personal with e. Jean carroll. I dont think hes going to win on appeal. All right. One more for you dave. In a surprise move, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to all charges in the federal Tax Case against him. The plea came just hours after Jury Selection was supposed to begin in los angeles. The 54yearold was accused in a scheme to avoid paying at least 1. 4 million in taxes. The plea avoids a potentially embarrassing trial for the son of President Biden just months after his conviction in a separate Gun Case. Whats going on with the conviction in the Gun Case in terms of sentencing and what do you make of this guilty plea . Are you surprised . I was. As far as the Gun Case, hes facing up to 25 years there. As far as the plea yesterday, i was surprised, but not as surprised as the prosecutors in california. This is a stronger case in california and the prosecutors were ready to go to trial and then you have this Plea Deal. Hunter biden said he didnt want to put his family through further anguish and humiliation. I buy that. I think hes sincere, but i think he was motivated by his Fathers Decision not to run for election. President biden said that there would be no Pardon Or Commutation here and he faces 18 years in prison in the California Case in addition to the 25 years. He could change his mind on his way out of the White House. He knows that Hunter Biden would probably never have been prosecuted in these cases if his name were hunter smith. Never ever would have happened. No parallel. The Rank Hypocrisy which newspapers dont write about or others dont talk about. Trump is always talking and his people always talking about the double standard. The double standard is Donald Trump has been able to do things in court no other defendant would be able to do. Hunter biden a bigger double standard. And outside court too. Hunter biden, bigger double standard. Nobody in good faith believes he would have been charged for these things if his last name were not biden. In fact, they came up with a Plea Deal they had to take off the table because of political pressure. Had nothing to do with the law. It was all politics. State attorney for Palm Beach County florida, dave aaronburg, thank you for coming on the show. President biden has said he will not pardon or commute the sentence for his son, hunter. The white House Press Secretary told reporters that was still the president s position. Joining us now professor at the university of baltimore school of law kim whaley. Shes the author of Pardon Power. Can we start with why at this point, kim . The why traditionally all The Way back to prebiblical times is for mercy, is when people demonstrate they fell through the cracks and there was injustice. Back in england when there wasnt jury trials or appeals the king could pardon someone. I write about a 4yearold girl who pushed her brother by mistake into boiling water. Thats one reason. The other is amnesty, george washington, the whiskey rebellion, Jimmy Carter post vietnam. Theres no separation of the Pardon Powers for corrupt pardons to donors to cover up wrongdoing, to silence witnesses, the things weve seen. Given theres so much strain on democracy right now, its a dusty area of the law that doesnt get enough attentiOn And discussion. Kim, there was a lot of discussion as to whether or not the president had the ability to selfpardon. Trump opted not to do that. Were this to happen down the road, whether its a second Trump Term or a future president. What is your best read as to what the law says, can a president do that . The answer is its less about can he or is there a pushback or consequence. I also argue that the supreme courts immunity decision almost makes selfpardons redundant. The court basically said if you use the massive power of the office to commit crimes, theres no oversight or accountability. To answer your original question, you know, the selfpardon is antithet call to the obligation to make sure the flaws are faithfully executed. It undermines the idea you cant be a judge in your own case. With this majority on the supreme court who really doubled down on the Pardon Power in their immunity decision it would be unlikely they would say that the Pardon Power does not allow selfpardons because thats essentially in different words what they did with the immunity decision. Kim, hi, its molly jongfast. Can you answer a question here, this is more of an Opinion Question . Do you think that biden should pardon hunter . Well, should is a, you know, tough word. Legally if you look at the criteria for mercy pardons he could be eligible. Not only were these lowlevel offenses, the Gun Offense is usually an Add On to more serious charges. Under 2 of people within his Tax Bracket are investigated by the irs. Then, of course, theres this history of his Drug Abuse that was occasioned by his brothers death. All of that might not be fitting for this person, particularly given all the political pressure. Theres also history of pardoning family members. Bill clinton pardoned his brotherinlaw and Donald Trump pardoned jared Kushners Dad who was prosecuted by Chris Christie who said it was one of the most hideous criminal enterprises hes ever prosecuted. Weve seen this historically. I dont know if biden were, if Kamala Harris would be far off the criteria if they were to decide Hunter Bidens sentence should be commuted. The new book Pardon Power is on sale now. Kim whaley, great to have you on the show. Thank you very much for coming on today. Great to have you here. Its been so great to be here this week.
