President trump is just one week away. Apparently in her Debate Prep, harris is focusing on ways to rattle trump. Yep, she wants to rattle trump. Right now shes deciing whether to wear a jacket that says irs or fbi. Good Morning Welcome to Morning Joe its wednesday, september 4th, along with joe, willie, and me. Is It September already . What . It is. Its school time, its falls coming, summers over. Nothing to weep about. Just an election straight ahead. Yikes. Along with joe, willie, and me, we have the host of Way Too Early, Jonathan Lemire. Chief white House Correspondent for the New York times, peter baker, and New York times Opinion Columnist, David French joins us this morning. Good to have you all with us. Great to have everybody with us. Jonathan lemire, Mike Barnicle and i will certainly tell you that summer is likely over and as barnacle would say, time to put the shutters on the windows, the seasons over. The Red Sox desperately i mean, the royals who keep losing and the twins. They all want the Red Sox desperately to get into the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Red Sox will not go along with it. And they keep losing as well. I think even you guys would say, this has been a pleasant surprise in boston for most of the season. I think you projected a last place finish. You always do, but kind of tailing off at The End, you caught us at the top of the show coming out of jimmys bit, lamenting, though, the yankees bull pen. Thats what john and i were addressing. Our top story. Clay holmes at 11th, blown save in texas last night. Not good with the playoffs looming, john. Oh, i dont mind. No, i think its clear that the yankees who have had a terrific season, who but have a glaring weakness. There are few things that undermine a Teams Postseason chances than an unreliable closer. And the Yankees Cannot have any faith in Clay Holmes right now. He blew his 11th Save of the year, giving up this walk off Grand Slam to the texas Rangers Rookie, wyatt langford. It is a real Achilles Home for this team. They have slipped behind the orioles by a Half Game in the al east. But at least theyll be playing in october. Theyll be playing in october. We will not be, joe. I didnt mean for john to enjoy this quite so much. The way youre supposed to do this, and johns not used to the southern formatting. The yankees right now are getting themselves ready. Theyre resting, setting it up right before they go into the kick, theyll win the World Series. Thats what you have to do, jonathan. Lower expectations. Selfdeprecate. But going back to the Red Sox, because i know with all of these new polls out that are showing a dramatic shift in the race oh, we have a lot. People want to keep hearing about major League Baseball. I actually have the News Wil lost seven in a row, seven in a row. If the Red Sox had gone 500 over the last seven dpams, we would be like within a game, game and a half of the playoffs. Were four and a half back now, but again, they just dont want to win it. I will say it with 30 games left, four and a Half Games is not insurmountable. Anything can happen. There you go, jonathan . Did you see how good that is . How easy it is to be anxious. Jonathan, what do you think about the yankees chances . You have five seconds. Between now and november 1st, yankees are likely running the table. Theyre just too good. Theyre too good. Say that. And willie okay. Im going to be right there next to you cheering with you every step of The Way. Okay. Right . A bridge too far. Jonathan thats a little much, joe. Lets get to the news. We do have a new Poll Out this morning showing a close race for the White House across six Battleground States. The latest cnn Ssrs Poll find Vice President Kamala Harris with an advantage over former President Trump among likely voters in wisconsin, 5044 , as well as in michigan, where shes up 4833 . Harris is also up by one in both georgia and nevada, while the two are deadlocked in pennsylvania with 47 each. Trump, meanwhile, is in up in arizona, 4944 , interesting, we should note, that all of these races fall within the Polls Margin of error. How big are these margins of error. One race where harris is up by 47 points. And its within the margin of error. Is it five points . But shes up six point i thinK Six is outside. You know, willie, these polls again, all over the place. There are some polls that show were ahead in arizona, behind in michigan. The Bottom Line again is as i always said when i was in politics, since ive gotten out of politics, its not about the exact number, its about Trend Lines. And if you look at Trend Lines, things are looking very good right now, in early september, with a Long Way To Go, but things are looking very good over the past three weeks for Kamala Harris. Yeah, whoever the candidate was at the top of the democratic ticket, it was still going to be a close race. But i think what democrats are going is comparing this to the Parallel Universe in which Joe Biden stayed in the race. And he was trailing. And those Trend Lines you were talking about were headed in the wrong direction. Kamala harris has stepped in over the last month and reversed that. So, yes, shes outside of the margin of error in wisconsin, in thiS Poll. Shes right there in michigan, as well, pennsylvania, closer than they would like it to be. But weve always known these states were going to be that close. What shes done is flipped some of them, at least, momentum wise, and did some of these actual numbers in her direction. Theres also something were looking at closely here is where she sits On The Issues. Theres a Usa Today Suffolk University Poll in which Kamala Harris leads Donald Trump among likely voters 4843. But when it comes to the economy, 51 Favor Trump versus 45 for harris. In june, trump had a 14point Advantage over President Biden. Again, some growth there for her. On immigration, trump leads harris by just three points now, 5047. Thats within the margin of error. Thats down from trumps 13Point Lead over Joe Biden. On the question of national security, trump up 51 , 46 over arrest. Down from a Tenpoint Advantage, trump held over biden. We see the trend here. On the issue of Health Care, harris has a Doubledigit Lead, 5440 over trump. Thats up from a Tenpoint Advantage that Joe Biden held in june. Again, Trend Lines, not just in the Poll Wing overall, but on specific issues that democrats felt like they had to pull back and get closer to Donald Trump. No doubt, those margins have really shrunk. Thats very encouraging for democrats, the Harris Team, circulating numbers, similar to the internals. Theyre still down, but theyve closed the gaps and they think there is room to grow. Back to the Battleground States. Those Wisconsin And Michigan Numbers are so positive for Harris And Show real trends, but two states in particular that jump out. And this election might come down to those two states. Georgia and pennsylvania. Theres basically one point or tie. And wisconsin and michigan not enough for harris. She needs to get one of those two. And it is in her campaign, and democrats have privately been noting for a while that her numbers in Pennsylvania Lag behind where they are in wisconsin and michigan. And those three Blue Wall states. And thats why shes going to be camping out there this coming week, campaigning in the pittsburgh area, ahead of that first debate. President biden, which is there on her behalf, Hell Keep going there. Pennsylvania a huge, huge state for her, and if she Cant Win there, then she needs to offset that with georgia, where shes had real enthusiasm, but natural disadvantages there for a democrat. It is very, very, very close. You know, its so fascinating, peter baker. Its very easy to look at the cynicism thats displayed by politicians and become cynical yourself. And on the issue of immigration, where Donald Trump kills the toughest Border Security Bill in the last 30 years, and says, dont vote for it, blame it on me, you know, we dont want to give this issue to the democrats, its very easy to sit back and become cynical yourself. Im talking about myself, not you as a reporter, but to go, my gosh, you know what, theyre going to get away with this. This cynicism are people going to really be this done. You look at these polls, the answer is, no, theyre not. You look at a Threepoint Margin on immigration, when the first three years, as you know very well and reported on it, immigration have been a sore subject at the White House. The Southern Border At Times has been chaotic. You look at the numbers of illegal immigrants that have come over in the first three years. This was a huge issue to Joe Biden, and then they tried to push that bill through, and it was Donald Trump and republicans that killed the conservative Border Security Bill. And now you look, Kamala Harris has done exactly what politicians should do, turn weaknesses into strengths. She has run straight at this issue. And you see a Threepoint Margin. Im curious, are you surprised its only three points, or do you see all The Things that harris has done up to thiS Point, making that make more sense. Yeah, look, this is really fascinating, because youre right. If you watched trumps rallies, and i was looking through a bunch of them yesterday for something i was working on, it is striking how much immigration is the core of his message this year aside from the 2020 election. Everything comes back around to the border, to immigration, it is as if he was running a Oneissue Campaign at times. And if that Issue Isnt working for him, hes really going to have a hard time in the fall. And its really fascinating. The three biggest vulnerables for the Biden Harris Administration, domestically, have been immigration, inflation, and crime, all three of which at some point in their administration were pretty high. All three of which now are low, right . So, inflation is back to a much more normal state, immigration the illegal crossings are much reduced since President Biden took Executive Action after congress failed to pass that bipartisan bill you talked about. And crime is at the lowest, i think in many years, according to the latest statistics now. Prices havent come down, but the increases are not happening The Way they were. And yet that makes it harder for trump to get traction on these issues, if theyre not as salient as they once were. And i think youre seeing that kind of flailing. On the polls, one last thing i would mention. At Labor Day at thiS Point in 2016. Hillary clinton had a roughly 3. 7 lead. Of course, she went on to lose. Joe biden had about a Sevenpoint Lead at thiS Point in 2020. And ended up winning by about four points. And Kamala Harris had about a 3. 3 lead, average by 338. A little less than Hillary Clinton did three years ago and significantly less than Joe Biden. She has changed the momentum, absolutely. And those Trend Lines willie and joe are talking about are absolutely right. Its worth remembering how close this is and how much these numbers are, you know, fluid and hard to predict. This is such a close race. Its in effect, tied, aS Peter said, and its really going to be turnout, turnout, turnout. Donald trump, yesterday, lamenting that he got 77 Million votes, more votes than he got the first time, but still, and he admitted it for the first time, i guess, lost by a whisker. Thats because democrats did a better job of getting out voters. Whoever gets more of their side out, it seems obvious, but its true. They win. As always, its a battle for getting out the vote. David french, i want to go to another issue, obviously a deal that matters a great deal to you, but an issue thats been turned upside down since dobbs. Ive said several times over the past several years, i havent seen an Issue Shift as dramatically as ive seen Abortion Shift in a very long time that reminds me of prop 13 in california in 1978, that really signified something big happening in 80 with the Reagan Revolution Starting in earnest. But you now have women under 45 saying the most important issue is not the economy anymore, its abortion. You have Donald Trump flipflopping, now saying hes going to be a champion of womens Reproductive Rights. You have him saying that he will vote against the Sixweek Bill in florida, the Sixweek Ban in florida. He, of course, keeps shifting, he keeps going back and forth. You have the texas race, according to university of Houston Poll in senate, getting very close in part because of abortion. Ted cruz leading collin allred. Talk about the Shifting Landscape and what challenges it poses, especially for Donald Trump who, again, weve talked about evangelicals falling in line. And their bargain, their cynical bargain, their bargain that i mocked from the very beginning. Like supporting a prochoice candidate, who transparently shifted to be prolife, to get their vote. You know, then it gave them a license to do whatever they wanted to do. Now were seeing once again that that cynical deal evangelicals made with Donald Trump seems to be going up in smoke. Yeah, it really is. Ill tell you what happened is, there are a lot of prolife folks who justified supporting trump, because they said, he has the strength and the tenacity to pursue prolife goals than others, and now republicans have ended up with the most watered down proLife Plank. Its more functionally prochoice, than any time in decades, in decades and trump himself flipflopping all over the place, first saying that the florida Sixweek Ban is too strict, then flopping back at that after a lot of online outrage. Its an absolute mess. I would say if you talk to a smart, reasonable prolife activist, they would not have foreseen the total public backlash that has been ongoing since dobbs. The prolife Movement Hasnt fully reacted to that and Donald Trump is the worst possible standardbearer. You know, david, how ironic is it that we conservatives, you and i, were conservatives. Trump republicans are not conservatives. I said it, you dont have to say it, but we conservatives warned for years and railed for years against push things on americans by judicial fiat. And instead of going out and winning on this issue, winning through the hearts and minds of americans, winning democratically in elections and in grassroots the republicans said Donald Trump republicans said, were just going to win at the Supreme Court. The hell with what everybody else thinks, were just going to win at the Supreme Court and well take that as a victory and run with it. And what happened . Exactly what we conservatives said would happen. The same thing that happened when liberal judgeS Passed things that were out of line with what mainstream voters, what Middle Class americans wanted. Well, look, ill say, i supported dobbs. I thought roe was wrongly decided and dobbs was rightly decided, but what you began to see happen was there was so because you had abandoned anybody who could go to the Big American Middle, and make that prolife case, because you went away from somebody like that towards a Donald Trump, what happened is, the proLife Movement was not ready for the postroe world. The postroe world was going to be democracy. Thats correct. The postroe world was going to be people voting and in embracing Donald Trump, in many ways, what happened was, you repelled the people who might otherwise vote for you. And so now there hasnt even been a prolife vote thats been won in a referendum even in Red States since dobbs. And the movement is reeling right now. It really is. You look, before dobbs, there were polls, most polls showed, mika, that the plurality of americans supported well, what Mississippis Law was that was challenged that led to dobbs, which was a 16week Window for abortions, which, by The Way is what most European Countries had at that time, like france, germany, others. About 16week pan, but now thats changed dramatically. So much has changed dramatically postdobbs. And its really impacting elections in dramatic way, in places like kansas, kentucky, conservative states. Trump can flipflop all he wants on abortion, but the resounding truth is, what he did with the overturning of roe and his taking the credit for that, because he can. And that resounding truth iS Playing out across america. His flipflops just show him more to be The Wizard Of Oz. More to be someone who lies to get he started out as a democrat. People, i think, as this store plays out for women across america, and the men who love them, this is going to be the issue that takes him down. Whats so crazy about this flipflopping on abortion, and saying that hes going to be a champion of Reproductive Rights and saying that hes against nobody can believe that. Hes not going to win over people who are prochoice. And and all hes going to do is depress the prolife vote, the evangelical vote. Its a lose lose for him. The youngest son of the late senator John Mccain is endorsing Kamala Harris for president. Jimmy mccain saying the incident last week involving Donald Trumps Campaign Staff at Arlington National Cemetery can convinced him to switch affiliation from an independent to a Democrat And Support harris this fall. Mccain, who recently returned from deployment at a Military Base in jordan said trumps campaign violated a sacred place by taking photos and video in an area where they are normally prohibited. Arlington cemetery is sacred to all people who have all people who are members of the military, all people who have served in the uniform. Its a sacred area. There are three generations of mccain that are buried there. Its a violation, because these rules are set in place. The people who are buried there dont have an opinion. The point of Arlington Cemetery is to go and show respect for the men and women who have given their lives for this country. When you make it political, you take away the respect of the people who are there. Peter baker, thats jimmy mccain, John Mccains son. We had Jeffrey Goldberg on yesterday, talking about his new book, which points to that Mccain Moment in 2015 as the canary in the coal mine, as a red flag, that he criticized the Heroism And Service of John Mccain. Most people thought, thats it, especially inside a republican primary. You dont do that. Youre done. And he went on, of course, to become the nominee and then the president of the united states. This is not a surprising moment, perhaps, given The Way that Donald Trump has talked about John Mccain and his family, but notable nonetheless because jimmy mccain who has served talked about the offense he saw in a military family, not just in what Donald Trump did last week at arlington or his team did at arlington last week, but over the last decade or so. Yeah, theres a disconnect between former President Trump and the culture of military service, right . He told john kelly, his second chief of staff, when they visited, John Kellys Sons Grave that he didnt understand what was in it for soldier who is went into combat. He said to kelly, according to kelly, anyway, that those who went to war were suckers and losers. Of course, hes denied that, but President Trump did not go to war. He had Bone Spurs that were diagnosed in his feet by a podiatrist who was doing a favor to his father to get out of service in vietnam. So for a lot of military people, Theres Something about former President Trump that doesnt understand the values and virtues that military people feel. Remember, he told general kelly at one point while he waS President , he says, you know, you fing generals, i dont understand, why arent you like the german generals. And kelly said, what you talking about . The german generals in World War ii, you mean hitlers generals . Yeah, they were very loyal at thiS Point. And kelly had to remind him, well, they tried to kill hitler several times. His idea of the military is that they are political and answer to him, that they are to be loyal servants to him. That is what mark milley, the joint chiefs chairman, he appointed himself, resisted in the final months of the administration. He wrote a secret resignation letter, he was so upset at The Way he saw trump politicizing the military, he put the letter in a drawer and said, im going to fight to keep trump from abusing the power of the military for political purposes, in those last days in office. Of course, Mike Flynn shows up in the White House with a plan that would essentially declare Martial Law over the country in order to reinstate or to keep President Trump in power. So his relationship with the military is a fascinating and important one. And i think itS Popular with a lot of people in the military, if you do these rallies, youll see a lot of veterans there. He absolutely does speak to them in a lot of ways. But a lot of people who have the feeling and the culture of the place, people like jimmy mccain, John Mccain and how he passed really resent trumps attitude toward the military. Jimmy mccain, you really see a little bit of John Mccains legacy living on, if you look at hiS Political life. He often made decisions that were hard and that went against the grain, but they were the right thing, the patriotic thing to do. Country first. Peter baker, thank you very much. Time now for a look at some of the stories making headlines this morning. House republicans have subpoenaed Secretary Of State Antony Blinken to testify about the deadly u. S. Withdrawal from afghanistan. Congressman mike mccall, who chairs the foreign Affairs Committee, says blinken must appear on September 19th or Face Contempt charges. The State Department calls the subpoena disappointing, noting the secretary has already given congressional testimony on the matter 14 times. This is a political ploy, nothing but a political ploy. You look at what theyre doing in september, what theyre doing on the night of the on the day of the debate. Again, you look at the timing, and its theyre rolling out a political campaign interesting timing. On Capitol Hill, when you have blinken doing his best to help release hostages. One day of Trumps Sentencing. Donald trump has ordered by a federal judge to stop playing the Song Hold on im coming on the Campaign Trail. It comes as the family of one of the songs cowriters, isaac hayes, pursues a lawsuit against the former president over its use. The judge, however, denied a request to force the campaign to take down any existing videos that include the song. And thousands of teachers and School Staffers across the country could lose their jobs as covid19 funds dry up. Districts are now scrambling to balance their budgets and place unfunded staffers into different roles. Schools serving lowincome students will be hit the hardest, because initially, they received more federal relief. Well follow that. And still ahead on Morning Joe, Donald Trump admits that he lost the 2020 election. Well play that new sound for you. Plus, a judge denies the former president s second request to move his hush Money Case to federal court. Well have the latest on trumps latest legal troubles. Youre Watch Morning joe. And the second time, i got millions more votes than i got the first time. I was told if i got 63 Million, which is what i got the first time, you would win. You cant not win. And i got millions of more votes than that. And lost by a whisker. Lost by a whisker. Donald Trump Yesterday admitting that he did, in fact, lose the 2020 race to president Joe Biden. You know, john, hes said for whatever its been, four years now, again and again, how could i lose when i got 11 Million more votes than i got in 2020 . The way you lose is, the other person youre running against gets many more votes than you go. He got 63 Million in 2016, he did get 74 Million votes in 2020. The problem is that Joe Biden got 81 Million votes, which is how this works. I cant argue with the math. For former President Trump, hes a couple of times kind of slipped up and acknowledged that he lost. We should remember, of course, that after november 2020, after that election day, he was told repeatedly by fellow republicans, by members of his own staff, sir, to use hiS Phrasing, you did lose. He even acknowledged it. Theres reporting in my book and others, Kellyanne Conway and others acknowledged it. He pushed the Big Lie for four years that fueled the January 6th insurrection. It has fueled dozens of criminal charges against him and of course, we know, hundreds of people have been convicted of rioting there at the capitol. So this is, you know, probably a slip of the tongue yesterday. I doubt well get a grateful Concession Speech Today from Donald Trump to Joe Biden, acknowledging i did actually lose in 2020. Im sure hell go back to pushing the lie again. And hes laying the groundwork this time around. Saying if he does lose, it had to have been rigged or stolen. Somethings wrong with it. Which could again fuel doubts in his supporters minds and many officials fear, violence again. Hopefully the difference now is the country iS Prepared for that. We couldnt have really imagined a president not conceding the election, and leading a group of his supporters to the capitol in an attempted insurrection. And the other difference this time around would be, hes not in power. Last time in 2020, they had levers of government at his disposal. This time around, he does not. The court said again and again and again that he lost the election. And his own aids, his attorney general, bill barr, and others told him, his claims that the election was stolen were bs, to put it mildly. Meanwhile, a federal judge has denied former President Trumps second attempt to move his hush Money Case to federal court. Trump argued the State Judge presiding over the criminal case, Juan Marchon is biased against him. And the united states Supreme Court immunity ruling in july offers a federal offense for the hush Money Case. A u. S. District judge rejected both of those arguments. Trumps attorneys filed a notice of appeal late last night. Judge marchon has scheduled Trumps Sentencing for september 18th. The former president found guilty on 34 Felony Counts earlier this year of falsifying Business Records to conceal payments to adult film actress, stormy daniels. Joining us now, former u. S. Attorney and msnbc legal analyst, joyce vance. Shes cohost of the sistersinlaw podcast. Joyce, good morning. Always good to see you. Were you surprised by anything you heard yesterday in this rejection by the judge of the appeal from Trumps Team. No, and thats a great way to ask the question, willie. Nothing here is surprising. Trump had already tried this Removal Stunt back in july of last year. And the court told him no. Trump took an appeal, then, but he abandoned that appeal. And the reason iS Pretty clear. The judge, Judge Hellerstein held a hearing, looked at the evidence, the facts, and concluded that the case the manhattan d. A. Had brought waS Purely private conduct. It was a hush Money Payment from Donald Trump to a Porn Star about an affair. Nothing to do with the business of the presidency. Now Donald Trump is trying it again, hes facing criminal sentencing in manhattan on his 34 counts of conviction in two weeks. Hes desperate to stop that. But the judge said, look, weve already taken a look at this, Theres Nothing new here. I wont even give you permission to file these removal papers. And thats the key here. The first time you try to remove a case, you do that automatically. The second time, you need permission from the court. The Fight Isnt actually about the merits of removal, its about whether or not the judge was correct to say, you dont get to do it a second time. The judge supported that decision very precisely. Saying that Theres Nothing new. This is untimely, and you cant do it again, mr. Trump. Joyce, as you said, that sentencing, two weeks from today. September 18th, obviously, in the middle of the stretch of the president Ial Campaign. There has been some speculation that that date could slide. That the Trumps Team has asked for delays. The manhattan d. A. s office has suggested an openness to it, as the judge sorts out whether this Immunity Decision really applies here. How do you read this going forward. Do you think two weeks from today that sentencing actually occurs . It depends on how the Appellate Court handles this. If they take the approach Judge Hellerstein took, then we could be on track for the 18th. But theres the possibility that this goes up to the Supreme Court, and that theres some delay there. I wouldnt expect them, by The Way, to reverse Judge Hellersteins decision. Theyll review it for an abuse of discretion, and hes clearly well within his discretion to deny trump thiS Permission, but it could take some time. And we know that with Donald Trump, delay is always a win. Sounds like even the appellate process could take some time, if im hearing you right. Could that at least delay the sentencing . When are these appellate decisions going to be coming down that would impact whether or not he can delay his sentencing, and do you know, by any chance, who iS Paying for his legal fees for all of this. Well, i think thats the big question, right. Whether or not its Donald Trumps supporters who are paying through their donations, as has often been the case. When it comes to the Appellate Courts, mika, they get to set their own timelines. We could see very prompt action, but weve also seen the Supreme Court recently in cases involving Donald Trump, take a graciouS Plenty of time before they issue their decisions. And thats frankly how the Court System works. Its something thats been frustrated for many of us watching these cases. They can slow this matter down, only to ultimately reject Donald Trumps effort to delay the sentencing after he has succeeded in delaying the sentencing. Hopefully theyll act promptly here. Former u. S. Attorney joist vance, thank you, as always. We appreciate your coming on this morning. And David French, your latest piece for the New York times is entitled, the Loneliness Epidemic has a cure. And in it, you write in part, this what is the most important single thing that you can do to heal our national divides and improve the social and economic mobility of your struggling neighbors . Id submit that its not voting for the right candidate, though you certainly should do that, nor is it engaging in activism to raise visibility for a worthy cause, though i endorse that as well. Instead, its something that is at once much simpler, but also much more difficult. Make a new friend. Millions of americans are lonely. They feel sad, mad, and stuck. Theyre alienated from their communities and angry at their predicament and they dont feel that they have many options to improve their lives. But friendship can help fix each of those problems. With fellowship comes joy. With connection comes opportunity. There are few higher and better callings than to forge a bond with a person and provide a place where they belong. And david, its beautiful, the piece. Ill let you end with the final thought on that. Make a friend or reach out and help someone who needs help. It was inspired by the American Capital Social Survey from the american enterprise institute. It found that americans that had a high School Diploma or less had far fewer friends than those with a high School Diploma or more. They have less social support and less sense of belonging. And that means less economic mobility, more sadness. And so, we in a very real way, a lot of our problems in politics are related to the fact that people dont have those personal connections in their lives. And i think that each of us has a responsibility to reach out to our neighbors in a way thats going to make them feel as if they belong here. And this country, and their community, and their neighborhoods. And that could go a long way towards curing a lot of the anxious and anxiety that we feel in this nation. And when you reach out, its not by text, okay . Were talking about like really reaching out, like knocking on the door. All right, david, thank you. Coming up, one race for u. S. That was former president Ronald Reagan nearly three years after leaving office, at the dedication of hiS President ial library. Reagans life from Humble Beginnings in illinois through his two terms in the White House is the subject of a new comprehensive biography titled reagan his Life And Legend. And the New York times bestselling author of The Book, Max Boot joins us now. Hes also a columnist for the Washington Post and Senior Fellow at the counsel of foreign relations. Max, ill turn it over to the table in a bit, but first i want to ask you a couple of questions. I was struck last night. I saw someone who grew up a conservative, loving Ronald Reagan, who now basically bows at the feet of orban, supports the appeasement of Vladimir Putin in ukraine, and still claims the mantle of Ronald Reagan. Explain those contradictions. Well, its hard to explain, joe, except to say that the republican party has been drifting ever further to the right ever since roughly 1964, when Barry Goldwater was the nominee. And what you saw was that Ronald Reagan was further to the right than Richard Nixon or gerald ford. Now were in a situation where Donald Trump and people who support trump are very farther to the right than Ronald Reagan, whereas every generation thats come before are denounced as sellouts or rinos or people who arent really republicans. But The Party has gone so far to the right before, that the previous generation and folks like Ronald Reagan, who was a republican icon, would not recognize what The Party has become. David french, ill give you the next question. Ive got to say that its fascinating that just like people who call themselves evangelicals dont use it, david, french as a description of their faith. Can you show me David French, please . They dont use the term evangelical as a description of their faith, they use it a as a cultural marker. We see the same thing with reagan. People who have no idea what Ronald Reagan stands for are against what 90 of what Ronald Reagan stood for, whether you talk about Free Trade or immigration, or whether you talk about standing up to russian aggression, i could go down the list. Whether you talk about being conservative ideologically and moderate temperamentally, working with democrats, working with Tip Oneil types. Theres such a radical difference, that, again, just like Tim Keller is saying, i dont call myself an evangelical, because its now a political phrase, i feel the same thing about people who claim the mantle of Ronald Reagan. Its amazing, you know, the number of republicans i run into who actually believe and say that trump is an heir to reagan is amazing to me. There is this really remarkable Con Job that is taking place, i think, within the republican party, where a very many republicans actually still believe that the current republican party iS Part of that reagan legacy, when it is a direct repudiation of that legacy. And this gap, this gap between What Trumpism is, and what Ronald Reagan and who Ronald Reagan was, and what he believed is immense. But its surprising to me constantly that ordinary, everyday republicans often dont recognize that. And i think you know, one question i would have for max would be, is he seeing any element of that reagan legacy still remnant, still remaining in a way that could be ignited again . Well, there are certainly aspects of the reagan legacy that are still around. But i think we also need to be fair and objective. And this book that i wrote is not meant to be, its really trying to tell the story of reagan in a fair and balanced way. And when we do that, we have to see that it wasnt all positive. It wasnt all sweetness and light. Reagan also had failures and weaknesses. And while theres much more many more differences than resemblances between reagan and todays republican party, there are also some disturbing Trend Lines that have continued over the decades, including the fact that reagan did engage in white backlash politics. He did use fake facts. He ignored a pandemic just as Donald Trump did. There are aspects of Reagans Registration where you can see, oh, this is how the republican party got from there to here. Even though the differences are much greater than the similarities. You have to understand that there are also some disturbing continuities. So i think we have to wrestle with the real reagan, not just with the legend or the myths that have grown up around him. Weve seen, max, over the last several years, and weve played on this show Ronald Reagans Farewell Speech in January Of 1989. Where he stopped and very deliberately took a moment to talk about immigration and how importantly it is to the country and the beauty, as he saw it, in people coming to this country and becoming americans. Boy, what a contrast, obviously, to Donald Trump, who began hiS Political career, talking about murderers and rapists flowing over the border, and chances of build that wall, all of that. When did that divide happen in the republican party. In other words, how did we get from that speech with Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump in 2015 and 16 . That is, willie, definitely one of the biggest differences between reagan and trump, in that reagan did have a somewhat troubling record on civil rights, because he was opposed to civil rights legislation, but he was very positive on immigration. He was very proimmigration, throughout his career. In fact, you know, in the 1980 campaign, he was talking about getting rid of the borders between the u. S. And mexico. This was a genesis of nafta. In 1986, he signed an Immigration Bill that legalized millions of undocumented immigrants, what Republicans Today would call a quote unquote amnesty bill. You mentioned in his farewell address, he gave a moving tribute to The Way that america was built by immigrants. So thats a huge difference. And i think there is always an element of the republican the r that was very uncomfortable with that. There was always the more nativist part of the republican party. It became more pronounced over time. You saw it in the early 2000s when John Mccain and other republicans were trying to get a balanced Immigration Bill. Remember, more than a decade ago Marco Rubio and others were in favor of a legalized bill that recognized undocumented. Now it is the far right, populist, nativist right that has taken over the republican party. Max, certainly that was reaganS Political influence, but talk to us about how his life really represents a changing america in the 20th century and the time that he lives. It is a fascinating trajectory because, you know, he was born in 1911 in small town, illinois. I like to say he was kind of born on the real main street usa, which became a ride in disneyland. But when he was growing up it was the reality in small towns like tampico and dixon, rural america, very traditional america. You know, hiS Parents only had a grade school education. They were very impoverished. His father was a shoe salesman. He lost one job after another. They moved from Town To town, but the center of his life was football and going to church. And then, of course, he graduated from college in 1932 and graduated into the great depression, and i dont think anybody could have possibly imagined how america would change by the time he waS President in the 1980s with, you know, nuclear missiles capable of destroying the world in 30 minutes, with computers, all of these other tremendous inventions. It is really, you know, a Tribute To Reagan that he came from this very different america and yet he was able to look at the future with hope and optimism and to help Guide America into a different era in the 1980s. I want to ask you, max, just as now a biographer of Ronald Reagan about how for other buy buy biographers he seemed ton impenetrable, Finding The Real Reagan beneath the hollywood very near. You look at Poor Edmond Morris who wrote some of the greatest biographies on t. R. Completely collapse under the strain of being reagans official biographer. And then, of course, Rick Pearlstein who i think wrote two of the best books i have ever read about the Conservative Movement in america, Before The Storm about Barry Goldwaters rice and then nixon land. But, again, the same thing appeared to happen to help when he approached reagan. Again, it seems that reagan was always confounding to his biographers, even those who worked for him for 30 years and sometimes even his own children found him impenetrable. Why is that . Did you have a problem as his biographer finding the, quote, real reagan . I think you are certainly on to something, joe, because reagan was always sort of hiding in plain sight. He always seemed very amiable, very personable, very friendly, and yet there was always this kind of icy reserve, this distance that he always had from other people. Even Nancy Reagan said there was always a part of him that was walled off even from her. I think that really is rooted in his childhood where was we were just discussing a second ago, he would move from Town To town. So he didnt really make a lot of friends. He always was kind of removed from other kids because he knew he was not going to be around for very long, and he also, you know, had a painful Upbringing Hearing arguments amongst hiS Parents, a lot of strive in the home. So he became somebody who kind of did not make friends very well and also somebody who shied away from personality conflicts, who never wanted to get too close to anybody. So, you know, he always used his jokes and his stories, The Way he interacted with him as a shield against people because fundamentally, and it is one of the paradoxes of Ronald Reagan who is the great Communicator And Somebody they thought they knew, he was, in fact, very reserved. Stu spencer, his longtime political consultants and one of the best people i interviewed for the booK Said, reagan would have made a good permit because he didnt need anybody. He was happy sitting in front of the tv watching Gun Smoke or bonanza, reading some of his books. He was not someone who wanted to go out. He was somewhat shy and reeverybody issed. But then when he was on the stage speaking to the nation he turned into somebody else. So reserved. I remember reading Mike Deaver who, of course, was with him so long saying that he worked for reagan for decades and never once did he forget that he was nothing more than a staffer. Right, just because there was, again, that sort of icy reserve. It was just who Ronald Reagan was. It was, again, impenetrable for most people. The new booK Sfwielted you know, joe, the funny thing sorry. Go ahead. The funny thing iS People said he had no friends, but i discovered he had a couple of friends when he waS President , and they were his ranch hands, his former California Police officers who used to protect him. Those were the people he was closer to, not the alfred bloomingdales and the other tycoons he hobnobbed with. That was nancys crowd. What he liked to do was go out and chop wood, Ride Horses and be one of the guys with the two Blue Collar friends he on the ranch and those were the people he was close to. The new book entitled reagan his Life And Legend Goes On Sale next tuesday, September 10th. New york times bestselling author, Max Boot. Thank you very much for sharing that with us this morning. We appreciate it. Congratulations. New york times Opinion Columnist David French, thank you as well for your piece. David, any final shots. Great piece. Any final thoughts . No, im just gobsmacked into looking back at that reagan legacy and the gap between then and now, and i think it is always worth remembering what could have been, perhaps can be again, or what once waS Perhaps can be again. Right. Still ahead, nbcs Morgan Radford will break down new polling that shows where Vice President Kamala Harris stands among latino voters and the key issues they face ahead of election. Hes a War Hero. Hes a War Hero because he was captured. I like people who werent captured. Do you agree with that . He is a War Hero because he was captured. What trump said about my father is, you know, irrep irreprensible. I have never forgotten it. Remind everyone John Mccain was my father as well, the guy i went to when i skinned my knee. To see those things said about him i could never forgive. One thing about him, he loved his country and we moved on that way. I was gone for a year, but as soon as i was back i see, you know, i care about my family, i care about equal rights of everyone in this country. I care about all of this, and, you know, as much as i stayed as an independent i decided, you know, it was time to move on and do what i believe in. You know, the fact of the matter that he said it constantly is country first. You have to think about your country first. However that is, care about your country. Care about making it better, not being divided but being together as one, to continue to be the greatest country in the world. You know, he sounds like John Mccain. Yeah. Country first. Jimmy mccain, the late senator John Mccains youngest son responding to Donald TrumpS Past comments about his father and explaining why hes now registering as a Democrat To Support Vice President Kamala Harris this november. Welcome back to Morning Joe. It is wednesday, september 4th. Jonathan lemire is still with us. Nbc contributor Mike Barnicle. Hoist of the podcast on brand with donny deutsch. Donny deutsch. Good to have you with us this hour. You know, i was in conversation a couple of weeks ago when mika and i were away, and around the table just randomly were five different people and sitting there, four of them, four of them, former republicans. We just happened to come together. There was no like sort of planning. I didnt call tell mika, hey, lets call our former republican friends. These were just friends. Friends, people from different walks of life, and all people who left the republican party. All people who voted for republicans in every election their entire life until 2016. Some of them voted for Donald Trump in 2016, but didnt in 2020. One of them said after January 6th that was enough. We have jimmy mccain here. Again, we had David French on the show. You know, you look at elise jordan, you know, who sort of is a more libertarian but always voted republican. It is really shocking that republican leaders in the house, in the senate, on the State Level Arent more concerned with all of the republicans they have lost. I will say again without going over it, but all of the elections they have lost in consecutive years since 2017. It does beg the question, if they lose again will they then see that they have to turn turn away from trump. From Donald Trump . Im not saying they go back to Ronald Reagan, but they certainly can adopt some of the positive elements of reagan, reaganism and then, you know, move forward with other conservative viewpoints that Donald Trump has just completely abandoned. Yeah, where did the Nikki Haley republicans end up, people who are still republicans. It was interesting after jimmy mccain, senator Mccains Son came out, who by The Way he served in the united states army, just got back from the Middle East. Marine corps. What was that. Marines corps. Marine corps and just got back from deployment. His sister, meghan mccain, said, im not voting for Republican And Vote for better days. I dont thinK She is going to vote for Kamala Harris either. There are what you are talking about, former republicans, people hanging on to the idea of what we were talking about in the last segment with Max Boot and David French, there may be life for republicans on the other side of Donald Trump. As you say yeah. It is not just him, it is the candidates who he pushed on The Party who lost winnable races in the governors mansion, senate, that cost them seats of power as they continue to hitch their wagon to Donald Trump despite the results we have seen. If you talk to republicans, republican leaders, republicans in the senate, off the record, Mike Barnicle, they will tell you that Donald Trump has cost them the senate, control of the senate over the past four years, specifically by the chaos he has unleashed within the republican party in the state of georgia and hes at it again. And you do you do wonder, mike, at what point do republicans step forward and actually do what my class did and fight for things like a balanced budget, a strong military, you know, reforms that make programs stronger . At what point . I mean we balanced the budget four years in a row. It is the only time it happened in 100 years. Thats something that, again, most americans would say that makes sense, protecting taxpayer money. But even this trump republican party, they exploded the national debt even before covid, more than any party in history. And when i go around and talk to people, it is not just former republicans. You know, they say, we need a conservative party again. Not a trump conservative party, but a conservative party, a real conservative party, and it is just not there. Joe, that clip we showed coming into this segment was ten years ago, Donald Trump saying that John Mccain, you know, was not a War Hero or he was a War Hero but he was captured, he liked people who werent captured. He has had a grip on the republican party ever since then. When that happened i received a call early in the morning on the night after he said that from a fairly prominent democratic united States Senator who said, did you hear what trump said last night about John Mccain . We both agreed on the phone, and i think a lot of people probably shared the agreement that his candidacy was done before it ever took off, but it wasnt done. He became president of the united states. Thats what the republican party is living with every day since then. Today we have a damaged, delusional old man who may again get elected to the presidency of the united states. He is that close to it again . How did this happen . How did it happen that a man who speaks The Way he speaks, deranged sometimes, delusional sometimes, some of The Things he posts on truth social, his website, you cannot repeat on television, you wouldnt repeat the words in front of your children, thats who he is. How did we get here . How did the republican party get there . I have to tell you and i hesitate to say this and i dont know where johnny, willie would agree with me, but theres a falseness going on. He can say whatever crazy thing he wants to say about sharks and electric batteries, and it is not covered in the sense that it is covered describing who said it, why he said it and who the man is, trump. Out of his mind. Always in that story in the equivalency, the False Equivalency by too many reporters and too many american newspapers theres also, by The Way, Kamala Harris changed her mind on fracking. They always throw in something like that. Exactly. In coverage of the story. It is ridiculous. We dont cover the man for how dangerous he is. Yeah, Jonathan Lemire, the shocking statements come every day, and not surprising but still shocking what he says. And, you know, even arlington, seen major Newspaper Outlets talk about how will this impact Kamala Harris and the issue of afghanistan after he goes. A thumbs up. And pictures. And just acts like a brute and, you know, desecrates arlington. Thats not a time to say, well, how does but, again, we see it time and time again. For some reason the mainstream media, nine years into Donald Trumps era in American Politics still doesnt know how to cover Donald Trump. They still are engaging even at this late hour in moral relativism and saying, yeah, but, yeah, but. And, again, they just again, they have they just dont know how to put it in proper perspective because, as i said yesterday, they are so concerned about being objective that theyre treating this race like it was 1996, clinton versus dole, or 2004 bush versus kerry. Their objective, and i put that word in quote, their objectivity is actually not objective at all. It ends up playing to Donald Trumps advantage. Thank you. Every day because they are so numbed by the hate, the Hate Speech that is spewed out of his mouth for the past nine years. Yeah, i think it is a fair analysis. A lot of Media Professionals would agree with you that mainstream media as it were is still struggling, still adapting as to how to cover Donald Trump because he is someone we have never seen before. Yes, it is almost a decade since and certainly much has been written fairly about the mistakes made in 2015, 2016. I would argue the media has certainly improved. We were better at covering 2020 than we were in 2016. I think in many ways we have been good about costing trumpS Postpresidency. But youre right, in an effort to appear objective and balanced, mistakes are being made and applied to both candidates when Donald Trump is a different animal. He is an insurrectionist candidate. We should never lose sight of it. He lies more than any other major political figure we have ever had, not even close. He is someone who flouts every rule and norm. He is someone who has been convicted of a crime, and all of that needs to be said and said. I think the other focus here needs to be as the media, on the stakes of this election, what it means. Not just the daytoday developments. Yes, we have to cover that, too. It does matter. But it is about the stake. It is about what it means for the Nations Democracy and future. Theres also one more caveat that we should adhere and mika just alluded to it. What kind of a person, what kind of a Human Being stands on the grounds of section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery, filled with historys heroes, Frozen Forever in death, peoples sons, brothers, husbands, wives, buried for the republic, what kind of person stands there, looks into a camera smiles with the thumbs up like this with the headstones behind him . Ask yourself that question. What kind of a person does that . Right. And one family, two families, they dont own arlington. Arlington, of course, is for those who, as jimmy mccain said yesterday, Cant Speak for themselves. So to be used aS Political props, it is so disturbing. You know, yesterday to follow up on what jonathan said yesterday, a former republican senator, a former conservative republican senator said on the air that he could not vote for Donald Trump because hes an insurrectionist. And the person interviewing him said, you should be worried about other things like Tax Policy and regulations. I mean how do you put an insurrection against the united States Government up against changes in the Tax Code. I dont understand the short sightedness. No. You have to have a country in order to have Tax Policy. Remember, we were talking on The Street with the republican couple and the conversation was so difficult because one of them was definitely going to vote for Kamala Harris knowing that ultimately that person wants to see a strong republican party return. Right. And the only way that happens is getting rid of trump and maga. Im sorry, thats the only way it happens. He cant be on the stage. He cant be controlling and pushing the buttons on the republican party for The Party to be conservative and true to its core values. And the others, thinking about the money and thinking about, well, you know, truth is fungible or whatever. Right. It is crazy the conversations out there. Yeah. You know, donny, The Thing is also so this argument that was made yesterday by an economic reporter, dont worry about the insurrection, worry instead about Tax Code and i think regulations. It really underlines the point i have made on this show before that i will make again. If you are a capitalist, if you believe in american capitalism as i believe in american capitalism, unapologetically believe in american capitalism. It has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic system ever. It has itS Problems. The sharp edges always need to be rounded off where it doesnt get in The Way of competition and free markets. But if you believe in american capitalism, you should be worried about Donald Trump being elected. We always talk about democracy. We always talk about democracy, about madisonon democracy, which is under threat. I will tell you, i grew up a conservative, i know you didnt. But what we conservatives believe is in less government, Less Power concentrated, the imperial presidency. LesS Power concentrated in washington, d. C. Here you have Donald Trump saying, im going to take all of the power into my office, im going to control the fed, im going to control the fcc, im going to control the justice department, im going to control everything that i can control within the oval office, that is the antithesis of madisonian democracy. It is the antithesis of checks and balances as laid out in the united states constitution. What that should do is worry ceos. It should worry entrepreneurs. That should ware capitalists. Republicans. Because thats what you get in corrupt nations where you have a strong man who picks winners and losers. Thats when competition, thats when the free market, thats when the invisible hand is slapped by the autocrat running the state. Thats when capitalism loses. I have a question about capitalism for people voting for Donald Trump. I always get into this, like i was with a group of people, kind of republican types, you know, swing voters, republican types. I go, well, i hate Donald Trump but, or i know Donald Trump is a bad guy, but im still voting for him, i cant go there. I said why . You know, hiS Policies. I said what policies . You know, taxes. I said, do you not understand that going back to Jimmy Carter, Take A Look at your 401 K S and your Stock Portfolios and i give them the argument you just did, you understand capitalism as you know it will cease to exist, you look at everything from the fcc, to the fed, everything reporting to him, to his choice of oligarchs and they still tilt their head and go, i like hiS Policy. Theres this resistance. I dont know what it is. I dont know if it is something we have to stay The Way we are and we Cant Move forward and i like things The Way they are and i dont want to share more and theres too much evening out with democrats, but there is this weird apology for im going to vote for a bad guy, i dont care, im going to vote for somebody who is morally corrupt, i dont care. Then you bring up January 6th. Well, you know. But there is a resistance to take in the evil and the moral corruption and to excel their moral compass down the road that i still as a behaviorist, as a Consumerist I Cannot figure out. Maybe you can help me with this. Theres this willingness to put aside stuff thats really serious. Oh, you guys take him too seriously. He didnt mean The Thing he said, all of those. To the people donny is talking about and you guys are talking about, when you put these questions, the dow this morning is opening at 41,000. 41,000. Historic unemployment in this country. Yes. You go down the road. I guess it comes down in some cases to the corporate Tax Rate being too high. Trump says he will bring it down to 15 from 28 . Theyre worried Kamala Harris will raise it higher than that. They find ways to do it or they tell you, did you see there was a transgender runner at the Paralympics Yesterday who didnt even finish, you know, make the final . It is those kind of right. So theres the Tax Rate and then theres, for lack of a better term, a woke element to it they seem to be fighting against. I mean it is it really is. They are they have come to a conclusion and they always try to justify the conclusion. When it is hit with facts they just have no answer. Well. She is a socialist. Like they said biden is a socialist. Well, you know, the dow just keeps hitting record highs, and youre richer now than you have ever been i tell them. BidenS President , not trump. The Biden Presidency has made you richer than you have ever been. Thats socialism . The Biden Presidency has created a Record Number of jobs. Compare it to Donald TrumpS Presidency. Thats socialism . The american dollar over the past few years stronger than any time its been in over a generation. That is socialism . Under Donald Trump, the federal deficit higher than ever before. The federal debt, higher than ever before. Donald trump broke records. You know, Donald Trump over his four years raised the federal debt more than Bill Clinton and his eight years in office, george h. W. Bush, his four years in office, Jimmy Carters four years in Office And Gerald fords two years in office. He raised the federal debt more in four years than those president s raised it over 18 years. I mean you could go down it is cult like. One marker after another economically and Donald Trump doesnt doesnt come close to the record of the Biden Harris Administration. So if you are a capitalist, if you believe in free markets, if you believe in the strong stock market, a strong job market, a strong economy, really the answer iS Pretty simple. You dont want Donald Trump back in the White House. And yet, and yet it is almost like they watch Cable News channels every day that fill their head with propaganda, and theyre just not strong enough to change the channel. Not just smart enough to resist the lies or the disinformation or to go off, to go off a website that is just spouting constant lies. I mean the numbers, the economic numbers are undeniable. I know. The facts are undeniable, but yeah, yeah. And you made a good point there. Still ahead on Morning Joe, the Harris Campaign iS Putting the spotlight on Reproductive Rights and brought the issue to Donald Trumps doorstep with an event in Palm Beach. Welcome back. Allies of Vice President Kamala Harris have kicked off a national Bus Tour starting on Donald Trumps Home Turf in florida. The tour which will focus on Reproductive Rights began with a Stop Yesterday in Palm Beach. It heads to jacksonville today with at least 50 stopS Planned in key states throughout the fall. Joining us the democratic nominee for u. S. Senate in florida, former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarselpowell. I want to hear whether you will get to debate your opponent, but my question is how was the Bus Tour received in Palm Beach county, florida . Was there a crowd . Were they open to the message . Good morning, mika. Good morning, everyone. Oh, my goodness. I mean everything that you have been seeing in all of the rallies that have been held by the Vice President , it was the same exact thing. The energy was electric. That room waS Packed with women, women that have really just had enough of all of the attacks against our rights here in the state of florida. As you know, mika, we are now living under one of the most extreme bans on abortion, a Sixweek Ban that ricK Scott fully supports. He has been proudly saying he supports the Sixweek Ban, a ban that has hardly any exceptions to rape and incest. So people in the state of florida have been organizing now for more than a year, and this was just a pivotal moment where the Vice President and the Harris Campaign is sending a message. Florida is in play. What we have been organizing in our state was shown yesterday and it will continue to grow before november. So i need everyone watching, i need everyone with me because im running up against one of the most extreme senators that cannot get reelected, because if he does, even if we pass amendment 4, he will push for a national Abortion Ban. So i need everyone going to my website, contributing, joining the campaign, debbieforflorida. Com. If i may, can we talk more about the Sixweek Ban . What are the results of that . Because florida has been able to experience it for quite sometime now so there are consequences and there are things that have happened because of the Sixweek Ban that will continue to happen to women in florida, traumatizing the families who love them. Can you explain what a Sixweek Ban does to the Health Care of a woman who lives in the state of florida . Yes. You know, we have been hearing more and more stories that have been coming out. The Sixweek Ban went into effect may 1st. Yesterday at the rally anya cooK Spoke about her experience where she was turned away by a doctor. Her pregnancy was not developing, her feet us was not developing and she was sent home. The next day at a bathroom at a salon she had a miscarriage and lost almost half her blood and almost died because of it and almost lost her reproductive organs. Recently we heard of a similar story in miami. This is happening in the united states of america. This is happening in our own state where women are forced to leave the state to get this reproductive Health Care. Mika, you know that this is central, central not only to our Health Care, it is central to our dignity. This should be a decision that is made between a woman, her doctor, her family, her faith. In Latin America, as you know, my mother brought me and my sisters here from Latin America and we have seen laws being passed to protect Abortion Rights because we have seen that theres a rise of violence against women when you have extreme bans on abortion and also high rates of maternal mortality. Of course, the rates of maternal mortality are highest among black women and latino women. Congresswoman, good to have you on the show. I want to ask you, you mentioned immigrating to america, your family fleeing dictatorship, the charge that we hear from Senator Scott that they lump you and Kamala Harris that you are socialist, you want Price Controls on grocery, something that Vice President harris has talked about, saying you want amnesty for illegal immigrants. Could you address the Immigration Question first . First, you want to let illegal immigrants vote in the election which, of course, is against the law. A serious charge in florida, i dont need to tell you, you are somehow in league with socialist . It is completely false. RicK Scott has nothing but to spread this misinformation. He is one of the most extreme senators in the senate and ricK Scott has no idea what it is like for people like my family who had to grow up under a military dictatorship. I have Family Living in venezuela. I have very good friends in venezuela. He has no idea what it is like to fight for freedom and democracy. He is using thiS Pain, this attack, this false attack to try to score political points, and he is insulting the legacy of my mother, of latinos that have left socialist dictatorships. If he wants to talk about the border, let me just say a couple of things here. He had the opportunity not once but twice to vote for a Border Bill that i would have voted for that was sponsored and endorsed by customs and Border Patrol that would have provided significant funding for our border. We must protect our border, but we must have the courage to sit down at the table with republicans, democrats, whoever wants to deal with the issue we have at the border to make sure we provide legal pathways. Thats what republican Business Owners here in the state of florida have asked me to do. It is one of The Things we were trying to do when i was in the house of representatives. Look, if he wants to debate the issue of socialism, if he wants to debate the issue of the border, just this morning we released our acceptance to three different debates. What i would love to do is have a debate in spanish because he has been targeting latino communities, misinforming them, which is really dangerous for our communities. So i would love for ricK Scott to have the courage to stand next to me at the Debate Stage and lets do it in english and in spanish. Democratic nominee for senate in florida, former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarselpowell. Thank you very much for coming on the show this morning. Thank you. We really appreciate it. Take care. Coming up, nbcs Morgan Radford joins us straight ahead of new polling that looks at what latino voters think about the upcoming election and how the numbers compare to 2020. They are moving people into our country at numbers that nobody has ever seen, and those countries are becoming safe countries. And wait until you see what is going to happen. You know, theyre just getting acclimated. Do you know what that means . No. No, i dont know what that means because that thats not a word. What do you think that means . Acclemented. Theyre getting used to a society that really goes too far. Oh, acclemented, i understand. I think thats when you get acclimated to trump being demented. It is acclemented. All right. Trump also defended himself from accusations that hes always rambling. You know, i do the weave. You know what the weave is . I will talk about nine different things and they all come back brilliantly together, and it is like and friends of mine that are like english professors, they say, it is the most brilliant thing ive ever seen. I do this, i do. You see, i do this, the words do this and then you do that, and sometimes that, and like that it is the most brilliant thing. Then these english professors, then they stand up on the desk and they say, oh, Captain My captain. At first me and ethan hawk are kind of rebels, we dont want to do the reading, but in The End we like robin williams. We are back, it is the weave. It is the weave. The weave. The weave. Mike, this gets to the point you were making earlier which is, you know, the criticism you hear from Donald Trump and others is Kamala Harris and the Word Salad in interviews and all of that. Have you stopped and watched a rally . You know what i mean . We are not even talking about the same category of oratory. It is like falling in one of those twisted trails, you know, when you bring your kids to a haunted house, what is going to be in the next room, in the next room, and it is crazy. Like hannibal lecter. Watching the clip from nine years ago when he talked about John Mccain, he has aged. He is an old man. He is. Donald trump is now the old guy in the race, and i think to our point earlier about media coverage, it hasnt quite gotten even close to the attention, trumps age as Bidens Age to, but theyre starting to. Theyre starting to realize he is not the same guy he was. Look, hes in his late 70s now. This is simply facts. The math is what the math is. Were seeing when these two Candidates Harris and trump stand Side By side on a Debate Stage next week it will be very obvious. He will be acclimated. Acclemented. A new Poll Out, more than 3,000 Latino Voters Shows Vice President Kamala Harris with a 27 Point Lead over Donald Trump among people in that demographic, but still underperforming democrats in past elections. The poll commissioned by the largest latino Nonprofit Organization in the country. Joining us with an exclusive early look at the details of the poll, Nbc News correspondent, anchor of Nbc News daily Morgan Radford. What more did you learn . A lot of new takeaways since it is the first Latino Poll this by since Vice President Kamala Harris secured The Partys nomination. This is the u. S. Action fund and they have endorsed the Bidenharris Ticket in may and endorsed harris in july. The Founding Partner the Matt Barretto which worked for the campaign in 2020, which is to say even though it focuses on this, it is still matching up with other polls. Harris has something that the campaign might point to as momentum. If you compare it to the 2020 Exit Poll that margin is still margin than the 33 Point Lead biden had among latinos when he won and a smaller lead than clinton and obama had in 2016 and 2012 respectively. Check this out. Another interesting thing we are finding out for first time, j. D. Vance as trumps Running Mate may be hurting him with latino voters nationally. In fact, he does a few points worse with vance on the ticket than by himself. For harris, on the other hand, the addition of Tim Walz is slightly positive but the effect is more or less the same. Both of those shifts there are within the margin of error, but the big question, what are the top issues for latino voters right now . They are still those pocketbook issues. We are talking about inflation, jobs, the economy, housing, and thats true across all demographic groups, subgroups within thiS Population. So that means thats the same for men, for women, for older voters, Et Cetera. But also what about the key Battleground States . You can actually see if you look at the Battleground States that harris is leading trump among latinos in all of them. Of course, this matters because the number of hispanic eligible voters in each of those states is larger than the margin of victory for either candidate back in 2020. We spoke to latino voters in some of the Battleground States and in florida to really hear what they had to say. Im more enthusiastic now about voting. Because it is a younger candidate, for sure. Just seeing how excited people are, people are saying theyre just as excited as when obama was running in 2008. Im still about the same. Im still about the same. I wasnt going to vote for biden no matter what, just because of the economy and how bad things have gone. When trump waS President he terrified the immigrants, especially hispanics. All they were here is to do is work. Latinos are putting Exclamation Point on housing. I think that there is an opportunity here to reach out, certainly on economic issues, also on responses to Gun Violence, a more balanced and effect to immigration. You heard that keyword, opportunity. It is still early days. Some evidence that theres still room for persuasion among many latino voters. More than half of those polled, 55 , say they still have not been contacted by either party. Fascinating. So, morgan, is there any sense as you put this in some historical context, which is, yes, Kamala Harris is making up ground from where Joe Biden was, but, as you said, it is not where democrats have been typically in terms of their advantage among latino voters. Is there any sense why that has eroded this time around from yearS Past . Yeah, it is interesting. We havent seen from the poll where and how that has eroded, but what we have seen is how different the population looks this time around. Two big takeaways for me. One, how young thiS Population is. So, for example, about a quarter of the population will be voting for the first time ever in this election. But to your point, it also describes about, you know, how they feel about immigration, which is something we always hear associated with latino voters. When you look at the polls it is fifth like compared to Gun Violence and crime. But theres a distinction, willie, between how people got here and what they do once they get here for a lot of voters. Only 24 say they would support finishing the wall, but almost half want to see people protected from deportation if theyve been here working in this country for many years. You are starting to see nuances come out now in the recent poll. A group of voters who could be decisive in thiS President ial election. Nbc news correspondent, Nbc News daily anchor Morgan Radford. Thank you so much. Donny, those numbers show something we hit on in other poles, which is that Kamala Harris is clawing bacK Some of the slippage Joe Biden kind of let go to Donald Trump. Yeah, and as you guys talked earlier and as joe likes to say it is all about trends and the trends is going in the right direction. This is leading up to tuesday. September 10th will be important to voters to see them Side By side and see her use her chops to go after him in a way that will be beneficial. We will be watching. Donny deutsch, good to see you, my friend. The latest from the Middle East aS Protesters in israel continue to call for a Ceasefire Deal following the murder of six hostages in gaza. Open right now because an american man is guaranteed to be in the final of this years u. S. Open. Tiafoe advanced to the finals when his quarterfinal opponent withdrew. Fritz, hours earlier beat the fourth ranked. They are old buddies from the junior days and should be amazing on Friday Night out in queens. And on the womens side, navarro defended champion, coco gauff. Navarro will compete in her first Grand Slam tomorrow. Going back to the men for a minute. It has been since roddick, 21 years ago, there was an american in the u. S. Open final. You will get an american, its either Taylor Fritz or tiafoe, who grew up together in the juniors. Federer retired nadal, all but retired. Hes not done but is fading. Americans have their moment. Tiafoe, an amazing Light Story and an electric player here, and Teeoff Yo is so fun. There may not be a better near City Event than the u. S. Open. Its electric. We were there the other day and its always great no matter who you see and it will be rocking for the two americans. Those Friday Nights, Friday Nights are fun anyway and now you have two americans. For this era, we play great and then get as far as the quarterfinals, and we would start looking at our flights but now the door opened here a little bit. Yeah, Mike Barnicle and i, we always thought there was something special about breakfast at wimbledon, and we couldnt even put the fork in the waffle, but Theres Something about the u. S. Open, youre right. Its electric. You know the spirit of billie jean king, and the John Mcenroe just hang over that place. Mike, it is, Jonathan Lemire is right, other than the independent Counsel Funk playing up at the prohibition, they say the u. S. Open, and it really is, its such a special event. That was some weaving. That is a New York city marathon, two events in the same City And Region together. And where the u. S. Open iS Played out in queens, its only one subway stop past City Stadium where you can see baseball played. Lets not talk about the baseball being played there right now. No, lets not. Coming up, with just nine weeks to go nine weeks before election day. One of our guest says there are three key dynamics to watch. And then we are talking about Joe Bidens approval ratings. They are back up. Well break it all down Coming Up in two minutes. Minuts lets say youre deep in a show or a game or the game. On a train, at home, at work. Okay, maybe not at work. Point is at xfinity. Were constantly engineering new ways to get the entertainment you love to you faster and easier than ever. Thats what i do. Is that Love Island . First debate between Vice President harris and former President Trump is one week away. Apparently in her prep, harris is focusing on The Ways to expose trump. Welcome to Morning Joe. Its wednesday, september 4th. Along with joe, willie and me its september already. It is. Its school time. Fall is coming. Summer is over. Nothing to weep about, just an election straight ahead. Along with joe, willie and me, we have jonathan ma leer, chief white House Correspondent for the New York times, peter baker, and New York times Opinion Columnist joins us. Jonathan, Mike Barnicle and i will certainly tell you that summer is likely over, and as barnicle would say, its time to put the shutters on the windows. The season is over. The Red Sox desperately i mean, the royals that keep losing, and the twins, they all want the Red Sox desperately to get into the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Red Sox will not go along with it and they keep losing as well. I think you guys would even say this has been a pleasant surprise in boston for most of the season, and you project you always do. In the 11th, a blown save last night, and not good with the playoffs looming, jonathan. Oh, i dont mind. I think its clear that the yankees who have had a terrific season, and theres an unreliable closer and the Yankees Cannot have faith in holmes right now, and he gave a walkoff Grand Slam to the texas Rangers Rookie langford. They now have slipped behind the orioles by half a game in the al east, and they will be playing in october, and we will not be, joe. For john to enjoy this you know, The Way you are supposed to do this, and i guess jonathan hes not used to the southern formality. Let me tell you something, the yankees right now are getting themselves ready, and they are resting and setting it up before they go into the kick, and they will win the World Series and thats what you are supposed to do, lower expectations. Going back to the Red Sox, with all of these new polls out oh, we have a lot. We have to keep hearing about major League Baseball i actually have the news here. Willie, the royals have lost seven in a row. Seven in a row. If the Red Sox had gone. 500 over the last seven games, we would be, like, within a game, game and a half of the playoffs. Were 4. 5 back, but again, they just dont want to win it. With 30 games left, four games is not insurmountable. Anything can happen. Jonathan, do you see how easy it would be to be gracious. So jonathan, how do you think about the yankees . They are setting themselves up and getting arms in the mix they are just too good say that. Willie, i will be next to you cheering with you every step of The Way, right . What . That bridge is too far. Thats a little much, joe. Lets get to the news. The latest cnn Ssrs Poll finds Kamala Harris with an advantage over Donald Trump among likely voters in wisconsin, 50 to 44 , and in michigan, up 48 to 43 , and won in Gentleman And Nevada and trump, meanwhile, is up in arizona, 49 to 44 . Interesting. We should note that all these polls fall within the margins of errors. What is the margin of error i guess its five points. Is it five points . I dont know, but hes up six in wisconsin. I thinK Six is outside. I dont know. Willie, these polls began all over the place. Some polls show her ahead, and behind in arizona, and since i got out of politics, its not about the exact number. Its about Trend Lines. If you look at the Trend Lines, things are looking good right now in early september with a Long Way To Go just a snapshot. For kamala. I think what democrats are doing is comparing this to the Parallel Universe in which Joe Biden stayed in the race and he was trailing and those Trend Lines we are talking about were headed in the wrong direction, and Kamala Harris stepped in and reversed that. Yes, shes outside the margin of error, and we always knew some states would be close. Theres a Usa Today Suffolk University Poll, where Kamala Harris leads 48 to 43. In june, trump had a 14point Advantage over President Biden. Again, some growth there for her. On immigration, trump leads harris by just three points now, 50 to 47. Thats within the margin of error. Thats down from trumps 13Point Lead over biden. And on national security, trump 51 over 46. Harris has a Doubledigit Lead on Health Care over trump, up from a Tenpoint Advantage Joe Biden held in june. Again, Trend Lines not just in the polling overall but on specific issues democrats felt like they had to pull back and get closer to Donald Trump. Those margins really shrunk. The Harris Team circulating numbers. They are still down but closed the gaps and they think Theres Room to grow. Back to the Battleground States. The Wisconsin And Michigan Numbers are positive for Harris And Show trends. There are two states where they jump out there. Georgia, pennsylvania. They are onepoint or tie, and she needs to get one of those two. In her campaign, and democratS Privately been noting for a while, her numbers in Pennsylvania Lag behind where they are in wisconsin and michigan in the three Blue Wall states. Thats why shes going to be camping out this coming week, and President Biden was just there on her behalf and will keep going there. Pennsylvania, a huge, huge state for her. If she Cant Win there, she needs to offset that with georgia where she had real enthusiasm, but natural advantages there for a democrat. Its very, very close. Its fascinating, peter baker. Its easy to look at the cynicism displayed by politicians and become cynical yourself. And where trump kills the last security bill, dont vote for it, and i am not talking about you as a reporter, but thinking, oh, they are going to get away with this . You look at the polls and the answer is, no, and the first three years, immigration has been a sore subject at the White House, the Southern Border At Times has been chaotic. You look at the numbers of illegal immigrants that have come over in the first three years. This was a huge issue to Joe Biden. Then they tried to push that bill through and it was Donald Trump and republicans that killed the conservative Border Security Bill. Now you look, Kamala Harris has done exactly what politicians should do, turn weaknesses into strengths. She has run straight at this issue and you see it, a Threepoint Margin. I am curious, are you surprised its only three points or do you see all The Things harris has done up to thiS Point making that make more sense . Yeah, look, this is really fascinating. You are right. If you watch trumps rallies, and i was looking through a bunch of them yesterday for something i am working on, and its striking how much immigration is the core of his message, and everything comes back around to the border and immigration as if he was running a Oneissue Campaign at times. If that issue is not working for him he will have a hard time in the fall. Its fascinating. The three biggest vulnerabilities for the Biden Harris Administration was inflation, immigration and crime, and at some point in their administration were pretty high, and now all three are low. Inflation is back to a normal state, and immigration, the illegal crossings have been reduced, and crime is at the lowest in many years according to the latest statistic. Prices have not come down and that makes it harder for trump to get traction On The Issues if they are not as salient as they once were. At Labor Day at thiS Point in 2016, Hillary Clinton had a 7 lead and went on to lose. Joe biden had a 7Point Lead at thiS Point in 2020 and won by four points. And harris has a 3. 3 lead, so less than Hillary Clinton and significantly less than biden did. She changed the momentum. Its worth remembering how close this is and how much these numbers are, you know, fluid and hard to predict. Yeah, i mean, this is such a close race. Its, in effect, tied, aS Peter said. Its really going to be turnout, turnout, turn other. Donald Trump Yesterday lamenting he got 77 Million votes, more votes than the first time, and he admitted it, i guess, lost by a whisper. Thats because democrats did a better job getting out voters. It sounds obvious, but its true, its always a battle for getting out the vote. I want to go to another issue and a issue that matters a great deal to you, but an issue that has been turned upsidedown since dobbs. I said several times over the past couple of years that i really have not seen an Issue Shift as dramatically as i have seen Abortion Shift in a very long time, and it reminds me of prop 13 in california, 1978, that really signified something happening bigging in 80 with the reagan administration starting. You have Donald Trump flipflopping, now saying hes going to be a champion of womens Reproductive Rights, and you have him saying he will vote against the Sixweek Bill in florida, the Sixweek Ban in florida. Hes shifting, going back and forth. You have the texas race, the University Poll in the senate getting close in part because of abortion, and Ted Cruz leading by two points. Suddenly abortion not mentioned so much by republicans anymore. Talk about the Shifting Landscape and what challenges it poses especially for Donald Trump, and we talked about ae evangelicals falling in line, and its like they transparently shifted to be pro life to give him a vote and gave him a license to do whatever he wanted to do, and that cynical deal evangelicals made with Donald Trump seems to be going up in smoke. It really is. I will tell you what happened, there are a lot of pro life folks that justified supporting Donald Trump because he has the strength and the tenacity to pursue pro life goals more so than establishment republicans or more normal republicans, that he would be stronger, actually, on this issue. Now republicans have ended up with the most watered down pro Life Plank and its functionally more pro choice for the first time in decades, and then Donald Trump flipflopping the florida Sixweek Ban is too strict, and its a mess. If you talked to a smart and reasonable pro life activist, they would not have foreseen would not have foreseen the total public backlash that has been ongoing since dobbs. That has taken an awful lot of people by surprise. The pro Life Movement has not fully reacted to that and Donald Trump is the worst possible standard barrier. How ironic is it that we conservatives, you and i, we are conservatives and trump republicans are not conservatives, and i said it, you dont have to say it, and us conservatives railed for years against pushing things on americans by judicial fiat. Instead of going out and winning on this issue, winning through the hearts and minds of americans, winning democratically in elections and grassroots, the republicans said Donald Trump republicans said we will win at the Supreme Court. To hell with what everybody else thinks, we will win at the Supreme Court and take that as a victory and run with it. What happened . Well, exactly what we conservatives said would happen, the same thing that happened when liberal judgeS Passed things out of line of what mainstream voters, what Middle Class americans wanted. Look, i will say i supported dobbs. I thought roe was wrongly decided and dobbs was rightly decided. What you began to see happen, because you had abandoned anybody you could go to the Big American Middle and make that Pr Life Case and make it in a way you could hear and understand it, and because you went away somebody like that towards a Donald Trump, what happened was the pro Life Movement was not ready for the Post Roe World, and the Post Roe World was going to be democracy, and the people voting and in embracing Donald Trump what happened in many ways is you repelled people that could be voting for you, and you have not the movement is reeling right now. Yeah, it really is. You look before dobbs there were polls. Most polls showed, mika, the plurality of americans supported, what what Mississippis Law was that was challenged that led to dobbs which was a 16week Window for abortions. Which, by The Way, is what most European Countries had at that time, like france, germany and others, about a 16week ban. Now that has changed dramatically, and so much has changed dramatically Post Dobbs and its impacting elections in a dramatic way in places like kansas, kentucky, conservative states. Trump can flipflop all he wants on abortion, but the resounding truth is what he did with the overturning of roe and him taking the credit for that because he can. That resounding truth iS Playing out across america, so i am not sure his Flip Flops show him to be more like The Wizard Of Oz and more lies, and he started out as a democrat. People, i think, as this story plays out for women across america and the men who love them, this is going to be the issue that takes him down. What is so crazy about the flipflopping on abortion and saying hes going to be a champion of Reproductive Rights and hes not going to win over people that are pro choice. All he is going to do is depress the pro life vote, the evangelical vote, so its a loselose for him. Still ahead on Morning Joe, Donald Trump admits he lost the 2020 election. We will play that new sound for you. Plus, the judge denies trumps second request to move his hushMoney Case to federal court. Were back in 90 seconds. Hi, my name is damian clark. If you have both medicare and medicaid, i have some really encouraging news that youll definitely want to hear. Depending on the plans available in your area, you may be eligible to get extra benefits with a Humana Medicare Advantage dualeligible special needS Plan. All these plans include a healthy Options Allowance, a monthly allowance to help pay for eligible groceries, utilities, rent, and overthecounter items. The healthy Options Allowance is loaded onto a Prepaid Card each month. And whatever you dont spend, carries over from each month. Other benefits on these plans include free rides to and from your medical appointments. And our large networks of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies. So, call the number on your screen now and ask about a Humana Medicare Advantage dualeligible special needS Plan. Humana. A more human way to healthcare. And i became president. Then the second time i got millions more votes than i got the first time. I was told if i got ski million, which is what i got the first time, you would win. You cant not win. And i got millions of more votes than that and lost by a whisker. Lost by a whisker. Donald Trump Yesterday admitting he did, in fact, lose the 2020 race to president Joe Biden. You know, john, he said for whatever it has been, four years now again and again, how could i lose when i got 11 Million more votes than i got in 2020. The way you lose is the other person you run against gets more votes than you got. He got 74 Million votes in 2020. The problem was Joe Biden got 81 Million votes, which is how it works. Cant argue there with the math, willie. Former President Trump snuck up a few times and admitted he lost, and he was told by his own staff, sir, you did lose. He even acknowledged theres reporting in my book and others, how could i have lost to Joe Biden. He knows he lost. He pushed the Big Lie for four years that fueled the January 6th insurrection and fueled dozens of criminal charges against him and, of course, we know hundreds have been convicted of rioting there at the capitol. It waS Probably a slip of the tongue yesterday, and i am sure he will go back to pushing the lie again. Ending on a serious note here, hes laying the Ground Work this time around, not suggesting he will lose but if he did, it had to be rigged and something is wrong with it, and many officials fear there will be violence again. We cant imagine a president not conceding the election. And this time hes not in power, and in 2020 he had the levers at his disposal. His aides, his attorney general, bill barr, and others told him his claims that the election was stolen were bs, to put it mildly. And then a judge rejects trumps second attempt to move his case to federal court. He said the united states Supreme Courts immunity ruling in july allows a federal defense for the hushMoney Case. A u. S. District judge rejected both arguments yesterday. In response, trumps attorneys filed a notice of appeal last night. Judge merchan scheduled sentencing on september 18th. Joining us now, former u. S. Attorney and msnbc legal analyst, joyce vance. Always good to see you. Were you surprised by anything you heard yesterday in the rejection by the judge of the appeal from Trumps Team . No. Thats a great way to ask the question, willie. Nothing here is surprising. Trump already tried the Removal Stunt back in july of last year and the court told him no. Trump took an appeal then and abandoned that appeal, and the reason iS Pretty clear. The judge looked at the evidence and facts and concluded the case the manhattan d. A. Brought waS Private conduct and it was a hushMoney Payment to the Porn Star. Hes desperate to stop the sentencing, but the judge said, look, we have already taken a look at this. Theres nothing new here. I wont even give you permission to file these removal papers. Thats the key here. The first time you try to remove a case you can do that automatically, but the second time you need permission from the court. So the fight here is not about the merits of removal. Its about whether or not the judge was correct to say you dont get to do it a second time. The judge supported that decision very precisely, saying Theres Nothing new and this is untimely and you cant do it again, mr. Trump. That was former president Ronald Reagan, nearly three years after leaving office at the dedication of hiS President ial library. His life in illinois is the subject of a new comprehensive biography entitled reagan, his Life And Legend. Max boot joins us now, and hes a Senior Fellow on the conference of foreign relations. I saw somebody who grew up a conservative and loving Ronald Reagan and supports the appeasement of Vladimir Putin and ukraine, and still claims the mantel of Ronald Reagan. Its hard to explain, joe, except to say the republican party has been drifting further to the right since 1964 when goldwater was the nominee, and Ronald Reagan was more to the right than nixon and ford, and those that support trump are very far to the right of Ronald Reagan, so much so that those have been denied as sellouts or rhinos or those that are not really republicans, but The Party has gone so far to the Right Today that the previous generation and folks like Ronald Reagan would not recognize what The Party has become. David french, i will give you the next question. I have to say, though, its fascinating, just like people that call themselves evangelicals dont use it, David French, as a description of their faith but as a cultural marker. We see the same thing with reagan. Those that have no idea what Ronald Reagan stands for are against what 90 of what Ronald Reagan stood for, Free Trade, immigration and standing up to russian aggression. I can go down the list when you talk about being conservative ideally, working with tip oneal tips, theres such a radical difference. An evangelical term is now a phrase. Its amazing, you know, the number of republicans i run into who actually believe and say that trump is an heir to reagan is amazing to me. Theres a really remarkable Con Job taking place in the republican party where many americans still actually believe that the current republican party iS Part of the reagan legacy when its a repudiation of that legacy. This cap between What Trumpism is and who Ronald Reagan was and what he believed is immense. Its surprising to me constantly that ordinary everyday republicans dont often recognize that. One question i would have for max would be, is he seeing any element of the reagan legacy still remnant, still remaining in a way that could be ignited again . Theres certainly aspects of the reagan legacy still around and we need to be fair and objective. The book i wrote is neither a Hit Job or a biography, but its trying to tell the story of reagan in a fair and balanced way. Reagan also has failures and weaknesses, and while theres many more differences than resemblances between reagan and todays republican party, there are also disturbing Trend Lines including reagan did engage in and used fake facts. There were aspects of Reagans Legacy was this is how the republican party got from there to here, and there are differences greater than the similarities, so we have to wrestle with the real reagan and not just with the legend or the myths that have grown up around him. We have played on this show Ronald Reagans Farewell Speech in January Of 1989 where he stopped and very deliberately took a moment to talk about immigration and how important it is to the country and the beauty, as he saw it, in the people coming to the country and becoming americans. What a contrast to Donald Trump who began hiS Political career talking about murders and rapists flowing over the border, and how did that we get to that divide, reagans speech and trump. Reagan did have, i would argue, a somewhat troubling record for civil rights, but he waS Pro immigration throughout his career. In fact, you know, in the 1980 campaign, he was talking about getting rid of the borders between the u. S. And mexico. This was a genesis of nafta. In 1986 he signed an Immigration Bill that legalized millions of undocumented immigrants, and it would be the amnesty bill. He gave a moving tribute to the Way America was built by immigrants. Thats a huge difference. I think there was always an element of the republican party that was uncomfortable with that, and there was always the nativist element of the republican party and it became more pronounced over time. You saw it in the early 2000s when John Mccain and other republicans were trying to get a balanced Immigration Bill and more than a decade ago, Marco Rubio and others were in favor of a balanced Immigration Bill, and that was blown up by opposition from the hard right and basically now its the hard right, the far right, the populist nativist right that has taken over the republican party. Coming up, House Republicans are weighing their options as Donald Trump pushes for a Government Shutdown Fight with passing a Funding Bill. Passing a Funding Bill we planned well for retirement, but i wish we had more cash. You think those two have any idea . That they can sell their Life Insurance Policy for cash . In every president ial election since 1980, women have voted in higher numbers than men and that gap has widened over time. Thats why many researchers are zeroing in on women, particularly Gen Z women, to get a better understanding of what is truly important to them. After all, Gen Z women played a critical role in the 2020 election and this year, millions in this demographic will be eligible to cast their ballots for the very first time. In fact, a new survey from hit strategies is digging into the perspectives and priorities of this key Voting Bloc as we head into the homestretch of this election cycle. Here to discuss, ceo of the Nonprofit Organization all in together, lauren leader. And author of The Book entitled the other how to own your power at work as a woman of color, know your values, daniela pierre bravo. Great to have you back on. So Gen Z women, what are the issues that really stuck out to them that were top priority and what does it tell us about this generation and how they may vote . Yeah, good yeah, good morning, mika. Well, the report showed that there are a lot of different issues like the economy, like access to healthcare, Gun Violence, that are important for Gen Z women voters that have the same importance the the difference in the data is that Gen Z women voters dont have one or two or three big they have a issues. They have a lot of importance across a broad range of other issues, for example, in this report, 36 said that Abortion Access is their top issue. 28 said that racial justice and almost was. And almost 20 Child Care. They said that Child Care was at the top of the whats important to them in terms of those issues. Those numbers were actually higher than those that were reflected by older generations, and what this all means is that this generation, Gen Z women voters, have a high level of Anxiety And Concern over a lot of the issues that affect them and their communities and theyre still not seeing a lot of legislation addressing it. Interesting. So, lauren leader, the answers indicate Gen Z women deeply care about social Justice And Welfare issues as well. What do you make of that . Well, i think it is really interesting that that is, you know, such a personal issue for them and i think it speaks to The Way this generation has been raised in this sort of george floyd moment, thinking the me too movement, Et Cetera. And thats really affected their really psyche. Really affected The Way they think about it. I think it also speaks to why Gen Z is so overwhelmingly leaning to the left, they are just hey are just overwhelmingly voting Democrat And Voting democrat and have in almost every election they have been able to vote in. I think the Child Care issue is fascinating since many of them are probably years away from having kids and they want to know that when they are ready for families, there will be support there. I also thought one thing that stuck out for me in the survey is that while in the sort of overall survey numbers of the women, abortion was not a top issue, but when they were asked what do you think women overall care about most, abortion was the top issue. So, in other words, there is real consciousness that that is a critical factor, even though perhaps for their own lives the economy is more directly for personal. For and, and, daniela, Gen Z women, they also ranked racial justice as a priority, a full 17 percentage points more than millennial women, what do you make of that . Well, first off, Gen Z is the most diverse generation there and is. And i think what this data shows is that racial Justice Isnt just a single issue. It is about the underpinning of a lot of different issues and kind of the intersection of how they see their own race on issues that they feel that are at stake for them. And so, when you talk about the cost of living, access to healthcare, they have seen that marginalized communities, communities of color, all bear the burden more than other and they demographics. And they reflect those and one demographics. And one thing that im really excited about is im going to be moderating a panel of Gen Z leaders for the ywca. Were going to talk about racial justice, were going to explore that and what issues theyre going to actually show up for on election day. And, lauren, what is the opportunity here for democrats as they look at sort of the survey results and how it could play into their message. Well, clearly Gen Z is fundamental, certainly to the democratic coalition, i think republicans obviously need to do more to outreach to young voters, which im not sure they have done an especially good job solutions of. Solutions they want to they want to know, is there going to be support for critical issues like Child Care. How is the future administration going to address issues of Fairness And Equity and equality for all, and i think these are huge opportunities for the campaigns to speak directly to them across all of these issues, not just one, but across all of the issues that matter most to young people, take the message directly to them, engage them, ask them for their vote, treat them like the adults they are, they deserve it. Lauren leader, and know your Values Daniela Pierre bravo, thank you. Daniela mentioned shell be moderating the event in philadelphia this weekend. So look for her coverage, knowyourvalue. Multiple sources familiar with the Vice President s schedule tell Nbc News shell hold another round of Debate Prep while in pittsburgh tomorrow. Gop allies who publicly expressed frustration with mr. TrumpS Personal attacks on harris are urging him to use the debate as an opportunity to refocus on portraying her as a far left candidate, based on position she took in 2019, as a president ial candidate. Jonathan lemire with us for the hour. And joining us, pulitzer and joining us, Pulitzer Prize winning winning author, Doris Kearns God goodwin. So great to goodwin. So great to see you. Before we dig into The Book, ill curious about your thoughts as we turn to six days until thiS Pivotal debate. People used to say debates dont matter until we saw what happened in late june, which changed everything. It will be fascinating to see these two on stage together for the first time. Without a question. I think it will be the most important debate other than the biden dropping out debate and other than the first debate between nixon and kennedy, which started this whole thing. And you just think about the fact that in the old days, campaigns really started on Labor Day. PresidentIal Campaigns. Thats all we had was Labor Day to november. Wouldnt that be nice . Thats what is happening now. How great it would be if we werent doing this for two years during primaries. How is the Harris Campaign approaching this debate . Theyre anxious to get on the stage with him, to provoke him in some ways, to do The Things that many democrats are frustrated Joe Biden didnt do in the previous debate, which is when Donald Trump spews an outright lie to have the correction and the facts there in front of him on the question like immigration, that you torpedos the bill that would have done something about an immigration problem. Thats something that even Joe Bidens fiercest allies acknowledged, he wasnt good anymore at delivering the coherent attack lines, delivering that message in a way that really would have resonated. That even that even delivering the punch that he did in 2020, where he clearly outperformed trump both now, it is times. Now, it is a different story. She is it is true, she has not debated yet this year. This will be a new moment for but her. But she is a prosecutor. We have seen her in the Senate Chamber grilling witnesses this will be there. This will be the first time incidentally the two ever meet face to face. The other occasion would have been Joe Bidens inauguration, which Donald Trump skipped. There is the contrast here, and male, female, the race issue, the race disparate, the fact there is a difference in age now, with trump being the it is candidate. It is going to be such a consequential moment and Harris Team, they feel confident, they want to get out there. I think the most important thing is not only who is going to screw up and who is going to say something that is memorable, which is what we always look at, but how will morale be judged. The person who comes out feeling they win will go forth for the next days and theyll feel they have the wind at their back. Their supporters will feel theyre going to win, im going to vote for them. Thats what happened in 1960, after that debate with nixon, quadrupled crowds for jfk. My husband that night was sure the debate had been won by and kennedy kennedy. And kennedy said, wait, wait, we have time to go. But on the other hand, he realized that morale never in fact, changed. In fact, he was up at that time and never lost it. Because people felt hes going to win. And so i think thats we got to look for that, how the crowds change, how the mood of the country changes after the so debate. So lets bring in Nbc News senior national political reporter sahil kapur. Youre looking at three key dynamics looming over the race to the White House. What are they . Thats right, mika. Labor day is behind us and many americans are just tuning into the president ial race with nine weeks to go until election day. So, here are three things to in the watch. In the final stretch. First, can Kamala Harris sustain her momentum . She has taken a race that Joe Biden was losing all year and turned it into a dead heat. She surged into a lead of several points in national polls, but shes in a statistical tie with Donald Trump in the six or seven Swing States that will decide this now, harris now, harris who is 59 has turned the issue of age from an insurmountable obstacle for democrats into an asset against the 78yearold trump. Shes energized her party and won over americans who are clamoring for a choice other than biden or trump. But, can she sustain this Thats Momentum . Thats hard to do and her campaign is telling supporters she is still the underdog in an attempt to keep everyone energized and on their toes. Second, will the debate next week on September 10th be a Turning Point . The first debate between Biden And Trump was the biggest Turning Point in modern political history. How is this one going to go . Trump will try to regain his footing after hes been somewhat unfocused lately with his allies urging him to pull back on the personal and racial attacks and stay focused on defining harris as a left leaning candidate, based on positions she took in harris 2019. Harris shifted to the center more recently, but trumps goal will be to remind voters of positions she previously took. The debates could come down to which candidate makes a better case on the economy. Thats where harriS Put the focus lately, bringing down the cost of living through her policy plans. And, third, one key demographic to watch, black voters. Lets show a recent poll, harris leads by a few points overall, but what is underneath is more shes interesting. Shes trailing by four points among white voters, better than democrats usually do and not banking on that holding, but shes only at 76 among black voters, after Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both times topped 90 . Democrats say shes got to boost that number, especially with Donald Trump making a play for younger black men. Here is bill burton, former obama campaign aide, said watch black voters, that is the place where i think there is the most opportunity and the most concern. 62 days left until election guys . Wow. 62. Nbcs 62. Nbcs sahil kapur, thank you very much. So, let me ask you, Jonathan Lemire, about the pace of campaigning by Donald Trump. It seems to have slowed down precipitously this in this campaign cycle. Do you do you have any reporting on why hes not getting out there as much . Well, the much slower paced schedule is based on the race he thought he was going to have against President Biden, who was not going to have an aggressive campaign schedule, most cant because they have another job to attend, but also a nod to Bidens Age and energy levels. Trump was happy to match that. Yes, he had a Break Neck Pace in he did 2016. He did for parts of 2020 as well, when the not interrupted by the pandemic, but a much slower cadence this time around. He didnt really participate in the primaries. Didnt debate, just did his bare minimum campaigning in places like iowa, new hampshire, in the the spring. The general election hes gone long stretches, a week or two at a time, without being on the road, because he didnt think he had to. After harris suddenly grabbed the democratic nomination, there is questions starting to be raised among fellow republicans, why isnt trump out there more. And he went a couple of weeks without doing so after the milwaukee convention, again, a convention at which point he thought he was going to win and win in a rout. We saw him out there during the week of the democratic convention in chicago, trump tried some counterprogramming, it didnt go all that well. But he has a very light week this week. It is still a pretty limited hiS Pace. His advisers say after the debate, theyll pick up, well, well see. To thiS Point, when they have said that before, he hasnt followed through. Instead settling doing interviews on cable or friendly podcasts rather than in the Battleground States. And it seems every time he goes out, he makes news. And it is not good. It is not good news for swing voters, not good news for it is not independents. It is not good news for people that want to be comforted and believing they can vote for Donald Trump, without being exhausted, without having the he just disruption. He just doesnt have that. Another thing he doesnt have, and sometimes you see this, and, of course, doris we need to get the numbers out here, but doris can talk about how lbj might have been a drag on humphrey, but any belief in the Trump Campaign to show biden would be a drag on i think Thats Harris . I think thats going away if you look at the latest polls on Joe Bidens approval ratings. His latest approval numbers are out, and Joe Biden, the president , is seeing them steadily rise to levels that he hasnt seen in more than a year. 48 reached in the latest Usa Today Suffolk University Poll is the highest Mark Biden recorded during hiS Presidency. Polling from quinnipiac university found that biden rose from a negative 18 in midjuly to negative 7 last week. And polls from gallup found the president rising from negative 22 last month to negative 10 in so, august. So, back to your point about Donald Trump doing interviews, and doing things out there, it doesnt seem to help him because he always says something that seems either completely antidemocratic or dangerous. So and best to keep him behind closed doors, maybe. Doris, it was always a frustration of the Biden Campaign when there was a Biden Campaign that the recordbreaking stock market, that the jobs numbers, the best jobs numbers over a period of time in 40 years, the strongest dollar in a generation, all of this great economic news was not attaching to Joe Biden or his approval ratings. Now that hes taken himself out of the political arena, and hes simply the president of the united states, i say simply, people suddenly the White House believeS People are now looking, going, wait, the economy is good, now that hes not in the boxing ring, fighting a political fight for hiS Political life, things arent too bad. And, i mean, 48 thats one of the highest approval ratings Joe Biden has seen in a very yeah, time. Yeah, i think it really helped in a certain way after he pulled out and people felt he had put principle over politics that other people could talk about all the accomplishments he made rather than he himself having to do it. Then they began to settle in, almost as if he was already done with the presidency and we were in the legacy part. I think also what is so interesting is that Kamala Harris has been able to project herself as a Change Person and still connected to him. Thats what Humphrey Wasnt able to do as you were saying earlier, he was still tied to Lbj And Lbjs approval ratings as the time went on. I think it is working in both ways for her. She can look younger, she can look like shes a change agent, but she has Joe Biden who is now a more positive force for her. One other Data Point on the economy, as we talk about the dow and we talk about unemployment, and growth and all these other numbers, yesterday, treasury released some data that shows new small business startups, so those are lots of people in this country of all political stripes are up 50 over the last five years. Explosion in applications to start small businesses because people now think inflation is cooling, and this is a good time in this economy, again, thats not a partisan statement, these are hard numbers from the treasury department, americans think this is a good time to start a small business in this economy. Yeah, i mean, thats absolutely great news and, of course, you know, small business fuels our economy. And the fact that small that so many people are engaged and want to get involved and applications are up so much, it goes on with the rest of the numbers and, of course, Jonathan Lemire, the challenge is that there are people that are still struggling with inflation, even though inflation is now down where the fed wants it to be, and the feds ready to cut interest rates. There has been a buildup and so, there still covid. And so, there still is a challenge and i suppose for any candidate, it is always a challenge when you look at all the numbers, which many of them are if not historically strong, they are generati you looK Strong. You look at these numbers. And you still have to worry about the people who are struggling because the price of groceries over the past four or five years have gone up. Right. The economy is strong, but yet costs are still too high. And i think that was a message that the biden White House and when biden was candidate, they struggled with. It went along these lines. The economy is doing great, but we have more work to do. I think it has been interesting, the Harris Team has taken a slightly different approach. She is leading with the, hey, i can feel your pain, things are still too expensive, were going to work on that. And then kind of backs into, hey, heres the good things we have done as we come out of the it iS Pandemic. It is a message at least at thiS Point is resonating. The polls suggest that at least so far harris is not being saddled with the baggage that the economy waS Presenting joe now, biden. Now, again, that could be as we noted on the show time and again, the economy is doing well for most americans, but fair or not, it was seen as a negative for biden. It is not seen as a negative for harris, and we went through the polls earlier today about how she is doing better than biden was and has cut into, really, his cut into trumps advantages on a number of issues, immigration among them, but that includes the economy, which is going to be so central for so many voters. Her messaging is working, much to the frustration of the Trump Team that is trying to say, hey, wait, what you want to say, it is something good, you say it is the Biden Harris Administration, but here, trying to distance yourself, you cant have it both ways, but at least right now voters were hearing her message and they like it. As with many issues, Donald Trump is locked into a perception on a previous set of data that just dont apply doris, anymore. Doris, i want to turn to your outstanding new book called the Leadership Journey how four kids became president and we see them on the cover, upper left, abe lincoln, across to Teddy Roosevelt and down along the bottom fdr and a young lyndon baines johnson. Tell us about The Book. What happened to me really was that ive been so sad about how history is being taught less in courses in high schools and middle schools, and studies show that young middle school kids dont even have a proficiency, eight out of ten cant it is heart breaking, i love history so much. It iS Perspective, it is everything you want to know, it teaches you solace and hope. I thought what happened if i take my four guys, my pals, the guys i studied much of my life, 50 years and start with them when theyre young, before they become icons, before theyre monuments, theyre going to make mistakes, learn, grow. And maybe young people will be able to feel i can become a it is too hard leader. It is too hard to see them as thats too president s. Thats too far out. But i loved history when i was young because my teacher taught me history through biography, through stories, and thats The Thing you really have to do. Thats how you learn about things, if you care about the stories, you are going to care about the dates. Everybody says dates are so i love boring. If i care about the person, i want to know when were they born, when did they do this, when did they do that. Im hoping by telling the stories, stories theyre telling, thats what i think people are hardwired for stories and Theyll Care about these people. And and if they care about them, Theyll Care about becoming you bring leaders. You bring out the humanity, they werent chiselled from granite from the beginning in these great monuments. You talk about how they come from varied backgrounds, the roosevelts, extremely privileged, be a lincoln on the other hand, extreme poverty. You cant tell, there is no single route to that presidency. But what there are the development of a series of qualities. And just think about what they are and just think about what they are when we think about the president ial race. You need humility, the ability to acknowledge errors and learn from your mistakes, you need empathy to understand other peopleS Points of view, you need resilience, you need the ability to somehow be able to accept loss with grace and accept triumph with modesty, you need the ambition that goes to something other than yourself, something larger than yourself, thats what we should be looking for in our candidates for president right now or for any law office. We see them develop in kids and thats what i wanted to watch kids see how do these people develop these emotional qualities that are at the center of leadership. You know, doris, the roosevelts are fascinating to me because they were both seen obviously for good reason as children of Privilege And Everybody knows about fdr and understand polio. Understand what he had to go through when he became older. But i always thought Teddy Roosevelt was fascinating because he was a weak, sickly boy, he was overshadowed by and his elliott. And his older brother. And he actually was a living, Breathing Monument to every parent telling their children, you know, push harder, work harder, take your weaknesses, turn them into your strengths. And thats exactly what a young Teddy Roosevelt did. Yeah, youre absolutely right, joe. He had terrible asthma as a child and as a result, his father was worried he was becoming an invalid. He read books, which was great. His father loved he was reading all the time. He was afraid he was becoming too passive. He said you got to make your body, without the body, the mind cannot go as far as it should. He set up a Home Gym for him. He exercised like crazy and developed a whole set of he was so interests. He was so curious as a little he kid. He loved the bugs, birds, poor insects. Poor elliott the brother had to leave the room because he had all these drawers filled with dissected birds Et Cetera. He was able to keep those curiosities, i think to parents when they see a kid who loves something when theyre young, for him it was birds, conservation becomes his great legacy for fdr it was stamps, he loved stamps and globes and studied countries. If he knew where the stamp came from, he wanted to know where was the country, looked to the encyclopedia britannica, what can i learn about the country and he becomes the World War ii leader who has to understand countries, natural resources and the globe itself. Sometimes those hobbies stay with you rest of your life and they just show curiosity, a great thing you want in your before kid. Before he was this big brash texan, lbj, what kind of upbringing did he have that informed the man he became who, of course, along with the civil rights leaders of the time helped to change history . The interesting thing is he was very smart as a little kid, so his mother said. He could cite the alphabet when he was 2, he quoted poetry at 4, but then school never spoke to he him. He wasnt a good student, to the great dismay of his mother. He went to college and gets to college and he decides, okay, now im going to settle down. I have to find out where is the power, who can be my mentor, so he has got a job outside, collecting garbage, decides ill collect more garbage than anybody in the quickest amount of time, Theyll Notice me. They bring him inside, inside he decides i want to mop outside the president s office, the president has got the power. He is so talkative to the president , the president invites him in the office, he becomes a messenger for the president , next thing you know hes living in the president s house and hes on his way. But it tooK Something and the interesting thing is he took a year off from college and he went to teach at a small mexican american school and the kids were really poor and the kids he could see the scar of prejudice on their faces. He gave part of his salary for soccer games, for baseball but more than games. But more than that, it touched something inside him that said, i want to make life different for them. And thats the beginning. Much later when he gives the great we shall overcome speech on civil rights after selma, he goes back, that was the moment when i wanted to do something for those kids. I didnt have a lot i could do then, but now im president of the united states, he said, before a joint session of congress, i can do something for the kids and grandkids and let me tell you, i have the power now and i intend to use it. So those things that happen in childhood when you instill something in a kid, they can really show themselves later on. A federal judge denied former president Donald Trumps second attempt to move his New York hush Money Case to federal he court. He argued the State Judge presiding over the case Juan Merchan is based against him and the united states Supreme Courts immunity ruling in july offers a valid federal defense for the hush Money Case, that was the argument from trumps a team. A u. S. District judge rejected both of those arguments trumps yesterday. Trumps attorneys filed a notice of appeal late last night. Joining us now, msnbc chief little correspondent and the host of msnbcs the beat, ari first thing melber. First thing we learn when you sit down, you now officially, with all due respect to the Sunday Today mug, top selling item on the nbc store, have the coolest piece of merch on the network, the official the beat genius. Genius. Inspired. Inspired. Well well done. Wait a wait a this was youre bringing it on air, this was just i didnt know that was off were not air. Were not asking what youre doing with the lighter, so thats good. Thats what i want to know. Seriously, what are you asking people to do here . I dont know, you know this was allowed. For some reason they allowed this when the the nbc people, willie, remember when you first got on the air, and somebody on your staff wanted a Way Too Early Bong Pipe, and they said were not going do that, were not going to encourage that, and here we are all these years later and we got lighters. Remember what happened when i tried to burn the script . Yeah. Is the Bong Pipe a new innovation if it combines a bong and a pipe. Bong and pipe. Thats linguistics. Hash pipe, bong, whatever. These are great for candles. I know that candles yeah, we mention candles, any kind of incense. Sure, any of that product. That was my fault, ari. I apologize. Back to the news then. Have i meat you uncomfortable . People wonder what Morning Joe like, this is it. All fair. You should know that by now, lets talk lets talk about the attempt by Donald Trumps team to get this moved out of New York to federal court, rejected pretty resoundingly here. Was there any case to be made this should be moved . Not a strong case, although in fairness, when you have a new Supreme Court decision, you can always make your filings because we talk about precedent, the Immunity Decision that provided a never before idea that certain official Acts Couldnt be prosecuted after you left office is a new ruling. Trumps folks lost. You dont need a lot of legal training to understand the they were pitch. They were arguing that if you paid off someone like, say, stormy daniels, through your lawyer who was later convicted for it, maybe somehow that was an official act of the whatever official president. Whatever official acts are, it aint that. So, lets talk about his hes also trying to get the e. Jean Carroll Settlement tossed out using the same sort of immunity ruling from the supreme is court. Is there any merit there . No. I mean, both of these convictions and one is i want to stress civil, and the other in the New York case on the Money Payments to daniels through cohen was criminal, but both of these findings were force underlying conduct as the lawyers say before Donald Trump became president. Right. Okay. How much interesting. How much is it costing to constantly create these delays . In attorney fees or whatever else . Donald trump spent millions and millions of dollars and the Delay Strategy has been core. We have been normalized to so many things, but it is not normal to have someone running for president who is both a convict in one state and still awaits federal trial at least in the case in d. C. , even if was slightly narrowed by the he raised court. He raised money and then taken money from, you know, his own donors, which is legal, to fund all of this. But the main strategy has not been as we all know to win the cases outright. It has been to try to delay, obfuscate, you know, confuse, and then he hopes if he wins the presidency, many of these cases, the federal ones would likely be lawfully dropped. So, ari, since the beat is not only a place where cigarette lighters are incense. Are passed off you can start a campfire. It is also a place where the law meetS Politics. And the one thing that we have learned and Donald Trump alluded to it a couple of days ago, and hes right, Donald Trump is in court, hiS Poll numbers go up, and i find it curious if youre judge merchan, the last thing youre going to want to do is help Donald Trump in any way, i would guess, you dont want to help somebody that is that is committed a crime, you dont want to do something that somehow is going to help him down the road wipe the slate so, clean. So, obviously hes got to stay focused on the law. And not politics. But i just wonder, i mean, it all goes together. How does the judge respond to what is this. What is the possibility of a delay until after the election, what is the possibility that maybe he gives him a lighter sentence because he doesnt want Donald Trump to play martyr. What are your what are your thoughts, what are your thoughts on this issue . It is a great question. You said give him a lighter sentence or not unlike the lighter i gave willie, i felt we had to come back, you know, double entendre. Doing the weave here. Thats the weave, yes, exactly. There it is. There we feel so square now. You know, joe, ill give you the honest my honest answer is something you know well about from all your extensive experience, you can learn the law, have a Law Degree when youre in congress as you were, dealing with laws constantly, and yet you know there is reality in politics outside the courtroom. Everybody gets that. Eve i think the answer is if you were doing the strictly legally by The Book and literally saying it doesnt matter the person is a candidate, you would go ahead, perhaps with the sentencing on time. I think that is i think that is increasingly unlikely. I dont unlikely. I dont make predictions, but the combination of the Supreme Court case, which does give you a kind of reason to say, hey, we need more time for the filings, Et Cetera and even if it doesnt dismiss it, it doesnt dismiss the whole conviction, there is more time needed and the proximity means i dont think it is out of bounds you could see this further delay than the New York sentencing. And i remind people, in these kind of cases, it often majority of the cases dont necessarily get jail time so, anyway. So, yes, merchan, this judge in New York might look at all of the equities as the lawyers say and go, do you really need to be seen as jumping into this, and timing this weeks up from the general election. It is so fascinating. Same thing about politics, you never know how things break in ive alwayS Politics. Ive always said, my favorite saying came from Illinois Senator Paul simon, who said in politics, sometimes when you win, you lose. Sometimes when you lose, you ultimately win. And here, it is just like when we see Jacks Name jacK Smiths name in the press, when i see jacK Smiths name in the press now, im, like, really . You couldnt have waited to file that until after the election . It is just were so close to the election it going to be fascinating how these judges handle it. I think it is fascinating and i think the political side, you were discussing in the previous segment about how was Joe Bidens approval low or do people dont want him to run again and with that question, which is different from approval, his administration, hiS Policies look perhaps higher approval according to the and country. And likewise with Donald Trump he has many legal problems, people can assess and care about, but the word is out on people have them. People have followed these trials, they have gotten a lot of attention in the News And Pop culture, there is a reason why there are many late Night Punch lines about Donald Trumps legal you get problems. You get in the general election, do the democrats as a political question also, do they want to be still hitting that message again, or have they found more enthusiasm by starting a new conversation about their nominee and their enthusiasm. Right. Or you have Judge Juan Merchan saying youre the one who delayed this to point where it is close to the election and im not going to be pushed around anymore. And there is a strong Counter Argument there. Ari melber, thank you very the the beat 6 00 p. M. Eastern here on msnbc. They got lighters now. Yeah. Next okay. Next theyll have, like, vaping okay. Were things. Okay. Were moving on. You can tell how hip we are, vaping things and Bong Pipes and, yeah. New fears of economic Slowdown Fuel the stocK Selloff after yesterdays market close. All three major u. S. Indices marked their worst day since the global selloff seen in early lets bring august. Lets bring in the cohanker of Cnbcs Squawk Box and New York times columnist andrew Ross Sorkin. There are folks on the board of New York Stock Exchange who should be holding a lighter. One of the reasons i dont invest in stocks hardly ever is because nobody knows nothing. Nobody knows nothing. Yesterday, front page of the Wall Street Journal, bit of a control freak, yesterday the Wall Street Journal rightly reported rightly reported on the story that everybody was saying, hey, hey, the Market Set Record highs, but were all in. The next day the headline is Stocks Selloff on Fears Economy is cooling. You never know whats up, you never know whats down. Yesterday were having comment that people were still investing, despite my personal and skepticism. And now today, one day later, we have got an opposite headline. Look, i think were going to know a lot more on friday when we get the jobs number. Thats the biggest focus of this week because were going to know whether we have good news upon us or whether we have bad news. The hard part is figuring out if bad news is good news and how the federal reserve responds, do they cut by 25 basiS Points, do they cut by 50, is that good or is that bad . Thats on the table. I will say one thing that is so interesting that happened yesterday, though, is you saw this massive falloff in nvidia stock, 300 Billion of loss in one day, a single biggest loss in the history of any single company in one day. It happened, so the department of justice put a subpoena out on nvidia for antitrust questions, that happened after the that story came out after the market closed yesterday. However, talking about information and how people think about things, very well may have been that that news in a sort of Rumor Speculation Kind of way had already been in the Market Yesterday because it is almost impossible to understand how that stock moved as much as it did, it has a huge piece now of the S P and then you saw all the other chipmakers fall in unison. Lots of questions about whether the u. S. Government is going to be looking at Nvidia And Other Chipmakers and exactly what is going on. One thing that nvidia does, they have been hugely successful with their chips, everybody, whether youre amazon, google, youre all trying to buy up as many nvidia chips as you humanly can. One thing they have done is they also set them up on specific nvidia racks so that it becomes harder over time to start to try to use competitors. And there are not a lot of competitors that are nearly as successful as nvidia. Im sure theyre also calling up the department of justice saying, hey, can you help us here, we dont think this is a competitive market. Nvidia has been obviously one of the it is just been such a hot stock, but, man, it is also yesterday, volatile. Yesterday, losing almost 10 . It could go up 10 today. It is up and down and up and i want to down. I want to talk about a story also in the Wall Street Journal that willie and i were discussing earlier, small business startups, just exploded over the past five years, and as we all know, small businesses here the journal says it reshapes the u. S. Economy, but small businesses have always been the Engine Driver of the at least economy. At least during our lifetime. Look, you cant be a big business without having started a small business. Thats what Vice President harris recognizes, thats what she is suggesting today with this new program that she iS Proposing effectively to create a 50,000 deduction for small businesses up from 5,000. She clearly wants to create something on the order of 25 Million new small businesses in she wins over the course of her first term, thats what were hearing in terms of what that plan is. Now, the first thing to suggest is nobody starts a small business because they say to themselves, there is a 50,000 tax deduction, it is not a race to start the new company because of the deduction, but one thing that happens to small businesses early on, especially, is it is tough going. And 5,000 deduction doesnt necessarily get you there, when even if you have some profits and you need to reinvest in the company, and so, this, i think, extends the Opportunity Set for small companies that want to become big companies to get there because too often small companies become even smaller companies when they dont work. So, the question is does this give them a little bit more room to create success and i think thats what shes trying to do with thiS Program and i think a lot of small Business Owners will think this gives them a also, chance. Also, gives them a chance to hire more people earlier in the process because of it. Right. One of The Things i think it is a brilliant political move, only because it is something i said for the past 20 years, i never understood why democrats or republicans didnt focus on tax increases whether it was on billionaires, multinational corporations, and so they werent if theyre getting too much of a break, and if you look at billionaires and multinational corporations, you look at Income Redistribution over the past 30, 40 years it on from Middle Class to the richest of the rich. And i always wondered why dont they propose tax cuts for small businesses, for entrepreneurs, for startups, from the people that fuel the economy and that way people wont look at them as tax and spend democrats or, you know, liberal republicans. Well, i dont disagree with you. The question is when you become a successful entrepreneur and from a small business to being a big business, all of a sudden you also have now access to capital which people are now using to lobby against higher taxes once they get to those higher tax brackets. That, to me, unto itself, is one of the reasons we havent really dealt with creating a fairer tax system. Youre right, you youre right, you want to deal with it at the bottom end so we have more people starting small businesses, but the only way this gets solved in a truly fair way is also dealing with taxes on the upper end and thats really where there is this whole other debate and that debate is controlled by money. Yeah. Lobbyists always win. They always win. Even in Tax Reform bills that have gone through a democratic ways and means committee, at The End of the day, the lobbyists for the billionaires, for the multinational corporations always wear down both sides and get what they want. Cnbcs andrew Ross Sorkin, thank you very much. Well see you tomorrow. Thank you. And Coming Up, a new religious coalition is backing Kamala Harris. And according to our next guest, it could mean breaking the Stronghold Maga forces have on many of the countrys evangelical voters. That is straight ahead on Morning Joe. Ad on Morning Joe. First, first, i want to come to you as someone who loves the church. I was raised up in the faith at my local church. I was raised strict independent fundamental baptist. Grew up at Church Camp in my i teens. I was a republican voter for much of my adult life. Im a christian, but im also a legislator. All of us here are coming from different standpoints, different vantage points of our should have a hearing in a true democracy. Part of a recent group event, with members explaining their enthusiasm for the Vice President s candidacy. Our next group is among a growing number of people in the evangelical community voicing support for the democratic ticket. We have the Executive Director of vote common good, an organization that mobilizes christian voters. I want to read from a post you wrote titled how ive been convincing christians they dont have to vote republican and you write, quote, on the trail in 2020, 2022 and this year, ive gleaned the reason many evangelical and christian voters ultimately leave trump. His obvious lack of kindness. A poll that my Organization Vote common good commission in 2020 showed in Swing States, trumps lack of kindness was driving evangelical and catholic voters away, in large enough numbers to potentially effect the outcome of the election. Biden did better than Hillary Clinton did with evangelical voters, and if we come together and dont leave these folks to trump, i think itS Possible for harris to receive the highest level of evangelical support since Jimmy Carter got roughly half the evangelical vote in 1976. If that were to happen, it would break the back of the Maga Movement. Ill let you explain a little more about what youre Seeing And Hearing on the trail, and thiS Phenomenon weve been talking about for almost a decade where some evangelicals say were not voting for a saint, were voting for president , somebody that will carry out what we hope hell carry out. In some cases he did that, appointing the Supreme Court justices. Are you seeing cracks now . Weve been seeing the cracks since after Donald Trumps election in 2016. He received nearly 81 of white evangelical support in 2016. But that went up from the summer of 2016 when in july he was down in the 30 range with evangelicals. But then he picked mike pence, he became a validater and then promised to put evangelicals in his cabinet and evangelicals rallied around Donald Trump. Almost immediately after that election, many of them regretted that decision and started to rethink their commitment to Donald Trump. So our group, vote common good, along with a lot of other groups, started to organize. In 2018 we launched a Bus Tour. That Bus Tour ran in 2018, 2020, 2022, and is on the road again this year. And were talking to evangelical voters, many of whom have already had their minds changed. You know, a lot of people ask us, how do you go out and change the minds of these evangelicals . The truth of it is, we dont feel like we have to change their minds. Their minds have already started changing. To be blunt, Donald Trump is like a Selfcleaning Oven who does all the work for you, if you want to know who hes going to be and how hes going to perform aS President. For a lot of voters, theyre not comfortable supporting him any longer. And we know that Donald Trump may still receive 70 or 72 of evangelical support, which to someone like me seems entirely too high. But he Cant Win the Swing States of wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania, georgia, even arizona, if he doesnt receive near 80 of evangelical support from white evangelical voters. You know, pastor, ive been in politics one way or the other the past 30 years or so, and i always found people respectful. And i will say even and ive said it on the air, too, that most trump supporters are respectful when walking through airports or going to baseball games. But a lot of times there are a few that arent. And i always tell this story because its so shocking, because i grew up in the baptist church, the baptist church and, you know, georgia and meridian, mississippi, mainly in pensacola, florida, and a lot of my friends, ill be honest with you, that i grew up with, that i went to church with three times a week, four times a week, that i did vacation bible school with, that i went to ridgecrest with, i could go on and on, i do not recognize now. And i always tell this story, and tim alberta had basically the same story, but i was saying goodbye to my mom at her funeral and her casket was two feet behind me, and somebody i grew up with in church, who knew my mom, my family, instead of giving me condolences, came up to me and said, i am so concerned youre going to hell, because youre not and i cut her off. I said, if youre about to say because im not supporting Donald Trump, i want you to know, im going to pray to Jesus Tonight that he will forgive you and that youll find your way, because you are so lost. You are so lost, to be doing that at this moment. So, i tell you that, tim alberta has told these stories, people that grew up in the church. I want to know, because i still dont know what has happened to my friends. Its not about politics. This is not about issues. This is about substituting the gospel of Jesus Christ for a failed reality tv talK Show host. I just dont understand it. Please explain. Joe, im an avid watcher of the show, so i feel like ive followed your religious journey, and its very similar to other peoples experiences. For a lot of people, their religious identity and their political identity came as a package deal. And they think that deepening into their faith means deepening into their political identity. But just enough people, 5 to 15 of these evangelicals, especially in the Swing States where it really matters, want to separate those two identities because theyve seen the same thing youve described. Weve all seen it. We wonder whats happened to these people. Ive been a pastor for my entire adult life and ive seen it with people who have been part of my church. And i wonder, what has happened to them . But i also know theres a whole other group of people who have moved the other direction. Theyve deepened into their faith and separated their political identity from their religious identity. Those are the people that we can focus in the next 62 days to invite them to consider voting for a democrat. Here is what you probably know to be true, joe, a lot of these people have never met a democrat, not a politician, maybe not even a democratic voter. They literally dont know these people and theyve been told all kinds of lies about them. And once you introduce them to a person of faith like myself and other people who travel with us, we travel in a big bus that says, faith, hope and love, supporting democracy on election day, and thats the kind of thing that people come up and they feel confused. They see faith, hope, and love, and they know thats evangelical talk, but then they see supporting democracy for all on election day, and they think, thats not how we republicans speak about this. And some people are turned off, but so many people are saying, thank you for finally speaking out. Because when the 70 are screaming loudly, that other 30 need to also stand up. And, frankly, a lot of evangelicals just get really quiet if theyre not going to support Donald Trump, because of The Things youve described. I get them, too. I was on Fox News the other day and my Email Box is full of people with the same reminders about what they consider to be my ultimate outcome. So this is real in peoples lives. We want to do everything we can to encourage people to find what we call exceptional candidates, and we mean this, the kind of candidate that they would make an exception for. They might say, i would never vote for a democrat, but i just might vote for that Rebecca Cook in wisconsin, i just might vote for the candidate this time who has a d beside their name. And we think Kamala Harris has the possibility to make that big shift. If she can pull 25 or 30 of white evangelicals in the Swing States, Donald Trump not only Cant Win, the Maga Movement doesnt have a future. For those people out there that are watching that are thinking, well, this is only talk of left wing, pastors, radical priests, none other than Tim Keller near The End of his life said, i no longer call myself an evangelical because thats more of a political identify. Executive director of vote common good, pastor, thank you so much for being with us. Thanks for having me. And his Opinion Piece is available to read online now at msnbc. Com.
