Harris campaign, the Vice President and her Running Mate holding Labor Day events in three different Battleground States today. So how will those events set the tone for the Campaigns Stretch Run . And were Smack Dab in the middle of what is believed to be the busiest Labor Day Travel Period ever. But heat and Heavy Rain could make it a rough road for travellers in some parts of the country. Well have the latest. But we start with the dramatic escalation of public fury in israel where half A Million people poured into the streets as part of a general strike venting Anger And Grief over the killing of six hostages by hamas. But many are also blaming the israel government and prime Minister Netanyahu specifically for failing to reach a deal that would have brought them home safely. The funeral for one of those hostages, hersh goldbergpollin, was held today in jerusalem with thousands of mourners gathered outside. Back here in new york city, the father of another hostage, eddan alexander, told a crowd of protests, the focus must be on saving the 101 people still being held. None of this has to happen. I would like to call President Biden to tell prime Minister Netanyahu, do not delay the deal. [ applause ] do the deal now. Do the deal now. I want to bring in Matt Bradley joining us from Tel Aviv and Monica Alba is covering the white House And Jack jacobs is a medal of Honor Recipient and a Military Analyst of highesteem. So welcome to you all. What happened today after yesterdays powerful demonstrations involving half A Million across the entire country of israel . Reporter well, yesterday, the momentum continued. We saw what was a general strike today. And while it didnt bring the country to its knees, which was the intention of the organizers, they wanted to see the system arrested and stopped to pile pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu and the top government to seal the deal, one of the chants that we were hearing in these protests. We saw what looked more like a symbolic effort. We were still seeing traffic circulating, work was going on. We saw that the airport in Tel Aviv, it was still more or less operating even though it was supposed to halt for a few hours and there was a judge that ordered that the strike had to stop at 2 30 p. M. Local time this afternoon. Because there wasnt enough time notice. But this was still a highly effective Resident Protest and it did leave an impact and it is yet to be seen whether well hear more from the government. But we did see as you mentioned that funeral in Jerusalem Today for herch goldbergpollin, one the most highprofile of the hostages and of The Americans because of his parents outspoken activist, speaking at the Democratic National Convention just last week. And we heard from his father who, while we did hear this incredibly gutwrenching emogeal pleas about this young man hersh, we also heard a bit of politics. Here is john speaking about his son. For 330 days, my mom and i saw the proverbial stone that we could turn over to save you. Maybe, just maybe, your death is the fuel will bring home the remaining 101 hostages. Reporter now, in away the parents have already gotten their wish. Because when we were out there last night for hours and hours, yes, everybody was very angry with hamas, the terrorist group they are accused of having killed these young people, all of them under the age of 40. They were extremely angry at netanyahu who they say has deliberately delayed a deal that would free the remaining hostages and that is why we see them continuing the protests into today. This is grief, but it is very, very political. Alex. And listen, we were covering this over the weekend, particularly yesterday, with you, matt and with regard to anger. It was spilling out into the streets. We were with you for hours in that one contained area over where there were thousands upon thousands. But when it went into the streets, We Saw a lot of interaction, arrests, people demonstrators being dragged away by police. Any of that kind of activity between the two today, demonstrators and police . Reporter i havent heard that much of that. We could see more this evening when night falls. That is when we see this kind of thing happening. This is not rare for the protests even by the Family Members of the hostages and their supporters. These have often turned violent over the last year since the October 7th attacks. So, you know, it really does show kind of a catharsis of venting of frustration into violence and you will this is just shrouded in grief and despair. It is so very political and so much about the Government Opposition and i have to tell you, this starts before the October 7th attacks. This is only cleaved open a lot of fissures there were there before October 7th. A lot of the properties last summer in opposition to netanyahu and his judicial reforms, were seeing a lot of the same faces and expressions of anger. This is a similar sort of political group and it fall as long the same lines that are familiar Culture Wars here in israel. Alex. Matt bradley, thank you so much for that reporting. Lets get to you, colonel jacobs. Netanyahu said that the killing of the six hostages proves hamas doesnt want a deal. That said, do you get a sense that the public protests are going to force his hand to make one . It may very well be the case. Weve heard, it is worth repeating, that dissatisfaction with netanyahu and his policies predates this incident, predates even October 7th. And one of the principle reasons that netanyahu is still in the office is because of his support from far right parties, dozens of Political Parties in israel. A lot of Political Parties. But hes propped up by the far right who insists on the destruction of hamas. Remember that right after October 7th, netanyahu said that the objective was the complete destruction of hamas. In extremely difficult labor intensive and time intensive tasks even if it were possible and it would include israeli occupation, longterm occupation of gaza. Israel has tried that before and didnt like it and it didnt work. So increasing dissatisfaction that has coalesced around the loss of the hostages. Let me play the part of what a father told Jose Diaz Balart about Netanyahus Involvement in all of this. The netanyahu government has been prioritizing this fantastic of total victory over hamas and selling it to their own base in israel. This is not about national security. Everyone in israel, almost everyone in israel understands that. This is about the fulfillment of a political agenda. And the retention of political power by netanyahus far right coalition. Because it begins the question that has to be raised, could the ideology behind hamas ever be fully eradicated. So my question is do you agree first of all with what that father said and who is driving Netanyahus Strategy right now . Well one should never say never or always because it is never the case to Put It into a phrase. Destroying hamas or indeed any of the proxies fueled by irans desire to destroy israel and take control of the entire region is extremely difficult if not impossible. So, the objective of complete destruction of hamas probably is not going to happen any time soon. And it certainly is not going to happen under the ages of netanyahu government. But it is extremely difficult, also, to get a government together in israel that could agree on anything that anything more tactical than the strategic objective of saving israels security. Israel lives in a very, very difficult and dangerous neighborhood. Even the elimination of hamas is not going to make israel safe. Dont forget that weve got in the north, hezbollah, an extremely powerful organization fueled by supplied by, advised by, armed by iran. That region is extremely difficult. Even if you were to eliminate hamas, it would not guarantee Israels Safety in the region, alex. So monica, i know we heard from the president on this not too long ago. What did he say. He was returned from a weekend in delaware and he did speak to a lot of the very pressing questions about whether wr this goes from here and whether there is any Reality Check on a potential deal or whether these deaths, these tragic losses of life of these hostages over the weekend further complicate that. Or is it something that ignites this final Momentum And Push that has been needed to close the gaps in these last stages. Which, for months, the biden administration has said theyre very close, that theyre just completion of an agreement and in The End there is something that delays it. But here is more of what the president had to say about the status of those talks and whether he believes prime Minister Netanyahu is doing enough. In the final Hostage Deal . Were very close to that. What makes you think that this deal will be successful in the way that the other deals were not . Hope springs eternal. Mr. President, do you think it is time for prime Minister Netanyahu to do more on this issue . Do you think hes doing enough . No. Mr. President, what is youre reaction to the demonstrations across israel . Im going to get the detail when i walk in and ill talk after that. Okay. Do you have a message for the hostage families, sir. Yes, ive spoken to the american hostages and his Mom And Dad and were not giving up. Reporter both President Biden and harris spoke with the family yesterday. We know that Jake Sullivan spoke virtually with some of the other american hostage families, who are also just so desperate for information about their Loved Ones and im told, alex, that the administration is really been in very close touch with the key Negotiating Partners in israel, in Egypt And Qatar and they are hopeful that something could come together and that is how the president Put It, hope springs eternal. Hes tried to be optimistic, but in reality this diplomatic agreement and the Ceasefire And Release for the remaining hostages have been difficult and illusive and plagued by politics. And he is led were not giving up. Which led me to say theyre working on a final Hostage Deal. The Washington Post reports if that deal doesnt work, the u. S. Could walk away from negotiations. Is that a real possibility . Do you think the prospect of that would force everyone to the table . Well i dont think it is going to force either party to come to a deal. Just the prospect of the united states walking away from being involved in the negotiations. The real the crux of the problem, there are a lot of disagreements here. But one of them, the principle one, resolves around the israeli insistence that it be able to control the border with the Gaza Border with egypt to make sure that iran doesnt continue to ship people, material, ammunition, and weapons into gaza. And hamas has said absolutely not, were not going to permit that. That is the principle there are a lot of other sticking points but they could be resolved, but israeli control of Ingress And E gress is a sticking point. Other wise, no. Thank you for that. And Monica Alba. Appreciate you both. So in 90 seconds, Kamala Harris spending her Labor Day trying to win over laborers. What she could expect when she arrives in detroit later on this afternoon. That is after this. That is after this so this is pickleball . Its basically tennis for babies, but for adults. It should be called wiffle tennis. Pickle yeah, aw whoo these guys are intense. Whatever the stage, businesses that grow grow with shopify. On this Labor Day, the Harris Campaign is focusing on labor. Vice president harris and Governor Walz will crisscross the country today. Harris will kick off her day in detroit, before joining President Biden in pittsburgh later. And while walz makes stops in st. Paul, minnesota and milwaukee. Harris will have major support in michigan as she joined by governor gretchen whitner. And Laura Barrett is reporting from detroit and joining us victoria defrancisco devoto. Welcome to you both. So maura, what is the Harris Campaign goal with todays events . Reporter well, as you know, the Union Vote is going to be incredibly important in this election. Both parties really vying for that support. Especially in the Battleground States where Union Household voters make up more of a share that in other states than in the national average. So were also seeing early indications that harris is leading in polling when it comes to Union Households. About a 10 lead over Donald Trump. And so that is something theyre looking to carry through and weve seen several endorsements from Union Leadership but i think it is important to highlight that Union Leadership doesnt identify with all of the Union Members. So that is what harris is coming out to detroit to start the day and then closing out the day in pennsylvania. Posting a preview of what we might hear from her on x on Social Media earlier saying that she wants to remind people that as president she would stand with workers because when unions are strong, the middle class is strong and when the middle class is strong, america is strong. So tim walz, her Vice President ial candidate, emphasizing the fact that he was also a former Union Member as a former educator and really emphasizing the middle class values so that is something that well see from the Harris Campaign going forward throughout the Day Today and sidebyside next to President Biden in pittsburgh later today, maybe foreshadowing what well see from the campaign in terms of how biden will support the campaign in this final stretch. Labor day marking the unofficial start to the Campaign Season when the average american voter really tunes in. So that is why were seeing the blitz across the Battle Ground State as she looked to harness in the key voters and some of which i spoke in the line coming in this morning, several highlighting the importance of similar values they see as workeshes with the Harris Campaign, as well as Reproductive Rights and wee seeing the campaign take off on a Bus Tour later on this week to highlight the Reproductive Rights. So there is issues that these voters care about. Some that bounce back between those that favor Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. And that is why were going to see this huge focus going forward in the next 53 days. And that Bus Tour is going to kick off in palm beach, the home of Donald Trump. So that is an interesting point. So, lets talk numbers. Michigan had a 564,000 Union Members in 2023. This a state that biden won by 154,000 votes in 2020. Biden called himself the most prounion president in history. How important is it for harris to pick up that mantel to organize their support. Extremely critical. And we see this in the tour that they are doing over the today and i think this is going to be a theme that continues. Because what we see here isnt just a campaign stop, but alex, it is reminding folks of the Democratic Party with union. Because what weve seen over the last couple of years is Donald Trump very clearly trying to coax those voters over to the Republican Party. Saying, hey, lets connect on other issues, lets connect on cultural and moral and social issues. So he has been trying to chip away at the long established relationship the democrats have had with the union. So, this is why it is so important not just because of the voting might, but because of what weve seen over the past couple of years with Regards Toen to end roads with the Republican Party. Lets talk about controversy over the accusations that trump tried to politicize that trump to arlington national cemetery. Now some are bringing accusations against biden and Vice President harris. They wanted trump there and to take the photos. Who the family invited was Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Joe biden was sitting at a beach and kpars was four miles away. Ten minutes she could have gone to the cemetery and honored the sacrifice of those young men and women but she hasnt. President Biden And Harris were invited by some of the Family Members. They not only didnt come, they didnt even respond to that invitation. Okay, first lets remind viewers the controversial is not about Donald Trump being invited to arlington. It is about breaking forward law by taking photos and videos and publicizing them. And for the record, biden and the Vice President was not invite the either. What do you mean about this Shifting Blame and trying to cover up the actual issue . This is incredibly serious, alex. In terms of honoring our armed services, this is really the core of who we are as americans and ideally you would want this to be one of the places that politics is not played that it is not a republican or a democratic issue. But weve seen in the past, it has become publicized and politicized and what is most important here is for the democrats to hold steady, to put forward what they believe in, which is not just supporting the military, but supporting veterans because it is a wholistic stance that you have to put forward. And if the Republican Party wants to point fingers and try to deflect blame, at The End of the day, the True Story speaks for itself. Okay. Northeast and New England looking good and the south that were concerned about Heavy Rain. It is been raining for days. We have two systems working together. This frontal system parked in the south and an area of low pressure that is funneling in gulf moisture, so heavy downpours. Were expecting the heavy downpours, two to three inches per hour. And this rain extends from texas along the Gulf Coast up into florida from the carolinas. Likely in houston and also in tampa but could be see some delays in charlotte, dallas, New Orleans and also miami and Orlando Xd and well see this continues on tuesday as well. If youre driving, well see the wet roadways and the Windshield Wipers are going along fast because along I20 And I10 and Flash Flooding that will continue throughout most of the week. Look at the rest of the country though, nice and dry in the northern plains. It will be warm with teams into the 80s and 90s. The Upper Midwest looking good. The Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley into the forth East Feeling like fall in New England. Were going to see temperatures in the 60s and 70s and night time lows dropping into the 50s. It will be toasty in the Great Basin and the inner mountain west. Not as bad as it is in the pacific southwest. And well heat up wednesday into friday. Tropical downpours and that is what were concerning about. Staying in place with the flood risk. It is the Park Frontal System that is tacked into place. Comfortable throughout the nation and the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. Could see rain throughout the rockies and in the southwest is where wee see the temperatures soaring. By friday, Fire Concerns continuing throughout the west. Seasonal temperatures in the South Central states and then were looking at that rain moving off to the east. So now were talking about portions of the southeast with really Heavy Rain and then some later rain up through the mid atlantic. And today in texas, where you see this slight risk, San Angelo and port stockton, were concerned about Flash Flooding. If you see ponding on the roadways you want to turn around. We could see several inches of rain. Thank you. Melissa parra is reporting from miami beach, florida. Where rain has put a damper on the weekend. But it doesnt look too bad right now. Hes calling on The State to prevent laws from Smoking Marijuana in public, so quote, we do not smell marijuana everywhere we go. And this new stance on the issue has the kamala Harris Campaign calling him out for his quote, brazen flipflops saying theyre wholly at ods with how he governed as president. And so lets talk about his stance on legalizing marijuana. What has been the Roller Coaster Ride of that. This is ultimately Donald Trump. When he was in the white house. On one hand back in 2018, he suggested he was behind what was a bipartisan bill in the senate that would prevent the federal government from intervening in States Legalization efforts. But at the same time, he had a Department Of Justice that was actively seeking to sue states ordered to enforce federal marijuana laws. So really he said one thing but his Department Of Justice was doing another. And so hes now, as a florida voter, left with this Refrn End um and he suggested he will get on board with it because a majority of the electorate supports it but he states that he wants more stringent laws. So this is Donald Trump finding himself in the middle of what is a little bit more distorted policy position. Okay. Ron desantis, governor The State. Hes against this. Right. Which brings to question the differences between them right now. What is their relationship like . This is a relationship where Ron Desantis, has endorsed Donald Trump, after dropping out of the president ial race. And Donald Trump has said, im glad to have Ron Desantis back on board. But notice who has not been on a stage with Donald Trump ever since that, for two months from the election, Ron Desantis. And this was attention because Donald Trump pushed back against the Sixweek Abortion Ban and now he said he will vote to make it 24 weeks. So that stays in play. Right and now hes pushing back against the Ron Desantis position on the Marijuana Legalization referendum, because like a lot of republicans, they have been a critic of the legalized Marijuana Effort and now Donald Trump is on the other side and now they are at odds. Could i ask you, anecdotally covering Donald Trump and like, do you get a sense there is a Momentum Building in the Democratic Party, the democrats within florida thanks to Kamala Harris being at the top of the ticket or not . Is it still florida country. I have a hard time not seeing Donald Trump winning The State of florida. But you always have a sense there that there is at least enough democrats to make a good run at any one of those major bids. Whether it be for governor or for senate or for president. But ultimately mobilizing the new number of democrats that are necessary, has been that outstanding question and they have felt good about some of the candidates theyve had down ballot in recent years. They have not been able to get there. But could this time be different, and is there frustration over the governance of the republicans in Tallahassee And Frustration over Donald Trump and i think democrats, Jen Omalley Dillon said that florida was not in play. But the question here is democrats would be eager to expand the map and put sp resources there. It has yet to be categorized as a swing tate. Thank you for being here.
