A Rousing Welcome for Vice President Kamala Harris and governor Tim Walz as they Barn Storm through rural jaers in the State Of Georgia amid a massive surge in Voter Registrations among black women. Plus, Senator Amy Klobuchar joins me on the powerful new Harris Ad targeting trumps authoritarian plans as written in his detailed blueprint, project 2025. And we begin tonight with just 69 days to go until Election Day. And democrats have georgia on their minds. Today Vice President Kamala Harris and governor Tim Walz kicked off a Bus Tour through the southern part of the state. Starting with a visit to a high school, where the vp spoke with the marching band. Your generation, all that you guys stand for, everything you have at stake, is what is going to propel our country into the next era of what we can do and what we can be. You are showing what hard work can achieve, what discipline can achieve, what teamwork can achieve. And thats the stuff of great leadership. Donald trump could never. They also met with voters at a Barbecue Restaurant in the city of savannah. That is where harris will be holding a solo rally tomorrow. Now Vice President harris is no stranger to the peach state. Shes visited Georgia Seven Times this year alone. And, of course, held that rally earlier this month in atlanta featuring megan thee stallion. But this trip the different because the areas that vp Harris And Governor walz are visiting are spots the democratic candidates typically ignore. In fact, the last time a democratic nominee spent significant time campaigning in southern georgia, it was Bill Clinton in 1992. This is part of a larger strategy from the harris walz campaign, they are recognizing in order to win this critical Battleground State in november, they cant just Rally Metro atlantas bluest countries to turn out. They also have to court voters in suburban and rural communities to make in roads, however small in republican strongholds. One of harris top deputies told the atlanta journal constitution, quote, these are the types of places where you might not be able to go from losing 9010 or you might not be able to go from losing 9010 to winning them, but you can absolutely stave off a bigger defeat. And in georgia where President Biden won by just under 12,000 votes in 2020, every vote clearly matters. This is the state where Donald Trump remains under criminal indictment for his efforts to overturn that win, including asking the Secretary Of State to commit a literal felony while they were both being recorded. Its also a state where three Pro Trump members of Georgia State Election board are now actively adopting new certification rules that officials in both parties warn could soon could sew Misinformation And Cause chaos in november. And joining me now is dean of Columbia School of Journalism And Msnbc contributor, natasha brown, cofounder of the black Voters Matter Fund and the southern black girls and womens consortium. Former Senator Doug jones, center for american progress. And paul, Founder And Ceo of independent veterans of america. Thank you all for being here. Natasha, i want to go to you first. Its kind of a tale of two stories in the State Of Georgia. The Voter Registration numbers in georgia are huge, but Voter Registration writ large, 175 increase in black women 18 to 29, hispanic women 18 to 29, 149. 7 increase in Voter Registrations across the states, black women in general 98. 4. Black americans 85. 8 and women in general 18 to 29 83. 7 . In and out of georgia just phenomenally historic Voter Registration increases. But then in georgia you also have this headline. Pro Trump Georgia officials they wrote new rules to deny election results. They have emails showing Georgia State Election Board Member worked with trump supporters to write rules allowing counties to refuse to certify election results. Somebody who does this thing for a living, getting voters to register and getting them to turn out, are you more on the idea that so many people are registered or concerned that republicans are determined to stop them from actually voting or just steal the election . Let me say this, i am cautiously optimistic that i believe is that georgias absolutely afraid that what were seeing when we see these numbers of Voter Registration, high Voter Registration with women, that means that the Opportunity And Momentum is there. Its a matter of mobilization but its not just around the vote. What we the way i see it is three phases. Theres a phase around protecting and making sure people get out and mobilize the vote but theres also we have to make to protect that vote because i believe theres a strategy from trump, part of the reason why i think he has not been campaigning really hard is because i think that theres an attempt that he has that he wants to literally try to outinfuse this idea of doubt and the process of who voted and the certification process. This month alone, theres been two laws passed in georgia that essentially make the republicans power empowers them, if they dont like the results they can channel the certification. And it can all draw out to expand on election night, if its a close election, theres problems. Thats why its really important why Vice President Kamala Harris to go out in rural areas so you can actually impact and shave off that vote. We saw the same thing happen in the Biden Election. The part of the Biden Election you looked while many of those republican counties did not flip to become democratic counties, you saw that shave of difference in those counties that the republicans did not just sweep those counties and ultimately led to the outcome We Saw where biden won the State Of Georgia. Yeah. The way we talk about rural communities is we sort of paint them white. Right . But rural communities are very diverse, latino voters out there, black voters out there, asianamericans. There are a lot of people who live in Rural America who people dont think about. How should we be thinking about this . This is a combination of an Excitement Election but also still georgia is one of the most suppressive states in the country. So listen, here is whats key and why the work that latasha has been doing is so important. If you wanted to understand Georgia Politics. I lived in georgia for 12 years. You wanted to understand Georgia Politics kind of in a microcosm, it would be these exact dynamics. As people became increasingly aware that there was this Slumbering Clos Sas of black voters in these rural counties that when you combine them with the Metro Atlanta populations and those suburban populations could actually peel the state back into the blue column, which We Saw in 2020. People began enacting a strategy to make that happen, that explains the dynamics you saw around Voter Suppression in the State Of Georgia. Around the controversies in the governor Brian Kemps going all the way back to 2018 when he got into trouble for holding up 53,000 registered votes, most of whom were africanamerican. Thats why the law was passed in order to make it more difficult to give People Water if you were in line to vote. All of these things were meant to counteract the fact that there was this demographic reality that could actually make georgia a blue state. Yeah. Doug jones, you having done this yourself in the state of alabama, you know, winning in the southern states is a combination of maxing out theres always one Big Blue City in every Red State. Every Red State has a blue city, even utah has one, salt lake city. They all have one. It is about eating into some of those rural numbers and assess how you think that Harris And Walz are strategizing in terms of getting at least some traction in the rural parts of the state. Yeah. You know, joy, i completely agree with you. That you got to you got to narrow the gap. Thats what i see in these rural areas. Theyll lose a lot of these counties. Theyll lose the counties they probably went into today. But if you dont lose them as big, Peel Off not just minority voters, but you can Peel Off white voters, white rural voters you remember at one point were all in for democrats because democrats gave them roads. Democrats gave them electricity. Democrats gave them social Security And Medicare and medicaid. So i think theres an argument to be made that the message that were putting out there right now, especially with Tim Walz who can relate to those rural white voters a lot, i think we can narrow those gaps. I think its a wonderful strategy. I think its a strategy that cannot only win Georgia And Flip georgia, but its a strategy that if we can continue this pattern over the next cycles, we can make some serious in roads in the south. Paul, let me get you in here because one of the strategies that the Trump Administration uses, he appeals to his traditional base included military veterans, military folks. He went to Arlington National Cemetery, an iconic, very important place in the united states for anyone connected in any way to the United States Military just reveres them. He was invited by one family to come out and be a part of the this wreath laying ceremony. Supposed to be a solemn event. Theres a whole controversy, Npr First reported that there was a confrontation between Donald Trumps team and the folks at arlington because you are not allowed to use arlington for political purposes. Youre not supposed to photograph in certain areas where they are sacred and Human Beings buried there. Youre not supposed to use them as props. He did so any way. Some of the things he posted on social media, posted some videos that looked like they were shot there and the purpose of being there was to make these videos for himself, which youre not allowed to do. Talk a little bit about that controversy because it doesnt feel like an authentic way to get folks in the military because Donald Trump said some nasty things about veterans. Its a real issue. And i think most importantly because the rules are very clear, youre not supposed to use Arlington National Cemetery for a political photo op. And the controversy right now is not between trump and some liberal group or between msnbc, its Trump And Arlington national cemetery. Theyve actually put out an official statement saying here are the rules. This is why we have the rules. And trump broke the rules because youre not supposed to create content. Youre not supposed to take tiktok videos. Its not disney world. You dont go down there to take a selfie. Its the most sacred place in our country. And should be treated as that. He clearly crossed the line and broke the rules. Its also bad taste. To have a photo of him with a thumbs up and smile over the grave of a marine is inappropriate. Its disgraceful. And i dont think its going to help him with ingent voters. I think thats this pattern that youve seen where he continues to make mistakes. He insulted Medal Of Honor recipients, attacked john mccain. We know that narrative. It is stacking up and hurts him in places like georgia with independent voters. Almost half the country is independent and care about veterans issues and care about national security. If you can question trumps petri terrorism as Vice President harris very effectively did in the convention, you can move people because theyre sounding like a more moderate democratic party, especially coming out of the dnc. And you backstop that with a campaign with Tim Walz Out In Front who is a coach, who served in the national guard, and you can really make some headway. I served in the army in georgia. I was at ft. Steward, ft. Benning. I know georgia. Tim walz gives you the ability to walk into a Vfw Hall and Military Base and get people to pay attention where they otherwise would never listen to democrats. If you can Peel Off those people, you can make some significant gains. Let me play their strategy seems to be send out Jd Vance. Here he is. Im not sure hes always the best messenger. To have those 13 americans lose their lives and not fire a single person is disgraceful. Kamala harris is disgraceful. We want to talk about a story out of those 13, brave, Innocent Americans who lost their lives, its that Kamala Harris is so Asleep At The Wheel that she wont do an investigation into what happened and she wants to yell at Donald Trump because he showed up . She can she can go to hell. Doug jones, two things there. Number one, im not sure thats very Vice President ial level language. But number two, hes talking about the withdrawal from afghanistan, which was literally Donald Trumps policy. The only difference between Donald Trump and Joe Biden on the issue of afghanistan is that Joe Biden did it three months after Donald Trump wanted to do it. Donald trump wanted to do it in may. The actual withdrawal was in august. What do you make of that result . And how is that helpful for no, i dont think its helpful at all. I dont think its helpful at all. I agree with you. Its certainly not the coming of a Vice President of a Vice President ial candidate, much less a Vice President. I think Theres Something bigger at play here, joy. And that is the fact i think that Donald Trump is telegraphing his internal polling is showing hes really getting hurt with veterans. Hes really getting hurt on the veteran issue. Its why they have to point to 13 service members who tragically lost their life in Afghanistan And Focus on that only while going for photo ops in Arlington National Cemetery, that was not by accident. That was because he is catching so much grief about his comments about senator mccain, about veterans, about war heroes, about everything involving the military, and at the convention, you saw members of congress from the democratic party who are veterans parading out on stage, showing the flag, waving the flag. Democrats have taken back patriotism and thats a big thing for veterans in the military as well. Hes showing some numbers that are scaring that campaign. Thats why youre seeing a lot of focus on this. And to go back to you, latasha, it is a puzzle to put together to try to get people out. And military veterans, i mean, georgia is a state thats got a lot of veterans. Its got a lot of folks, you know, across the state in that group as well. Just talk a little bit about the diversity of the coalitions that youre talking with and what is their feedback on seeing Tim Walz and Kamala Harris in the state. You know, i certainly think that they have an advantage. Im so happy that theyre back in the state. I think its a brilliant strategy because if you look at who makes up the state, the state is far more diverse and state is younger. Is a younger electorate, whats really interesting is the fact that she would go to a high school, i dont think thats by accident. I think thats very smart and rural areas. I think those are all areas she can gain that we see this enormous rise of young women, registered to vote, now want to get involved and issue about reproductive health is also an issue that is very, very top of the list for young voters as well. I think its smart that theyre focussing on young voters. I also think having Tim Walz as part of the ticket is exactly what is needed. That this is a military man. This is someone who has been honorable. This is someone who served their country. So when you go i think there are voters theyll be able to tap into and the rural georgia, voters theyll be able to tap into who really care about veterans in this country. I certainly believe part of what were seeing from and were hearing this from Trump And Vance is as a result, that they know that theyre losing in that area. I think it reeks desperation and i believe that the Harris Campaign should stay focussed, continue doing what theyre doing and i believe they literally have a lot to be able to gained. Its a helpful reminder that one of the things in project 2025 is to force every high School Student in a Public School to take the military Entrance Exam that they want to use the military to potentially shoot fellow americans who are protesting. Theres a lot of sort of confluence between a lot of these issues and it all does seem to keep winding right back to georgia. Georgia is on all of our minds. Thank you all very much. And by the way, that chilling ad, The End where i had never heard that, where he himself said, revenge takes time. I think that pretty much says it all. But project 2025, first of all, its the name. Right . They mean it. Its the year. And as Tim Walz said in his speech at the convention, you know, when someone gives you a play book, maybe you better look at it because theyre going to follow it. And especially when it comes to reproductive rights. It is chilling. Basically it says that the fda should withdraw its approval of mifepristone, which as you know, joy, used in over 90 countries, found safe, used by so many american women. Withdraw its approval and if people are mailing it, they should be criminally prosecuted. Thats right in there in project 2025 in that 900 plus page document. And you know, while people i think have rightly connected project 2025 to Donald Trump because obviously so many members of his former administration the Heritage Foundation from whom he got his judges wrote it, do you think that democrats have successfully enough made the case that that is an administrative plan. But if you look at the united states senate, if democrats dont hold the senate, the lets say Kamala Harris did win the white house, she could still be faced with a national abortion ban. She could still be faced with attempts to implement some of these same policies through the legislative arm. Have democrats made a strong enough case that, i dont know, democrats need to hold maryland, hold ohio, Hold Montana . Is that case being made . Well, if i could make a pitch for Anglo Alsobrook in maryland, incredible candidate. Did such a good job at the convention. And we need a majority. We need to hold the senate to be able to change this scenario, because, as you know, one third of women right now are living in states with extreme bans. And the only way we change it is by codified roe v. Wade into law. While Kamala Harris would have the power of vetoing bills, if we actually want to change the scenario and the voters have shown they understand this from states like ohio, where Sherrod Brown is running to Wisconsin Tammy Baldwin is running, they have shown by 10, 11, 12, Points Referendums or supreme Court Justice votes they get it. That is you must codify roe v. Wade into law if youre going to guarantee these rights. The way we do that, joy, is by holding the senate. Then that will and of course winning the house will allow us to codify roe v. Wade into law. Im going to were trying to get the head of the democratic senate Congressional Committee on because what we have seen is lots and lots of spending on the other side, larry hogan, not a whole lot of people of spending by people like angela alsobrooks. Thats not your job. As a senator, i feel i just talked to angela last night. And i think we are all responsible making sure this tremendous woman wins this race. All right. Let me play Jd Vance. He said something new, not new, dashing childless teachers. Here he is. So many of the leaders of the left, and i hate to be so personal about this, but theyre people without kids, trying to brainwash the minds of our children. And that really disorients me, and it really disteshs me. Randi weingarten doesnt have a single child. She should have some of her own and leave ours the hell alone. It makes me wonder how he feels about nun. I dont understand it, do you . Its reminiscent of the cat lady remark. We know how well that went where he went after childless cat ladies. But lets leave that aside. First of all, i have seen randi in the classroom and seen her interact with children. And she loves children. Number two, i was just thinking in my own life, my mom taught second grade until she was 70 years old. Was a fantastic teacher. I still have people come up to me on The Street and say she was their favorite teacher. This is personal to me. My favorite teacher of all time was my fourth Grade Teacher who did not have children, had bright Red Hair and stood in the back of the classroom as i tried to give my public speeches and said, speak louder. I cant hear you. She changed my life, joy. And so my point is, everyone that hears that comment takes it to a bigger story, are you seriously saying if you dont have kids you cant be a good teacher . No one believes that because they all have their own teacher in their life. Someone who Cant Order a donut in a regular Donut Shop should be talking about what anyone else is doing. Just saying. And one of the things she understood deeply that day as we have seen in that tape and others is that Donald Trump instigated the insurrection and he didnt stop it. I was there, joy. In fact, it was Roy Blunt and myself and Mike Pence that made that walk at 3 30 in the morning, just us, everyone else in the senate was sent home over the broken glass by the Spray Painted Pillars with racism, the three pairs of young pages carrying those boxes, the mahogany boxes with all the countrys electoral ballots, including those that we needed to show the country who actually won that race because someone had the foresight to get them out of the senate before the insurrectionists came in. And i can tell you right now, that you dont ever forget that. And Nancy Pelosi was the one waiting in the House Of Representatives for us to arrive to do our jobs and show that democracy would prevail. So from the very beginning, she felt it was important to hold him accountable for what happened. And she continues to do that today. That is thank you for sharing that harrowing stuff. With Election Day fast approaching, both president ial campaigns are making their case to the american people as to why they are best positioned to take on the challenges the country faces. With that, we are seeing two very different visions for the future of our economy and especially for american workers. And when it comes to american workers, one of the stars of last weeks democratic national convention, laid out the stark difference between voters choices in november. For the uaw and for Working Class people everywhere, this election comes down to one question which side are you on . On one side we have Kamala Harris and Tim Walz who have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Working Class. On the other side, we have Trump And Vance. Two Lap Dogs for the Billionaire Class who only serve themselves. So for us in the labor movement, its real simple. Kamala harris is one of us. Joining me now is shawn fain, president of the united autoworkers. Its so good to finally get you on the show and really great to talk to you. I read an Article Today that the headline was what do american workers want . What do your Union Members want . Hey, thanks for having me, joy. Look, i take it back to our Big Three fight. You know, almost a year ago now. Look, Working Class people are tired of going backwards. And you look at the four core things we look at, which is the living wage. By living wage, we mean Working Class people want to go to work and live a decent life of one job. They want adequate healthcare. They want Retirement Security and they want their lives back. They want to not have to work seven days a week, 12 hours a day or work two or three jobs just to scrape to get by. And we have seen in the last 40 years since reagan and Trickle Down Economics and trumps champion for the same mantra, we have seen Working Class people continually get left behind further and further while the Billionaire Class and those at the top take all the wealth. Three families in this country have as much wealth as the bottom 50 of americans. Thats what Working Class people want. Union or not, they just want their lives back and want to be able to have a job with dignity to live a decent life. This is the thing that i guess sort of confuses me and i look at it and look at the numbers. Its sometimes really confusing. As Vice President , Kamala Harris led the white House Task Force on Worker Organizing and empowerment. Protecting workers who face illegal retaliation when they organize. Establishes a Resource Center for unions and collective bargaining. Advancing equity across underserved communities. President biden walked a literal Picket Line. Donald trumps record on american workers is opposite. Changed the rules to qualify for overtime pay. He opposed legislation to raise the national Minimum Wage to 15 an hour. He repealed regulations as president that protected vulnerable workers from amassing debts from payday loans. He gave tax incentives. Then encouraged companies to move jobs overseas and made it harder for workers to join a union. He lied to workers in towns where he said dont sell your homes. Dont move. These plants wont close. Then those plants closed any way. Why do so many Union Members and Working Class Folks Vote for this man . I think, first off, lets be clear, a huge majority of our members will be voting for Kamala Harris this election. But, you know, i think trump is a con artist. He talks the talk. And, you know, people buy it. Unfortunately reality says something different. Trump talks about how hes going to save Auto Jobs. Donald trump had plenty of opportunity to save Auto Jobs when he was president and he did nothing as jobs were leaving the country. He did 0. And you know, you look at a great contrast. Now as governor he has not created a single job. As a conservative he is supposed to be probusiness and helping create a strong economy. You would think he would spend times on things other than critical Race Theory which is not taught to students in louisiana. If you want to do something for the people of louisiana, help provide jobs and opportunities for rural communities that you say you care about. But the reality is they dont care about these communities. They want to be friends with people like Donald Trump because they are small men trying to become bigger men with small ideas that harm people. I say all the time that project 2025 is a warning for the nation but there is already a project 2025 in the state of louisiana and it is already governed by that agenda. Talk about how that has played out for the third of that state that is black, but also for white, poor folks in your state. The question has to become every time we elect a governor, what are you going to do for the people . When we look at projects Jeff Landry has been talking about, all of them were created by the democratic governor, his predecessor. When you said as governor for eight months. You dont have a single economic plan for the state. All of the policies are to lock people up, jail people or strip away rights from people. How is that a benefit for the prosperity of the people of ri this state . If you are poor or a white person making under 100,000 a year, you are a paycheck away from poverty and the question becomes how do you ensure that your family has a future in the state because your children will move to a state that is blue, because that is where the opportunities are. Meanwhile Governor Landry is accusing undocumented immigrants and illegals of voting which is just not true, because as you said people are leaving, not coming because he has not built an economic base in that state that can grow Anyones Prosperity except his own.
