In the 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle starts now. Tonight tonight the race for the White House heats up as the Harriswalz Team launches a tour bus. And then Jack Smith will go on offense with a new indictment against Donald Trump. And veterans of the bush, mccain, Romney Team reject trump as the 11th Hour gets underway on a tuesday night. Im in for Stephanie Ruhle. Just hours from now the Harris Walz Team will hit the road for the first time since accepting the democratic nomination last week. The Twoday Bus Tour of Southern Georgia is set to begin tomorrow. They will continue their focus on the Battleground States on Labor Day next week. Vice president harris will head to pennsylvania to appear with biden on monday. Meanwhile republican candidate Donald Trump has been indicted. Yes, special counsel Jack Smith filed revised charges late today. It comes less than two months after the ruling on president ial immunity, removing some of the charges in an effort to save the case. Well have much more on that in just a moment ahead, so dont go anywhere. And we are now exactly two weeks away from the first president ial debate. Donald trump has suggested he might back out of the September 10 event. But today he posted on the social Media Site that he would debate harris as long as the rules were the same as his matchup with Joe Biden. Remember, cnn during that debate muted microphones when the candidate was speaking. And both candidates have publicly made clear their willingness with unmuted mics for the duration of the debate to fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates. It appears Donald Trump is letting his handlers overrule him. Sad. And it seems we will have to wait and see how and if the hot Mic Issue will get resolved. With that lets bring in our Leadoff Panel who is here for the washington post. And say that five times. And he is also here and the editor at large for the 19th and a political contributor. And also with us, where he wrote the book. And i want to start with you because you know Atlanta And Georgia just as well as anybody actually down there covering the state. And they note this Bus Tour is a big deal because it is outside the atl. Talk to us about why that is, in fact, the case. Absolutely. Good to be with you, symone. And it is a world away in terms of being a very different georgia where this will focus on rural americans. Its going to bring a focus on, you know, Working Class folks and really the kind of people shes trying to highlight in this campaign that they are focused on the middle class and that they will tab into one of the most important issues. And that people in South Georgia are struggling to make ends meet whether youre talking about housing and whether youre talking about groceries. To hear from the governor about what they would do is something that could be very meaningful for people in communities all across the country that looks like those communities that it will really say something where they are choosing to go coming out of that condition, you know, calling on americans who are struggling even as this is that momentum and joy. Absolutely. And they are in Place U all across the state if they want to be competitive. We have to be statewide in that place. And this is her second trip to georgia where they are going to go to rural areas and they know a little bit about closing the gap. He was the Campaign Manager to the senator and a very successful campaign. Are these the kind of plays that might make the Trump Team nervous . I would have to think so. You know, it was not that long ago that the Republican National Convention in milwaukee when they were briefing reporters, talking about how the Trump Campaign was expanding the map, and how they were going to possibly contest states like New Mexico and virginia. And how they were so far ahead of biden in the traditional Battleground State that they were going to be able to venture into these states that have been Trending Blue in the last few election cycles. I dont think were hearing a lot of that same rhetoric from the Trump Campaign anymore. And the fact that the Harris Campaign is doing this pretty ambitious blitz in georgia suggests that they will see the real opportunity there. And that that it will be off the table. How they shifted in the last few weeks. And in selecting the senator, did the Trump Campaign and all those things that they were an expansion of the Running Mate . And to me that it was suggested they were doubling down on the debates. I heard all the briefings where they were forceful about the fact not only New Mexico, but mexico was in play . And yeah, when they would talk about j. D. Vance, they would say were going to drop him in states like pennsylvania. Let him move in there and win the state for us. I dont think they necessarily saw vance as somebody who was going to compete in new blue states, although that could be where he was contested. They saw him as somebody that could solidify the games and those midwestern states while trump expanded in other states. And i have a theory that j. D. Vance was a pick for supreme overconfidence. Youll recall at this point, biden was at the top of the ticket and they were riding what disaster performance. I think trump taught he could pick whoever he wanted because he thought he was on track to win. The race looks different than when he picked j. D. Vance as Running Mate. Speaking of the difference, the Harriswalz Cam Hain has scheduled a Sitdown Interview that will happen in savannah during the Bus Tour. And it was a solo stop for the Vice President only. The opponents have been calling for an interview as they say the gavels were not enough. Members have been asking for it and the voters have not been demanding an interview though and so what do you think it says that this has been scheduled . What is the chatter for tonight . In part because they want to get an interview. Shes the hottest ticket right now and she is new. And also people want to know what she thinks about those various policies as she took that position where she is now. The Trump Campaign has not been able to land a punch on her over the last several weeks. She has to stay on the script and she cannot answer questions. And those are the arguments that they are making and now she has sort of met the challenge and how she performs during the interviews will be important to understand the charge because they first charged her with whether or not shes black or asian or can stand before leaders on the World Stage where she has been able to push back on those arguments and they tried to label her as a liberal. And she would be the president for all americans. And so now theyre saying she cannot do interviews and whether or not she could rise to the moment will determine whether or not they will go to try to land a punch on her in a different way. And i was talking to some strategist and some Reporters Today about this and im wondering if you have to give the margin to the reporters. Is there a standard . He talks a lot to The Press, but he doesnt Tell The Truth and sometimes he will run over the reporters. But does that make it okay . And is there a double Stan Card here . He is one of the hardest people to interview in part because he says whats on his mind and he strays very far from the truth and trying to fact check him in real time is very difficult. He has made a strategy of using the media to bowl over reporters, not stop to sort of focus on the facts. So he has been very willing to talk to them and while Kamala Harris knows that a lot of the things will be picked apart and as a reporter, you know, we want access because we want to be able to request questions and we want to know what they think and it is a very difficult decision when you have one that doesnt care about the truth and another one who will be sticking to the truth. As reporters, we obviously want them to be everywhere talking to The Press and reporters as much as possible to find out what they believe. Its a very different set of circumstances when youre looking for them to have two different approaches to the truth, which will make it hard to engage them. And ill start using that phrase, aaron. And we did a story on this last night where they are fighting the changes right now, and i want to play what they said today right now. We saw republicans changing the law where they have been trying to set up the case to not start a fight that will be in november. Do you think they are paying close attention to voters in the state . Absolutely. Now listen, theyre very familiar with attempts to make it more difficult to vote and this is going on for sure, and after the 2020 election where we are in an era that will come down to which ones will win. And that it was fair and accurate and verified by three times, that georgia will continue to take steps for them to participate, you know, that they have to be very vigilant about. Because the bottom line for people to have confidence in the system, they have to believe that their votes will count and that is not nearly something that will have confidence in. I mean when the governor wondered if he could do anything, that speaks volumes. I want to switch topics because just today, they predict that Vice President harris economic proposals would add between 1. 2 and 2 Trillion to the deficit, whereas you take a look at Donald Trump, they would add between 4 to 6 to the deficit. Do you think harris could use a Talking Point about deficits against trump . Are we too far past that . And during his first term, Donald Trump added almost 5 Trillion to the deficit, which is double what biden had and that is the Talking Point Nikki Haley had in the primary. Is that one that will speak to the voters . I think the issue is there is very little evidence for either parties that care. There is a lot that will say we are reaching the point where this needs to be receiving a lot more attention than what it is. And when he first went through the senate, hes the guy that will care about the national debt as he went around to the senators, trying to drum up support. And look, its a political loser. We are not going to tackle it and you will not get anywhere with this and i think it has proven true, you know, mitt romney, 2012, he ran on the deficit. It was not a winning issue for him. Since then one of Donald Trumps political innovations was to realize he could break on these issues. The reality is always more complicated for the president s that will expand their deficits. But he did not even really try to pretend like he was going to tackle the deficit. I think he realized that voters are going to let him get away with it and i do think to your point, symone, about republicans, there is a reason why a lot of these republicans from the bush campaign, the romney campaign, and the campaign came out to endorse Kamala Harris. They dont see trump as a fiscally disciplined conservative like those republicans in the past. And so it is one of many reasons that they dont feel any special loyalty to Donald Trump as a republican standard. And it makes that point. To the top of her segment that housing is one of the top issues for folks. So maybe well hear more from Donald Trump on housing. And the last question i want to get into is spending a lot of money and they are spending a lot of times on attacking the Vice President on the issue of The Border and they have an issue that has just plagued the administration where they changed their minds on funding The Border wall, which is a part of the bill. I remember when the bill was killed and we said it was the most conservative bill ever. And things like this were in it. Do you think this is a Talking Point for the campaign . It is the best thing in terms of not being able to stick a lot of things on harris and things that dont seem to stick to her and two because she started to roll out different policies. And on The Border, she has taken a much Duffer Stance than what they have previously taken in saying that she would support this bill that would crack down and fund it. And biden said he would sign the bill. And there was a question on whether or not she would continue to push that message. And she would sign that bill just as it is. So she has taken a position of Strength And Force on The Border when in the past democrats have been on the defense where now shes going on defense and turning them into an asset by attacking trump saying he is undermining the Border Security and whether or not that will work out in her favor. That repains to be seen. But so far she has taken a strong stance. From the republicans who think calling her is the best thing. And maybe they have finally learned. Before before the break, we told you the Grand Jury subverted the election results, but now includes some key changes as we will have much more on the latest move. Reporter tonight, trying to breathe new life into the Criminal Case against Donald Trump as he runs for reelection. He is now facing an indictment in washington, d. C. That they say they are off limits and immuned. Leaning on his Vp And State official to help him overturn. And the evidence could be tested. Dealing with the real blow in july, finding mr. Trump cannot be prosecuted for official acts while president. When he can be prosecuted for, if anything. Youre not going to do anything because you dont have immunity. Reporter the former president plead not guilty to all charges. Tonight the source familiar with his legal strategy tells nbc news, he will do the same with this revised indictment. And it includes the same law including The Pressure on his former vp and his new Running Mate pouncing on that. Center its an effort to do more Election Interference from Jack Smith. Thats one of the reasons why we have to win because he should not be anywhere near power. Okay, this comes as the other Criminal Cases remain at a standstill. Just yesterday special counsel Jack Smith urged an Appeals Court to reject judge Cannons Decision to throw out the case. It has been delayed until after this Years President ial election. And Donald Trump is still awaiting sentencing in his New York Criminal Case. Well, lets bring in harry litman, former Attorney And Attorney general. Harry, i was literally at the mall when this happened. And how significant is it really . Yeah, jack is back. And all the four charges are the same, saying i can prove this entire case. The penalty is going to be no less than what it was before, but they wont have the benefit of everything having to do with the interaction with the Department Of Justice and a few other ways in which he would same things away. As they were saying, its a bold move on their part to keep pence in there. But there is a presumption that it is official and that can be rebutted, saying we can rebut it and give us a shot to rebut it. But one thing they say, there could be another round up to the circuit, but we will no longer have that Clock Ticking because there was no chance before november. And the indictment, basically how the private duties. And how did they decide what was and was not that they would give you an example and one of those examples is conversations with the Justice Department officials, which is why its not in there. How do you know whats official and unofficial . Honestly having worked in the Executive Office Of The President , i would have thought the Justice Department conversations were unofficial duties. I didnt know it was official to, you know, ask people to investigate in a free and fair election. It sure felt that way, right . Just to take an example if this been the law. What Richard Nixon did in trying this is immuned for. But the court, you know, the d. O. J. Did their best with what their offense, what they got that guidance for. In this one instance, the court did say any time youre dealing with doj, thats a part of your official duties, so they knew they did not have much of a choice and other places are much more gray and in general, she would call the department and call that gray area in favor of going forward aggressively where they are all there and that is the best Champ L that boy they sure could say that when Trump And Pence are talking that it is official action and yet theyre ready to say no its not or at least it did not intrude on the authority of the whole kind of standard that they would put out there that it is the hand that they were dealt with the department, but they took their best shot and they tried to keep the case intact, which is the sort of headline here. And before we go, it just so happens that she spoke to Cbs News about the ruling recently. I want to play this for you. Yeah. And you wrote they declared that the most powerful official in the united states can, under circumstances, yet to be fully determined, become a law onto himself. Sounds like a warning . Well, i mean that was my view of what the court determined. You were concerned about broad immunity . I was concerned about a system that appeared to provide immunity for one individual under one set of circumstances. When we have a criminal Justice System that had ordinarily treated everyone the same. And what do you make of this statement from Justice Jackson . And i will note her book is coming out next week as a part of her book tour. And look, symone, people read them from the bench and She E is doing no more than that as she did field the question, but you feel it is poignant that they would have the three and these cases are rolled and i dont think what she did is any different from reading from the bench and it doesnt happen much. People will say she shouldnt be taking this to The Press. Thats what they do. You publicize your views. But the fact remains that maybe it is a part of what she was saying if you listen to by how they steam roll over it. And we should all take another read at the actual decisions. The the Harris Campaign is courting republican voters with a big endorsement. More than 200 bush, mccain, and romney staffers wrote an official letter backing Vice President harris. What do you think about the list . On the one hand its pretty good where it is hard to imagine, right . It is not as if there are people on the campaign that are out endorsing the campaign. And so it is 200 to 1. I was happy to see some of these folks, a few names that jumped out to me. And becker is one that jumped out to me, the Chief Of Staff for george w. Bush and the entire presidency that says a lot of the value of the Elder Bush and barbara bush. Who are no longer with us. But you know, i think it should be that first step, right . Hopefully these people can be nudged to get some of the bigger names off the sidelines. I mean h. R. Mcmasters has been doing the rounds this week, and it is something we could go down the list where this is a good thing and it is something Donald Trump doesnt have. Its the first step to getting haley voters, but i want more and more is more. And brian, two points. Where he did not weigh in on if he would vote for them and he would not work for him again. And in my opinion, he would have a weird oped. And what does this all tell you from that perspective . And they are trying to strike that l that line and have it both ways to retain that sense of dignity and still trying and basically trying to have that cake and eat it too where they feed to recognize this is the party that there is not some, there is not some Sleeping Thing of that party that will bring up again. So it is up to them on whether or not they want to speak out through the rest of the republican party or if they want to continue to feed into it where they will step away and not take that full sleep. That is the point that you made where you recognize some of the names, right . And the voters, they might not know these folks really well where you want more. Do we need to see some of the better known generals that worked with trump . Something is better than nothing and some of these people in that campaign, doing some efforts to work on that level, right . Bringing out the republicans where that is a good thing. But yeah, we need more as you mentioned the Mcmaster Oped in atlanta and it was absurd, right . And he is quoting historic philosophers and with what they just did. And its like what are you even talking about . Donald trump is a clown. And this is not getting us anywhere. Where having some people that saw Donald Trump upclose and to say clearly without the legal words and without any fancy stoics. This guy is dangerous. Hes a bad person. As a result Kamala Harris is a better option. Not only a better option, but somebody that is appropriate to the president of the united states that is in the tradition and the people that will care about our security. I dont think that is too big of an ask and hopefully well see more of it in the next two months. We will be watching forever, and that it matters. And there are some other people that signed their name on the list where they will pass them for their transition team. What did you make of these choices . Symone, if the issue is that too many people will call you and your Running Mate weird, then your response is to tap the guy who is well known right now for putting that in his truck. I dont know if that will accomplish that, brian. And yes and it is not like shes swimming in that pool of normalcy either, of not being weird. So this is a Double Down of exactly the problem that they are meshed in and if you need to reach out to those moms and you are destained for nato and ukraine, is this going to do it . Is reaching out to rfk, a valid opponent of vaccine and just a general strange guy. Is that going to accomplish what youre seeking out to accomplish . I dont think so. Beats me. Tim, lastly, can we talk about the New York times oped that took a closer look at where the money people donate to the Trump Campaign is going . This is what they found. In 2020 it almost 560 Million out of 780 Million to the Biden Campaign was directed to a private consulting company, which then, you know, hid or wound up receiving those donor dollars. Um having worked for a campaign before, this is not normal and maybe it is not normal for democratic politics. Is this normal in the campaign . It is a new thing. And why have not more investigative reporters been looking into this . And if we can get over this, hopefully that will be another challenge to look forward to. Its crazy what theyre doing. Jared kushner and Eric Trump with their finger on the group that has taken the Campaign Money and it is obviously going to legal bills to offset that and it sure seems very likely that that is what theyre doing. You know, all kinds of weird stuff that they are spending their money on and stuff and then they stopped doing that. We dont know. And so i appreciate that giuliana highlighted that. How remarkable is it that this what happened . We just dozens of palestinians were killed because the hostages were being held in a heavily populated area, with hamas operatives taking those operatives. So this is overwhelmingly joyous news obviously for the Family And Everyone who has followed a plate of the hostages. The only significant relief of hostages came for a diplomatic agreement earlier in the conflict. Many months ago when you had dozens of hostages released, it could lead to the release of dozens not just one. The israeli government says that this particular rescue will put pressure on hamas. But this is only the eighth hostage to be freed this way. To your point, the largest number of hostages that came home were due to to negotiations. So the missing families for him is clear, a negotiated Peace Deal is the only way to free the remaining. How much pressure is on netanyahu to get that done . Well, theres been a tremendous amount of pressure inside of israel and particularly from the Hostage Families who have been very outspoken in believing that yahoo has not prioritized the hostages well. What we have seen is the deal that the administration has really been pushing, particularly since the last three months since Joe Biden announced there was this proposal, would involve that kind of larger exchange of hostages for some palestinian prisoners being held. But also, a formula for a Cease Fire. And the gap thus far, does not really narrow when it comes to some of the bigger issues like Hamas Insistence that the Cease Fire be an end to the war. And Israels Insistence that it be a temporary ceasefire and they could resume Military Operations to maintain security control. So it just feels tragically like they are continuing to be a gap between the two sides. Obviously, thor hundreds of thousands of palestinians who are suffering ongoing bombardment, famine like conditions and now an outbreak of polio. So long as the conflict grinds on, the hostages and palestinians in gaza are the most vulnerable people. So then what closes that gap .
