>> is someone who talks to business and financial leaders, what i find stunning is that after saying they would never deal with donald trump again behind the scenes -- is not just the up front public staff in washington. it's the behind the scenes schmoozing usa right now from wall street reaching out to trump. i was in asia last week and again, you can see asian leaders, as well, beginning to pivot and adjust themselves to a world where trunk comes back in november. >> is that because you think business leaders are excited to have him back or they're just bracing themselves and they know they've got a decent chance he's going to be the guy and they don't want to be on his enemy list? >> i feel like business leaders are trying to make a compromise at this time are trying to figure out where to place their bets. on cnbc today, my calling has spoken to a lot of people that were in the business roundtable yesterday who came out and told andrew he sounded crazy, he was rambling. we're going to get more of the same. he wants to cut the corporate tax rate from 21% to 20%. companies don't pay taxes anyway. >> even before the corporate tax cut during the trump administration, none of them asked for 21%. 28% was their goal. >> so, there is a world in which i think one of the things xander said is that some of these people were inclined to support him because they're thinking about their pocketbooks more than their thinking about abortion rights, welfare for the country, democracy, which is not a surprise, but even they were disturbed by the trump they just met. >> the problem i have with that, and is reporting is so good but the fact that they are telling him, not just coming out and saying it, coming out on cameron saying we just saw the former president and we have a lot of concerns. the fact that they are making these moves behind closed doors, not being up front with it, i think that is as cowardly as the republicans in congress were willing to stand next to him in order to make sure they are on his good side should he win. >> this is what is crazy about that to me, that these ceos, who in theory should be among the most informed people in this country, right? they have thousands of employees. they run multibillion-dollar businesses and somehow, they were surprised that donald trump made no sense, was meandering and seemed to be lost? how on earth could they not know that? all you have to do is watch him speak. >> as degradation is -- because you thought he was at the bottom before, right? you thought there was no lower he could possibly go than where he's been and when you watch his speeches like i'm surprised when i watch his speeches because he's always been a rambler but now he's doug -- i thought he was on the concrete floor. now he's in china. he's gone through the other side and he looks terrible. >> he is up against this shatter about biden looking terrible and biden rambling as well so i think what is happening is a lot of people are screening out insane well, they both sound old so we will look at the questions of policies. >> the other thing is that he has been such a bully, and the people who -- >> i have to like how you pause and think. a bully. >> it's not just him. it's his allies. everyone in the republican party who is opposed him has been drummed out so viciously. liz cheney, those folks, it feels like they are gone. >> wartlike larry hogan today running for senate in maryland. trumps looking at him reportedly and trying to bring him in. hogan said justice is working after his conviction. >> he said you're dead meat larry hogan. >> i think a lot of business leaders are looking at the fact that trump is endorsing a number of republicans who are much more mainstream than in the past and thinking maybe if he can do that his policies won't be quite so crazy. >> that's wishful thinking because if he really was doing that he would come right out and say nikki haley's my vp. nikki haley continues to have support. she was out of the race for two months and still is some of those primary races she had 20% of the vote and there were all these people who have this notion that she is this george bush republican, and he's not embracing her. he humiliated her over and over again that she has embraced him. trout might say truck may be meandering but so is joe biden. let's talk about what we saw happen this week because the right is manufacturing the stories they're telling about joe biden. we saw it this week. the cropped video from the g7 suggesting that joe biden was lost in the field, speaking to a paratrooper. it was not true. we have a clip that i want to show. oh no, you know what? we have a clip of trump. sorry. they made up the fact that joe biden was lost at the g7 meandering through a field. it wasn't true. that headline made its way to the new york post all overwrite meeting video. all over fox news this morning. talking about donald trump who earlier this week i think he was in vegas was giving a speech and somehow went so off the rails talking about an electric boat and shark bites and we do have a clip of this. >> i say, what would happen if a boat sank from its weight and you were in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery and the battery is now underwater and there is a shark that is approximately 10 yards over there. by the way, a lot of shark attacks lately, do you notice that? i watched some guys justifying it today. they weren't really that angry. they bit off the young ladies like because of the fact that they were not hungry but misunderstood who she was. >> like for real, what in the holy hell is he saying? that is unedited. we keep hearing that joe biden , he is feeble. >> while you see, sharks have an electric current sense. it sounds like he's high, genuinely. this is like a college freshman is like okay, say you're in a boat then there's like a battery really far away so like because the battery is underwater the whole ocean is electrified. except the other side of the boat so do you jump in or take your chances with the shark or take your chances with the battery like it's insane. by the way, the comparison with joe biden is like policy. joe biden makes gaffes sometimes. sometimes he'll stumble, sometimes it's embarrassing. >> he also has a list. >> and he's always done that. it isn't new. >> not a list, a stutter. >> and he's worked with starters in their beautiful stories about it but like he never promises policy. he never proposes like a new system of governance are offers like a marijuana hypothetical. he doesn't go on these insane rants, so the equivalency for me is just nonexistent. >> in some ways, it is a real eddie that there is not as much coverages trumps features as there was a couple of years ago. >> basically joe biden is pushing up against the fact that as president of the united states is always going to be monitored by the press and everything he says is publicized. donald trump has the advantage of being able to pop up whenever he wants, throw out a couple of shark questions then disappear, which joe biden can't do. >> in the press are not covering it the way they were before. >> we criticized for not covering him as much and then before it was why are you giving donald trump wall-to- wall coverage? i think in 2016 he was still kind of rambling but he had a better grasp of what he was trying to convey at that time. >> there was a kind of negative charisma. a narrative, a manufactured narrative it was flawed in every way ethically, but at least it was going somewhere and as a comedian who appreciates improvising and riffing, part of me was like well, this guy is a maniac. he is a showman. he's playing on everybody's fears and really understands the fluid dynamics of what makes an audience work and now, he's lost something like give him a hook. get them out of here. >> i agree. >> there is a sense though that there is still a referendum on whether or not president biden is like in some way enfeebled, and so every possible gaffe that he may show in a negative edited light seems somehow newsworthy. if the viewer like this just in, trump, lunatic. people are like yeah, we know. >> today is his birthday, i believe, and if he wins he will become the oldest president in history and no one is talking about that. >> might interest them shaded this today actually on a social media post which was actually quite clever sign well, happy birthday, donald trump. we both know what it's like to be old, you know. >> but then do we have to go back to the start of the business community wants to lean on right now because the same business leaders you're talking to love to say he's feeble, he's incapable yet joe biden has a laundry list of policy accomplishments, and when you hear the policies donald trump wants to put forward -- what did we hear this week? let's get rid of the u.s. tax system and replace it with super tariffs. that is disastrous, so is all of this really just the business community hiding behind the fact with what they really want, which is to buy their way into the white house and have a bat phone into trump's office so they can get whatever they want and ensure they get the head of the ftc who is not lena con who is not going to question what's happening? >> i think it's a lot of that but there are two things where the rubber is going to hit the road with the business community in the next few months. one is what will happen to tariffs and in particular, to all of these factories they've been building in mexico and vietnam to try to get away from china. if you believe what the trump team is saying right now, they're going to put tariffs on those factors, too, and that's going to really hurt. the other big thing is debt because almost everything trump is talking about right now is going to increase the debt. >> republicans used to care about that. >> they did and in fact, it's pretty scary how unafraid they are right now by the size of the debt. >> i just want to add that i think what the business community is thinking about, consciously or not, is what is scarier to us or what is more appealing to us, having that access to the white house and are we arrogant enough to believe we can control donald trump, which we tried to do when he was president before. to think that can work again or are we more afraid of the idea that we could have a president who does not believe in the rule of law which at the end of the day, is what allowed america to be a great capitalist society, because we have rules. we believe in courts. we have order. that is what made america great place to do business and if you have a president is going to come in and say i don't like these rules. if a company makes me upset -- desantis and disney, but on a bigger scale, that's also scary so if you are looking at ceos, i think they are just waiting are we more afraid of what could happen or are we more tantalized by the opportunity to go in there and control the white house. >> and, they have no fears about things like abortion rights because none of that is ever going to affect them ever. anybody in the universe will ever need one will be all set. we are seeing republicans attack joe biden for his fitness. many of their attacks are made up. their latest attack has been that joe biden has politicized and weaponize to the doj. that was the whole argument around donald trump's conviction. this week, of course, hunter biden was found guilty and joe biden has very clearly said he would not pardon his son. he would not commute his sentence. how stark is this difference? how can republicans keep making this argument now that joe biden has really put it out there? >> you know, the funny thing is that it wasn't a difficult decision for me to vote for joe biden the first time around but when people released that -- somehow they got the transcripts of his messages back and forth with his son, like look at joe biden interacting is like a facebook messenger of his son in rehab and as soon as i read it, it was like this is a fundamentally decent guy. the way he talks about his son publicly, the way he treats his son publicly, it's someone who is a parent of a child of addiction. >> there are millions of those parents in this country. >> i think it's one of the most admirable things about him. i think it reflects on him really well. i think he handles it beautifully. it must be very difficult for him personally. >> republicans don't know what to do with that. oh, the doj is weaponized, they tried to dismiss the guilty verdict is like oh, they are just covering up the real biden crime family crimes that we've not found any real evidence of an cannot prove, but surely this guilty conviction is really just a mastermind scheme to prevent us from learning the truth about the bidens. the knots they twist themselves into to get around this discouragement since is really fascinating to watch. >> for years, fox news was like where is hunter and he stood there in the courtroom and accepted his sentence. could this end up being -- i'm not going to say a positive for president biden, but to your point, is this an opportunity for america to see the importance of decency? >> it's interesting to see how the evangelicals react because if you believe in punishment and serving time and then redemption and forgiveness when family loyalty, this is actually a pattern of behavior the evangelical church should be actually applauding and upholding. >> i've got a huge evangelical viewership. nobody is going anywhere. when we return, the supreme court makes another controversial decision on guns. two justices come under increased scrutiny again and later, president biden goes to hollywood, but does star power actually get out the vote? donald trump in the bump stock thing was something -- was one of the few things you heard all sorts of american say gosh, this was really something. it was a good idea. >> absolutely. the fact that this court could even take something that happened during the trump administration on guns and say that it's, unconstitutional and try to pretend like the law is not written in such a way that these weapons of mass killing do not fall under the correct category of submachine guns or machine guns for it to be regulated, that is wild. it was a completely ideological split and completely showcases how, on these matters, there is no debate. among the court's conservative members, it is what is it that will allow for the most -- the least amount of restriction when it comes to guns, period, and work backward from there. >> it is an ideological split but the other is on what kind of power the executive branch has. this is not the first decision i won't be the last decision where the supreme court weighs in on what an executive branch can do because remember the trump era bump stock decision was a decision by the justice department which originally said no, we can't unilaterally band bump stocks. we have to have congress pass a law. trump really wanted it, they found a way. but what the supreme court does not like is the idea that presidents and their administrations can basically make laws to factor through executive orders and other things, so they are saying no. no, who does that empower? theoretical it empowers congress, and the supreme court. the supreme court is giving itself a tremendous amount of power here in this ruling, and we are going to see it again and again and so if you really want gun reform you have to elect politicians. there are so many forces right now telling us it's important. it all comes down to legislation. >> on the issue is not strong guns comments around financial policy, antitrust policy, so many areas right now we are saying essentially power coming back from the agencies and into the supreme court and that's a really scary prospect if congress is unable, as you say, to do anything at all. >> you think this puts more pressure on congress to act because every poll out there, more and more americans want something done in terms of common sense gun safety. >> it feels like largely a bipartisan issue. >> and the powers of the nra have we can. >> you know what? if this is like a referendum on checks and balances like congress should -- yes, congress should pass a law. the answer to your question is yes. put more pressure on congress. look, i can understand it semantic based on the powers of the presidency or the second amendment but therefore, this thing that turns a gun into a submachine gun, something indistinguishable, like this semantic loophole that allows for many more deaths should be closed by congress. it seems like an easy one. >> all right. while all of this is going on, let's talk about some of the specific justices. today we learned more questionable news about supreme court justice clarence thomas, that he took more trips, got more perks from the super texas billionaire harlan crowe. even if harlan crowe doesn't have any specific business before this court, it doesn't seem like is -- it smells right and clarence thomas doesn't seem to care. >> he doesn't. he understands completely that because congress is not even going to think about impeaching him, that he can basically do whatever. as much as i appreciate the idea of trying to push for a code of ethics in congress, one, you see that senate democrats are willing to hold hearings to try to gain public support for pushing this idea and try to make more broadly known the issues that are in play here, and they're not even willing to what i would suggest they would do, is take the ethics code and make it enforceable, make it within the legislation. say it like if you violate this coded is grounds for impeachment. high crimes and misdemeanors including bribery are included in this ethics code. >> i just want to know if there's like status. i want to know if he's getting lounge access. he can fly miles? >> meanwhile he's always wanted his public brand be like we just go out and take the rv and we love these national parks but it's all a bunch of baloney. the thing is, republicans who don't want to address this in congress, who don't want to talk about a new ethics code are saying democrats just want this to happen because they don't like decisions that the supreme court is making. that is why they are pushing this. what is your take there? >> many things can be true at once. >> there you go. >> at the same time, they do believe that if we are going to have faith in the government, faith in the courts, it is not just me no conflict of interest. it means you can't have the appearance of a conflict of interest and of course, if you have ever lived in washington, everybody knows that so many decisions are made, all the power is off powered. yes, you become a congressman but the influence happens in social settings, like him so was really nice airplane flying to a really great vacation. that would be a really good place to influence. >> people think that is how politicians operate. for all these years we've had this naove false notion that it doesn't happen with the supreme court. >> exactly and that is one of the reasons why democrats and some republicans quietly are upset about what is happening with clarence thomas and justice alito, because it is giving the american public actual reason to believe that supreme court justices are just like politicians. you see the ratings for congress and the senate, you know that's a bad thing. >> it's spreading and spreading. i always talk about a swap with counsel cards and was in congress and now you have the swamp going into the supreme court, too. >> but, there was always this idea that politicians can be bought and paid for, but they have to get themselves elected, re-elected every few years and that keeps them operating within the lines but for the supreme court, they have no consequences. they have these jobs by choice until the day they die and now, we see plain and simple they are behaving how they want. think about the scandal with justice alito. it does not seem to go away. now, there are more tapes. it is like, how do you think this is going to end up for him? he doesn't seem to care. >> no, it's like the bishops or something, like there is a whole cabal of people in charge and setting down the creed of how america is going to operate. i find it particularly shocking, having been born in the uk. this was exactly the kind of pattern that the original american founding fathers were created to fight. >> we can joke that martha, his wife, is the new karen, but there's nothing funny about it. >> are there really no consequences? every time anything comes out unlike there are no consequences? >> for impeachment you need congress. >> i mean, it seems egregious. >> no consequences. that is why it is so hard for someone to get confirmed on that bench. >> someone said to me well you know, it's the same thing. katanji brown jackson, she took beyonce tickets. i saw katanji brown jackson at the mark twain prize awards. i had to sit through a long comedy show and i am like, i feel really bad for you because if you're a republican on a private jet somewhere, this is really exotic instead of at the kennedy center. >> when we come back, joe biden is going to hollywood. here is a question. how much does star power help a campaign? we are going to dig in. we are president biden is going to hollywood this weekend for a star-studded fundraiser. expected to attend, president obama, george tony, julia roberts. hollywood stars coming out to sport president biden, does that move anybody who is on the fence to vote for him, or to come out and vote, or could it actually hurt in some way, or is all this just a fundraiser? >> i've been thinking about this and i've been screaming from the low rooftops, and i don't think people listen to celebrities on who to vote for, but i do think that they will listen to celebrities about issues. i think if a celebrity goes to estate and says voting rights are really important to me. clean water is really important to me here. no oil drilling is really important to me here. >> in a place that is their home state that they're connected to. [ inaudible ] when judge roy moore was running and charles barkley went there and said do not be a low information voter. you deserve more than this. he had an impact. >> i think the other big thing is, the biggest risk to my mind in november is people not voting at all, and lots of really disaffected millennial's who say we just don't get excited about this and i think what taylor swift is doing right now with her get out the vote campaign, all of her appeals, is actually having an effect. you can see that in terms of people signing up enough so right now i think what is more important that hollywood does is just tell people to get to the polls. >> i noticed you noticed genzyme. >> i did, too. >> jay-z place and landed. there like j-zed. >> what do you think about this? >> i agree that on issues it is important. i think that also, celebrities tend to try to play the field a little bit, not as much as business leaders, but they do want to be -- they will go out for democratic fundraisers, go out and register to vote without telling people specifically who to vote for. i think the people know. i think the money being raised is more important in this case, especially since right now, the biden campaign democrats do have a fundraising lead over republicans but given the hall that came in right after trumps conviction, that is something that is wild. >> but it's also most likely designed and timed. donald trump needed a really positive headline after the conviction, and we would be full's to think that wasn't orchestrated so he could say and look what i just -- >> they had that fundraising email ready to go the second the verdict dropped. it's part of their fundraising strategy to be like look at how aggrieved i am. look at how much i am being persecuted, but i think the fundraiser in hollywood is important to help keep that going because i think the amount of money being spent right now for so many low information voters out there -- you look at the polls and see how many people are really engaged in paying attention right now, the only way beyond celebrity saying go out and get to the polls, to engage in front of them, is to spend ad dollars right now to inform them about what is at stake. >> and you need those dollars for down ballot races because we know on the republican side is not going to go there. lera trump already said we are keeping the money but can we just talk about the hypocrisy two months ago when president biden had the massive fundraiser at radio city and republicans went after it. it cost this much money, it's revolting. fast-forward, they are throwing fundraisers for him in silicon valley at 50 grand a clip. >> they throw retaliation fundraiser. his can i have one i'm going to be twice as big it's going to be huge. >> they will use this weekend and say look at joe biden, with hollywood elite disgusting. he's not a roman, he is not standing for america when they're doing the exact same thing with just a different flavor of rich people. >> that's an interesting question because it presupposes that republicans care about the boxy. especially when you look at all the people who've come back to trump, we mentioned earlier the big meeting trump had on the hill on wednesday. came to congress and everybody fell in line, even mitch o'connell, who hates him. they were all there so i think hypocrisy is no longer an issue for the party but something else is going on, and you know, if you've read that romney's book, a lot of people say is the fear. they don't have security and they understand that donald trump supporters are extremely ardent but also violent, as we saw on january 6. it is a member they're trying to a recent so there's a lot at stake this not just supporting donald trump. >> you saw lindsey graham. he spoke out against donald trump on january 6 that night. i'm done. the next day, he was at reagan national airport flying to south carolina and got all but physically attacked by trump supporters. a minute later, his mar-a-lago saying you've got a perfect handicap, sir. can we give a shout out to liz cheney? she's one of the few people who is actually been totally consistent all the way through and boy, has a cluster. >> it has. i want to talk about this, though, because celebrities may be coming out for president biden, but you know who is not? studios. there is this movie coming out about donald trump, the apprentice and it's already gotten amazing reviews but there's a really good chance people don't get to see it. studios are shying away. they don't want to buy this thing. they don't want to put it out there. what does that say about where we are as a country? is that not showing that business leaders don't want to get offsides with the next potential president? that feels very russian of us. >> it certainly does. there's actually a really big shift right now in the movie business away from having distribution with controversial documentaries and films, so this comes at the end of a big trend we are seeing which is really scary and there have been great movies about russia, about china, about the middle east which have not been distributed, so the fact they are running shy at this one is part of a pattern about control. >> absolutely. >> that is a problem and then there is the fear that we've already discussed around politicians that we've talked about in terms of business leaders. do you want to get on the wrong side of donald trump before november? [ inaudible ] after the right wing won a lot of seats in the european elections he said let's not normalize populism. let's call it out. i'm going to call an election and face it down. it's a massive gamble. he might lose it but the fact is, he's trying to tell the western world, including america , let's stop normalizing right wing populism and call it what it is and fight it. >> were you surprised? people keep thinking the trump effect is here. >> it's absolutely all over europe. people like steve bannon have been very active trying to create a broader right-wing populist movement but yes, europe is absolutely looking at the same pattern as in america right now. >> all right, i'm going to go with my colleagues, lisa lehrer and elizabeth diaz. they just came out with a book calling "the fall of roe." a lot of people are saying roe versus wade was overturned because donald trump was elected president and that is in part true, but it was really a long running plan by conservative legal scholars, by pro-life advocates to overturn this decision, and it was also a really bad slip for the left for pro-choice people to believe that roe could not be overturned until they just took their eyes off the ball. that's one of the great things about this book. i cannot emphasize how well reported it is, how beautifully written. when barack obama was elected, the belief that roe was going to be forever, the belief that we are on a completely progressive track in the united states was something that not just people who support abortion believe. it was something a lot of people believe. the trump era was such a shock to so many, but one of the reasons is because there was complacency and i think lisa and elizabeth did such a good job of explaining this, especially in light of what we saw this week with the supreme court in the mifepristone decision. that was thrown out not because we had nine supreme court justices who support a woman's right to choose. it was thrown out because they said the people who brought this case just don't have standing. they are the very same people who helped get row overturned. >> okay, but we see year after year look at the federalist society. they know how to get organized. >> they're willing to play it out over years and decades. they are really patient. >> the state of north dakota for passing a measure setting an age limit on people running for congress, because there are some really amazing politicians over the age of 80, i think we should keep them. they are literally grandfathered in but the average age of the u.s. senator is dead. like there are just -- everyone is so old. we are one of the oldest governments on the planet in terms of the average age of politicians and it's just time. people should be able to retire and spend time with their mega- donors and i think this is a good first step, and i was surprised to see it, and i think it's nice. >> all right, i'm giving it to the head of the consumer finance protection bureau. they do not give a lot of love. republicans have hated it from the jump because he wants to protect consumers from fraud and best -- bad business practice. they've tried to defend it if i do say it's unconstitutional and illegal and yet they keep doing good things in this week, what they did was next to vice president harris, they announced that they are going to propose a rule that will make it so that medical debt can no longer be applied to credit scores, which is going to be huge for millions of americans. it is not the biggest, sexiest policy but it is a policy that's going to help people one in five american households has medical debt right now. typically around $4600. >> and it's not their fault. >> and a lot of times you have bills that stack up that if you call them and challenge them they're going to know, oh, you don't owe that money actually are there was a mistake in your insurance. but, it is currently negatively impacting their credit score and affecting their lives. my one concern with this is that because it is so late in the rulemaking process is that it won't come into effect until next year and if trump wins then it's a trump policy and he gets credit for it. >> my mvp, and remember, it could be the best week or the worst week but it's got to be a big week and mine had a huge one. not back elon musk. tesla shareholders reapproved his 45 billion dollars pay package. that basically pays them back for buying twitter. it's like you got twitter for free, despite employee complaints, harassment complaints, space x, cringe worthy content a lot of people do not approve of. for the company shall -- shareholders they just told the world tesla is musk and musk is tesla and for this week he is winning. i don't love it or cosign it. >> to drive a tesla? >> i live in new york city. thank you all for being here and remember, alex's especial is out now on mac's and he's getting a tony for it this weekend. congratulations. we will be right back after this.
