a very good day to all of you from msnbc world headquarters here in new york. welcome to alex witt reports. we begin with breaking news in israel. new pictures of the emotional moments four hostages are reunited with their families, after being rescued during a daring daytime raid in central gaza. these pictures were taken at the hospital and provided by the israeli prime minister's office. those rescued include this woman , noa argamani, who became the face of the hostage crisis when harrowing video surfaced after her abduction on october 7th. the other three hostages range in age from 21 to 40 years old, held captive for nearly 250 days. we are going to have a live report from tel aviv in just moments. meanwhile, president biden reacting to the news during a visit to paris today, as commemorations continue around the 80th anniversary of d-day. he joined french president emmanuel macron for a day of events, and ending with a state dinner, and that starts this hour. we have reporters and analysts in place covering all of these developments. we begin with raf sanchez joining us from tel aviv. welcome. tell us more about this rescue and about how these hostages are doing now. >> reporter: alex, we just came from the hospital in the tel aviv area where the four hostages you see on the screen were brought after they were rescued from gaza. the israeli military says they are in good condition. now, there are families celebrating across israel tonight, but the face that is best known around the world is that of noa argamani, this 26- year-old woman, scene, hands outstretched in terror, as she was taken on the back of a motorcycle into gaza. you see her on the screen reuniting with her father. we met her father on october 8th, less than 24 hours after his daughter had been kidnapped. the worst day of his life. he was, as you can imagine, a broken man, and we saw him just an hour ago at this hospital having spent the afternoon holding his daughter once again, and it's hard to overstate the joy, just radiating from this man, having his only child back in his arms. now, this is not a story without any sadness. her mother has terminal brain cancer. she is in another hospital in tel aviv it has been her dying wish for these eight months to hold her daughter once again, and we are told that she is going to be reunited with her mom sometime later this evening local time. in terms of the raid, it happen in central gaza in broad daylight, and rear admiral daniel hagari, the spokesman for the israeli military described earlier. take a listen. >> this was a high risk, complex mission, based on precise intelligence conducted in daylight in two separate buildings, deep inside gaza. this is what we do in israel. we risk our lives to save the lives of our hostages. >> reporter: alex, we are still learning more details about this raid, but the idf said that noa was held in one apartment building, and the three male hostages, who were also kidnapped from the nova music festival on october 7th, held in another apartment building about 200 meters away. the israeli military said that it hit bull department simultaneously, and with the israeli commandos had the hostages safe, they gave the agreed-upon code word, which was, we have the diamonds. we have the diamonds. that was the phrase that echoed in the command center here in tel aviv, the idea of saying there was an enormous moment of elation, but while there is celebration in israel tonight, alex, there is grief in gaza. the health ministry in hamas run gaza is saying 150 people were killed in the course of this israeli raid on central gaza. it happened at 11:00 a.m. in a crowded marketplace. officials in gaza are saying a large number of civilians have lost their lives here. the israeli military says their forces came under intense fire as they extracted the hostages, and that they had no choice but to call in air support. they were insistent this was very, very targeted fire, but of course, this is just the latest in what has been a very long string of incidents in recent weeks, where israeli fire appears to have taken the lives of innocent people inside of gaza. alex. >> wonderful news about the hostages, but let me ask you about this last point. does that demonstrate to the world the way hamas embeds itself within civilian communities? if you are telling me that these four were rescued in two separate targeted attempts to get them, successful as it was, and up to 150 palestinians, presumably, many of them innocent, were killed, does it just go to further show the world what hamas does and how they hide? >> reporter: that is, certainly, what the israeli military is saying. they are saying that hamas, cynically, help these hostages in a crowded area in central gaza, that these hostages were being held in apartment buildings, three or four stories high, and in these buildings, you had ordinary palestinian families living in some apartments, and you had armed guards holding the hostages in others, and they say that the hostages were moved repeatedly, but that they were very often held in these crowded public areas. alex, it was very interesting, noa argamani in a conversation with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, earlier today, said to the leader of israel, i haven't spoken in hebrew in such a long time. we know that she was being held alone. today, at the time of her rescue, that comment seems to indicate that she was being held on her own for significantly longer than that, that she may have been separated from the other hostages, and we have heard a variety of stories over the course of talking to freed hostages from gaza. in some cases, they were held in tunnels in large groups. people sometimes from the same kibbutz being held together, and other times you have hostages held completely on their own, and the indication at this point appears to be that noa argamani spent quite a long time on her own, and it may be that the first hebrew she heard in a very long time was that if the israeli special forces, who burst in the door to rescue her. >> if this is someone who was allegedly moved around from place to place, and you described these three reinforced apartment buildings as being occupied by ordinary palestinian civilians, and yet, she would have armed guards around her. is there any way to escape thinking that some of these palestinians were aware, that at least, some high-value person was there among them? have you ever talked in your travels and while reporting to palestinian citizens, who thought there might have been a hostage nir oz? >> reporter: alex, it's a very difficult question to answer. we are, obviously, not able to get inside of gaza without being escorted by the israeli military. we aren't able to speak to the people of gaza about what they have gone through these last eight months. hamas is among many things, an authoritarian group that governs gaza with an iron fist. it's a complicated movement. it has a lot of popular support, but it does not hesitate to crack down on those who defy it, so it is very difficult to say what those palestinian civilians living inside that building, where hostages were held, it's difficult to say what they knew. it's difficult to say what they didn't know, and it's difficult to say what they would have been afraid to discuss, publicly, even after. >> okay, raf sanchez, thank you very much for the news. we appreciate that. let's quickly bring in peter baker. we have a lot of things to talk to you about, but one quick question on this, what has been the reaction to israel rescuing these four hostages alive? in the big picture, how does this factor into overall opinions on israel's actions? does it soften any critics? >> reporter: i am here in paris where president biden is, of course, visiting with president emmanuel mccrum, and the present, you showed him earlier expressing great gratitude and happiness that these hostages have been rescued. jake sullivan believes the statement think this was done, in part, with american help. my colleagues at the new york times have talked to intelligence officials, who say that the americans have been part of this operation, that they provided intelligence and logistical support. they were not on the ground. they were not providing military support, but they were helping out, in terms of finding these hostages and figuring out how to extract them. this is kind of a moment, where we see the cooperation, that has been behind-the-scenes between the americans and israeli governments over the last eight months, since the october 7th attack on israel. i think there is a great happiness among the americans, that there is some good news here. there are still many hostages left behind, including americans, who have yet to be found and rescued, so of course, what you heard from the president today is he wants israel and hamas to agree to a cease-fire proposal so the rest of the hostages can be released. >> peter, stay right there. i have a bunch of questions to ask you as we go to jay gray in paris. we are raiding -- awaiting the arrival of the president. with the present commenting on the hostages during this very busy day in paris, what did he say? >> reporter: the president continued what is been a primary focus of his visit here to france, talking about the importance of allies, and i've using his words, to support freedom and democracy around the world, but he did begin his comments today with talk of a hostage rescue in gaza. >> before i begin my remarks, i want to echo president macron's comments welcoming the safe rescue of four hostages that were returned to their families in israel. we won't stop working until all of the hostages come home, and a cease-fire is reached. it's essential to happen. >> reporter: the first lady and the president greeted today at the arc de triomphe by president macron and his wife. they laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier, and the street was lined with military, and flax, much to the chagrin of many. paris, usually a very busy motorway and walkway, and it was closed down as they moved on to the french president's official working residence. they had a working lunch and discussed a number of issues, including a naval buildup in the indo pacific, something barry berke -- they are both working on. there will be a state dinner this evening featuring the president. in essence, paying back president biden. he was welcomed with a state dinner in december of 2022 at the white house. that was the biden administration's first state dinner. >> okay, thank you so much. 7:12 p.m. in paris, and we did have some live pictures, which we can bring up again for you of the palace, where president biden is on route, running a few minutes late, but there will be an official state dinner this evening. there is an honor guard that will be greeting the president and first lady with president emmanuel macron and his wife. peter, back to you. in your latest article, you have written that macron hosting by in paris is honoring a not always easy bond . give me the significance of their meeting today, and that it's not just a bilateral meeting. they were looking at a grand state dinner in biden's honor coming up shortly. >> reporter: it is a grand state dinner. absolutely. it is meant to reinforce the transatlantic relationship. remember, they said over and over again, france is america's oldest ally, that france came to america's help in the revolution. america, of course, came to france's help twice in the 20th century, but that does not mean there are underlying tensions. they have disagreements about how to handle ukraine. they definitely have disagreements about how israel is handling the war in gaza, but those were basically left to the side today. at least, in public, this was a show of unity. you heard president macron say, we see things the same way today. he is emphasizing that unity and trying to make sure that friendship is highlighted in part, because of who is looming in the future, potentially. it is not lost on the europeans or the french, who may be the next president of the united states, if donald trump were to win. in fact, it was here in 2018 when president trump visited president macron, and the two of them were definitely at odds, a lot of animosity during that visit. i think when you hear president macron say to president biden, you are our friend, he is talking not just about america, at this particular president. >> as you well know, on friday, the president delivered a speech at normandy. here is part of that, peter. >> american democracy asks the hardest of things, to believe that it requires something bigger than ourselves, so democracy begins with each of us. it begins when one person decides there is something more important than themselves, when they decide the person they are serving alongside of is someone to look after, when they decide the mission matters more than their life, when they decide that the country matters more than they do. >> you were there. it was an address that straddled the line between an elevated patriotic commemoration and implicit political speech that contrasted his view of america's role in the world, but that is a -- of his republican challenger, former president donald trump. >> reporter: of course, the president did not mention trump's name. it would've been inappropriate in a setting like that, where the heroes of the date are remembered, but he was making a point. this other president, the one he is running against, doesn't believe in the things that europe and america traditionally have. he doesn't believe in alliances. he doesn't believe in internationalism, does not believe in democracy at home, so he was trying to make that case implicitly through this speech, echoing ronald reagan from 1984 when he gave his famous speech. of course, this is meant to tell americans the importance of their standing by ukraine. particularly, at this particular moment with vladimir putin's russia on the other side, just like ronald reagan stood against the soviet union. biden was essentially saying, the united states and its european allies have a commitment to ukraine to defend their territory against hostile aggression from moscow. >> before his speech, president biden held a bilateral meeting with ukrainian president zelenskyy where he issued an apology for delaying sending aid, this due to congressional infighting. was that moment scripted, peter? was it a moment of candor? do white house insiders know, and did they expect an apology? >> reporter: yeah, they understood that the president would try to make the president of ukraine understand what it happened. of course, president zelenskyy is pretty sophisticated. he does understand that it was a bit of a surprise. of course, he's not apologizing for himself, he is apologizing for the house republicans that were roadblocks to this aide, and in fact, what he was trying to say there is, we still have your back, despite those critics back at home, and i'm doing everything i can to fight for you, but you could tell in that moment, the fact that he felt compelled to apologize for the six month delay, which really put the ukrainians on their back foot on the battlefield, the challenges that face this president as he's talking about the things that he was talking about. to say the transatlantic alliance is strong, and the united states has ukraine's back. if there are people back at home in washington that i believe that, and have the power to blockade in that case. >> peter baker, thank you very much. safe travels. we will see you next weekend. so let's go now to the breaking news out of the nations capital. protesters are surrounding the white house demanding award to the end in gaza, and to america's support of israel. this is the latest in a series of pro-palestinian protest aimed at president biden and his administration. fencing and other security measures were put in place, and we are definitely monitoring the protest. we will bring you more as the situation develops. meantime, donald trump is doubling down on his retribution threats. whether it could impact his sentencing. we are back in 90 seconds. seen all these or, is he making a promise to himself? >> it's a bit of both. for months, trump has been saying that, i am your retribution. this is been a talking point for a very long time. at the same time, i think trump really wants to have his vengeance. he has his personal vendettas and grievances, but just on what trump is saying about how he wants to weapon eyes the drum -- justice department, that is really disingenuous. he was always going to use the justice department and the fbi in the way he wanted to. he wants to have his loyalists run the justice department. he wants his loyalists running the fbi. he wants to turn it into an executive branch, a cabinet position, so that he can insert his own personal inference. you hear it publicly. for him to say, it has now been weaponized against me, now i have no choice but to go after my political enemies, that is totally disingenuous. >> charles, trump's sentencing recommendations are due on thursday, and his presentencing probation report, that is due before july 11th, and judge merchan granted another request, to allow todd blanche to be with trump for the probation interview, which will be done remotely. what can you tell us about this process, and why trump's lawyer feels the need to be there with him? >> alex, trump is unusual in the sense that you don't typically find someone, who is looking at probation or this sort of process, who is running for president. least of all, who is the leading candidate for major party, so i think that brings nuance to the questions that will be asked around donald trump. what he does normally, how he does it, and the things that the probation officer is going to look to get insight on, in terms of making the recommendation i suspect that judge merchan is doing this so he can remain as apolitical as possible, and that he is aware of the fact this is already been shipped publicly as a narrative that everyone is out to get donald trump, and that this process is rigged against him. this is a means of sin, look, after being convicted of felony counts, you have had every opportunity of fairness and transparency with respect to representation, that most people would not have and then some. judge merchan is making sure that all the eyes are dotted and t's are crossed, and making sure that whatever recommendation comes is not a surprise, and is something that donald trump, at least, has representation to participate in through the process, which is not something that is always guaranteed. >> judge merchan is remaining as apolitical as possible. you write that donald trump has every plan, if he is re- elected, to make them public enemy number one and go after him. >> look, donald trump really doesn't want to go to jail. that has been communicated far and wide inside his circle, and what trump doesn't know and what his lawyers don't know is, whether the district attorney's office will recommend a jail sentence, and whether judge merchan and his distraction will impose that or impose a lesser sentence, but what trump does now is that if he is sentenced to jail, he will personally blame judge merchan. he will hold him responsible and lay the blame squarely at his feet, and how that will manifest, as we expect, is for him to hold rallies and blame judge merchan to his supporters. he will go on truth social and blame judge merchan. he will levy the attacks he's already levying against judge merchan, but it will explode in magnitude, because trump will feel so personally hurt, wounded and aggrieved that he will want to go after the judge. what we don't know is the effects of that. his supporters have this track record of listening to trump when he airs his grievances, and then acting on them, and all it takes is for one supporter to go after judge merchan, and things could get very ugly. >> very ugly. charles, trump's threats of revenge and his social media calls for members of the january 6th committee to be indicted, will those be in his probation report? will they be a factor in his sentencing? >> i think public statements that donald trump has made will, invariably, make it into the calculus around his ultimate sensing, whether it is from the probation report, or observations that judge merchan has made about donald trump in the public. at the end of the day, what is concerning is donald trump's respect for the rule of law, and when you are a judge that is making a sentence, or imposing a sentence, your thinking about the level of accountability that the defendant, and now convicted felon will show to the rule of law. donald trump's complete disregard for that, his complete disregard for the gag order, repeatedly, throughout the course of the trial, will no doubt, be some factor, in terms of how judge merchan makes his decision around sentencing. regardless of whether the probation officer actually puts that in the pre-probation report, or the citizen report, this is something that will play a role. where donald trump ends up on july 11? >> let's listen together to what former federal prosecutor harry littman is predicting if trump does not win. he said, it's going to be a couple years until the door slams on trump. by that point, either he will be president and trying to take a wrecking ball to the system anyway he can, or he will be a multiple defendant. if he doesn't win, he has an appreciable chance of dying in prison. is this a concern, hugo? that he shares, that trump worries about that, or his defense team? literally, that he could die in prison? >> i don't think they are thinking that far ahead. the one thing that was communicated to me in the last week or so was, trump really doesn't want to spend any time thinking about jail. he knows he doesn't want jail. he is telling his lawyers, that is the one thing he needs to avoid, so he is not spending time thinking about it. they did have a meeting on thursday evening after the verdict came down. trump went back to trump tower and huddled with his advisers. >> very quickly, this is an important point that we want to share with you. of course, we are looking at the president and first lady arriving at the palace in paris for a steak dinner. i absolutely can't go without mentioning the beautiful dress that jill biden is wearing. that is absolutely stunning. bridget macron looks equally stunning. you see the four of them, and this will be a remarkable state dinner. running just about a half an hour late from when it was scheduled to be, but it's the culmination of several remarkable days commemorating the 80th anniversary of d-day. these two men have been side-by- side in various places in normandy, france. notably, wrapping up having also visited the american cemetery earlier on thursday. it has been quite a trip marking 80 years since june 6th and d-day, which really turned the tide for america and for the european allies in preserving democracy and saving the entire continent, and by extension, the world, from the threat of the nazis. it can be underscored, the remarkable event that was honored on june 6th. there, we see the two first couples of both france and the united states going into the palace for what promises to be a beautiful evening together. charles, let me ask you a question about judge merchan, who on friday, flagged both sides to a facebook post to claim to know the verdict before hand. is it significant? could it be just a comment from somebody seeking attention? >> alex, it's hard to say. i think it's something that people should be aware of, and i think judge merchan, as someone who did a commendable job presiding over the trial, is simply attuned to anything that could give rise to the notion of something that went incorrectly during the trial. in this case, it's better to be safe than sorry. i suspect it is something that shouldn't generate a huge amount of concern, but judge merchan's attention to it, again, shows that he is paying all due respect to the gravity and severity of what could happen here, and he has crossed all of the i's and t's. i don't think it's something to hugely be concerned about, at least, not without any additional information substantiating this hunch, but judge merchan is doing his due diligence with this letter, and i think it's appropriate. >> so are the both of you, by the way, doing your due diligence. thank you. harsh words. you will want to hear what former house speaker nancy pelosi says about benjamin netanyahu's plant speech to congress. will she show up? >> i think, first, let's be really clear. this is a great day for these families, to see the images of families being reunited is really incredible. every hostage that was released is a step closer to ending the war. we have to reiterate at this moment with the white house bid, and reiterate that all hostages must be freed and thomas must accept the seas filed their on the table. once that happens we can free the hostages and end the war. i have been calling for a cease- fire since last year. the civilian toll has been horrific. we can all agree that on a day when hostages are released, we should celebrate that, and we encourage an immediate cease- fire and release of all of the hostages, and everyone is at the table to ensure the current proposal that the president is working on, not just with us, but leaders across the world, it's implement it. >> i used the world deaf word released. this was definitely a rescue. let's go to prime minister benjamin netanyahu set to address congress on july 24th. speaker emerita nancy pelosi was asked about that. listen to what she said. >> if you were still speaker, would you have invited him? >> no, absolutely not. absolutely not. i think that this is wrong. frankly, i didn't approve of his being invited the last time. i think it's going to invite more of what we have seen, in terms of discontent among our own people about what's happening there. let's try to have a two state solution to make it -- make peace in the region, rather than coming to the capital to draw protesters. >> she also questioned whether netanyahu will even still be prime minister by july 24th. do you agree with congressional leadership's invitation? will you attend? >> first, i agree with speaker pelosi. i think it was a mistake to invite netanyahu. i was not a supporter of netanyahu. on october 6th, the day before the terrorism attacks, and today, i think it is a distraction. the focus should be on a cease- fire agreement to end the war, and i think a lot can happen between now and that july date. we are all going to wait and see what happens, but i don't in any way -- i think there is going to be a large group of the democratic caucus, depending on where we are in the war at the time, that will not attend. speaker pelosi is absolutely correct. this is not the time for this, and unfortunately, it's a lot of politics from speaker johnson. that should be avoided. it's the time to focus on the cease-fire agreement and end the war now. >> hold on, are you going to attend or not? >> i will make the decision as it gets closer. as of today, i don't think you should be coming to congress at addressing us while we don't have a cease-fire agreement. a lot of us will wait and see where the war is at, and where the actions of all of the governments, particularly, the cease-fire agreement, if accepted by hamas, is out before he comes. >> let me go to president biden's executive action on immigration. the hispanic caucus has expressed disappointment with the move, and you said that it only addresses half the issue. as a member of the department of homeland security committee and an immigrant yourself, what is missing? i want to first reiterate, president biden, when he was running, and also on his first day in office as president, introduced a comprehensive immigration reform package. a big part of that package was border security and enhancements, and a larger part of that package was creating pathways to citizenship, guest worker programs, humane systems around asylum. that piece of his original proposal still needs to be addressed. i think an enforcement only approach is not the right approach. i agree with my hispanic caucus colleagues. we need to have additional pathways. we need to have a humane asylum system. i am encouraged. the white house, there is some signal there could possibly be other actions, some other initiatives, executive orders, possibly, coming down in the next few weeks, and i'm hopeful that happens, but an enforcement only approach is only dealing with half the issue. the other half has to be the major humane crisis that we have. immigrants have contributed incredibly to this country. this idea that we will turn our back on people to contribute every single day, i think it's shameful. it's not who we are as americans, and as a proud immigrant myself, i became a citizen in my early 20s. every single young person should have the same opportunity that was given to me. >> california congressman and our friend, robert garcia, thank you for joining us. 15 million people are under a heat dome. just say that and you start sweating, right? (♪♪) new revelations in the financial disclosures from the supreme court justices. those disclosures made public friday show four of the justices reporting earnings from book royalties and advances, and justice clarence thomas revealing fresh details about vacations paid for by a billionaire. gabe gutierrez has more. >> reporter: supreme court justice, clarence thomas, for the first time, is officially disclosing a controversial 2019 trip to bali, with billionaire, harlan crow. the acknowledgment in thomas's financial report comes after a report last year from propublica that detailed his secret, lavish vacations paid or by top republican donors, and a longtime friend of the justice. thomas is also disclosing another trip that same year to california with crowe. the report only includes want -- lodging expenses. thomas had flown on harlan crow's jet, a more modest image than the justice has projected. >> i prefer the walmart parking lots to the beaches and stuff like that. there is something normal to me about it. we met at the time, thomas said the trips were a form of personal hospitality that justices did not have to report. now, his disclosure reports of the two trips had been inadvertently omitted from his 2019 report. as for his colleagues, justice ketanji brown jackson reported receiving a $900,000 book advance, +4 concert tickets worth $3700 from pop superstar, beyonci. and, justice sonia sotomayor disclosed $56,000 in book royalties. the supreme court adopted a new code of conduct last year, although critics say there is no way to enforce it. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you for that. let's bring in kimberly atkins, political analyst, boston globe columnist, and cohost of the sisters-in-law podcast. welcome, it's good to see you. what is your reaction to this new clarence thomas revelation? do you think the details of his financial disclosures, as a surprise? >> i don't think they come as a surprise at all, particularly, in one of the cases. the trip had been reported on, and suddenly, he discovers six years later that it was an oversight that was committed, and now that is being disclosed at this time, but it still does not explain the heart of the issue, which is that harlan crow is a deep pocketed person with conservative interests, who has pushed those interests in washington, and by taking these lavish vacations with them, being in that proximity, that really casts a shadow over justice thomas and issues about just how objective he can be, just as much, if not more so as it is with the january sixth cases, considering his own wife is a witness to what happened on that day. >> clearly, this is to your point, giving further fuel to the concerns about thomas's ability to make impartial decisions, but that last part of gabe gutierrez's report, when you say there is an ethics code that cannot be enforced, i mean, what do you do with that? >> that is in the hands of congress. the ethics code that covers the supreme court, unlike other federal judges, it holds that the supreme court justices themselves decide if there has been a violation of that code. it's the honor system, and we have seen the justices being very unwilling, at least, some of them. they have been very unwilling to adhere to that honor code. congress can make it mandatory. they can do something like create some sort of independent outfit within the judiciary that decides, no, you must recuse in these cases, or you must return the value of what was given to you, but until congress acts, this is where we are. >> is there anything that can be done, specifically, about clarence thomas? his situation is flagrant and extreme. >> yes. it is. the answer, in a nutshell, is no, until the rules are changed. justices can be removed by impeachment, but we have seen in recent years, the impeachment power, basically, be eroded by the refusal of the senate to uphold their part in that, and i don't think that would be anything different here. i was hoping, at the very least, the chief justice would speak publicly about the need to protect the reputation of the court and the public's trust in it, but he has decided not to do that either. justice thomas is acting as he has always been allowed to do. >> let's turn now to the justice system, with attorney general merrick garland, who is facing criticism, for how he is handling a recent barrage of republican attacks on the justice system, and it comes after a grueling congressional hearing on tuesday, where garland hit back at republicans, threatening to hold him in contempt, unless he turns of her audiotapes from president biden's interview with special counsel, robert hur. let's take a listen. >> i will not be intimidated and the justice department will not be intimidated. we will continue to do our jobs free from political influence and we will not back down from defending democracy. >> so, you, kimberly, is one of those that wish is that ag garland had taken a more aggressive position during the hearing, and in your new op-ed, you write, "i know attorneys general are not politicians, nor should they be, but in this moment, we need them to be fierce defenders of the rule of law. garland barely meowed." what were you hoping to hear from him that you didn't? >> he sort of treated this as if it was normal times, sort of refusing to comment on any pending case before the courts, including the prosecution, the pending federal prosecutions of donald trump, and choosing only to answer the questions as he was directed outside of that one part of the opening argument . at this point, when the justice department itself is under constant and consistent attack from the right wing, claiming that it is weaponized against donald trump, it's something that is absolutely not true. this was an opportunity for him to blend every question he knew was coming his way, by pointing that out, by pointing out there are three democrats, as we sit here, high-profile democrats, that are under indictment by this very same justice department, and that anyone claiming that the justice department is weaponized against them, is really trying to signal what they would do, and that is in the person of donald trump. donald trump is on the record saying that he would prosecute his political enemies. that should've been in the first line of merrick garland's comments about what real weaponization is. i don't think he is about attorney general, but i think when the misinformation is coming at a constant pace from the other side, he needs to speak more directly and more firmly in protection of the department he heads. >> let me ask you a flipside approach, could there be a legitimate or legal reason -- you are a lawyer, what could that be? >> consistency, attorneys general are not politicians. merrick garland is a quieter spoken, mild-mannered guy. he makes for a very good judge, but at this point, he is the head of our justice system. our federal justice system. that is not just about the substance. it, also, in this moment has to be about style and messaging, not just against republicans, but for the american people, so they retain the trust of that institution. that is part of his job now too. >> kimberly atkins stohr, come see me again soon. thank you. a remarkable life and an unforgettable photo. we are remembering both, next. keep those expectations with reliable ground shipping. thanks brandon. with usps ground advantage®. ♪♪ when you see what it's really like when our skin touches wool... you see why we need downy free and gentle with no perfumes or dyes. it not only makes your clothes softer, it is gentle on your skin. it breathes life into your laundry. we're talking about practicing-- practicing good financial strategy. ...by cashbackin. what'd you think i was talking about?
