The sleeves up because we are 235 days away from the election. Every day we are getting closer. The stakes get even higher. This week President Biden and donald trump wrapped up their primaries and other presumptive nominees. At the same time, all four criminal trials against trump are facing even more delays. In georgia, District Attorney forney willis can proceed with her case. With that, lets bring in our night and get ready because i could not be more excited about who is joining because they are the future stars of journalism in this country. Wilson joyce us. Reporter for the hilltop and how it university. Some of her recent interviews Stacey Abrams and funny willis. Im thrilled you are here. The general election is on and its a race between two candidate we already know very, very well. For many, this lesson is about the future of democracy. It is also about getting out the vote. We talked about undecided voters but at the end of the day theres not that many people whose opinions are changing. Its about voter turnout. Tommy, you worked on the Harvard Youth poll. You have worked with john devoe paid a regular. How much our Younger Voters paying attention to this election . That is always the essential question, right . Our young people going to turn out . Can they be the decisive factor that the parties want them to be . The democrats need them to be. What we are seeing is numbers turning out that looking a little bit lower on the top line. Of course, the key question is how will they turn a in Battleground States . We have seen that specifically the Biden Administration handling of the war in israel has been something that young people, especially progressives have been to satisfied with. People have been reading a little bit too much into National Polls that really have a very small sample size on voters. Love these polls its only 1000 voters. If you take the youth sample its 200, 300 voters and you try to go beyond that is only a couple dozen. You have to exercise a little bit of skepticism when you look at some of these headlines and it is still early in the process. The Biden Campaign is just wrapping up. I would encourage everyone to wait a little bit before drawing conclusions about young people. Well 2020 set a record for Younger Voters, over half went to the polls and their support for President Biden was decisive. It was overwhelming. You think you can count on them again . I think we are seeing young people turn out. We know that young people turn out to vote less than older generations do. I think we are seeing this you specifically with the number of people voting uncommitted. Maybe a little bit less faith in the incumbent president moving forward. I think that this is telling for young people and i dont speak for all young people. I think its telling we cant be afraid of doing something a little more out of bounds. I think joe biden and whoever else is interested in getting their bid in for president should be in tune to that. I know young people you were kind of alluding to it are not a monolith. Young people vote for x or y. When you think about what you are reporting and when you talk to people on your campus, what are the most important issues . Reproductive rights . Climate change . The war in israel . Absolutely i think we are in a unique position with his upcoming election cycle because both candidates have been president and observed president will terms, so voters are cognizant of their successes and their failures. Thats going to go into consideration as they are considering who they are going to vote for. Also, when president ial candidates are creating these campaigns, they are going to have to try hard to earn young voters trust and appeal to whats important to young voters. What do you think . I think the point that you made earlier is important about polling. Does not a lot of great polling on youth data. One poll i found interesting is connected by the generation left which is one of the only youth focused Polling Groups in the country. Hes just throwing the Harvard Youth poll in front of your face. I happen to know that generation are quite excellent. We saw youth voters in the 18 to 34 by 20 points for biden. This had about 5248, which is basically dead even. The fact that we are seeing polls or even that remarkably close is something that should be disregarded. I also think its really telling. The point you brought up about these both being president s, i think theres something fundamentally different about a president in the moment facing a crisis, which is someone who assesses, glories, triumphs and failures have been forgotten because it is four years ago and on top of mine for voters. You think young people dont realize that . For so many young people this is the first or second time voting. When democrats are saying do you remember what its like four years ago . You remember what its like having donald trump is the president during covid . A lot of young people who are 18, 19, 20 they dont. Its a good point about the the client. If you look at likely voters, you isolate for that group who are the ones who matter once going to be coming to the polls in november, you will find a we found this semester in one of our polls that is a decline in support but a small one a maybe a couple of points and those who support biden over trump. Think the question is what will turnout look like among young voters . That is something that could be happening under the hood and could be threatened by the chances. The other thing i will note as much as theres always an Information Engagement Issue for young voters thats the challenge the biden agenda is overwhelmingly popular. The question is is the Biden Campaign ramps up now really enters Campaign Mode fully, can they communicate successes in a way that resonate with young people and get them to turn out to the polls . Today in georgia, the judge decided the d. A. Funny willis i know you have interviewed her she can proceed with this case against donald trump. We did here today in the new yo going to be delayed. Young people on campuses, they following these trump trials . I have seen quite a mixed response. I would say on howards campus specifically of course funny attended Howard University so we have a little bit more of a stake in it than elsewhere. Do you think students are paying attention to these trials that donald trump is going through, or are they hearing what they learned social media about the gold trump standards . I think students of following issues and not candidates. It means theyre not into it about whats happening in georgia or new york. We know what we care about. I think students in my campus care about reproductive rights, transgender rights, the conflict between israel and gaza. If you like looking towards where candidates stand on those issues has been more for polls with people of rh deciding who should i give my vote to. I dont think they are following stuff like that. Even though it could and probably will have huge implications for who is our next president. Its fascinating. Stanford is not a politically engaged campus. Since october 7 we have seen a resurgence of activism and away we havent seen since the vietnam war. Im not sure how lasting thats going to be. Im not sure what impact it will have on how people vote. It feels different than it did a year ago. It feels different than it has in my time at stanford. I cant tell you what kids are going to do with that but they are thinking something they havent in the past and there fired up. My impression from pulling young people as a people value voters. They are voting on the feeling that a candidate accords with the fundamental beliefs less so than technical specifics of a given policy issue. When it comes to the issue with israel and gaza, i think that for a lot of young people, there is a frustration because they want a symbolic action that accords with their values. The context of palestine but diplomacy the difficult thing is it happens under the table quietly and subtly. Then its too late. Then its too late. It has been documented with the Biden Administration approaching conflicts and gaza, it has been public announcement saying one thing that it are supporting for israel and Behind The Scenes this pressure on netanyahu to walk back some of the violence in gaza. Its interesting about how they can bring communications in line with that reality, that difficult diplomatic reality. That is been a challenge for the Biden Administration. Donald trump, in some polls, he is clearly not doing better than President Biden but he is polling better today than he did last time around. Why do you think that is . Do you think it is this extension of culture wars and attack on will give them wokism . I know there is young men in this country who follow likes of joe rogan and surprisingly there seems to be sort of more support than the average person would think for donald trump. I think its an interesting question that i dont have a full answer to. What i can tell you is that what we are seeing is a lot of meat vacation on the internet. I would not discount the ability of a Surroundsound Culture to impact people in a subliminal way. You see these tiktok videos that are a couple of seconds and you keep scrolling. You not thinking about them too much. Every time you are inundated with the same message, you see President Biden fooling over. You see donald trump making some fussy remark. That is something that gets into your brain. The more these algorithms self reinforcing content, it becomes something to think about without knowing your thinking about it. Back at the age of these two candidates, anger, young voters to the point where they might not come out and vote. I think its angering voters, young voters apathetic. If we cant look at the ballot and see someone even remotely similar to us or who might have a similar Life Experience that deathly not what we are getting with these two candidates. I think its dismaying young voters and making them less likely to engage. To think the likes of the cornell west of rfk jr. Could excite young voters enough that they could end up being spoilers . I think thats the worry. As much as trump is almost the same ages biden the person we hear is too old much more often is biden. On one hand maybe thats because the parties have chosen different attack lines. I think theres some stuff since to this which is that young people see clips of joe biden stumbling on misspeaking. Trump, full of the other concerns that people have about him even though he mistakes all the time. He does so confidently and loudly and that is what gets on tiktok. How do you establish that . You do have ultimately the fundamental values. Have you signaled to them that even if you are older im still getting things done for you. That is what the Biden Campaign has been trying to do. The question is not how old i am but how old my values are. Thats what they are trying to hone in on purpose. I want to talk more about social media. We will take a quick break. When we come back. Why congress is talking down on tiktok. On tiktok. Have Heart Failure with unresolved symptoms . It may be time to see the bigger picture. A bill to force the sale the chinese on apple or been out right flew to the house. That never happens. Is with the center. For the 170 million americans addicted to tiktok videos the future aint looking good. Our night frame cap is with us. What you think . Is that i think is potential bama have a large and this may impact. I saw firsthand for a lot of offices receiving a lot of calls from young voters. Also, teenagers asking to avoid the van. I think its important to note that considering whether it will be important for young voters and how president ial candidates implement that into the campaign if they want to garner that vote. Do you think those young voters realize why the ban is potentially being put in place . Its not because they feel like the kids arent going outside to play baseball because they are on the tiktok. The issue is over National Security. Do you think those young voters realize that . I would say that probably for the most part they are not aware that that is an actual reason that it is on the floor. It is kind of unfortunate that they are not aware. I would hope that they looked further into the issue so that they were able to make an informed decision. I mean, listen. Social Media Companies dont use data well. I think, of course, there is the overtone which is that hold on. And i think you mean the user well they dont use it for good purposes. There using it very well but not doing so as many people would deem good. It is not just tiktok. I get it its a Chinese Company in that place into a bigger geopolitical barrier that has some legs to it. At the same time im sitting here thinking well, mehta has more data uses it with greater sophistication and historically we have many more cases in which the of used to poorly. Thats not to say tiktok isnt a National Security threat. It is to say and it was a great piece in the atlantic About What Social Media has done to childhood. I think that that, to me, which i think is honestly one of the prime causes of the Youth Mental Health crisis and a variety of other pressing issues, that is what i would like to see congress thinking more deeply about. We had tons of hearings about how big tech uses monopoly power. How big tech makes people self conscious of their bodies and appearances. This goes so much deeper than just selfimage. It is fundamentally about the way it works and we really. Its harder to listen to people rattle on about ticked up and when this is fundamental crisis producing crises in american dolts. Those hearings a great big entertainment shows. Before the hearings and after is all the bigtime lobbyists from those companies are entertaining those very lawmakers that is sitting up there rally against companies and nothing gets done. Caitlin, i see you nodding. Im assuming because its not just tiktok. All of these companies. When it comes to Data Privacy Laws and regulations we basically dont have any. Im with tommy. I dont think tiktok is unique other them it is a Chinese Company but is very well known for being a Chinese Company and for being really popular with young people. What i worry about when we take tiktok off the market and they can no longer an option is censorship yes the morsel censorship of people who rely on tiktok to get the message out. Thick about nonprofits, grassroot organizers. Young People Like Us who use it to i hate to say get an idea of what the political world is like but that is what we are using it for. I think taking it off the market is cutting off some very valuable ties between young people and the rest of the world. Is there a risk that that is what young people are using it for, tiktok, as their news source. All of you as journalists have a deep understanding of standards and Best Practices. You know as editors, all that gets left on the cutting room floor. As exciting and fun as it is unless it meets the standard there are no standards when it comes to the platforms. I would be hesitant to dismiss tiktok too quickly as a National Security threat. I will tell you the moment i stopped using tiktok. In june of 2022 Emily Bank A White a reporter wrote a story and tell you about how chinese authorities had a backdoor into accessing Sensitive Data on tiktok. After that, the Chinese Company travertine behind tiktok put hers and other reporters under surveillance. Putting journalists under surveillance a big nono. Became alleged in Court Filings that in 2018 tiktok was being used to track hong kong protesters. This goes a little bit beyond the conversations were having about and xenophon area at your conversations you have in free speech concerns our concerns to have. We should not be dismissive of how authoritarian regimes have been using technology to crack down on protesters, on these groups and journalists. I would note quickly that mehta like its rent tiktok has been complicit in genocide and has been to some extent for school at least a little bit cozy with authoritarian regimes. This and is a tick tim is not and its only perhaps in a unique way but a National Security threat and it probably is. I do think its worth broadening the conversation to meta which one of the Biggest Companies in the world and has more data and uses it. Do you worry that or believe that if tiktok gets band it only makes meta more powerful . I think its one concern. The other is regulators brushing her hand and saying we did it. We defeated social media. And reality, and is a Bigger Company that has more data and a long and fairly sordid history of using italys that we should disagree with. Lets go back to the point italian made. Could there be political fallout for these lawmakers who move forward and say lets ban this, right . Republicans are the one pushing it, right . They are republican donors saying we need to ban tiktok. Donald trump said maybe forget about it. Joe biden who needs to appeal to young voters right now, do you think there could be fallout that young people who use tiktok and always caitlin was saying could say, wait, you are already 80 years old. Now youre taking away my jam. You are not my guy. I certainly think so. I think we have this or nothing approach when it comes to tiktok. If we cant regulate it, we will ban it. You were saying, tommy, if the solution is to ban it we are not holding anyone accountable. We are not holding the regulators who have to keep meta up to standards. We are not creating standards or Best Practices for these companies. We are saying okay that, thats it, we are done. Really, the work is not yet they are. Young voters elected deal with consequences. Of the biggest worries about social media is the spread of misinformation. The biggest most viral story this week on the subject the one , im not proud but that i had been down the rabbit hole day in and day out and every night over. This doctored photo of princess Kate Middleton and the family. Put aside the question of where she is and i, too would like to know where she is. The manipulation in this photo raises all sorts of questions. On one hand, yes, people able to snuff it out immediately. On the other, what about next time and the time after that . Are you concerned that in this moment of ai, photos can be doctored overnight and we wont know the difference between the truth and a lie . [ inaudible ] i think that in regards to what we were previously speaking about pertaining to tiktok, i think the focus should be more regularly ai so that things like this cant occur. Unfortunately, i think effective regulation comes with collaboration. And working with ai companies to make sure that we are preventing situations like this from happening where people are able to dr. Fake photos. You can think of all the terrible implications that could come with that if it gets in the hands of the wrong people. Does this photo the weekend already week trust in our institutions, platforms . Its stunning. For a long time the photo in the video was kind of the Gold Standard of truth. You so i photo something you could know it is true and you could see it with your own eyes. Now for the first time, i think, we are seeing photos we have been able to edit photos for little while. For the first time you can generate a photo that fundamentally did not happen. Im not saying thats what happening Kate Middletons case but it brings to bear a really important question, which is what we do politically and as citizens when we are not really living in a shared reality anymore. When we cant be sure we are living in a shared reality or operating on information that is real and really any setting. Its a profoundly challenging thing. Regulators will have to grapple with it. Responses goes much deeper including how we educate people about consuming media. What do you think . We are approaching a time we cant believe the photos and videos. I would hesitate about saying how unprecedented this is. I spent a lot of last year dealing with doctored images. Thats a lot of what happened in the research of mark cassio dena former stanford present i was reporting on. These were papers that were 20 years old but they were splicing together images and putting together experimented results to make it look like something happened when it actually didnt. This was before ai tools were able to generate stuff like this. Being able to alter those images is Getting Better and better and better. Absolutely. It is incumbent upon places where i work. Stanford university where we are doing so much ai research and barreling ahead quickly to think about ai marketing, efforts to actually properly identified deep fake content. These are hard questions and not easily solvable. The race is already afoot. Its a little late to put the genie back in the bottle. The most important thing is for people to have skepticism. Is and that the scariest problem that stanford might be the Gold Standard. There are all sorts of bad actors that have this technology and who knows what they can do. Absolutely. Its clear that these are going to get manipulative more. Especially with the advent of pulse the new open ai video model was can generate very convincing video clips from just a text prompt. These will get shockingly better. We have seen a year ago yesterday when the lords Language Model was released and just in one year we have seen massive transformation. I think we really should be keeping an eye on this. Its going to get worse before it gets better. Is part of the problem with misinformation of people really like Conspiracy Theories . They want to push them. I think so. Especially for young people. What i think about ai is notable and notable from answers in the past when people have been not trustworthy with her documents is that it is democratic, right . Any of us could get on that and dr. An image. Not to give so much credit to ai, i think it has a long way to go. I feel like i know people could photoshop Kate Middletons photo a little better than she did. I feel like that whats happening is that everyone can access it. It makes trust kind of difficult unilaterally on every level. Is there good news . In terms of the Kate Middleton picture people cared enough and dug into it and got to the truth. Does this give you some sense of hope people demand the truth. Yes, i would say it gives me a sense of hope and media literacy. People arent taking things at face value. Especially considering ai and that support moving forward to ensure the truth is upheld and maintained. Think the trouble is what happens when its not Kate Middleton . What happens when its an issue that 5000 people care about and not to 50 million. I appreciate the point that misinformation is nothing new. Including visual misinformation. Its ability to amplify it. My friends ability to edit the photo to make them look better. As a photo that fundamentally existed. They may be touchup the blush but it happened. The ability to quit if you do the fundamentally never happened, to create a photo the never happened to pick people in places where other people that were never together and never in that place thats a brand new thing. In that sense, its a watershed moment. Its not to say there hasnt been highlevel misinformation in the past. I think it requires a real we think about how we approach misinformation in the public sphere. We will stay on this after the break. We say all the time the truth matters, but only if you see it. We will talk about the future of journalism on The 11th Hour when the nightcap continues. May the best bird win. Brick. You may be a legend on the court but youre an amateur up here. Heads up lar. With you realize it or not, we need Good Journalism for democracy to thrive. Theres a tough time. Talk about it all the time. It is not justified against misinformation. Recently there have been massive layoffs across the industry. Local newspapers are getting wiped out around this country. We, at this table, at the future of journalism right here. It is given me great, great hope. Natalia, what role does your College Paper play in the local community . With recent industrywide layoffs, there has been a great hindrance in reporting and reporting news journalism. Especially locally. People are fighting to keep their jobs. Thats why collegiate journalism is so important. It allows us to inform the public. Not just our local campus about issues that are important. And to supplement for the lack of reporting happening due to local papers losing funding, getting rid of them altogether. Caitlin, you are trying to separate fact from fiction in your paper. What concerns do you have about the future of journalism when you see that more and more outlets are shutting down every day . Let me start by saying i love Student Journalism and even more love local journalism. Why . In chapel hill is the oldest paper. We have a big service to our community because we are not just students pick one big part by getting students involved in local immediate is to create pathways to becoming actual professional journalists making more Sustainable Business practices. Local journalism means is waste to sustain itself in the future. Im happy we are sitting here talking better because thats only we can get done. But we are seeing young people, we talked about it in the last segment, fewer and fewer young people are getting their news from traditional news sources. Whether its a College Newspaper or local newspaper, National Newspaper or television program. How concerning is that . Thats a big issue. We talk about bias in the media lot. Its a pretty hot topic. The thing a lot of people dont seem to realize about these older, established newspapers is your that a lot of eyes that go into the story. If an individual person has bias, fine. Every person has opinions. The idea of you can correct for that by having so many different people with so many different views being is perfectly factual, you dont see that on tiktok or independent journalists. You can see individual people going gung amazing work. He will not have the same controls for quality. That is something that concerns me. Racing the baseline is important. To think the average person realizes that . No. I dont a lot of people understand what goes into it. Last year i talked to 10 people for every person i will quote. The thousands of hours of going to a big investigation. Thats just not something people have a conception of. Thats okay because that means you are putting out the most distilled quality product. It also means that people this talent the work that goes into quality journalism. Thats the issue. Quietly journalism is expensive. Right now people are saying i dont want to pay for it. I dont need to pay for it. Its a huge concern. The thing that people dont fully grasp is that local journalism is not just journalism that happens to cover local stories. For a very long time in americas history local journalism was the fabric of community. You could pick up a paper that will cover Ongoing Events in your town, county, and that would be how you engage cynically. Its really not a crisis of local journalism but local engagement. Not coincidentally as journalism and media we have seen a shift to a National Frame only. Of people only engaging a National Political issues allowing 70 things at the state and local level to go to never to be talked about. And meet important issues where a lot of the action happened at the local and state level dont get as much attention as they deserve. People not held to account in the same way. People often say they are tired of the news and find it super biased. When you are doing your reporting, do you necessarily think the news is biased, or are the people that just dont like the end result . As a news reporter, i wholeheartedly believe it is important for us to not be politically biased at all. However, i think there has been a great political shift in the landscape to where lyrical bias has been conflated with morality or moral bias. Especially over the last 10 years even more specifically i would say since the summer of 2020 in response to Police Brutality and Race Relations in america. There has been this shift, right . For that particular instance within the context, the unbiased coverage didnt tell the full truth. It lacked nuance. Thats why i also think its super important for there to be diversity in journalism so that there can be nuance in coverage of news and politics and people are able to tell the stories with nuance without it being conflated with political bias being a Student Journalist you also have student news. Often times as people get older, views hard and. Do you find your readers have more open minds or are they set in their ways. Especially when it comes to politics . Locash. In chapel hill we have an open mind student body. I think the onus is really on us as a Student Paper to me people where we are at. I really pushback on the idea people need to care more about news but a Speck On India that we had to make it a certain way. To me people where we are. The people getting news on tiktok or instagram we have the ability, especially students and young people to make news to meet those needs. My feeling about Student Journalism, and this is something i think people have also maybe not been so tuned into it wouldnt be tuned into if they are not. The thing about Student Journalism and often local journalism is better journalism. It is not just journalism covering local issues but covers local issues better than national publications. Something i watch a lot. Theres been lots of narratives spinning about my school. I think the way that i have watched publications like the times a Washington Post cover those issues has come at times, been unsatisfying, right . I can personally fact check claims. They usually get it mostly right. The slant, angle the exactly the of framing things often theres something missing. It is because they just dont have the local Western Context to base the real analysis. I totally buy it. I hear a lot of the different perspectives coming into journalism right now, which is really important. We always need to rethink the model. I dont really care the platform it is on but the quality needs to stay the same. It is not just about ensuring that we are putting hours into uploading responsibility. I love Student Journalism so much and i love my peers around the country doing amazing work standing up to people who otherwise dont want them to be doing that. I think about the parallels of Student Journalism is that yellow young people want to bring their own opinion, advocacy into journalism. That is unacceptable. Journalism is public. Requires individual sacrifice. Its good to have opinions and advocacy. We need that in the country and in all countries. That does not align with unbiased journalism. What was it like for you at harvard . The harvard crimson. You in the mouth of the lion during the Controversy Swelling around claudine. I lead the opinion section. The thing i was repeating over and over again what will these narratives are swirling around a better campus was we need to be able to say the sky is blue. There are some facts that are actually verifiable. They are objective. The thing that straight new sketches of in trouble by doing is the of the community and notion of objectivity we have to treat all the sides is not just you dont have to give them equal consideration. You treat them is actually equal in the substance of what they are saying. Is a former president ial candidate is a one in 2020 but he lost you have to pretend sometimes that there is validity when you know theyre not true. On our campus when i heard all these narratives going round they were often not true. Something i will tell my team is we as Opinion Journalists have the freedom to say this is not true. If someone tells me that a gigantic hoping di property once harbor, thats factually incorrect. You can count the number di administrators. You can make legitimate arguments that the right place of di at harvard if they are doing the right place. Its important to be able to say in all caps dei bureaucrats do not run harvard because they dont. Everybody is staying right here. When we come back, it is time for the mvps of the week.
