is there any significance to that particular day? >> the assumption is, by august, by the summer of 2024, the other cases, the case scheduled in may, and the case scheduled in march should have result. and so, there won't be delays caused by those other cases. the motions for the case should be heard by that time, they're allowed to file motions, i believe, within january. the state has already provided a discovery. we know that as a matter of practice, discovery will continue to be ongoing, the closer we get to trial. but they provided the bulk of the discovery already. the defense has to provide their discovery, the evidence they intend to use in the trial to the state in december, by december 4th. and then all emotions have to be filed in january. and then it's just a matter of scheduling those motions. imagine between january and august, that leaves plenty of time for those motions to be heard, and even appealed. and then a case that for trial. >> got it. okay, it makes sense to me now. so, when it comes to the trump legal team, they have actually appealed to the protective order that was issued by judge chutkan in the federal election interference case. an appellate court is going to hear our arguments on monday, and in trump's fraud trial in new york, the narrow protective order was temporarily elected on first amendment grounds. by the way, former president trump immediately began posting about the judges locklear, again. and today, he used her full name. why is this -- melissa, to hold donald trump to the same standard as other defendants? if on one hand folks say in america no one is above the law, why does it feel like donald trump continues to get concessions? >> because we take our rights of first amendment speech very seriously. so judges, especially appellate courts, don't want to infringe on and's first amendment rights to freedom of speech, unless it's absolutely necessary, unless there is a threat or intimidation or harm caused to another person. the thing about what he is doing, the rhetoric that he places on social media, is the it's very hard for the prosecution to suppose that those are actual threats. his followers, people who follow his ideology, we'll take those words into action. showing that connection can be very difficult to say that we are going to bar your constitutional right to say what you want to say within limits. so it's the setting of those limits that becomes difficult. >> these are trying times. melissa, thank you for making this all makes sense. melissa redmon, we appreciate your time. >> thank you. >> we have an update now on a case involving the police killing of breonna taylor, a federal judge declared a mistrial on thursday, in the civil rights case against former louisville kentucky police officer, brett hankison. hankison was accused of violating breonna taylor's civil rights, for filing ten straight shots into her apartment in the botched raid that resulted in her death in 2020. the jury deadlocked on two charges after three days of deliberations, federal prosecutors could decide to retry him, hankinson was facing life in prison if convicted. a lawyer for breonna taylor's family vowed that they would continue to fight for justice for breonna. when we come back, folks, control of congress could hinge on the new york high court's decision on how to draw the states district maps. i will lay out why these states are so high for democrats who are trying to even the playing field for 2024. field for 2024 (vo) sail through the heart of historic cities and unforgettable scenery with viking. unpack once and get closer to iconic landmarks, local life and cultural treasures. because when you experience europe on a viking longship, you'll spend less time getting there and more time being there. viking. exploring the world in comfort. the subway series? because it's hard to think critically about what you are seeing, while you don't have any context about what it is you are actually looking at. >> i think it's an education issue, i think it's a media issue, i think it's a conversational issue. i think we've all very clearly seen in the israel hamas conflict playing out online, and from the testimonies from people who are all over the world in the last few days, and the last few weeks. and i think that what was happening on tiktok, i've been a content creator for three years now, when it comes to politics, is i think the people we saw engaging with this letter, in an agreeable way, are people who are not traditionally engaged in politics or traditionally engaged on middle eastern issues that have been brought up in the last few years. i think what we saw are people who are not familiar, who know that there is something very deeply upsetting to people going on in the world right now, and are looking for reasons, and they're looking for information about it. they happen to find something that is full of a very hateful extreme ideology. i think if there have been more media literacy in schools, and understanding what we see on social media, i think if there had been more information in schools about conflicts, not just in the united states, but around the world, that we wouldn't see people who are not traditionally engaged in the space flocking to things like letter to america. because i've seen people on both sides of this different issue, come out and condemn people who were praising osama bin laden, saying this is not representative of people weo trn this area. >> i mean, victor, it was very confusing to me. it was straight-up misinformation. it made me think about all of the families who lost someone on 9/11. you know what, this misinformation, it's not new. this misinformation is not just happening on tiktok, it's happening on facebook, it's happening on the site formally known as twitter. and i think nowadays, we should be thinking about some solutions. there are a lot of politicians, including republican presidential candidate, chris christie, who said that the situation is to just ban tiktok. i don't know if that is actually going to solve anything. so what does an actual realistic solution? >> yeah, first of all, you are exactly right. first of all, i think we should totally condemn any single defense or justification on what osama bin laden did on 9/11. it's so -- like olivia said, they represent a very tiny extremes segment of the tiktok platform and the gen z electorate. but to your point, i don't think banning tiktok is any realistic solution. it seemed to me like a very short term -- to a very long term problem. and i think we ought to be very clear about what the solution is. in my view of that is, like olivia said, doing more to and act media literacy and information literacy. doing more to teach young people how to separate fact from fiction, truth from lies. it let's not kid ourselves, misinformation falling for conspiracy theories isn't just something that happens to young people, it happens to every generation. it goes back to the start of time. yes, social media does accelerated a little bit more, but we have people pulling for conspiracy theories throughout the generational spectrum. we have to think more about what are some of the realistic solutions than just banning tiktok. that's not going to make young people stop using social media. that's going to make people go to other social media platforms. that doesn't -- the amount of misinformation and conspiracy theories that might be spread. we're seeing this on other platforms as well. so i don't think that's a very realistic electorate nation. i think of to -- how we can craft algorithms better, think about information literacy in a more sustainable way. >> olivia, as you look towards 2024, what is heavy on your mind when it comes to young voters, young people online? >> i look for -- what we look for in 20 2020, the same exact thing, the spread of disinformation and misinformation. whether it's fake news, in a way, being spread on purpose, on accident. i'm looking to say if we're able to mitigate some of the false narratives that are being put out there. specifically to target young people. because that is specifically what is going on, they are targeting an informed electorate to deter them from voting. >> folks should follow some young content creators to know what they're talking about like olivia julianna and victor shi. victor, i love your podcast. i will be listening. happy belated birthday, olivia. thank you both very much for your time. i will chat with you again, very, very soon. thank you out there at home for watching symone on this saturday. i am symone sanders-townsend, you can catch me right here on msnbc, weekends at four pm eastern and anytime over on peacock, where i have new episodes on the msnbc hub every monday. and for more of the show, find us on instagram, the site formally known as twitter, and tiktok. politics nation with the great reverend al sharpton will start after a very quick break. so don't you go anywhere. you go anywhere (christmas music) ( ♪♪ ) weathertech gift cards have the power to wow everyone on your holiday list. offering a variety of american made products... weathertech! nice! like floorliners... cargo liner... seat protector... boot tray... cupfone... sink mat... pet feeding system... anti-fatigue comfortmat...and more. order the weathertech gift card instantly for the perfect gift at weathertech.com. my frequent heartburn had me taking antacid after antacid all day long but with prilosec otc just one pill a day blocks heartburn for a full 24 hours. for one and done heartburn relief, prilosec otc. one pill a day, 24 hours, zero heartburn.
