We are seeing some small signs of progress when it comes the aid for gaza, with the first trucks making their way across the border, maybe more coming, the House Of Representatives still does not have a speaker. Until they do, they cant pass any laws or allocate a new funding. They cant keep the government open for anything. They cant get aid to israel, they cant get a to ukraine. Their latest candidate, jim jordan, tried and failed three times to secure the gavel. Although he ultimately fell short, his candidacy and how close he came is a reminder of just how broken our system is right now. And this person, jim jordan, he came close to becoming Speaker Of The House, second in line to the presidency. He still denies in the 2020 election was free and fair. Thats where we. Were a number of candidates are now throwing their hats in the ring for the speakership. Many candidates almost hard to keep up with, including minnesota congressman tom emmer. His bid maybe over before it takes off, after donald trump said he does not support him. Pointing in part to his criticism of him following january 6th. Thats, right the former president of the United States, i know we are not surprised, but its worth restating, is getting involved in the election for the Speaker Of The House because he is mad that a leading candidate did not stand on the side of the insurrectionists. Thats whats happening. Ultimately, the gop is now back to square one and holds a closeddoor candidate form today. Regardless where this lands, and the length of the Pressure Campaign reveal something pretty sinister about the rod inside some factions of the Republican Party. Over the last week, as jim jordan continue to lose his support, his supporters lashed out aggressively. Received for Death Threats over his refusal to support jordan. Congressman joe ferguson of georgia said he also received Death Threats. And members of his family have become targets as well. He told Republican Senate closeddoor meeting that in the threats prompted him to dispatch a sheriff to his daughter school. His daughters school. And the wife of nebraska congressman don bacon said she started sleeping with a loaded gun after receiving Medicine Calls and texts. Behind closed doors, an ally of jim jordan framed this as basically the cost of doing business. Ohio representative Warren Davidson said it wasnt jim jordans fault that holdouts are getting Death Threats. They were just getting the threats because they voted against jordan. This about this behavior is not living up to what President Biden called for in his speech. Holding up our responsibilities as a great nation. Within normalizing the threat of Political Violence to their own members. Unable to elect a leader and unable to be a part of any response to multiple crises across the world. The president has the experience and wisdom to lead us through this. I was encouraged to see senator mcconnell out this morning on tv largely embracing the outlines of the package the president sent to capitol hill. And i think thats a sign it should have good sliding in the senate. We saw this complete dysfunction of the house. The house has to get together and constitute a house and begin to govern. After, all November 17th is coming up when the governor runs out of funding, the president has deployed to carry groups to the middle east to deter the iranians from escalating this conflict. It would be a gross unfairness and horrible if we had men and women serve on those ships and that dangerous part of the world until they are not going to get paychecks because people in washington cant get their act together. I wanted to ask you about, of course, congress, we will get to that. But also about this growing tension in the middle east. The president gave an Oval Office Address on thursday night. We just showed a quote from that. He also said something i thought was pretty interesting the day before, where he basically warrant israel, i heard, of not repeating the same mistakes that the United States made after 9 11 in range. You know him, so all the scope of their military campaign, was it about the potential to overreact to hezbollah . Was it both . How did you hear those comments . I think they were wise words from a wise president. I think hes just reminding the world and the israelis that the u. S. Did things it regretted after 9 11. We did a lot of things that were good. We did things to combat terrorism. We ultimately brought Osama Bin Laden to justice under present obama. But we also launched a war in iraq that was needless, that cost too many lives on both sides, and achieved nothing to promote american security. I think the president just saying in these times of great stress, you need to be careful that your choices and understand the consequences of what youre doing. The president has been very clear from the start that the israelis have a right and an obligation to defend themselves and to combat terrorism and combat this hamas evil brutality. But they also need to respect civilian lives and need to be careful to do it in a way that doesnt take needless civilian deaths, and the president has worked very hard to get humanitarian assistance into gaza, yesterday, thanks to the president s diplomacy with egypt and israel. I know our usaid administrator, ambassador sam power, has been on the phone all weekend trying to get other countries to help with this humanitarian crisis in gaza as well. The president has proposed 100 Million Dollars of immediate humanitarian aid. Hes continuing to press that. He understands the crisis in gaza. Hes talked also about Combatting Islamophobia and antisemitism here in our country. Its a difficult time but we have a wise, experienced president leading the way for us here in america. President biden is not new to divisions within the party. You are not new to divisions within the party either. I think none of us are. Hes not new to being attacked himself. Senator Chuck Schumer said called out members of his own party this weekend called for a ceasefire and are blaming israel for the hospital, strikes saying they are taking hamass position. Thats a pretty intense criticism. Some progressive members are also accusing President Biden of writing blank checks to israel, they are urging him to call for a ceasefire. How should he be navigating this . Is it even possible to bring everyone together in this moment . I think what the president is doing is the right thing, he is focused on one promotes the actual security of the United States, which tries to minimize the loss of innocent life and tries to have the u. S. Stand for freedom around the world. I think thats why the package he sent to congress to fund the defense of israel and help the ukrainians get the russians out of their country is the right thing to do. And while the president has been working so hard on humanitarian aid to gaza also. I think it is time for the voices to come down, and the work to get down done, to join and unequivocally condemning the brutality that brutal evil of hamas and the Terrorist Attack of october 7th. And then to go on with securing israel, helping the civilians in gaza who are innocent victims in all of this, and making sure we are defending our allies and ukraine as well. I want to turn to the chaos in the House Of Representatives. None of that is new to you either. You worked with politics along. Time youve helped people negotiate deals. If republicans ultimately needed democrats to finalize a speaker, and they may, what should democrats be asking for in return . I raise this because i think people think, oh, maybe they will Elect Jeffries as speaker. That seems farfetched. What else could they get through this negotiation . I think its important to have a speaker who was not dedicated to an insurrection, and a speaker who understands the constitution, even if it is a republican we disagree with on many policy issues. I think its also fair for democrats to expect that the president s Emergency Aid Package get a vote on the house floor. And that if there are measures both the majority of democrats and the majority of republican support, we should get votes on the house floor. And that democrats should be treated fairly in the house. The house should go about its business of keeping it together and open. As i said at the outset, we have Men And Women Serving In The Middle East and military bases in the region on ships in the region. And the uss carney, which heroically shut down to terrorist missiles this week. Headed towards israel. And ask those men and women to do their duty while congress refuses, the republican majority in the house refuses to do its duty of funding the government is outrageous. I think im not going to negotiate on behalf of the democratic the democrats, Leader Jeffries is more than capable of doing that. A great leader for our party on congress right now. Leader jeffries and his team will have to work out whatever is possible. Right now, the republicans have rebuffed any efforts by the democrats to find a bipartisan solution. They are left spinning in their own caucus division, a caucus that speaker boehner, a republican, not a democrat, called the chaos caucus. Thats what we are seeing play out at capitol hill. Before i let you, go i wanted to ask you about the threats against lawmakers. Many have come out around this speakers race. Those who didnt support jim jordan. Its easy to become numb to. This do you think this is something that Justice Department should be looking into, even investigating . Its my practice not to discuss specific criminal manners looking into. But what i will say is that, as you said, the normalization of Political Violence in this country has to be completely unacceptable. We can have our great divisions, we can have great debates, we can have divisions, we have elections. The idea that the outcome of any election, the election for the speaker, any other election should be decided by violence by threats is unamerican and no one should have to fear that their daughter is going to school because of the way they voted in the speakers race. And so the threats of violence, the threats on capitol hill need to stop right now. We need to have a rational conversation about who should be the next speaker, Hopefully Republicans Reach Out to democrats for bipartisan solution, the republicans need to start doing it on their own, they should do it in an orderly way that eschews violence and issues insurrection. The aid that reach gaza over the last 24 hours is also just a fraction of what will ultimately be needed on an ongoing basis to mitigate the deepening humanitarian crisis. This is all an example of how diplomacy can be slow. It can have many starts. Every single step of progress often requires many hours of negotiations. Joining me now. The first interview since the appointment of someone who has been at the center of the negotiation, Special Envoy for the middle east humanitarian issues David Satterfield. There are reports about another 17 trucks. What can we expect in terms of the timeline of when they make it through the crossing. Certainly, john. President biden made very clear we are focused on several key issues. Mine is getting a continuous flow of humanitarian assistance into gaza to meet the needs of its people. The second is to work to get our american nationals, their families, those who have worked with us in gaza safely out. Now we were successful in working with teams and cara, here in israel with the United Nations to move that a very first convoy yesterday. 20 trucks there is an additional 15 trucks on route today. Our expectation and substance of our discussion with all sides is that starting tomorrow you will be seeing a continuous flow of assistance moving. We want to build the flow up to the levels necessary to begin to meet the needs of gaza. Jen, ive got a key point to make. Here President Biden made quite directly. This is for the legitimate needs of the people in gaza. If hamas interferes with seizes our diverts the assistance, it will as a practical matter make it very difficult for this assistance to continue. It will be another demonstration of the lack of concern for the welfare of the Palestinian People. I want to ask you about hamass. There ought to be International Support and a common expression of concern. Real concern for the Palestinian People and against hamas taking such steps. Any decision by the Israeli Military that involves the north will, of course, have an impact which is why they have focused. We are focusing on addressing the very significant increase population of palestinians in the south of the gaza strip. There are two american hostages freed. Thats a big development. There are more being. Held there are hundreds of americans who are now being trying to get out through the Rafah Crossing. Are you encouraged should we be encouraged that is coming soon given that there has been aid flowing in . What is your expectation beyond the timeline there . Well, our expectation is that all foreign nationals including the almost 1000 americans, those with family, the staff who worked for, us for our mission in gaza will indeed be able to depart as rapidly as possible. Nothing is simple. The issue of movement through Rafah Out Of Gaza is complicated as was the movement of humanitarian assistance and. You are quite right. The opening of the crossing for assistance to head to the people of gaza was an essential and critical first up to what we want to achieve, what the president wants to achieve. Is it primarily hamas are the egyptians holding it up. . Who is preventing people from leaving . The answer is simple. It is hamas full stop. , certain hamas might move this with them. Why is that . There is no question that both are significant in terms of what the signal. Youve got a fraud in the election. It was perpetrated by donald trump and his allies. You have canisters burrow saying that in fact the whole architecture of this scheme of fake electors was a crime. All of that is significant. And you have Sydney Powell saying that she illegally helped break into the Coffee County voting machines. That is also significant. To your question about what this means Going Forward with respect to the lead defendant, donald trump, that is where i think there is a difference. And thats because we dont know what it is that both of them will say Going Forward. I tend to be relatively pessimistic that they are fully cooperating. We just dont know that yet that they are fully cooperating. Not if any of them is going to be forced to have to Say Something that could implicate rudy giuliani, john eastman and at least in directly donald trump, its mr. Chesbrough. Because he pled to the fake elector scheme and that is so core to what happened on january 6th and the lead up to january. Six thats why i think his guilty plea is sort of more central and potentially more important with respect to proving Donald Trumps criminal liability. Neil, trumps legal team is obviously downplaying this. These two had a lot of access. Andrew referenced. It you are familiar with their stories, where they were at different times. If you are the prosecutor what is most valuable to them. What do they want most from these two please . Yes, first of all i think its hard to distinguish between who is more important. Its asking about whether the height or width of a square is more relevant both are enormously significance and both are trump attorneys theyre not attorneys like andrew me these are like maga trump attorneys who are saying yes i did it and im willing to enter into a deal over this and both of them will have testimony that is relevant to trump. Sydney powell directly because she was in the room including on December 18th when trump tried to make her Special Counsel of all things over the january six election and to me im probably a little bit more optimistic than andrew about this testimony. The thing thats most important to me both of these plea deals require how powell and chesbrough agreed to be interviewed before the deal actually was done. Sydney powell on videotape. Im not sure if chesebro is on videotape or not that means the testimony has been given. Fani willis agreed to a no jail term for both of these people after seeing that testimony. All of that says this is a significant testimony it implicates trunk directly in terms of Sydney Powell and with chesbrough showing that donald trump doesnt have a serious advice of counsel. Chesbrough are cork and Special Counsel jack smiths federal prosecution over the efforts to overturn the election. How will this relate to that and how these guilty pleas effect that case . That is such an excellent question because one of the unusual things here is you have people who accept responsibility with respect to crimes in state court in georgia. There is no agreement with respect to the federal case where they are reported to be Unindicted Coconspirators and they are listed in the indictment as Unindicted Coconspirators. That is one of the reasons why im a little more pessimistic than. Neil its unlikely they would be admitting to crimes that they would be Sitting Ducks for at the federal level and jack smith is out there and you can charge them and they clearly havent reached an agreement so everything that has borough and palaces and state court Going Forward can be used against them and Federal Court where they still face liability in connection with their role in the january six ks so that interplay is one that we dont have any insight into and its very unusual that you dont have these people taking a global play. Absolving their state and federal liability. One reason for that could be that the federal government wasnt ruling to say that were willing to give you no jail time given the significant crimes that they have now admitted to. We have to Pay Attention to that. It is a reminder of the importance of American Leadership on the global stage. Its the reason why i am so concerned about the chaos and the politics of brinkmanship that were seeing in washington we are seeing it realtime. When politicians center themselves rather than the National Interest and the people they were sent to serve, it has implications not only for our economy, it has National Security implications. The world Needs Americans to stand up and be in america at this moment. Not to politicize what is a tragedy. You touched on this a little bit. It feels like you touched on this. You have strongly condemned the Terrorist Attack and the impact on the people of israel. There are also thousands of palestinians who are not willing to hamas who could lose their lives who are at risk of losing their lives. There is a risk here of Palestinians Around The World having hatred beard at them. How should we talk and think about that at this moment. Yes we have to be very focused on it i think that justice and Human Dignity provides the necessary framework for peace. What i dont want to see is some 15 year old boy in gaza deciding that how loss is the way. I think if we want a sustainable peace we have to think about children on both sides of this conflict. Here is one thing that all of us have in common. None of us got to decide where we would be born in the world. We just showed up. As a pastor i am just ohs origin us to see each others children. Thats another thing we have in common. We all love our children. The policy that we would put forward is a letter to our children. We ought to be thinking when were talking about National Security or talking about the sustainability of democracy in our own country. We have to ask ourselves, what we want the letter to say. I do want to ask you about a couple of things that feel conflicting to me about the democratic system its an important issue. There are another number of republican elected leaders in your state who spoke out and push back and the days after the 2020 election to the actions of donald trump. What did you make of that as you read the indictment. Did it surprise you that the leader spoke out. Does it Say Something about the state . I think that we are witnessing an all out assault on our democracy. And all of us ought to be clear in our our rage and our rejection of these antidemocratic efforts that were seeing all across the country the lies that were told by the previous president have consequences. Weve seen them right here in georgia with ordinary every day Election Workers whove been intimidated and harassed and had their lives turned upside down. Are you worried, theres so many more like them and their stories are so inspiring and disheartening at the same time are you worried that Election Workers are going to be too scared to work in the next election. We are seeing data and hearing reports of Election Workers who are saying i dont think i can continue to do this. Thats a sad commentary. Its a sad moment its the reason why i remain focused on this issue. We have issues that confront us as elected leaders. For me democracy is not just another issue alongside other issues its the very framework in which we get to fight we have to make sure that we strengthen the democracy. We have to reject those voices that are trying to terrace apart the arsonist that want to burn down the house of democracy. There is a big case thats coming up in Fulton County its ongoing and im not going to ask you to predict anything there the outcome of that as a uniter which you are. The outcome could be the election of donald trump and it could be jail time for donald trump. Do you think he should serve jail time if hes convicted . I believe in equal protection under the law. I believe that nobody is above the law nobody. And donald trump deserves his day in court before a jury of his peers and in this case these will be the People Of Georgia who i am deeply honored to serve. I asked this question because there are different schools of thought that if you put a former president in jail, despite all the things that he did, that would be a divisive move for the country there are other things that could happen he could be in maralago, he could be under house confinement, do you think theres an approach that would be better for the country moving forward given that there is also a lot of people who would like to see him in jail. Let me just say that i do believe in equal protection under the law donald trump even in the midst of all the things weve heard with him on tape saying can you find me a few more votes, hes innocent until proven guilty. I dont want to get ahead of the process and i reject respect the judicial process. I do think that it is a test of the maturity of the democracy to see whether or not we leave up to the principles that we hold up.
