Hello everyone, i am alicia menendez, the, israelhamas war enters its third week, muchneeded humanitarian aid is moved into the gaza strip. Today, 20 trucks entered gaza at the rafah Border Crossing with egypt. Now, if this comes at a crucial time, gaza has been running out of food, and out of clean water. Unicef warrens causes water Production Capacity is not just 5 of normal levels, airstrikes have dismantled most of their infrastructure. Including sanitation systems, for the more than too many people who live there. The United Nations and other groups say that todays delivery of aid, it is not nearly enough. Cindy mccain, the world food programmes executive director, shes demanding a Continuous Delivery of food and other supplies for all of the civilians in the gaza strip. This cannot be the last convoy. We need to have sustained, safe access to be able to get our trucks across the border, so that we can feed the millions of people that are depending on emergency food. Today, an nbc news producer on the ground in gaza shot this video, in aftermath of an airstrike. I spoke to a woman whose home was destroyed. Just as the blast killed her entire family. More than 4000 people have died in gaza since the outbreak of the war, it is according to the Palestinian Health ministry. In the meantime, a spokes man for the military says that it will continue its bombardment of gaza as it seeks to dismantle the hamas terror group, two weeks ago, hundreds of hamas gunman attacked southern industrial, leaving more than 1000 civilians dead and taking more than 200 hostages. Nbc news learned that president Bidens National Security Team grief him today ahead of unexpected Ground Invasion of gaza. With us now from the israel, gaza border, nbc news correspondent, alison barber. What can you tell us about the effort to get more aid into gaza, and what is it that you are hearing from people inside of gaza . Yeah, i mean, the u. N. , the u. S. , other aid groups like the red cross, they are all hoping that this is going to be a common occurrence, the aid that went in today just 20 truckloads, it was something. But by everyones measure, not nearly enough to deal with the humanitarian crisis inside of gaza. Prior to this war, about a third of palestinians were considered to be food insecure. That is only getting worse since all of this started. Theres a lot of aid in egypt at the border at the u. N. , and other groups said that they have Storage Units near the rafah crossing that is full of a just waiting to get inside. Israel has said that they will continue to support and allow humanitarian aid, food, medicine, and water. Not fuel, into gaza as long as that aid goes to civilians, and not hamas militants. If they find out that it has gone to hamas militants or batted has been intercepted, they suggested that then their position might change a bit. But there is a desperate need for more aid. And we spoke to one palestinian who lives in gaza city. He had evacuated south with his family. He told us, yes, absolutely, we need humanitarian aid. But at the same time, he was frustrated, and in some ways he said he didnt really want it because he felt like by focusing so hard, and talking so much about getting aid in, that the International Community was neglecting what he considers some of the most important conversations right now about the root cause of all of this. Listen. As a palestinian living in gaza, i honestly do not care about aid. We want this to stop. President biden should focus his efforts on that, in particular. Not aid into this place. That is not what we are looking for. We want this to end. We want the root cause of this whole mess to be addressed. It has been 75 years in the making. The imprisoned, tortured, homes demolished, freedoms taken, dehumanized, in any way, thinking about every single day of the past 75 years, israel has been doing that and much, much, much more than i can even think of at this moment. He sent us videos from inside of gaza of lines of people just wrapped around the block waiting to try and get some bread. He sent us a video from People Living in the shelter area where he and his family are now going to this very dirty pool, scooping out buckets of water, because it was the only way that they could flush their toilets. His position on aid was yes we needed, yes we need food, but what good is read from my children if they die in an airstrike. And that is what they said really, they want to see. And it is this constant bombardment of gaza, but israel has been very clear that they feel like in order to ensure what happened on october 7th never happens again that they must make sure that hamas no longer has any capability to operate inside of gaza. And what theyve made very clear is that that means an escalation of this war and soon a Ground Assault in to gaza. Alicia . On that last point, what is it that you are learning about israels anticipated Ground Invasion . Right now we can hear in the distance and it is far off so you probably will not be able to hear it but we can hear these subtle booms. We have seen flashes in the direction of gaza tonight of things being struck inside of gaza. We have heard here and there are artillery fired in the direction of gaza. The language from Israeli Military leadership as it relates to this Ground Assault has increased and gotten stronger in recent days. The Defense Minister is telling Combat Troops who are on the border with gaza, youve seen gaza from the outside, soon you will see it from the inside. They have everything in place to launch a Ground Offensive when they get that final green light. But exactly when . They have not said. The keep using the language they have for a while that is imminent. But if theyve seen it, more eminent could be minutes, hours, days, we were speaking to a member in this area a few hours ago. She said that they have been told on three different occasions, three different nights that the Ground Offensive was going to start and but it didnt happen. So they were not entirely sure when it would happen, but they are certainly in a position to be ready for it and the language that we are hearing, particularly in the last 48 hours is getting stronger and suggesting that a Ground Offensive will begin soon. Alicia . Nbcs Alison Barbara as always, thank you. President biden is vowing to do everything in its power to free the hostages in gaza on friday. President biden spoke to the two american hostages released by hamas. And it mother and daughter from chicago among the roughly 200 people taken hostage two weeks ago. Here is nbc news correspondent Jesse Kershaw with reaction from their community in illinois. Word of judith and natalie raanans really, natalie raanans former High School Principal putting out a statement saying that that community is thrilled and her father spoke late yesterday, describing what had been sleepless days, saying that this remarkable news that is coming just days before natalies 18th birthday. Ive been waiting for this moment for a long time, two weeks, ive not been sleeping for two weeks, tonight i will sleep good. I spoke with my daughter earlier today. She sounds very gun. She looks very good. She is very happy. And shes waiting to come home. Im going to hug her and kiss her and it is going to be the best day of my life. Natalie raanans father, who is judith raanans ex husband also says that judith apparently has what sounds like a minor scratch on her hand. But again, the pair appeared to be in relatively good physical condition. We are wait to see when they will return to the United States. Back to you. Nbcs jesse kirk, thank you, jessie. We will bring in david rohde, nbc news Senior Executive editor for national security. He was held hostage in afghanistan by the taliban for more than seven years. He spoke with judith and natalie yesterday, and i want to take a listen to a bit of that conversation. Hi judas. Hello president i am so glad that you are home. Not home, but im glad you are out. Thank you so very much. And how are you . God love you. I just want to say thank you for your services for israel. Look, that is long serving. I am just glad we are able to get you out. We have been working on it for a long time. We will get them all out, god willing. Think about that sound from the dad, what he says, this is the best day of my life. The best day of his life, of course, what i can only imagine, following some of the worst days of his life. Explain, david, what those two hostages and their families are going through . Pure joy, it is very simple, some people say it must be strange, or a shock to emerge from that situation, and you just couldnt be happier. In many ways, it is harder on the family than on the hostages. They at least know where they, are how they are being treated, whereas the families just kill themselves thinking about how they could get President Biden to do more. How could they say the right thing and achieve what might free their loved ones. So it is just unbelievable joy for these two. But theres 200 captives that remain in captivity. I want to talk about the 200 people who are being held hostage by hamas. Your sense of what hamas was willing to release these two hostages, specifically, any sense of their plan for remaining hostages . Our colleague and nbc wrote a big piece on this today. It seems like qatar is trying to talk to hamas and tell them that the only route to avoid all out war, a full on israeli Ground Invasion, is to release these hostages. And it was surprising that they did release these two. It was a positive sign but i think that they realized that holding 200 hostages is not the strongest position to have. The question is, there is tremendous anger, understandably, and israel. You know, 1400 people died in this attack, at least 1000 of them were civilians that were killed and terrorist attacks. So, the israeli public may demand the Ground Invasion. But, this does show that it seems like the political leaders of hamas, many of them are based outside of gaza, have enough influence to get some hostages released. So the hope of negotiators is more releases, more time, and more aid into gaza and to avoid all out war. David we talk about frustration and anger among people in israel. Some Family Members of these israeli hostages have expressed frustration with their own government for the handling of the situation saying that they are being kept in the dark and that they have had to instead rely on, quote, digital clues about the situation, what do you attribute that to . It is normal what happens in these situations, and that families get incredibly frustrated. My family got frustrated with the u. S. Government, i guess that i would urge these families to try to show patients, it is easy, again, for me to say. I dont have a loved one who has been kidnapped now, but every former hostage that ive talked to, they dont, if you are lucky enough to come home, they do not complain about their government not doing enough. The blame one party for these kidnappings, and that is the kidnapper. Hamas is at fault here. Yes, there is maybe a better job the Israeli Government could do communicating with these families. Maybe theres more of the american government. But the problem is the kidnapper. This is inexcusable, there is no reason to take 200 civilians hostage. It is just a cruel, and cowardly crime, i am biased to my own experience, but the pressure and focus and anger should be on hamas. That question was specifically about the families inside of israel and i want to make sure that i also ask you about the families of the 11 americans who are still missing. They met with President Biden last week, as you remember, your sense of what is going on Behind The Scenes in the Biden Administration itself, so all 11 can be brought home safely . I think that there is tremendous efforts to work with qatar on this diplomacy. And i should say more specifically that i am sure that the Israeli Government and maybe they are sharing information there is constant surveillance going on. They are trying to track every piece of information they can. Get sulfone signals, any mention of hostages by any member of hamas and find them. They probably divided into small groups, they are probably being held underground, im sure that this mother and daughter was immediately interviewed about how they were held, who they were held with, and i am also show that hamas has moved all of the hostages that were possibly held with them to a different location. So there is a desperate effort to get information. I think both countries would try to carry out a raid if they had clear information on where the hostages are. But it would be very difficult. Just lastly, hamas held an israeli soldier for five years, about one decade ago. And israel so that is how difficult it is to find a hostage there. Important context. New reports suggesting the attack may have been an attempt to block the impending deal between israel and saudi arabia. Your assessment of that . I think that it was. I think there was a sense that a broader Peace Agreement was moving forward and homolysis moving forward. And they have in many ways, and i think that you heard earlier in the interview with the palestinian in gaza, the sense that 75 years has gone by, and it may be too late for a two state solution, im not an expert on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, but you do see that in some states, possibly after hamas has been neutralized, you know, possibly there is a need for more diplomacy about some sort of long Term Solution here, in some form. It is maybe with two states, i dont know. But beyond that, right now, this is a tremendous crisis, it is very dangerous, it could spread and intensify if hezbollah attacks from the north and this could turn to a regional war, so it is a very difficult situation. But again, two hostages were released without conditions, that surprised me, so maybe there is a chance for some diplomacy here. David rohde, our nbc news Senior Executive editor for national security, david, as always, thank you. Still to come this hour, at the time of crisis abroad, a Spectacular Display of dysfunction in the republicanled house. Unfortunately, jim is no longer going to be the nominee. We have to go back to the Drawing Board. What history will look at is the crazy eights led by gaetz and the amount of damage they have done to this country and party, its insurmountable. Ive never seen this amount of damage done for their own personalities, for their own fear its astonishing to me and we were in a very bad position as a party. For more than two weeks, the republicanled House Of Representatives has been with a speaker. More candidates are jumping and the wide open field. Today, minnesota congressman tom emmer through his head in the rink. He is one of the few republicans on the list of potential speakers, you can see it on your screen, there he look at against overturning the 2020 president ial election. Republicans have until noon tomorrow to declare their candidacies for speakership. The gop conference will be monday. But at the next floor vote on a speaker at tuesday at the earliest. So, while israel and ukraine look to congress for support, inching closer towards another potential government shutdown, republicans are taking the we can. Of as molly jongfast puts it in committee, fear that gop burning down the house. Molly is with us now. Shes a Special Correspondent for vanity fair and she hosts that fast politics podcast. Molly, pull that threat for me. When you say theyre burning in the house, what exactly do you mean . Its interesting that Kevin Mccarthy is saying that this all started with matt gaetz. Yes this is when we started getting into trouble with matt gaetz. I think this started when they elected donald trump. This is not about gaetz. Look, gates definitely did, in the end, have this motion to vacate and did Remove Mccarthy as speaker. He started this group. But this is a schism that started, if you really want to get technical, it may have started with newt gingrich. But donald trump was certainly part of it. And i think that now you have this party that is really in free fall. They dont know what they are. They dont know who they believe in, they dont know what they believe in. And i think that really there is a significant part of this party thats completely nihilistic, that just want to burn it all down. There are the burn it all down caucus. That matt gaetz is. That. Crew and veterans contrary to everything the federal government is supposed to be doing. It also struck me, listen to that sound, there is never cognition of his complicity and i think we keep waiting for the moment to come. Its not get there. I wonder, as you look at thought republicans puin their names in for speaker, we have the big graphic with all the minnesotas, tom emmer, one of the very few who did not vote to overturn the 2020 elecon, who did not rry Donald Trumps water on that. When you look at these two elements, jim jordans failure, for i. C. E. , and amaras candidacy, i wonder if between the two, on that continuum, there isa framework for a future Republican Party that can actually move beyond thats the 10 Million Dollar question. Thats what were all wondering. Does jim jordans inability to become speaker mean that donald trump is diminished in that Republican Party . Does this main, is this a signal that the fever has broken . Right . Because there is no one donald trump once more as a head of the house, speaker of the house, then jim jordan. He is a donald trump sycophant, through and through. He was involved in stop the steal. He is Donald Trumps guy. So the fact that he could be made Speaker Mains that either donald trump doesnt have the same kind of power he did in congress, which is possible, or donald trump is so distracted by his legal problems that he couldnt focus on that. And either where, you have to wonder, if youre a republican donor and donald trump is now the nominee, because you know the rest of the base, nobody else has come close to him. Eight percentage points, five percentage points, but not anywhere near him. You have to worry, how is this guy going to run for president . There is also, i think its important to underline this through line, if you can call, it of authoritarianism youve seen throughout this process. The fact republicans who go against jim jordan, the ones who directed against him pop the, not the ones who dared to go against him when it was a Secret Ballot and didnt have to sign for a name to it. Being met with Death Threats. Which is an everyday reality, of course, for some democrats and congress. That part of the story, whether its happening within their caucus or within their party writ large, it says something about the moment we find ourselves in. Yeah, i mean, again, the Death Threats are nothing new, right . This is trumps and oh from 2016 on. If you are going to go against our guy, youre gonna get Death Threats. So i wouldnt say that this is a completely new phenomenon. But i would say that the people, there are not working. Congressman bacon was like, so what . He really didnt care. And his wife got all these Death Threats and they just kept going. And it didnt change his vote. So that is a really important data point. So its not working the way it has, previously. Now, this weekend, you are seeing Trump Acolytes try to intimidate some tom amorous because they dont want him, because he voted against certification. What i think is worth wondering is, are they going to just keep alienating people until, i mean, how many days does this go on before it really hurt republicans keep in the house. How long do they let this go before they realize that theyve just, there are just putting themselves in terrible trouble . Your cat is trying to tell me that is time for this interview to. And but i have one more question. Its easy when you and i both understand this. Our audience understands this. Its easy for all of this does not like the political games or machination theyre a big stakes here, especially when you talk about the eight pages currently before congress. We talk about the funding deadline. But there is the question, at some, 0. 2 people in that Republican Congress get so tired of the shenanigans that they themselves are tossing perhaps to be a compromise candidate they get behind one of them . Theres also the question of the American People looking at this and saying this is not governance. And if there are real consequences. Yes. No. I mean, i dont understand why the American People, i think this actually really hurts them. The majority, these republicans. Because they have this very slim majority already. And the idea now that theyre going to, after a 20 days without a speaker, probably and certainly beat marvin 20 days, theyre going to make this case that theyre functional when they control the house, seems kind of notes. I would also say, mchenry, the protons, baker is an option. He said he didnt want. It but there would be, you, know i think democrats are sort of waiting around. There is only republicans have a four state majority. And i think democrats are waiting around, and youre saying, if you want to get back to work, we are here. Molly jongfast, as always, thank you so much for your time. Next, the former president s legal troubles may have taken a turn for the worst. Donald trumps codefendants are starting to flipping georgia. Former trump attorneys Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro, pleading guilty this week and a current to take the stand against the former president. Jury selection for chesebros trial was already underway when he made that deal with prosecutors. Both chesebro and powell will avoid prison time if they testify truthfully about trumps plot to overturn the 2020 election. Joining me now, Barbara Mcquade professor at the university of Michigan School of law and cohost of the hashtag sisters in law podcast. This isnt the first Plea Deal Chesbrough was offered. Nbc reports he rejected a different set of trends last week. I wonder what that signals to you about what prosecutors thought they had that they were willing to try twice . Sometimes, alicia, it isnt so much the terms change but the timing does. And so as that clock ticks down and as the jury is showing up to the building to start filling out those jury questionnaires, sometimes the defendant decides, okay, this is the end of the, line i need to make a decision now. So its hard to know if there was a different deal, or suddenly the deal look better to commit chesebro as the potential jurors were walking in the door. Trump has publicly claimed his election indifference was the result of bad legal advice. How could have been his attorneys testify, then, undermined the defense . I think this is going to be a very helpful thing to have Kenneth Chesebro on the government side here. And dont forget, alicia, one really key finding that happened earlier in the week, that may have also prompted Kenneth Chesebro to plead guilty, was the judge in that case ruled that the attorneyclient privilege would be pierced. But what is not as the crime fraud exception. That is, there was a preponderance of the evidence, that were engaged in fraud when they were communicating. So all that stuff was going to come in. And then you get the narrator, which i think could be very valuable. Whenever you have a cooperator with a lot of baggage, like Kenneth Chesebro, that the jury might discount the testimony to some extent, testifying, to let the prosecutor what they want to hurt to save his own skin, prosecutors typically rely mostly on documents, other witnesses, records, other kinds of things. But it is so helpful to have someone On The Inside, like Kenneth Chesebro, to be that narrator and try to put those dots together. And i think thats where it can be incredibly useful, especially in light of the defense that donald trump intends to land. Kenneth chesebro can be the one to say, thats just not true. Help me understand the timeline. Chase broke and pell were supposed to be the first drunken defendants to stand trial. Any sense what we know about the timing for the first base of defendants, do we expect him to try . Together we really dont. But they should accelerate things because this trial was expected to last several weeks. Now everybodys top it is clear. The judge doesnt have to sit through the trial. The prosecution doesnt have to sit for the trial. And so we could see the trial date get set now at some point. There will still be some time for the filing of motions, and the resolution of this motions. So i imagine that will continue for sometime. But i think with these two, not having the trial, that could move up any potential brought. It and as for whether theyll open the altogether that certain is the preference of fani willis. But i imagine, we will see more peels before we return. So the number of defendants who actually go to trial might end up being only a small handful. Barb, your fellow nbc legal analyst predicts theyll become witnesses in trumps federal case as well. But they have not been charged and the special counsels investigation. Talk me through your thoughts of roll on that hypothesis, and what it would be that corporate before actually being indicted. I think its a very good hypothesis. If you were the attorney for chesebro or powell, it doesnt make sense to plead guilty in one form and leave them exposed to criminal charges and another. Because what theyre going to do in this case in georgias go in and testify. And they have to say, all the things they did themselves that makes him believe theyre guilty, and they were part of, it and they were On The Inside. That public testimony could be used against them in the federal. Case i would imagine that theories will be given to jack smith, if they have not done so already, two and explore a pre indictment plea. And if you can get a plea before indictment, you can terms that corridor. Just like the terms think out in georgia, pretty good if you ask me. Getting our way with probation. The reason the cup is deals as because they were the. First they got in the door and their testimony is very, very valuable. By the time you start getting up to defendant 17, defendant 18, its not as much to have that cumulative testimony. So my guess is, they will ultimately cut deals with jack smith as well. Are, up as were sitting here, thinking of which of this cornucopia of legal troubles will ask you about, we knew we had to ask you that michigan. Speaking of trump allies taking the stand, michigans a. G. Has dropped charges against a Fit Fake Elector Interchange for his testimony. What does that tell you about the michigan case . Again, were seeing a guilty plea, seeing somebody going to cooperate on to the inside. The michigan case, in many ways, is actually very simple. The charges are brought against the fake electors for a testing that they were indeed thoroughly elected electors for the state of michigan, and they cast a for donald trump. That was a lie. Having someone On The Inside, i think, can help understand the logistics going on. Theyre the one relevant question at trial, whether they intended to defraud anyone or whether they were simply casting some sort of provisional pellet and case things change so they didnt miss a deadline. I think having a cooperator On The Inside can be very valuable to explaining that distinction. Barbara mcquade, tank you as always for your time and expertise. Next, violence here at home. C. , pillar of the day calling for a ceasefire in gaza. Over 4000 people died and escalating violence between israel and hamas. In the past two weeks, since the hamas Terror Attack in southern israel if more than 1000 civilians, that there have been dozens of organized protests across the United States interpret of both israelis and palestinians. Security officials are warning the eslang conflict abroad, language, could lead to an uptick in hate crimes here and abroad. The State Department issued a world worldwide advisory for u. S. Travelers. And london, antisemitic hate crimes are already up more than 1000 . Officials there say islamophobic hate crimes are up to hundred 40 . Here in the United States, a sixyearold Palestinian American Bullet was stabbed to death last week. His mother was also stabbed, but she survived. President biden has publicly condemned this as a hate crime. And he called the family personally to offer his condolences. The boys uncle says that is not enough and want the president to take a more proactive approach to stopping hate crimes against muslim americans. Frank figliuzzi joined me now. He is the author of the fbi way, inside the bureaus code of excellence. Frank, no doubt tensions extremely high, explain the challenge and the work that the fbi is doing as they seek to both prevent and to investigate hate crimes. There is a real challenge here, and all explained why in a second. Youll recall after 9 11, dhs came up with this color coded threat level and it was discouraged because it became confusing and even for Law Enforcement and it didnt result in tangible differences and security postures. But i can tell you this. If it were in place today, it would likely be raised, the threat level, the color would go up probably from blue, wed go to yellow, or even. Orange and here is why. Here is where the challenge comes. And we could take some assurance and comfort from the fact Law Enforcement is telling us, hey, there is no credible threat identified against the homeland here. Okay. Thats good. Important to note. But i have to also note that thats not really what the threats about right now. Its not about intelligence telling us, for example, that hamas is poised to attack the United States. They never were. They werent about a presence in the United States dead cuckoo operational at anytime. Thats not the issue. What concerns the fbi and local instant authorities that most right now is the lone actor. Maybe mentally unstable, may be fueled by hatred. Wanted to instill fear, acting out irrationally, and we certainly saw that with a tragic stab and get of the sixyearold you just referenced. Its why the fbi jumped in immediately in that case. Doj even issued a press release. Its why were going to see the federal government come down horrid with hate crime and fbi investigations. Just in the last, week we saw the fbi director get on a phone call with 5000 jewish leaders as part of a security circular communities network, we also saw him travel to the International Association of chiefs of Police Conference on the west coast, and he told police executives, with an increased threat. Whether its bomb threats or physically acting out a places of worship both muslim and jewish. We are in an increased threat posture. When he is on the phone with Law Enforcement, when hes on the phone with community leaders, what is it that hes conveying to them about the threat and about the agency that they do or dont have . Good point. So were obviously seeing the increased physical presence around hebrew schools, around mosques and madrasas, synagogues, that the obvious. Behind the scenes, intelligence units, Police Departments within the fbi, are working hard to identify that threat out there. Whos aspirational, whos really go and execute their threat, and boy does this involve social media platforms. And weve got to all get better actors, but you know the brouhaha that spilled over into the public view over whether the fbi should even have contact with platforms like twitter. Then their war courts say you shouldnt do it at all. So there is no domestic terrorism act. We have Freedom Of Speech and freedom of assembly. All of that creates a speed bump to get into things before they happen. Big structural issues. Ive only got about 30 seconds left, but i do want you to Connect The Dots for us, frank, between the Demonizing Rhetoric and the violence that we see. There is no question that social media is fueling and inciting and even foreign adversaries are on social media right now, with bots and trolls, trying to put us against each other. My message to everyone is, dont vote for it, even take a break from your social media because its all that right now for the most part. Check your facts and sources, get it right, cool of hatred but you see it. Block bots and trolls and others that you dont think are genuine on the air and stay safe if youre going to attend rallies and protests. Understand, those are soft targets. Go with friends, stay in touch with people, talk about security with your local police and place of worship. Frank figliuzzi, as always, thanks for. And next, the voices of.
