MHA urges Marylanders to get COVID-19 vaccine as hospitalizations trend down

There are now fewer than 800 in the hospital statewide. Hospitals are starting to make some changes, but they know this isn’t over yet."This (National Hospital Week) is a really special one because our hospitals were called upon 14 months ago to essentially save an awful lot of lives in crucial circumstances," said Bob Atlas, president and CEO of Maryland Hospital Association.The Maryland Hospital Association said workers across the state stepped up and endured several surges of COVID-19 patients. The peak of patients came in January with nearly 2,000 hospitalized across the state.Hospitalizations are now going down, but Atlas said we're not out of the woods. "Obviously, we're going to have some concerns around the Memorial Day holiday, even July 4th if we can't get more than about half the adult population fully vaccinated ahead of those events," Atlas said.Hospital workers have vaccinated 1.5 million people across the state. They're hopeful that will help hospitalizations continue to drop off. And some are starting to scale down their coronavirus units, but not getting rid of them entirely yet."I think hospitals are going to try to resume mostly full normal operations but everybody's keeping some reserve capacity certainly supplies, PPE -- all that," Atlas said.The hospital association is urging every eligible Marylander to get vaccinated to help these workers who have literally put their lives on the line to save so many others.Atlas said there are no plans yet to close the Baltimore Convention Center or any of the other auxiliary hospitals around the state.
