Man sentenced in crash that left him, friends with 'catastrophic' injuries

It’s been 217 days since the driver, Ivan Russell, pleaded guilty to three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. This week, the former Oil Springs resident learned his sentence for driving his 2001 GMC Yukon 165 kilometres/hour before crashing into a utility pole and ejecting his three friends in March 2019.

The Crown previously asked for a one-year jail sentence – Russell was facing a maximum of two years less a day – while defence lawyer Robert DiPietro pushed for a conditional sentence including house arrest.
