Updated Dec 11, 2020;
An Essex County man was charged Thursday with robbing a hotel earlier in the week while telling the clerk he needed the cash because of the coronavirus outbreak, authorities said.
Devon Clemente, 33, of Glen Ridge, drove to the Comfort Inn on Route 46 East in Fairfield, entered about 6 p.m. wearing a surgical mask and showed the clerk a silver handgun in his waistband, police said.
“He told the clerk that he needed their money because of COVID,” Fairfield Police Chief Anthony Manna said in a statement.
