Make-A-Wish helps Canton teen with dream to own macaw she can train

CANTON -- When she stepped out of the SUV that had transported her more than three hours from home in Canton, 18-year-old Maranda Dumas knew something special was about to happen.
She just didn’t know all the details yet.
Once inside Exotic Pet Birds, Inc. in Webster, she quickly realized she was there because her wish was coming true: She was about to meet her new feathered friend, Oakley.
In recovery from Hodgkin lymphoma, the quiet teen had conveyed to Make-A-Wish Central New York what she wanted more than anything: a blue and gold macaw she could train from a young age.
