Aids continues to spread some 40 years after the epidemic was declared. The latest figures showed that in 2019, 38 Million People were living with hiv. Nearly 700,000 have died from the virus. Hiv is a manageable condition much like diabetes. The number of new infections has decreased along with the number of people who died from aids. That trend is expected to reverse this year because of the covid19 pandemic and lockdowns causing a shortage of hiv medication. In south africa, one in five people has hiv, a new drug is raising hopes for more effective prevention. As our correspondent reports tonight from cape town. For almost two decades, this has been this has been an important point for hiv. 30 years ago, lewis morris worked in a Textile Factory but then took a difficult turn, an accident left her unable to work , global problems followed and then she became infected with hiv. My family did not want to have anything to do with me after my hiv diagnosis. They cut off contact and even now, if my neighbors knew, they would only say hi from a distance. They would not invite me to their homes. That means i als keep my distance. It is not easy being hiv positive you have to accept that people behave in a certain way to argue, i find it sad. The doctor is used to hearing similar stories. At least half the community has a Family Member or somebody they know that is hiv positive. It is so common here but people dont speak about it. They might speak to us about it, they might speak to their Service Providers about it b they are not open about this, theyre worried about discrimination. Although stigma is a big problem in many communities, south africa has made a lot of progress. Course the preventative prep has been available for several years. Around 90,000 south africans protect them against hiv afctions by taking daily tablets. Now it only needs to be injected every eight weeks and they founded to be even more efficient. People also experience a lot of social pressures so women are judged as living with hivf they are taking pills that look like antiretrovirals. They may he judgments about their Sexual Activity and partners may feel that they want to be unfaithful. There are many barriers to taking a pill a day. Independent researchers also see the injection as an important development. Young women are the hardest hit group in south aica. We would like to find some time of technology that could last sixo 12 months. Hope and cape town think that the injection could be a great help but it may not be available for a number of years. In the meantime, more ardent issues remain. Due to the covid pandemic, the number of new infections and newborns is on the rise. A worrying trend after all the hard work to stop the spread of the virus. Courts joining us tonight from geneva is tim martin know, he is the executive director here. It is good to have you on the program. On this world aids day, how concerned are you that the coronavirus pandemic is eroding all of the progress made in the fight against hivaids . Thank you for having me on the program. Tim it is important that we recognize the urgency of responding to the covid19 pandemic. I think it is a responsibility for all organizations to step up and do what they can. We believe the aids response has a lot to contribute to the covid19 response in apying some of the lessons we have learned from our work ove the last 20, 30, 40 years. We are very concerned that we are missing theargets we already had. To be honest, the targets we set prior to the covid19 epidemic were not being met. We are short by 4 Million People starting on treatment as you spoke about the young adolescent girls and young women, 5. 5 thousand new infections in adolescent girls and young women every week. Key populations are consistently left behind and ignored. Those things have gotten worse with covid 19 undoubtedly. We are seeing prevention commodities, even basic ones such acondoms have beehard to get. At the heart of this, there is a clear wakeup call. Brent we are just weeks away from the first vaccinations against covid19. Do you know why there is no sign of a vaccine or a cure for hiv some 40 years after it was first diagnosed . It is marvelous news for covid19. I also regnize the ongoing investment in hiv. Developing a vaccine for aids is signicantly more imptant than for covid. It is because of the virus we are deing with and the longevity of the disease. It does demonstrate what can be done. I think that is a really Important Message for us all to take away. It does demonstrate what can be done for the future. Brent if there will head reacted to hiv as it has reacted to the coronavirus, wouldnt we have a vaccine or even a cure today . Tim i thick we need to recognize the signicant global vestment. We are talking about global solidarity, the International Community has worked ver hard together. What happened at the early stages of the edemic ther is an acceptance of the epidemic and an acceptance of the disease. Covid19 teaches us we mustnt except these things. We have to cry out against them and call for action. We need to keep working on science and research to find cures for these diseases. Brent what about the stigma that remains with hivaids . Has enough education been done to get rid of that stigma . Tim we have seen a lot of countries, really fantastic progress from cambodia, thailand, botswana, zimbabwe, you have seen significant progress in scaling up programs. The problem is dealing with policy constraints also, some of the stigma. Some of that can be done thrgh education. Getting young people the knowledge and the skills and enabling them to control their lives and make decisions about their futures. These are things that are incredibly important. As well as stigma Friendly Services where people can feel more comfortable about who they are going to. Brent tim, we appreciate your time and insight. Thank you. Brent you are washing dw news. Still to come, utahs mystery monolith prompts some theories about who put it there and who took it away. That story and more, coming up. First, moon rocks may be coming back to earth for the first time in more than four decades. This te, aboara chinese aircraft. They have toucd it touched down on the moons surface. O far, only russia and the u. S have successlly fucarried out lunar missions. Rhis marks a giant leap fo inacs spacachprogram if the journey is successful. I am joined tonight by keith. The website, na watch. Founder of it is good to see you again. What other chinese hoping to achieve with these moon rocks two things. There is the scientific goal. That is to land in an area whe we have not landed before. Just getting rocks and bring the back to earth, we will pay be able to better understand history of the moon, when it had volcanoes, but its interior is like. This is a very compact mission. It is probably t most complex thing thathina has done in space. It is the sort of thing that if youre getting ready to think about putting humans and spacecrafts, this is something you want to get ready to do, departing from earth, docking with something on the lunar surface and coming back. Brent there has been very little video footage provided by the chinese of this mission. It is not a manned mission. That is true but we were expecting there would be more video instead of these simulations that have been shared. Were you expecting more footage . Maria kolesnikova maybe they are just processing it. There is only so much you can get in real time. This does a lot of it on thinking about where it needs to go. I suspect that china will be more than eager to share exactly what has just been done with everybody. This is an unmanned spacecraft but the chinese also have this it is sort of like taking the spacecraft that just landed and making it bigger. Obviously, you want to practice with a small spacecraft firs but there has been very methodical way of going about learning how to do things in orbit, around the moon and on the lunar surface. Landers with rovers, now, a leer with a return capability. If anything, the chinese have been very methodical in improving each time they have done it. Brent they are learning with each step. Where would you rank where would you place the chinese Space Program in the hierarchy with the americans question mark with the russians . It is becomg a crowded place, outer space. Here was a song back in the 60s that said everyones going to the moon. That seems to be what is going on right now. China is probably on par with the u. S. And probably a bit better than russia. India has tried to land something, israel has tried to land something. I would say that china is at the top of the crop in terms of being able to do things around and on the lunar surface. Brent as always, we appreciate your time. We will give you a quick update on that breaking news story. Here is what we know about that car rampage. At least five people were killed when a speeding car plowed into triers the dextran zone. A baby was among the dead. The driver of the car was arrested at the scene, he has been identified as a 51yearold german local resident. Authorities say they see no sign that the incident was politically motivated. We want to change tracks here and turned to the mysteries surrounding a metal monolith in the u. S. State of utah. The ailing looking object was discovered in the alien looking object was discovered in the desert. Now it suddenly vanished. Some are wondering if it was put there and removed by some otherworldly powers. Like something from another world. A metal monolith hidden away in utahs red rock desert, a landscape that resembles that of planet mars. The intrepid explorers go down to investigate the alien life form. It was spotted from the Utah Department of Public Safety which was conducting an animal count. Some might suggest that discovering this three meter high structure was a welcome distraction from counting sheep. It certainly has people talking and investigating even the local authorities have tried to keep its location a secret. Is it solid . Not solid. It sounds a bit like a cardboard box. Scifi enthusiasts have linked the object to 2001 a space odyssey. In that movie, an alien monolith becomes a recurring symbol. I have heard everything from did this fall from the sky, implant itself there . Is it otherworldly . Wiout looking at a close and seeing that there are humid made rivets that put thisn together, you can definitely let your imagination run wild. Imaginations are definitely running wild now. Often new that the monolith has disappeared altogether. The work of extraterrestrials lets just say it is being taken by an unknown party.
