President donald trump has spent much of the campaign lauding his achievements in office. Lets take a look back at four eventful years. From this day forward it is going to be only america first, america first. President donald trump came barrelling out of the gate with a simple message. Hes the man to broker a better deal for the u. S. , an entrepreneur without any political or military history. Trump became the least experienced man to ever serve as commander in chief, instead relying on personality, business smarts and confidence. Were going to build the wall. Mexico is going to pay for the wall. Big on promises, but not always on follow through. Trump shunned traditional media. He used twitter to address supporters and denounce rivals. The United States will withdraw from the paris climate accord. Reporter his International Agenda was proudly pro american. His diplomatic methods, unconventional. But his Administration Says it leads to unprecedented moments like this. Trump says he and only he can get a deal on denuclearization with north korea, but the denuclearization process is at a standstill. In the middle east trump made good on a Campaign Promise to move the u. S. Embassy in israel to jerusalem, recognizing the city as its capital. Many worried some other moves would destabilize the region, including pulling out of the Iran Nuclear Deal and authorizing the killing of a top iranian general. At home, the president focused on the economy. I always say the most massive, but it is the largest tax cut in the history of our country. Reporter always a businessman at heart, he emphasized corporate aid while appealing to bluecollar workers. For a time unemployment dropped to 3. 5 , the lowest in half a century. But it wasnt all smooth sailing. Trump was impeached over allegations that he abused his power for political gain during a call with the ukrainian president. He was later acquitted. Black lives matter reporter in recent months racial divisions in the u. S. Widened. Protests sparked by the Police Killing of an unarmed black man spread throughout the country. When a small contingent of demonstrators turned violent, trump called for a crackdown. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them. Reporter there was also trouble in trade. Friction with china led to escalating tit for tat tariffs, and the most glaring of all challenges, the coronavirus pandemic. Chinese virus. Reporter the u. S. Has confirmed more cases than any other country. Trump blames china, but others say his early down playing of the danger was disastrous. Then just as trumps Reelection Campaign was coming to the final stage, he himself became infected. He deflected widespread criticism about spreading the virus, soon heading back to the campaign trail. Now in the midst of this national crisis, trump once again has a simple message. Mission accomplished. We have made america strong again. We have made america proud again. We will make america safe again. And you can find out more about trumps democratic rifle joe biden by heading to the nhk world website. Just scan the qr code on your screen. Now, the decision americans make today will surely have a major effect on lives around the world, including japan. Nhk worlds senior commentator tells us what we can expect from u. S. japan relations. Reporter whether it is four more years of President Donald Trump or a joe biden presidency, relations with japan will more than likely stay t same. But if u. S. Vers o for change we can expect a big difference in diplomatic style. Trump diplomacy, important to the art of the deal and creating personal relationships. By contrast, biden knows the standard system of diplomacy and works within its limits. He has experience on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as Vice President , and he will work as a team, listening to the state department. Trump took former Prime Minister to the golf course. If the next talks are with biden, i foresee a bit more formality. But this much is certain, the u. S. Can rely on japan as a key defensive ally. Right now the two countries are negotiating the costsharing agreement about u. S. Forces stationed in japan. After the election talks could heat up. Trump has been largely demanding that japan pay significantly more for salaries and base cost, but japan is resisting. Trump is with the idea of withdrawing troops to regain advantage. That is not a tactic biden is likely to use, but he will continue calling for higher fees as part of a broader u. S. Push to get allies to spend more on defense. As f what japan is hoping to see on election day, i dont think we will ever know for sure. After all, it is a whole lot safer to wait it out and say, this is just what i wanted no matter which candidate wins the white house. Now to another story making headlines today. Thank you for watching. Welcome to newsline in depth. Japans northern most prefecture hokkaido is home to a wide range of wildlife, however, many species are in danger of extinction such as the harbor sail sea otter, salamander and a salmon. Birds too are under threat. The United Nations convention on biological diversity is an International Treaty that works to promote sustainable development. Last month it issued a report reviewing the results of 20 environmental goals proposed in 2010. It says progress has been insufficient. One of those targets was to prevent the extinction of known threatened species and to improve and sustain their conservation status. Today we have two reports from hokkaido looking at the challeng challenges to protect wildlife there. First we look at the yellow breasted bunting, a Migratory Bird that breeds in the wetlands. As recently as the 1990s this species was found across hokkaido, but now it is critically endangered. We have a report on efforts to preserve it. Reporter because of its enchanting song, the yellowbreasted bunting is known in japanese as the fluidest of the grasslands. One man has been fighting hard to conserve this beautiful bird. He is from an organization devoted to the preservation of the ecosystem. Translator yellowinterested buntings used to live right here but since last year numbers have gone down drastically and theyre almost invisible now. Reporter its numbers have seen a sharp decline over the last three decades, to the point it is now found only in the region of sarabetsu. As of last year the number of nesting couples was down to just 14. Translator i used to think that even if it disappeared in other places it would still be okay here, but numbers have actually dropped. I even think it might go extinct so im really worried. Reporter the global population of this species has dropped by nearly 90 since the 1980s. It is now listed as critically endangered by the International Union for conservation of nature. The yellowbreasted bunting is a Migratory Bird. It spends summer in hokkaido and northern eurasia and the rest of the year thousands of kilometers south. Problem. Es the heart of the bunng i pular in southern chinas a delacy because of i purported healt benefits, and that has led to widespread this man spent years researching the issue for an International Conservation group. Since the 1980s there was an economic boom in china and they started to hunt them for commercial reason in large number. Because of that market demand that will actually get more birds being caught and getting more serious. Reporter the yellowbreasted bunting became a protected species in china in 1997, but that wasnt enough to stop poaching. The discovery earlier this year of an unknown virus in wuhan would turn out to be a game changer. The source of the coronavirus pandemic was traced to wildlife sold at markets for food. This led the Chinese National Peoples Congress to adopt strict regulations against wildlife trades. Authorities also upgraded the yellowbreasted buntings status as a protected species, putting it on par with the giant panda. Chan has been working hard to spread the word across southn china using posters, pamphlets and video documentaries. China has, to top the wildlife market, market and consumption. I would say that that may of course that may help to reduce the pressure on the yellowbreasted bunting. I think that gradually, slowly and slowly we will change the mindset of people. With me in the studio is our colleague who made that report. Thank you for joining us today. Im happy to be here. Now, one of the main factors that have pushed the yellowbreasted bunting to the brink of extension is poaching. Finally china has taken action. Tell us, what impact has this had on the situation . The conservationist i spoke to says there have been encoura encouraging signs this year. The breeding season is from may to august, and last year only 14 pairs there were seen, but this year the number of nestingairs rose to 18. He also told me that compared to last year their singing has been more noticeable. Really . What steps are being taken by him and his organization to encourage more of the birds to return to the area . Yellowbreasted bunting breeds in wetlands, but for many years the wetlands in hokkaido have been developed for agriculture or as pasture land. It is now japans only breeding ground for this bird, so but it is also under threat from development. To ensure the birds have their right environment for raising their young, the organization has been working with another group to raise funds. Thanks to donations, this year they were able to purchase about 15 hectares of wetland which is now designated as a sanctuary. He also told me that if the number of birds increases, they plan to buy more land in the future. Sounds promising. Well, to protect Migratory Birds International Cooperation must be essential. Has there been any progress in this field . Yes. Japanese and russian researchers are planning to cooperate on protecting the yellowinteresbr bunting, especially by conducting a joint survey. The group was planning to invite officials from hong kong for a briefing on the current conservation status, but because of the coronavirus pandemic this has been rescheduled until next year. As we saw in the video, restrictions on wildlife poaching were tightened in response to the pandemic, but there are reports that wildlife trafficking is flourishing again, in part because people there are confident the government has contained the coronavirus. It is important for researchers and government officials across east asia to Exchange Information and to take concrete action to protect not just the yellowbreasted bunting but all wildlife. So true. Thank you very much for your insights. Thank you. There is another bird species that has seen a recovery in its numbers thanks to years of conservation efforts. The redcrowned crane has a wing span of over two meters and its black and white plumage make it an iconic image against the snow fields of hokkaido. This graceful bird is considered a symbol of longevity and beauty in japan, and it is designated as a special national monument. However, as its population increases this rare species is facing new and dangerous challenges as we see in our next report. Reporter the cwetlands in hokkaido, the majestic redcrowned cranes has been tight. These cranes are increasingly falling prey to road accidents, especially over the past decade. Last year there were 38 confirmed crane deaths due to vehicle collisions, the highest number since records began. And countless birds have been injured after getting tangled in fences and nets. Whats behind all of the injuries . For one, humans encroaching on their habitat. Another reason, a successful Restoration Program thats brought the crane population back to around 1,800 compared to 33 in 1957. Injuries through human activity. These birds are taken to a zoo near the wetlands, and theyre fitted with prosthetics. The zoo is the only center in japan that offers this kind of rehabilitation. Veterinarian hiroko who treats them says the artificial limbs can extend lives. Translator if a crane cant walk, it feels stressed. It wont be able to eat or reach its food. Not being able to stand can be fatal to these birds. Reporter six years ago after seeing yet another injured crane brought in, iima hit on the idea of prosthetics. Translator this little one was discovered with its lower left leg in a necrotic state. Reporter if the bird could walk again, its life span could be extended. After much trial and error, she eventually succeeded with her prosthetic limb. Paying close attention to composition, she adjusts each legs length to match the owners stub. The outer blue portion, made of hard synthetic resin, supports body weight. The narrow interior part is made of resin and gently yet firmly connects to what remains of the cranes leg. Iima has outfitted seven cranes with her handmade devices, allowing at least one to survive for about five years. Autumn is an especially worrisome time as chicks born in the spring become active. Translator i hope our work will inspire people to think about the best way for cranes and humans to coexist. As the u. N. Report reminds us, the coronavirus paenl ndemi not only a Public Health crisis, it is an urgent reminder of the critical need for coexistence between humans and wildlife. Development at the expense of wilderness habitats is endangering our own living spaces. The fact that so many species are under threat is a warning signal for us to reconsider the way we are damaging our environment in the name of growth and development. Thats it for todays edition of newsline in depth. Thank you for watching and see you again next time. Long lines across america. Voters turn out in big numbers following an unprecedented election campaign. With the big rallies behind them, donald trump and joe biden make a final appeal to supporters. Hello youre watching al jazeera live from london. Coming up, in some he states, they could have a delayed final result
