That is what this case reaffifirmed today, in pararticr for our transgender community. Talking aboutppression n that goeses beyond the workplace, tht this is another steppingstone to understanding that this exists in our country, and to overcoming the barriers that we have just because of who we love and how we live our lives. I began as reporter 1986 and have worked in so many countries around the world. Ive been shot at and threatened, but never this kind of death by a thousand cuts. The case was closely watched as a test of purse freedom under president duterte. Even though the article in question was published four months before the cybercrime law was enacted. Theyre not the only Philippine Media to face problems with the authorities. Last month, one of the countries leading broadcasters was shut down. The German Government says it plans to take a 23 stake in the private Biotech Company that is working on a covid19 vaccine. That steak will cost 300 million euros. It is based here in germany and is about to begin Clinical Trials for a coronavirus taxing later this month. Heres a closer look at the company that is attracting both scientific and political attention. Its one of the big helps when it comes to d developing a vaccine against the coronavirus. This method is particularly promising. Now ththe German Government has taken a 20 stake in the company, giving it a 300 million euro boost. This investment is a way of providing them with security so that it can continue to work with commitment toward producing a vaccine. Cure back hit the headlines earlier this year when the u. S. Government allegedly attempted to entice the company over to america. Mondays move is therefore all about sending a clear message about the governments industrial policy. We want high tech businesses, companies which serve people, to continue to develop their products in germany and europe, and we want to ensure such companies have the conditions they need here. Curevac is such a company. June will see the first Clinical Trials with healthy volunteers. There are more than 120 vaccine projects currently underway worldwide, no one knows when and if a vaccine will be found. Brent im joined at the big table by my colleague in business correspondent, chelsea. Its good to see you. Is the first time youve been here at the big table with me. Its good to have you here. The story specs the question, one is the German Government making this investment now . Chesea theres a couple of reasons. First, there is a huge rush going on right now to o get to a vaccine because life and economies will not return to normal until we get a vaccine. So a lot of governments and a lot of companies are really pushing forward with plans for a vaccine. The other thing for germany is that they really do want to focus on creating a homegrown pharmaceutical and biotech industry. The pandemic has really highlighted the risks for a lot of countries and outsourcing all these former google pharmaceutical and germany sees it as a National Security risk. We have seen this become a bigger and bigger topic for germany. I want to ensure that they have companies within their borders that can respond to Health Crises in the future. Brent is it a Good Business decision, though . Because we still dont have a vaccine. Chesea we dont know if this is going to be successful. Almost all vaccines fail. Its extremely expensive to create. Curevac is one of the smaller players in the game. Its competing with Big Companies like pfizer and astrazeneca. We dont know how its going to shake out. But we have seen some pretty good results in animal testing. They are doing a special type of vaccine called an mra vaccccine. It is supposed t to be much similar simpler to create. Its s one of the reasons why it is seen as a good investment for the German Government right now. Brent weve got about 30 seconds. This is the company that donald trump reportedly tried to buy earlier this year. Why are these vaccines suddenly becoming so political . Chesea you have to consider that it comes in the backdrop of huge tensions between the u. S. , europe, china, theres so much nationalism going on an Economic Policy in general and politics in general. Thats one of the bigger pressures but it also has highlighted the concern that once a vaccine is found, that it wont be distributed in it democratic way. Countries like the u. S. And germany that had the funding to invest will have first access, and its going to be every man for himself. Brent chelsea delaney, excellent reporting, thank you very much. Tomorrow, tuesday, germany starts rolling out a track and trace Smartphone App hoping to stop the spread of coronavirus. Germany is following italy and france, which launched their own apt two weeks ago. User privacy and Data Protection are big concerns here. We had this next report from paris. Michel aoun loadaded stop cod as soon as it was launched. Users who test positive get a barcode that can enter in the app that alerts other users theyve been in close contact with. The app is on a voluntary basis and obviously doesnt replace other measures like face masks. But its one out of several tools that can help protect me and the people i meet. Michelle hasnt tested positive, nor has she received an alert. There are no official figures of how many alerts have been sent out so far, but she still hopes the app will be effective. I know that there have been epidemics in the past, but i never thought i would live to experience one. It is frightening and very worrying and its too early to say if it is over. We need to keep up our guard. But only about 2 of people and france have downloaded the app so far. Many are concerned the government might use stop covid to track could be track people. But michelle says that doesnt bother her. Its very easy to know where people have been at a certain point in time. Stop covid is not a threat. Michelle hopes more people will use the app and that the covid19 epidemic soon becomes a thing of the past. Brent the private Space Technology company spacex is steadily expanding its network of satellites. The satellites will provide spacebased Internet Connectivity around the world. On saturday, the Company Launched a rocket from cape canaveral, carrying 60 of it start link satellites into orbit. The company has 500 satellitess circling the planet and p plan o have 12,000 in orbit around the earth. 12,000. The growing number of satellites in orbit is wearing some astronomers who say there cluttering the skies and interrupting our ability to research asteroids. My colleague is a stargazer, here at the big table. 12,000 is a lot of of satellites by any measure. What does it look like . Star link is both beautiful and terrifying. Ive seen it myself. I was on holiday in the amazon jujungle in cololumbia a and i d upup and saw a s string of lighs moving across the sky. I had no i idea what i was lookg at. Some of our viewers mightve seen sometething similar followg this launch. What we are e looking at as they are e putting themsmselves inn position. Overer te theyey sprd out t a bt more, one at a a time. Lalaunches are happening withh c frequenc t that sitess l like ts are becoming m more and morere common. Asase said,d,40 are up there alalready. Put t that in context, thats around 20 of all active satellites orbiting the earth. They have even bigger plans to put 12,000 up there. Thats how many theyve got permission for. They will surround the plan around the planet to provide connectivity to many different places. Brent you could say theres so much space, its infinity. Can it really be crowded . Can there be too many satellites . Somewhat also say its great to have internet where we wanted to beat it also comes at a cost. A telescope leaves a streak in the very sensitive imagery. Astronomers are worried that will be interrupting those kinds of observations. I had a chat with a professor who has been researching the impact of star link on astronomy. He said this is not only impacting the science, but it may impact the ability of humanity to survive in the long run. This and carefully to what he has to say about kililler asteroids. Lisisten carefully. Are we at a tuturning cocourr astronomy . Yes, we are. This is potentialllly an existential threatat to grgroundbased astrononomy. The problem of near eararth objectcts, killer asteroids, the surveyeys that go r r them more wiwidefield and they go low on ththe horizon, andnd they work t at sunset a and sunrise. Thats where the more sensititie defining killer asteroids that might impact the earth. So theyre doing a lot of short exsusures to try to cover asas much sky as possible. There, the satellite impacts will be very severe. Typically the way the planets are found as you monitor a star for a long time and you look for dips in the light curve. Those dips canan be quite s sho. So if a satellite goes across a star at the moment youre expecting a dip, you are in trouble. So if the professor is correct, not only can the satellites interrupt our view of the coming asteroid that will destroy our planet, but it will also block our view to the planet to which we might be able to escape. Brent how has spacex responded to this criticism . I mean, this is serious stuff. They have modified the design so they have more shading a different kind of paint so they are less reflective and less visible to the human eye, but they are still interrupting telescopic observations, so that problem hasnt been fixed. It gets worse, there are more countries thinking of launching. The astronomers i talked to say its not too late to act. We need to come together and create a new global agreement about how many satellites there should be in space and how they are governed. We could be living in epoque changing moment, when we tell our children we were living in the time before star link. Brent before we had traffic jams on highways and in the skies, i guess you could say. After three months of lockdowns, many countries are reopening their borders for summer tourism. Spain is kicking things off of the Pilot Project that has invited a select group of German Tourists to the island of mallorca where they will test the new Public Health measures that are aimed at preventing a new publblic outbreak. Official footage from the first plane load of German Tourists allowed to land in mallorca on a trial run. They can hardly wait t for their holiday to begin. Im happy to be back. I think the e Spanish Government has done a great job of repairing things. This is going to be a great vacation. A bit quieter, but that is how it should be. Hotel staff welcomed the first arrivals as applause, glad to be e finally open for busines again, as is europes bigiggest totourism company. Travel is our livelihood, especially marketiting air trav. Its increredibly importatant fr us. Anand for thehe region as well,n you consider how m many jobs depepend on tourism. But the impact ofof the Coronavirus Crisis is evident barely a few meters away from the beach. Many restaurants and bars are still shut. Some hotels may never reopen. Thousands of people have lost their job, and many of them are obliged to stand in line for food, like here. Volunteers here can hardly meet the demand, which took them byby surprise. We usus to help around 750800 people. Now we have nearly 8000. Thats why everyone here once the rest of the tourism season to be a success. Numbers are up from the previous week when european travelers were able to come here. Mallorca is a employing technologies to keep the risk of infection to a minimum. Sensors will pick up mobile phone signals stood german when an area is too crowded, because the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. Brent that is true. His reminder of our top story this hour. The u. S. Supreme court has ruled it is illegal to fire workers aced on their Sexual Orientation or gender identity. The landmark 1964 civilrights act bans discrimination based on sex, also protects gay and transgender people. This is dw news. After a short break, ill be back to take you through the day.
