If they admit prpracticing their religion is a crime. A former cape towown gang leader distributive food to people hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Dw looks at whether this good gangster is as innocent as he seems. Brent to our viewers on pbs in the United States and to our viewers all around the world, welcome. We begin tonight in houston, texas, where thousands are lining up to pay final respects to george floyd. He is the africanamerican who died in Police Custody weeks ago in minneapolis. His death has sparked global protest. A sixour public viewing of the casket is taking place at the fountain of praise church in houston, texas. Houston is w where floloyd was raised and where he lived before moving to minneapolis severaral yearars ago. The Funeral Service will be held in private on tuesday. And dws olivers is at the fountain of praise church in houston, texas. Houston is the city where he grew up, the city where he will say a final goodbye. Are the people there morning him as one of their own . Oliver well, it l looks like i, brent. If you look at the amount of pepeople attending todays publc viewing here at the fountain of praise, the lines are very long. Thousands are expected throughout the day. There is a lot of traffic jamming the surrounding areas. People are waiting to get inside the church where the body of george floyd is laid out. People want to bid farewell and pay their final respects to them , of course. Not only members of the black community, but also white people who are supporting the black lives matter movement, as we have seen also in other countrieies, not only the United States, and in recent days and weeks. Now, o of course, ththe atmospre isis a a sad one, but there is o some optimism, but lets lilistn in bececause i had a chance to speak to some of the peoeople attending todays public viewing. Well, this is an n importantt time in our world, and i feel that it is necessary for me to be here, number one as s a human being, for the humuman race,e, d then me being an africanamerican man, i would not miss this for the world. A man came from nowhere a man came from nowhere, no one would d have ever known him, he has been to high school, some college, a humble man, a and he rose from that t to today, which is what you see. H he died in power, this is e Biggest Movement in my life, the biggest Civil Rights Movement in history, and we have the honor as h hstonians, as citizens to lay this meant to rest in power. What people have the luxury to assume the police are good. But people do not have that luxury in america. Oliver any emotional day for the people in the public, but there is also a political dimension. President ial hopeful joe biden, we understand, is traveling to houston today. Why . Oliver that is right. The politital dimensision, bren, starts with the Approval Ratings of president ntrump goingng dowon about how he e handled the pandemic, the protests, and the riots here inin the states following the dedeath of georgee floyd, and at the same time joe bidens Approval Ratings going up. Now he has tried to support the black community by coming here, visiting the family members of george floyd, giving them his sympathies. Lets also not forget joe biden is a respepected personn in thte black and it appeared he was the Vice President of americas first black president , barack obama, and we are in the middle of the election campaign, and certainly he is tried to capitalize on that. Brent thank you to oliver in houston, texas, on this final Memorial Service for george floyd. Oliver, thank you. A judge in minneapolis has set valid 1. 2 5 million for the former Police Officer who is being charge with seconddegree murder in George Floyds death. That is after Derek Chauvin, you see him right hand, mate right there, made his first court appearance. He accepted the bail terms, which includes no contact with floyds family, no working in a Law Enforcement capacity, not leaving minnesota, and he has to surrender all firearms in good shape for more on this all firearms. For more on this, lets go to washington, d. C. What is at stake in this trial for this former policeman who was charged with seconddegree murder . Everything and nothing. Let me explain everything, because the Africanamerican Community in minneapolis specifically had asked for, was adamant about a strong charge for Derek Chauvin, not. , but now a seconddegree murder charge, and it was very important for people to in minneapolis who had a very strong opinion about the police. Of course, and the Justice System as being corrupt and unequal to them, to the Africanamerican Community in minneapolis. So, yes, this is really, really important that this Pretrial Hearing happened, and even if mr. Shaaban was only mr. Derek chauvin was only the event link in the courtroom, there was a sigh of relief, so to speak, going through the community that this is now actually happening. The bell is interesting 1 million and all the restrictions he said. Lets not forget the man is under suicide watch 24 hours, seven days a week because authorities think he is in danger of taking his own life or harming himself giving this given the situation. A belle, giving up his weapons, no contact with the floyd family, of course, all of this mix sense to have those restrictions with the bai. A very important dayl for the Africanamerican Community in minneapolis, and it does not matter, really, because the movement is way more way bigger across United States, no disrespect to mr. Floyd. Brent and to what is happened to him. That has that is true. We have heard no justice, no peace, the current slogan of the protest. Someone say it is a promise. Some would say also that it is a threat. Can the trial deliver the justice that it is demanding . Yes, in terms of being a first step. A tiny step. No, if you look at the whole picture from a broader perspective, because africanamericans in this country here are saying this protest, triggered by what happened to mr. Floyd by the knee of mr. Derek chauvin, the Police Officer, triggered rage and anger against injustices all over the country structural, systemic racism in institutions and society in america the Justice System, the health system, police, etc. , etc. That is the bigger thrust the whole movement has. And people say this is a movement now, and with that the whole thing blows up to something really, really big here in the United States. Brent and a lot of people are looking for change and reform. This is not just about one policeman anymore. It is about reforming policing as a whole. The city of minneapolis has voted to dismantle the police force there. I want to take a listen to what lisa bender, the Minneapolis City Council president , had to say. Lisa our commitment is to and our citys toxic relationship with the Minneapolis Police department, to end policing as we know it, and to recreate systems of Public Safety that actually keep us safe. Brent to end policing as we know it, stephan, what does that mean . Are we talking about minneapolis, a metropolitan area of about 4 million people, devoid of any policing . Stephan no, that is not what it means. Nobody suggests it is to abolish police, to get rid of the Police Department, to get rid of policing communities. I think everyone agrees, even in minneapolis, City Council Members have raised red policing and a Quarter Foundation of how Society Works not just in america, minneapolis, but everywhere in the world. What those councilmembers in the city of minneapolis recognize is this the Police Department in minneapolis in specific had a longstanding, grave, miserable, relationship with its own community, specifically with the Africanamerican Community, and just the reform of a, now we are not allowing choke holds anymore, and now a Police Officer has to actually intervene if he sees a fellow officer doing somethng wrong that is just not enough. Dismantling is coming this case, and i think i say i think, because they are not really clear on the actual measures they want to take, but that is at least the estimate and the take of this Police Department in their relationship in the relationship to the community, and get better policing for the community, so no one has to be afraid. Specifically, no africanamerican has to be afraid to go to the store to get a gallon of milk and being arrested on the spot or even die. Brent we have to say the minneapolis would not be thehe first municipality that has dismantled its police force. It has been done before. Stefan simons in our washington bureau. Thank you. Here are some of the other store is now making headlines around the world. Germanys defense minister says the u. S. s government reported stance to drawback troops in germany by one. Were now two adw exclusive investigation a d exclusive investigation chinas the remote region in chinas far northwest is offlimits to international journalists. Muslim uighur, who make up most of the regions muslim people have faced lengthy prison sentences. The Dw Investigative Team has found that many imprisoned uighurs inside those camps have been chosen forced to choose from a list of crimes they did not commit unenforced into sham trials. Dw spoke with peopople that escaped from the netrk of repressionon. W dont have any freedom at all. You u are monitored 24 7. They can interrorogate you any timeme by even at t night when u arare asleep. The woman i was with and that up therere because they had worn a headscarf, prayed, or traveled abroad. There was not a single criminal among them. That is the voice of a woman that spent almost a year inside of a reeducatition camp inin ch. We are keeping her identity a secrcret in order to protect her famimily in the remote regioioin nortest china. Itit is home to the uighurs, a predominantly muslim ethnic. The kakansas statesponsored discrimination against them has fed into discontent and at times violence, including riots and terror attacks. In response, china has cracked down on uighurs, and built up a close knit surveillance system. The authorities have imprisoned more than one million people. The Chinese Government claims the camps were set up to fight extremism and provide uighurs with vocationanal skills. Detainees and documents contraradict the n narrative. They are targeted based on little more than their culture andd religion and are forced to undergo a draconian, and often brutal brainwashing program. Even more chilling evidence of ththe repression of uighurs. We spoke to former detainees who vanished managed to escape chinas vast network of reeducation camps. One day they were handed a list of alleged crimes. It was one page of paper. We had to choose one item. We started reading it and it said wearing a headscarf, profane, owning a koran, phoning or contacting people abroad, they were threatening us, saying you will stay here until you pick a crime. I signed a paper and p put my fiererprints a few days after the woman was forced to sign the list, official started calling of people one by one for what amounts to a sham trial. There were no lawyers. They would read out the judgment and the detainee would have to say i confess my crimes and promise i wont repeat my wrongdoings. We analyze satellite imagery and publicly a available materis suchch as construction bidids ad managed to locate three camps were thesese trials happened in 2018 from three different locations across shin zhang. After the trials, detainee started disappearing. Some were picked up at night. Others led away from their classrooms, never to return. But it seems that for only those that had confessssed to religios acts in the sham trials were picked up. This is another indication that china is targeting uighur culture and religion. The women on the other detainees we talked to managed to escape to neighboring kazakhstan, as those with residency or family members were eventually allowed to leave china. My husbands days have changed. Sometimes i get very angry for no reason and start screaming in the middle of the night. I am so exhausted all the time. Brent my colleague is part of the Investigative Team who put that story together. It is a fascinating story. Excellent report. What comes to mind is the question, why do you think china feels it has to go through the motions of these sham trials when everything is being done in secret anyway . This is also a question we have for the chinese authorities. We try to reach out to them to get an answer, but they never got back to us about these trials. One possibility is that because in the past few years these reeducation camps and the repression of the uighur minorities have been widely reported in the international media, and that gives china a lot of pressure, and these kinds of trials can give china slightly more legitimate reasons to transfer these detainees from caps to present, so they camps to prison, so they can give an answer. Brent some type of legal cover. We heard in the report that some detainees disappear after the trials. Doing know what happens to them . It is hard to say for sure where they went, where they have gone, but from the witness, we know it is highly possible that they are taken to a highsecurity Detention Camp or a prison, but since there is no official documents, or even we dont have documents about the names of people that went through the trials. It is really hard to say for sure. Brent the Chinese Government claimed earlier this is that everyone who had received this socalled reeducation and had gone through the camp, they would graduate, and if they graduated, they are, according to china, leading happy lives now. What do we know . Is that true . From our research, this is absolutely not true. As you can see from the report, many are taken to prison or these highsecurity detention centers. From satellite image that we analyzed, we can see these highsecurity facilities have expanded in the past years. It is likely that many detainees are still being kept in these camps, and also, we solve reports that some of these detainees were actually transferred to factories inside or across other cities in china. So, they were forced to work in factories as false labor, and some of these factories produce for international companies, including german companies. Brent your reporting is important to get these stories out, and it leads us to the question of what is being done internationally to put pressure on china over the treatment of its uighur minority. So far the International Committee has been quite about this. The eu discussed targeted sanctions against officials who are responsible for the repression of uighurs, but so far it is quiet, especially germany. They did not make a strong statement, but a thrall china is a strong trading partner of germany, and it is really a choice of the economy and human rights. Brent a very important story. Thank you.
