That is it for this edition. Do stay with us here on france 24. Embroidery and all sorts of textiles, he creates multilayered luminous images that tell quietly compelling stories. The artist has a studio in south africa. She joins us here to tell us more about her work. Your latest exhibition is called a soldier of love. It is here in paris. Before we take aa look at the visual aspect of the pieces, can you tell us more about the scenes . We often do not see those two ideas next to each other, that is military defense and love. I called the show soldier of love because i feel we live in very difficult times where there is a lot of pain and suffering people a are inflicting againint each othther all over the world. I feeeel we have forgotten the basics, which is love, love of huhumanity, lovove of the world. I f feel like i need to be partf that crusade or thehe army that brings love back. The reason it is soldiering is because in fact people are a bit jadeded. There is that this idedea tht love that thinking love is the answer 12 mans suffering is idealistic. I think it is possible the answswer t to all of mans suffg is idealistic. I think ed is possible. Think it isi possible. Here is a look at soldier of love. When i first saw your work i thought they might be paintings or collages using paper, in fact to these are made at a fabric. How does that affect the images you create working with textiles . Influenced by paininting and pririntmaking and collagee r rg and in general jut collage ring collaging. Fabric iswork with a the way i was trained to work in printmaking. You start withdrawing in a piece of paper on a piece of paper then you use that as a template. I have swapped ink and paper with fabric. Working with fabric or embroidery for that matter has sometimes been regulated to the world of craft and did not relegated to the world of craft. It has been consnsidered a feminine practice. Technique you use conveys something more feminine . Myit was very deliberate on part. Mainly because when i was in university i was told i shouldnt make art that showed my identity as a woman and i felt very offended. I felt a message being given to me was there is something shameful about being a woman. I felt it was important for me to rebel against these patriarchal ideas. I thought, whahat can i do that will be as female as possible, but then i will seduce them by making it contemporary fine art so they cannot dispute the fact that it is fine art and not craft. I persevered simply because when you are an artist you have to stand up agagainst criticism otherwise it is not the right profession for you. It is my feminist statement. Work isof your biographical. How comfortable are you telling you your own story or giving people access to your life, your personal life, through your art . The funny thing is i am a complete introvert so i think this is like e creating a balale for me in a w way. I am so clclosed in my e everydy life and i stay home a lot and i have a very good friends and i do not let everyone in but that i share my personal experiences with the world. That is me creating a balance in my identity so i am not completely closed or revealing myself completely to everyone who comes around. My searches for connection. I feel connection is also lost. Connection has been lost people are lonely, they are sad, they feel isolated. The way to connect with another person is to show your vulnerability. A way to do that is to expose yourself in your private moments. Africa. Ork in south the african continent is currently the subject of an exhibition at the pompadour in paris, specifically in its relationship with china, examining the economic ties between the two powers. Postcolonialthe era in their particular societies. It is an exploration of a new space. From collective memory to intimate personal l accounts, ts is a a dialogueue between african and asian artists. Examples of how the continent has become fertile oil ground for Chinese Investment and cultural Fertile Ground for Chinese Investment. It is nothing new. Chinese presence in africa goes back farther than you would think so the exhibition is a way every contextualizing history. People think china has only had presence in africa for 10 or 15 years, but it has been much longer. Wereiwanese artists inspired by ming dynasty coins found d in kenya, deconstructing typical l narrativives around te relationship. N this exhibition asks whether africa is that liberated by colonialism only to be taken over by another global power. Western history has perhaps pushed to one side or ignored this narrative for a certain amount of time. The reception of an artwork when it leaves its home culture does change to a certain extent. I know you have work in the Smithsonian Museum in washington. How do you describe the response to your art in france or in the u. S. Once it left its home and it was being shown abroad . America, i seememed to touch the Africanamerican Community because i was actualay showing the intimate lives of a black person, which was not really happening in america. For them it had an effective connection but in a way to mystify black lives because there you are in your home doing just what everybody else does in their home. Your studio is based in johannesburg. You grow up in botswana and your family hails from malawi and south africa. Do you feel you had f from a panafrican experience . Mixed in mye perspectives and experiences. I do not just have a malawi experience. I do not have the apartheid experience at all. That sets me apart from other artists in south africa. They are still dealing with the postapartheid, but i am at a level where i am like univerl love and promoting women and projecting posositive images instead of r reliving t trauma. I feel like after r a while reliliving trauma can actutually hahave the opposite effect and then it stops you from moving on. That is what my images are doing , creating some kind of a balance between depicting images of, and how it affected people and being an african who has family that were traumatized, but then i wasnt and what is my african perspective . And merging the two. Us inasked you to point the direction of an artistic project that we should check out. You flagged this one, which takes in six different art initiatives in south africa. Walk.
