Thunberg sales across the atlantic again with a climate warning. She says drastic measures are needed to cut co2 emissions as she prepares to deliver her message to the human United NationsClimate Summit. And there is where tonight the white house will allow Major League Baseball players to once again head south for offseason play. Im brent goff. Two viewers pbs in the United States and all around the world, welcome. We begin tonight with nato at 70. Leaders of nato members are meeting in london seeking to paper over the cracks amid obvious divisions in the military alliance. Right now, the leaders are in Buckingham Palace for reception hosted by the queen to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of nato. It follows a public spat between french president Emmanuel Macron and u. S. President donald trump. When those leaders sat down earlieier today, it was hard to prededict how the m meeting woud go. Take a look. Would you like some of those isis fighters . I could give them to you. Everyone you want. A not quite cordial combative tone pervaded the News Conference with u. S. President donald trump and his french counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the nato meeting in london on tuesday. Trump sharply rebuked president macron for sayingg in an interview with the magazine the economist last month that what we are currently experiencing is the brain death of nato. Its a very tough statement to make when you have such difficululty in france. You look at what has happeneded with yellow vests or whats going on during certain parts of their season, they have had a very rough year. You just cannott go around makig statements like that about nato. Its very disrespectful. Macron, however, did not back down. My statements created some reaction. The two leaders seem to have differing visions of the role of nato. Everyone the one that benefits the least is the United States. We benefit the least. We are helping europe. Another of the alliances big players, german chancellor, remained upbeat about nato. With all the differences and of course we will have to discuss them we have to talk about the fututure of nato and e strategic partnership. Im fairly optimistic about this meeting. Optimism alone, however, will not be enough to bridge the divide within the alliance. Brent let us go now to our correspondent, max h hofmann. He joins us from london. Good evening to you, max. President macron and trump have they been able to iron out their differences . Max there would have been a lot of reasons to be mad at each other and have their differences. One of them, for example, european spending for defense. Donald trump has always criticized that europeans are not doing enougugh, or, of cour, you mentioned in ththat report, the alleged brain death of nato, as you might remember the french president called it, but they did not talk much about that. It seemed more like a conciliatory meeting, and the reason for that is that this is the 70th anniversary celebration of nato. Despite all the problems nato has at the moment, they are saying, lets not talk about this, at least not now for this anniversary. Brent the u. S. President , donald trump, has criticized nato a lot and now is claiming credit for what he says are reforms at nato. Is he justified in claiming credit . He is especially taking credit for the increased spending by most of the allies in nato since he took office. The numbers are undeniable spending has gone up significantly. The official goal of nato is to have its members spend 2 of gdp on defense. In the beginning when donald trump took office, there were only three countries that met that goal, including the United States of america. Now we are at nine countries, so that is undeniable, eveven thouh Many Alliance members have consistently criticized the way donald trump has done this, the tone, the blackmailing, as some call this off the record. The n numbers are there. Brent stand by. We are going to come back to you in just a moment. We going out to another point of contention at this nato summit, and that is turkeys intervention in syria. Turkish troops launched an offensive to clear kurdish troops, drawing international condemnation. Now turkey wants to move refugees of syrias civil war into the region. A turkish patrol unit in the northern syrian city on the border with turkey this is where ankara wants to resettle refugees in a socalled safe zone as soon as possible. It was stretch about 100 kilometers westward it would stretch. But the area lacks housing and schools, so ankara is seeking money to Fund Construction work, something the representative of president erdogans akp party is keen to emphasize. They should support turkey so that all the refugees can return to their homeland and live good lives. But there have been repeated explosions within the planned safe zone. Several people have been killed. Ankara blames the kurdish ypg militia. Others say the socalled Islamic State is responsible. Kurds in the region are deeply skeptical about if the zone should be regarded as safe. With the current situation, the United Nations should really intervene. Many kurds make it clear that turkish troops are not welcome here, greeting their tanks with a barrage of stones. Brent lets go back to our correspondent, max hofmann, in london. Turkey looks a lot like the black sheep in nato. We know that its president met this evening with the leaders of britain, germany, france, and downing street for a summit about turkeys military intervention in northern syria. Has there been any result from them . Max turkey at least has a very different approach to doing things, and that, by the way, is one of the reasons Emmanuel Macron says they do not necessarily have the same foundations anymore, if they cannot even agree on what is and is not a terrorist. So your definition of a black sheep would probably be shared by some of those nato member states, and thats why a lot of people were anticipating this meeting that took place in london today between Emmanuel Macron, the french president , boris johnson, the u. K. Prime minister, the german chancellor, Angela Merkel, and also president erdogan of turkey. When merkel came out of the meeting, she was very Angela Merkel, saying this was a good start, a good meeting. They talked about the socalled fighting the socalled Islamic State and working together with the United Nations to take care of refugees in the area and that further steps would follow, so not really much criticism here towards president erdogan, which is typical of Angela Merkel because that is the thinking behind it. She knows that as soon as you criticize him heavily, he just shuts down. What she wants is to communicate, to find a solution, somehow to convince him to stop what he is doing. Brent if we put aside for a second the problems, we have to also remember the events in london are meant to commemorate 70 years of nato. Is there real reason to celebrate this anniversary . Max it really depends on who you ask. The alliance is still here after 70 years, and that is a success in itself. It makes it a successful alliance. Of course, it has its ups and downs, and it has never been as challenged as now, at least in recent years. During the cold war, of course, there was pressure from the outside, a common enemy the soviet union put everybody on the same page, but it has become more difficult. The world itself has become more difficult, but still, many would argue it is a successful alliance. I have they have informed themselves, for example with readiness plans, but undeniably, there are so many problems that it has become more difficult to have this united front. It is more difficult to Work Together because the problems are multilayered, and allies are not necessarily in agreement on all those issues. Brent correspondent max hofmann live in london tonight. Thank you. Here are some of the other stories making headlines around the world the evidence for impeaching President Donald Trump for misconduct in office is overwhelming thats the verdict on the final report from the house investigation into the u. S. President. The white house dismissed the report, saying it failed to produce any evidence of wrongdoing. Germanys defense minister has made an unannounced visit to afghanistan. Annegret krampkarrenbauer says it should be extended beyond march of next year when it is scheduled to end. A typhoon has hit the philippines, leaving at least twtwo people dead. Torrentiti rain and d wind of me than 50 kilometers an hour. Felled trees and electrical lines have forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate. Manilas International Airport was shut down with hundreds of flights canceled. Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has arrived in portuguese capital lisbon and is headed for the Climate Summit in madrid. She was in the United States for climate protests. She made the entire transatlantic crossing, you may remember, by boat and refused to fly back to europe because of the Carbon Footprint created by flying. The final moments of a nearly threeweek journey across the Atlantic Ocean from the United States to lisbon, portugal. Greta thunberg looked tired and happy to be back on dry land. The 16yearold swede said she took the transatlantic voyage by boat to o prove a point. Im not traveling like this because i want everyone to do so. Im doing this to sort of send a message that it is impossible [cheers and applause] that it is impossible to live sustainable today, and that needs to change. It needs to become much easier. She arrives in europe as the United NationsClimate Summit is in full swing. Reppert representatives and delegates from some 200 countries have gathered in madrid, spain, to try to find a way to reduce the worlds emissions of greenhouse gases. Their arrival also coincided with the release of a bleak report from the World Meteorological organization, predicting the last decade will likely be the hottest in recorded history. Totenberg dunbar credits on berks as many do not realize the power of the Popular Movement that may have been released. I think people are underestimating the force of angry kids. [cheers and applause] Greta Thunberg says she will meet with activists in lisbon before making her way to the Climate Summit on wednesday. Brent to discuss that report from the World Meteorological looking, i am joined here by the director at the institute of meteorology at the Free University in berlin, uwe ulbr ich. What in the report is the most troubling to you . About what should we be alarmed . The report also says, apart from what we observed, that theres mechanisms that coululd enhance the development we are currently facing. Theres not only the atmospheric temperature that people talk about, but theres also for example the acidity of the oceans, which may affect marine life. Brent it could kill lots of species, right . It could, yeah. If they are not adapted to that, they cannot adapt that quickly to that situation. Brent you are a meteorologist. You deal with the weather. Do you think that scientists as well as journalists are we doing a good job educating the public about how weather, climate, and Climate Change are connected . Well, i am not quite sure that it is really optimal how we are communicating things because there is the issue of likelihoods that is greatly underestimated. In my opinion, it is a very Good Development that we are now pushing politics to do something, but the background of it is maybe a chance that we had , really extremely hot weather in germany, while the geneneral average e temperature is on thte rise and so the report says is not unexpected. Brent it is basically telling us the world is getting hotter, the weather is getting more extreme. Everyone likes to talk and complain about the weather, but they usually say you cannot do anything about it. Is that true, though, in your opinion . Have we reached a point where we have to do something to impact the weather in the climate . Weather is what we have in the moment, and the climate is the aggregation of all weather, and the climate is changing, so the likelihoods of certain extreme weather, which is most relevant, of course, to us, that is changing, so we are facing more extremes in certain aspects and in others not. Cold spells become less unlikely when weather gets warmer, but we are further from presentday climate. Brent i think most people now perceive the weather has become more extreme. How confident are you that what is happening in madrid, the paris climate agreement, that those agreements are going to be successful in slowing down Climate Change . Is it going to work . I think there are the first steps in now, but there is the need of more steps to come, and what is most important is the politics enables people to follow climate neutral pathway, and this is currently not sufficiently done. I think people want to do something about it, but they do not feel theres adequate possibilities to do that. Brent i know i hear a lot of people say they feel helpless. Maybe they dont know what they could do. Professor, we appreciate your time and insights tonight. Thank you. Here are other stories now that are making news around the world. In the sudanese capapital khartoum, an explosion inside a tile factory has killed at least 23 people. Police say more than 130 were being treated for injuries. Officials say the blaze erupted when a gas tanker exploded while unloading cargo at the factory. Sudan has suffered a number of industrial accidents in recent months. Finlands Prime Minister has resigned over his goverernments handling of a twoweek p postal strike. The social democrat quit after one of his Coalition Partners said it had lost confidence in him. The Current Administration will stay on until a new one is formed. North Korean Leader kim jongun has opened a flagship construcuction project near the mountain where his family claims its roots. Today is the United NationsInternational Day of persons with disabilities. There are one billion People Living with disabilities worldwide. Thats 15 of the global population. According to the world health organization, 80 of disabled people live and what is known as the global south, which means they often have poor medical and social conditions to deal with. In some countries, up to a quarter of disabilities result not from birth but from injuries in life. In germany, many see inclusion is the main challenge. The goal is for people with disabilities to be completely integrated into society. Every day, they clean the area outside a Daycare Center in berlin. Hes contributing to Society Despite his condition. He has down syndrome. Together with other severely disabled people, he is part of a special program for those who need constant assistance. For example, with talking. What are you doing here . What are we doing here . We are making sure the neighborhood stays clean. We walk around the buildings in the morning, pick up wastepaper, and clean up the place. Picking up garbage may not seem like the most glamorous job in the world, but he enjoys it, especially when local residents take notice of his work. It is important for our workers because they like being outside, and it is important to them to be outside in order to be a bit more present in society. There are almost 8 million severely disabled people in germany. Nearly half of them are of working age. In the last 10 years, the number of disabled employees in germany has risen by 1 3, but most of these people are still separated from society. Inclusion will only be possible when government and industry start taking these people seriously. I think you have to start by taking disabled people a little more seriously. Lets take a concrete example why does a company have to drive the orders to us in the workshop, then we work on those orders, and then they send a truck to pick them up and drive them back to the company . Why cant i, as group leader, go directly to the company with my group and work directly from their . From my point of view, that would be the best way. Cleaning streets or making souvenirs from wood, the ultimate goal of the program is to give disabled people a proper paying job. The chances are not high, though. Only one or two per year the leap to an actual company. Brent for more, im joined by a local politician and activist, constantin grosch. Are people with disabilities seen primarily as people with disabilities and not as citizens, students, artists, carpenters . I guess so, yes, particularly in the media. We only show disabled people in public when it is about disabled policies about disability. We do not show them in other contexts like entertainment or sports, so i think we have difficulty in germany and overall in the world to show disabled people as normal people who have a normal job and normal life. Brent what about the way we describe people with disabilities . We say, for example we dont say someone is blind. We say maybe they have vision disabilities. How important is the language for improving inclusion, or does it actually worked to hinder more inclusion . Brent i think words describe our reality, so it is very important to use words correctly, and if i look in the actual situation in germany, we have a big problem, that we miss what disabled people really need because we describe them wrong. We describe that the problem is the body of the disabled. We have a perspective that is really medicine type or into the biology situation of a body, but we have to see disabled people in society. We have to see who is responsible for problems that hinder disabled people in society. Brent in a recent interview, you said that there are no Television News anchors with visible handicaps. Why do you think that is the case . I think we have a structural problem. On the one side, problems in the education area that disabled people cannot qualify and serve for these type of jobs. On the others, i think we have problems with the perspective of disabled people. We dont think they have the skills, maybe normal society do not want to see them on television, and i think that is wrong. We have to show them a picture of disabled people, that it is normal to have a disability. It is mainstream and that we can see that everywhere. Brent constantin grosch, we appreciate your insight. Baseball is americas game, but it is also loved in other countries such as venezuela, but u. S. Sanctions against the venezuelan government well, they have struck out for the sport they are tonight, reuters is reporting that the u. S. Has created a sanctioned exemption for venezuelas baseball league. The reprieve could not come at a better time because venezuela usually sees an influx in major league a small talent in the u. S. Heading south during the cold offseason in the u. S. A night at a baseball stadium a classic pastime for many venezuelans, but their National League had been under threat. In august, sanctions imposed by the Trump White House block u. S. Players from signing for venezuelan teams during the offseason. The decision led to dwindling support and a dip in the league s quality since it resumed in november. The level of play has gone down, and attendance at the stadium has also gone down quite a lot. But it is still an activity that the public enjoys. The environment is still good. Its nice to come and have a good time. For many mlb stars, the Venezuelan League offered a solution during the offseason, a competitive environment, and a chance to stay in shape. I always heard about the Venezuelan League. I always wanted to come down here and experience it. I know the situation is pretty tough here, but, i mean, im here to play baseball. I want to play baseball. I wanted to come down here and play baseball. I know venezuela has a lot of great players, and i wanted to come down here and show that i can play with them. The organization does have a lot of great players, and some off and head north for stardom. With this exemption, fans of players from both nations should once again be able to be rid of popolitical borders and observe the sport they love.
