A climber was killed yesterday after falling hundreds of feet down mt. Hood. The rescue effort to save six others stranded with rocks and ice falling around them stretched well into the night. Two groups of climbers were stuck in the hogsback area. It took more than two hours to bring them back to safety. Thats where jamie yuccas is. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Its these snowy and wet conditions overnight that have rescuers racing to gem the climbers off the mountain. Yesterday was unseasonably warm and rescuers say its that melt and thaw that can make climbing especially dangerous. This was the scene after one identified climber slid some 700 feet down the face of mt. Hood tuesday morning. Ice or snow broke loose from under his feet and he started to fall. Reporter he was able to use his axe to slow his fall for about 100 feet. And after that he fell another 500 or 600 feet. Reporter he was airlifted to a helicopter medevac to a center where he was pronounced dead. A crew of at least 40 assisted in the rescuest. One said with the falling rock and ice, it felt like being in a bowling alley. The conditions up there are bad for hikers, climbers, and, quite frankly, for the rescuers as well. Reporter it took eight hours to bring two other men and a group to safety. The fourth other was rescued by sled. She suffered no physical injury but was too distraught to climb down unassisted. She was able to later walk off this rescue vehicle on her own. You say this woman was shaken up. Yeah. From what i understand, this was her climbing mentor and a very, very personal situation for her. Reporter another group of three hikers also had to be rescued. They all made it to safety and none of them had serious injuries. The oregon newspaper said 10,000 hikers go up mt. Hood. 100 people have died. Just since 2017, four people have died. Gayle . Does it pass the smell test that a deputy chief of staff wouldnt know about these problems . Its not possible to me. I think Sarah Sanders is relying on theres this career staff in the white house that determines the security clearances but the career people, they report to political people. So in that case that office is overseen by the deputy senior staff who sits noekt john kelex kelly and they would have alerted staff there were problems in the investigation. By the way, when the fbi completed it in july and the white house asked additional questions, the white house would not have gone back to the fbi to ask additional question without clearance from the white house. In other words, if it has nod risen to something higher. Thats right. The fbi didnt say they completed it without running to ground the Domestic Abuse allegations. That was resolved in july. Whatever they asked between july and november, fine, but those Domestic Abuse allegations were completed and looked into to the satisfaction by the fbi in july. Whats the big question do you ask . You want to know how many outstanding clearances are there. In fairness, i will tell you this administration brought in more people who had never served in government and those take longer.
