Airport as well. So no one will go basically an affect. If you can stay at home in pajamas and slippers. That sounds delightful. Yeah. My goodness, it is so cold outside. Dealing with snow that is one thing. Looking at snowfall totals so far we are up to 5 inches at stockily delaware and far cry from the end of this storm system just yet. We have had to up our expectations we will have more on that throughout the course of the morning but easily picking up multiple inches, milton, eldora, new jersey has just shy of 3 inches so far. When lou at rehoboth you are starting to get offfully close to white out conditions here pretty tough to make out the foreground sand and down there outside boardwalk plaza. That is plenty of snow starting to pile up in this area alone and every where else you see those darker shade of purple banding. Parts of atlantic county, Cape May County stuck as is southern and southeastern most burlington, ocean county that will potentially overtake the road quicker then what any plows could do. So as the morning goes on this will only get wheres before it can get better. So that is our local area. Looking at this at wide zoom we are still waiting for this to jet off to the northeast and leave as you loan and rotate away and that will take sometime because it is a large system even though it is moving long it is so bigot will need time to make its full tea part tour. Go by these numbers, folks. Our temperatures are technically in the 20s. Cold enough for snow obviously but factor in the wind chill. Wind is whipping. We could have gusts as high as 40 miles an hour, locally higher then that in the blizzard warned areas. With the snow still out there whether it is falling or not it will blow, drift around meisha and that is a major visibility issue for travelers not only are we talking about visibility, snow, ice, katie but when you couple that with these vehicles piling up on the roadways we can have many problem areas even if it is not bumper to bum perfect crash we will have spin out and that will cause you to slam on your brakes. We are seeing this all morning long we have been watching it since 4 00 a. M. We have a jackknife tractor trail are here, we have injuries here 95 south at 420, reports are it is hopefully starting to remedy and clear out of the way, two lanes were block, hopefully down to just one being block right now either way traveling by take it easy. Another jackknife tractor trailer here that caught on fire 295 southbound is still closed pennsylvania route 48, use new jersey turnpike or route 130, that is your best bet. Another accident here in Plymouth Meeting township line road closed at butt her pike you have to use stenton avenue that is your best alternate there. Also another accident here in media, this is where a vehicle went in the ditch. We have injuries here as well route one media bypass south bun at state road. All these areas we are talking about you will want to take it particularly slow. We are talking about speed restrictions out there. We will get more detail in the next ten minutes. Back over to you. Thanks, meisha. We are in the middle of the first major winter storm of the year. I have been out here for several hours as you know. I dont know if you can see down the Atlantic City boardwalk here. Win is willing in so many different directions. You can barely see a thing. Very telling on the boardwalk because there is so many lights and just up and down the boardwalk as well as ferris wheel but you can barely see them in these conditions. You can see, snowplow just pulled up, on to the boardwalk these guys have been going up and down the boardwalk all morning licensing and they just cannot keep up, with the amount of snow that continued to fall. They are actuallily but is there just so much that it just accumulating and you can see it here, looking down on the boardwalk you can see this layer of snow that is just forming on here. Very difficult conditions. You can really clearly see blizzard warning, there goes a plow again because of this Atlantic City schools are closed so hopefully people will stay inside and get out of this because it will get worse. War life from the boardwalk im trang do for cbs3 Eyewitness News, back to you we know this is not your first time at rodeo and you prefer to be by a star bucks out there. I dont think there is any star bucks out there not on the boardwalk. Reporter girl friend, girlfriend is there nothing but me but scott my photographer and the plow guys there was a couple out here earlier but they left, they went inside. Cape may lewis ferry suspended operations to day, ferry has been contending with ice build up in the canal and delaware bay and that isis one factor. Another factor is high wind expected to accompany the storm today. People in delaware are also waking up to some snow today. Eyewitness News Reporter chantee lans is live, and what are conditions like right now. Rahel and jan i was mentioning to you my goggles. You see the blacktop but it is very slick so give yourself plenty of time, take it easy, back here at the gas station some drivers that i actually spoke with were saying how it is in the so bad but one in particular i will let you listen to say they dent want anything to do with it. Not snow blower but leaf blower just to do the sidewalk it is in the bad. It is not a huge challenge. You can walk through it. It is not too rough. Little slick places but in the too bad just yet. Reporter again as you are out here during these conditions take it easy on the road just keep in mind the conditions, the top may be clear but it is very slick. That is very latest live from new castle delaware chantee lans for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Thanks, chantee. Snowy conditions forced officials to shut down airports in savanna and Charleston South Carolina schools were cancelled there because of the snow just months after they were closed by threat of hurricanes and it is not too often you see Something Like this, right a palm tree swaying in the snow storm. Oxymoron there. Heres a pennsylvania man s creative solution to clear his snow covered driveway, jonathan chill of Franklin County giant cardboard tv box to his lawn more to create a snowplow, his fiance caught it on camera during a snow storm last week and heres hoping he still has it ready to go because he will likely need it, again today. Yes. Cbs3 and katies house, station. Yes. Hey, necessity is indeed the mother of invention, you know. Yes. We have not created anything and we have had a lot of need, katie. This storm system is throwing us a curve ball. We knew the whole time it would be a major storm system but it decided it will shift its track at last minute here. So that is why snow fall total s have to get, taken up a pretty big move here so basically doubling expectation for snowfall totals but heres the storm, very well define, very powerful, very windy as well. We have these darker shade of purple that are indicating we have jer snow. Focus down by the shore trang do is in Atlantic City where heavier banding is coming in. How much . This precipitation rate would translate to about an inch, give or take of snow, per hour so if you are stuck in that band you are getting hit hard and accumulate varying quickly on that very, very cold ground heres current snow fall map. We may exceed 10inch mark in some spots within six to 10 inch rain. Six to ten call, along i95 winter storm warnings posted and winter wetsed vicary in that one to 3inch zone and that is upper end for you, you just are within the credits hairs of the war of this. We have to get to the shore looking for war of the conditions. 24 degrees at the airport. When you factor in the north win at 17 miles an her. That is harsh. It feels more like down in the teens right now at the airport , and war and Single Digits in spots too. Now this is where we will eventually end up, it will only get colder and feel worse come 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow, it feels like it is 12 if not 18 to 20 below zero and that is something that does not ease up, noon time same deal moving forward to 9 00 p. M. , same deal and that keeps going through majority of saturday. It finally will ease up come sunday, however this is really harsh cold. There is an end in sight. We will crack freezing mark on monday, meisha, problem is we could see a wintry mix by then three word you just said i do not like and in sight, yes, so right now we need to affect us on this morning commute. It has been very busy. I will add some parts very dangerous as well. We have an accident here 309 southbound at butler pike. It has moved off to the shoulder, coming around these accident spots just take it very easy. We are dealing with completely black ice, very slippery conditions out there indeed. On 309 we are looking okay and everyone taking it easy. We are looking at a jackknife tractor trailer on i95 south at 420 that has been since cleared. We have a jackknife tractor trail their caught fire here that still has 295 south closed past route 48, new jersey turnpike or route 130 is your best bet. That jackknife tractor trailer also caught on fire. Another accident here township line road closed at butler pike. Your alternate stenton avenue is your best bet, theme all morning long and because of that lets get an update on new jersey dots efforts to keep up with this storm. So, dan is on the phone, good morning. Good morning, meisha. Im curious to know because we knew this was coming but we didnt necessity how would it roll out what were you doing to prepare for this last night and again all morning this morning so far. Well, what we did is we just had over spreaders and plows, preparing for this event. We were closely monitoring things, the change in the weather, just what the track was, something that we try to keep abreast of, we know that conditions can change at any moment we had an average of 1500 spreaders and plows that were put on alert now and they are out there and work to go keep the interstate and state highways clear in south, Central New Jersey along the shore where a lot more accumulation has begun. As you mentioned we are just advising drivers to slow down give our crews plenty of room to work and use caution on the road because conditions can change quickly. No doubt, dan, thanks very much for keeping us safe. Thanks for your hard work, we will talk to you later. Jan, back over to you. Meisha, thank you. We have been checking conditions down the shore, right now we want to head north to monmouth county. Janel is live in neptune where a blizzard warning is in effect, good morning. Reporter good morning jan, rahel, good to see you this morning. We are taking a pounding here in neptune township. Lets show you. We have some plows out here we have on route 36, and the wind is really the big factor. You can see about five or six plowness a row have been making their way up and down this main they are fair trying to keep it clean but trouble is as soon as they clear it the snow just keeps coming down and the wind is helping it pile up even faster. We have made our way from manhattan here to machine mouth county earlier this morning on the garden state parkway near white out conditions, that is how intense it has been. We are start to go see more traffic as people who have to get to work, start to make their way out here, this morning, but as you have been describing it is a day where the road are very slick. If you dont have to be outside it is a day where it is best that you stay indoors. For new back to you jan and rahel. Janel thank you from trang do in Atlantic City, to the north coast. Dont go anywhere, we will be right back. Bundle up, stay off the road if you can. We will be right back with more snow coverage of the 2018 this is three Million Dollar mega multiplier the new gameul . From the Pennsylvania Lottery with top prizes of three Million Dollars three Million Dollars did you win . I dont know. Im so excited about it. This could be a big winner just had to share. Carry on. Sometimes the moments before you scratch are as exciting as the moments you do. Keep on scratchin getting closer to a upcoming weekend that is frigid outside. That storm system is gone by the time we hit weekend certainly but we will be dealing with highs at best in the teens and lower 20s and wont feel much better than zero through entire day saturday. So very harsh cold, and, this storm obviously rahel is leaving behind quite the legacy. All right, katie, thank you. Now for newspaper headlines in the region. Mercury pottstown Fire Fighters battled flames, frostbite putting out a house fire on east eighth street, fire started in the basement there and quickly spread to the first floor ongoing Home Renovations and cold weather proved to be a challenge for Fire Fighters, fortunately in one was hurt. Delaware county daily Time State Department shuts down and and, seeing the demanding all problems, work can resume. And in the trentonian new jersey governor elect phil murphy labels new Jersey Transit a national disgrace. Transportation experts say that many of the problems including a poor Safety Record , reliability issues stem from the lack of funding. Fixing system will be murphys top priority when he takes over in two weeks. That is newspaper headlines from around the Delaware Valley. Coming up next on Eyewitness News our cbs3 weather coverage continues. We will look across the area, trang do. Reporter conditions only getting worse at new jersey shore under this blizzard warning im trang do live on the Atlantic City boardwalk with what we are dealing with, pat. Im pat gallen outside art museum i have become one of those report hours takes the win to the face, windy, snowing, frigid, and brutal, that means i need Meisha Johnson to come save me. I got you, pat, im coming but first lets look at garden state parkway first snow storm of the new year has us packing our patients for a slow dangerous morning commute, very slippery conditions with multiple accidents and speed restrictionness play. We will have those updates, but first we will take a break , stay where you are, im jan carabao in for jim donovan. Im rahel solomon. It is 6 30. Heres what you need to know january 4th, 2018 in your morning minute. Right now snow is definitely on you can see why we are under a blizzard warning. I will show you the accumulation maybe one or 2 inches. We are along a snow emergency route, we have not seen any tow trucks out here just yet but hi, tommy, thank you. Tommy g just paving a way for me. You didnt even have a Winter Weather advisory in philadelphia yesterday and now upgraded to a winter storm warning. When the exhaust melts that snow or ice on the roadways it will refreeze, giving us lots of black ice. Dozens of white at Philadelphia International where flights were cancelled. Philadelphia Fire Fighters are battling a two alarm house fire in the queen village. Bumbo genesis. Bumbo genesis. Bomb bow genesis. Storms, that is bombing out which means that the pressure is rapidly decreasing , that means the storm is rapidly strengthening bomb cyclone was trending on twitter yesterday ahead of the storm. It sound so apocalyptic but it is in science. It is a phrase we use, the term came about from a paper that was written by a meteorologist who coined the term years ago. It has been in our vernacular for a long time but it is like polar vortex it effects millions of people and now what is this. Yes. Like it never happened before. It is interesting. We all learn something new every day. New we know what a bomb cyclone is, fun stuff, right. Lets get out to winter alerts, we showed you a moment ago in the morning minute. Things have shifted. If thinks your first time checking in since this same time yesterday the wild card has been thrown out on the table where we knew this storm would be huge, and very strong , but now it is shifting west and that is the key, the track was everything as to what we find with this storm. Blizzard warning in effect right now, that is, that is down along the shoreline and then winter storm warning further inland including philadelphia. Heres the storm one more time , isnt that a beautiful looking storm. Just kind of problems that this bring to you in the way of intense snow with down near the shore points as much as an inch per hour under those heavier bans of snow and then travel issues. Other thing aside from the snow is wind. Certainly the cold. But wind will impact us in many different ways because it bless and drifts the snow around that is already out there, meaning that the crews might have to go back out and replow same spots all over again south ande and gets drifted in the roadway but also the wind chill that come with it. It feels in better than 13, so lucky spot up in allentown where it feels like in the teens there and even at Philadelphia International. Nothing better than ten for wind chill currently, meisha. We will talk about how much snow has fallen and how much to expect beyond this point. Speaking of the airport they are saying over a hundred cancellations, so check those schedules on line this is just so bad, this is where a truck hit a deer 422 westbound before route 429. Very hard to slow down and suddenly stop especially for a deer. So for those who have to put on your brakes whether to dodge a dear door or other vehicles pump those brakes dont slam on the brakes or you will go perfectly straight 422 westbound before route 29. We have an accident here 42 south at route 55 blocking Left Shoulder that has been since cleared. You can see what 42 north bound looks like approaching 295, lots of vehicles, people having to go to work and drivein this. Jackknife tractor trailer that caught on fire here 295 southbound was closed now just right lane passed through 48, now back over to you. Stay home if you can this powerful noreaster is bringing heavy snow and wicked wind. Trang do drew short straw live in Atlantic City where blizzard warning is in effect. I have been where you are, i know how it is, how sit feeling. Reporter it feels awful, rahel i can barely see my photographer scott 2 feet in front of me. Do you hear this . My frozen hair, okay. Elsa is out here causing destruction, take a look here white out conditions here on the Atlantic City boardwalk, all of this swirling snow, you cannot even see right in front of you. It is just crazy, you guys. You can see on the boardwalk there are lights, lighted signs, you can barely see them under the particular conditions. The crazy thing is there is a number of people Walking Around here. They say you know what else is there to do but to go to the casino during these kinds of conditions. But speaking of, we were driving down here and i want to give you a look at the road conditions. This is the Atlantic City expressway, very slushy despite crews clearing these road. Here at the shore things are accumulating so fast they just cannot keep up. It is only getting worse. We saw a number of cars get stuck, just driving through regular streets. We caught up with people out working just like us these guys were cleaning up the sidewalks and stairs outside one of the casinos, lets listen. The wind speed, coldness, it is sticking bad as you can see. Tearing us up out here. I can confirm it is tearing us up out here. Because of that, Atlantic City schools are closed because there is in point in being out here if you dont to have. For now live from the boardwalk im trang do for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Now back to you. Thanks, trang do for bringing us those pictures so folks can stay inside and appreciate it. Also our own chantee lans live in New Castle County where scene is not as bad but wind are whipping. We can see it in your picture chantee how is it looking now. That is exactly why im so far away i wanted to show you visibility very low, and it is very, very cold. The snow is on my skin here my face that i have showing. We are here at wawa at gas station. People are here out and about bumping up hitting the roads. The road are much busier. Kyle will come around to show us what the roadways are looking like when he gets a chance. This is route 13 here. Most of the pavement is down to block but that does not mean you are out of the clear. It is slick. Be very careful out this way in new cation will delaware near wilmington line. I spoke with drivers. Solve them are not feeling it. What do you think of the snow. I dont like it. Reporter tell me why not. I just dont like driving in it, working in it, i just dont like it, period. I love snow but i just dont like to be tonight. I like to look at it from inside my home. Reporter you know what im kind of with them but thinks light compared to boston so im happy to be here and happy to be in the middle of this and not 8 feet or blizzard conditions so we will be out here monitoring the situation. Im having fun out here but it is serious rot roads so just take the road carefully. Very latest live from new castle delaware chantee lans for cbs3 Eyewitness News. Could be in boston. They are looking at a huge storm, thanks. Lets get tout pat gallen live outside the art museum. Earlier got a work out in and he is still working out on the rocky steps. We also brought this because we fully expect to see some snow and it is beginning to accumulate here in fairmount that i would bring the old sled out. Finish it off, the right way, so this morning we have been in south philadelphia, center city and now fairmount, conditions are getting worse, so that can only mean one thing. Never seen snow, first time reporter in orlando schools are handing out donated Winter Clothes to students, many of whom dont have any because they never needed any. We are getting requests from the schools Guidance Counselors and principals, child name, size, gender. Reporter south caroline ace known for lush, plentiful golf course is and golf cart can be repurposessed for snow borders. On the highways there driving is treacherous, cars litter the side of the road. This is a white out in savanna, georgia. I have to chip ice off my car, i dont know how to drive , on the road, like this, in this type of weather. Reporter here, in insuring we are expecting half foot of snow, big apple officials are among those along the seaboard warning residents of the extreme cold temperatures expected behind the storm, most dangerous conditions may actually come after the snowfall. New England States could see a foot, cities there, in wooster massachusetts are urging locals to stay off the icy roads most of today and tomorrow. It will be quiet, after plowing, sanding the entire city. 500 miles of streets. Reporter heavy wind means potential for widespread, power outages. Hena doba for cbs3 Eyewitness News. We have Team Weather Coverage of the winter storm this morning. Katies been tracking timing of the snowfall but lets start with matt, you are looking at what weather watchers are reporting. They are seeing plenty of snow in the philadelphia area philadelphia itself has not seen thick of the snow that is where trang do is in Atlantic City across new jersey shore points but our weather watchers are still reporting, snow here on this thursday morning. Fran in nottingham is up to threequarters of an inch of snow now some folks like john, in tabernacle around a tenth of an inch. Inch of snow for phil, over by chestnut hill. Half inch for john in perkasie i will get down to the bottom of the list because here are higher amounts lynn in cherry hill has an inch of snow, over an inch for marshall ton, delaware and dineen in west chester she is our winner so far this morning. She has got 2 inches of snow. That is what we have weather watcher wise. Across the area those are lower amounts. Heres what we have highest amounts south new jersey and in southern delaware as well, stockily delaware in sus sixth county six and a half inches of snow, maybe more than that at this point that report is just about maybe 45 minutes or so ago. Egg harbor township up to 6 inches of snow, wildwood at six and just outside Atlantic City area eldora, 4. 5. It is starting to pile up and it might still get worse before it gets better. Yes, the current picture on storm scan is showing where heavier bands are coming in and especially down near southern new jersey and parts of the southern delaware. You lighten up on those snowfall rates and totals, as you head a lot further inland but yesterday it looks like some counties might still get gipped by this snow and that is not the case. We are all going to get something out of it but it is a much bigger anti, in a big way further you get to the coastline. Heres the storm, core of circulation us off Virginia North carolina coastline. That will rotate to the northeast so we will keep being on the Northwest Side of the storm system strictly snow and then cold enough to produce plenty more of it. This is model interpretation of what we will see on top of the snowfall totals that we will see. We could still see if this model is correct up to another 9 inches in Atlantic City or wildwood. That will take you pennsylvania, a foot worth of snow here but we are still expecting on the order of three to have inches around philadelphia. These are additional totals on top of what we have seen. Looking at future weather and timing things out by seven or 8 00 a. M. Is there a decent sharp cut off with the snow but decent band ago this will be coming in, in some parts of the south jersey, southern delaware and then slowly but surely movese. Philadelphia county could be done by one or 2 00 p. M. But should be long gone or snow is done by middle part of the p. M. Rush hour. Future win gust though dont go anywhere they stay both end through noon time in the height of the storm for our area we are going to be in the 50s in terms of the gusts and wouldnt be shocked to see that verify. As we move forward to noon time tomorrow and even into saturday you are not going to see these gusts ease up that much. So wind, cold are harsh reminders of the storm that will be long gone and you will to have deal with blowing, drifting snow for probably next couple days. Then that visibility, with that that is in the good either, thanks very much. We are looking outside, visibility, garden state parkway near cape may toll plaza this is what you are heading out into right now. Good news were not seeing a lot of people in their vehicles heading out in this treks or area which is very, very wise. If you can stay in you will want to if you have to head out there just take extra precaution for this morning. Accident here garden state parkway hopefully this is starting to get remedies, garden state parkway before North Wildwood that right lane is still compromised. Quick peak here 95 south at cottman, it is helping dissolve. You can see slick conditions on the roadway, you can see ice, snow and also see now typically right now approaching at 7 00 we would some bumper to bumper rush hour traffic starting to form. That is not what we are seeing people are staying off the roadway which is nice to see because vehicles that have been out there we have been seeing accident after dont after accident. This is where we have had one where a truck hit a deer. Probably coupled not stop. 422 westbound, 295 south, pennsylvania route 48 block ago this right lane, jan, back over to you. Trouble on the road there and in the eras well as we have been telling you throughout the morning Philadelphia International airport is being impacted by todays storm. Lets check with the airport right now with diana jarvis from philly international is on the phone, good morning, diana, what is the situation right now. Well, obviously it is snowing right now at a pretty good clip down here. We are over 100 cancellations for today. You could maybe perhaps this total to climb a little bit more as the day progresses. The important thing we want to let people know is that if you are scheduled to fly today make sure you touch base with your carrier for flight status information, and if necessary to rebook. Airlines started canceling flight yesterday. That was a good thing in the sense that folks didnt end up showing up at the airport to find out that their flight has been cancelled. Airlines got out in front of this yesterday and again this will be a Long Duration event as you mentioned. This is a storm that is not only affecting philadelphia but it is impacting the entire east coast especially northeast u. S. Today, lot of problems.
