Now, many people i spoke with in the area tonight say they welcome this plan, but they also expressed some Public Safety concerns. Love our lake. Wants to remind oakland residents and visitors of lake merritts vibrancy and beauty this summer. Childrens fairyland executive director Kimberly Miller came up with the idea. I want children and families to feel really comfortable and excited to enjoy outdoor recreation, art and culture at our heart center at the lake. The initiative is a collaboration among lakeside institutions including the oakland museum, the oakland public library, and visit oakland. There will be pop up activities featuring free concerts, jogging and walking groups, and health and wellness classes. Were about positivity and working with our community, not just the organizations that surround the lake that really want to invite our oaklanders back down to the lake for fun and joy and vitality, but also our city officials. Oakland resident ross tucker has lived in the area for several years. I used to be a person that would come down to the lake all the time, you know . The vibe started changing. I quit coming down, but i think this is a good way to boost reverence of the old lake merritt. Before the pandemic. In fact, he was at the lake during the juneteenth shooting in 2021. That left a 22 yearold dead and six others wounded. That was on the other side of the lake and if yall youtube it, its a shooting that happened between two rival enemies, and half of us ran up, down, up. Mcarthur. It sounds like youre more guarded now. Youre more vigilant. Yes. My partner has suggested we come meet a friend of ours for just, you know, just to hang out at the lake. I was like, its about to get dark. Last year, lake merritt was the scene of a shocking discovery. A 23 year old mans body was found stuffed in a suitcase. Oakland Police Data Shows that Violent Crimes citywide are trending down this year, though the department is beginning to see an uptick in homicides. What is your sense of safety when youre here . I dont really think about it that much. Like theres so many people out walking around, i feel like its definitely safe for families. I think it has a bad rap. I do think its a lovely lake. It could definitely use some more lighting and i do not like going out after night. Not unless im accompanied by someone. Betty thank you for that. Staying in the east bay, a 13 year old boy has been accused of murder after a deadly stabbing in san leandro. The young suspect arrested at his middle school. New tonight ktvu is. Amber lee has the latest developments. Police say 18 year old zion gooden was stabbed and killed inside the Safeway Store on bancroft avenue in san leandro. Lieutenant abe tang tells me a 13 year old stabbed gooden in the arm and chest. April 2nd, around 515 in the afternoon. Definitely surprised, especially with the crime of this magnitude that the suspect is someone of such a young age. Its not something that you see every day, tang says. The incident started over the suspects interaction with goodens friend. The confrontation escalated into violence. Police say Surveillance Video and witnesses led them to the suspect. We were able to piece together what transpired during the altercation that led to the stabbing and homicide, and we were able to, from surveillance footage, eventually able to piece together the identity of the suspect that we were looking for. Police say they arrested the 13 year old last thursday at the middle school he attends in a neighboring city. Investigators say a search warrant served at the suspects home linked him to the crime. Police declined to release details as to what the argument was about between the suspect and gooden and goodens friend, police advises parents to talk to their children about how to resolve conflicts peacefully. There are better ways to settle your differences, that sometimes its better to take a deep breath and walk away. The 13 year old suspect is being held at Alameda County juvenile hall. He faces one count of murder in san leandro. Amber lee ktvu, fox two news an oakland man has been charged in connection with a large retail theft at a walgreens in San Francisco. Malaki ricard has pleaded not guilty to all charges of burglary, grand theft and organized retail petty theft. Authorities say ricard is part of a group that targeted the walgreens on castro street in noe valley last wednesday, and stole thousands of dollars of merchandise. Ricard has been released on his own recognizance. He is expected to appear in court again next week. Home depot has been fined more than 1. 3 million as part of an arson investigation into a massive fire. Dylan gogue was charged with arson for setting the san jose home depot on fire in april of 2022. His case is still pending. The Santa Clara CountyDistrict Attorneys Office now says the store has several fire Code Violations that hampered firefighters ability to save the building, including a water Sprinkler System that was not working. Firefighters were also blocked from the fire lane by improperly stacked pallets. San jose police say the man who fired at random in a neighborhood and then at police is a felon who was armed with an unregistered gun. Police say 41 year old Ricardo Villareal drove up to the k and k apartments in East San Jose around 4 00 yesterday afternoon. Officers say hes seen in the Security Camera video getting out of a minivan and for reasons still unknown, an opening fire indiscriminately. People in the apartment complex called police, and when officers arrived on scene, they say villareal shot at them. Thats a frequent occurrence. We often find felons in possession of firearms. That was the situation 17 days ago, and so thats part of what we were trying to figure out. Its part of what were trying to convene a group of people together to figure out why in san jose, we are seeing this uptick in violence directed gun violence directed at our police officers. Ive been doing this a very long time. Ive never seen us San Jose Police officers take so much gunfire in such a short period of time. Villareal was eventually cornered by three officers, and thats when he was shot. At last check, he is in Critical Condition now. Police said villareal was convicted for assault with a Deadly Weapon on an officer and was on probation. Detectives say this is the third time this year a San Jose Police officer has been shot at. The department is working with the Northern California bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms to track the origin of the gun that was used in yesterdays shooting. The man convicted of breaking into Nancy PelosisSan Francisco home and assaulting her husband with a hammer will be resentenced next week on friday, david depape was sentenced to 30 years in prison for that break in and attack. However, the federal judge presiding over the case says she made a clerical error by not giving depape a chance to speak in court during the proceedings. His sentence is not expected to change. Earlier today on the four, we spoke with legal analyst michael cardoza. He says if depape shows remorse, its possible the judge could knock off a few years. Whats he going to say . Thats a decision that the pope and his attorneys have to make, whether hes going to apologize. But if he apologizes for it, its going to be interesting to see what the judge does. Does she then reduce the 30 years by a couple . I think that would kick up a dust storm. A new sentencing date has been set for may 28th. Multiple city leaders here in the bay area are now in china. Antioch mayor Lamar Hernandez thorpe met with government and business officials. Hes going to be there for a week. This years trip is focusing on green developments and deepening international relationships. The antioch mayor joins the mayors of oakley, saratoga, east palo alto, morgan hill and san carlos, along with the founder and chairman of the china silicon valley, a nonprofit founded in 2012. The mission is to provide a range of services to the businesses that were impacted by the highway one collapse and closure that began in late march. A bill to legalize amsterdam style cannabis cafes in california has passed the state assembly. Right now, people can consume marijuana products on site in licensed lounges, but right now, dispensaries cant sell non cannabis related food and drink. Governor newsom vetoed a similar bill last year over concerns it would undermine the states smoke free workplace protections. As the author of the bill, assemblymember matt haney, says he modified the bill to address those concerns. Ktvu is Lamonica Peters spoke with Health Experts and violence advocates on the impacts. It could have. State Assembly Bill 3127, introduced by Assembly Member tina mckenna, says it aims to ensure that Domestic Violence survivors can Access Health care with limited, mandated reports to law enforcement. If charges are not pressed, then, the person can go back home and be at risk. Health care providers can also be at risk, potentially, if passed. California doctors will also be required to offer a referral to a local Domestic Violence program, you know, right now they have to report it, if you bring it up in the encounter. But if this bill passes, they dont have to report it to law enforcement, but they can still provide you with a lot of services, and advocates that can help you navigate this difficult situation. According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence, one of four women and one of seven men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Last week, a video surfaced showing music mogul Sean Diddy Combs attacking then girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a Hotel Hallway back in 2016. But i want to say the reason were still talking about this is because we have not come to terms with the fact that this is our brothers, our neighbors, our pastors, our, you know, the people that we grew up with that are actually perpetrating these crimes. Henderson is executive director of next door solutions, a Domestic ViolenceAdvocacy Agency in san jose. She says being discreet and having a plan before leaving an abusive relationship is vital to a persons survival. In the Domestic Violence world, one of the things we talk about is, is this a relationship thats safe to leave . Because for those of us not in an abusive relationship, it might be hard to end a relationship, but it is safe to leave. Ab 3127 will also require doctors not to report to police unless the patient asks them to do so. The bill has already passed in the assembly and is now in the senate. Police near las vegas are investigating what they believe was a murder suicide that left three people dead. This story begins tonights west coast rap. They were all found shot to death yesterday inside a home in henderson. Officers responded to the house because someone called, saying a friend shot his exgirlfriend and her estranged husband before shooting himself. Police have not released the identities of those involved, and in arizona, wildfire has burned more than 14,000 acres since it started on saturday. The wildcat fire is burning northeast of scottsdale near the Tonto National forest. 300 firefighters are working on this incident, and as of this morning, there was no containment. Tonight, no homes in danger. A spokesperson with the Tonto National forest says the fire is likely human caused, but it remains under investigation. A ucla rowing crew got quite a surprise when a seal, a sea lion pup, hopped into one of the rowers boats. Logan hibbard tells us that she and her teammates were practicing in Marina Del Rey when the sea lion jumped out of the water and right into her boat. Her teammates took these photos while she did her best to remain calm. Its a baby sea lion. So, he was really, really friendly. And. Yeah, i figured if i stayed calm, then it would make him more calm. And so we just sort of had an understanding with each other. I did try to pet it, and it didnt really like that, so. So i stopped. They called the Marine Mammal center in los angeles, who then sent a crew to take the sea lion in to study it, and experts say the sea lion was malnourished, which likely made it more willing to get so close to humans. Theres no fog at the coast and without fog things start off sunny throughout the bay area, but its a cooler air mass so temperatures, you know its like its not a when usually when you dont see fog this time of year, oftentimes you get sort of an off shore flow and youll see temperatures inland in the 90s. This is kind of a little different deal. Temperatures arent going to make it into the 90s inland. Theyre going to make it into the mid 80s, maybe even upper 80s way inland, like sacramento, fairfield. For us, its going to be all about 70s and low 80s. Winds have died down quite a bit. Theyre calm in the north bay. Sfo is always a good indicator ten miles an hour. So probably gusts to 15. But thats kind of a little wind tunnel there anyway. So no fog. You can kind of see it here. If you look you see that fog sort of not not able to form because High Pressure is not really that dominant right now in this zone. It will be as we go into wednesday and thursday and a little bit into friday, and then it weakens again. So tomorrow morning theres the fog down in monterey bay, some up around pigeon point and then again tomorrow night. And then wednesday morning. More fog. Thats kind of our opportunity. I think therell be fog filling in here as well. And then it goes away wednesday afternoon and thursday and then friday and then saturday and sunday. More of the same. So just sort of a really mild flat line pattern, which is great. I mean, the air quality is good with this pattern. The microclimates exist but theres not theyre not extreme right. Green 60s, 70s 80s. And there are some 90s showing up the reds, if you go, i mean, theres going to be very low 90s. But thats up in sacramento, stockton, probably modesto. So 86, in antioch tomorrow, 86 in concord, 82 in san jose. Nice looking day for you tomorrow and beyond. Just not all that warm. Look at that. Thursdays down to 80. The Transbay Joint Powers Authority is receiving 3. 4 billion from the federal Transit Administration in. The funding will be used to connect caltrain and ultimately, california highspeed rail to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco. Downtown cannot be a 9 to 5. It has to be offices, housing, and places for people to enjoy because it is a real neighborhood with a park right above our heads that we can enjoy on any given day. The best current estimates are that the below street level waiting and boarding levels should be in use by the year 2034. The high speed rail will take until 2044. The challenged Athletes Foundation hosted an adaptive golf clinic today in San Francisco. The event took place at the olympic club. About 28 golfers between 3 to 67 years old took part, all with varying backgrounds and physical disabilities. The clinic was open to anyone with a disability and a desire to play golf. Its a rare opportunity for folks that have some type of physical challenge. Could be somebody whos got cancer, could be an amputee, could be somebody who has spinal bifida, and they may not be able to walk. Organizers say the cost of Adaptive Sports equipment and specialized training is expensive and often not covered by insurance, making this clinic invaluable to athletes with disabilities. Now. We have an update now on the growing Peregrine Falcon chicks on the top of uc berkeleys campanile. Those chicks have started to explore the world outside the nest. Now the University Posted this video to x. It shows some of the chicks, well, just poking around and getting a feel for the area outside their home. Kind of getting big fast. Theyre growing so much that you can start to see their baby fur is starting to shed. University officials also say the campanile has some blind spots, so their cameras wont be able to see everything theyre doing at all times, but they also say they have volunteer camera operators who are working hard to keep a close eye on the chicks movements.
