Police say the cyclist was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Eastbound and westbound lanes on hamilton avenue have been closed off. Police are asking people to please avoid the area as the investigation continues. Our time is 404. Were waiting for authorities in the east bay to release the names in a suspected murder suicide. There were two separate crime scenes, one in pleasanton and a standoff in san leandro on interstate 580, the body been sl times was found in an apartment near Creekside Park in pleasanton. A black sedan seen leaving that shooting scene was tracked by the police. That car slammed into a median on the shoulder of westbound 580. Both directions of the freeway were shut down by the chp. The police were telling everybody up here, please move out the way a little bit just in case, because they were going to be letting off both shots and gas. Now the car was surrounded by Law Enforcement, but then the man inside the car shot and killed himself as the investigation continues, the police are trying to determine the relationship between the man in the car and the woman whose body was found in the apartment. Complex where the woman wasr in killed. That neighbor says she heard gunfire, then saw a man flee the scene. Now, this witness didnt want to be shown on camera as. I heard three loud shots and there was a pause for about 15 seconds and then two more, got up and kind of peeked out my front door and sawusomebody running to a car that was parked on the side of the fence, and the car drove off. It was very quick and very fast. Now other tenants at the apartment complex say theyre shocked by this shooting and said that area has always been quiet and safe. District attorney pamela price is questioning some of the financing of the recall campaign against her. People living in the East San Jose area told the board what this transit project means to them. Its going to help move of the commuy from East San Jose to core job centers and opportunities in the greater Silicon Valley area, which has you know, long been neglected and something that has been 24 years in the making. Another big retailer is leaving San Franciscos union square. The Global Fashion brand zara will close its location on post street in San Francisco. A spokesperson for the company says the lease for the building is due to expire in january, and the company wont be renewing it. Zara has another store at Emporium Center, which used to be known as westfield mall. Zara says that store will stay open and north face will also be closing its Union Square Location at the end of the month. The Outdoor Clothing company was started in San Francisco in the past several months, union square has seen closure announcements from several brands. The newly renamed Emporium Center Shopping Mall has also seen several vacancies. North face says it stores in santa clara, berkeley, walnut creek and palo alto will stay open in. It is 416. The historic castro theater in San Francisco finally moving ahead with renovation plans after years of debate about it. Ktvu is amber lee gives us a look inside the theater and has some of the details of the ongoing project. Its science, and its art. San franciscos historic castro theater is undergoing the first phase of restoration. The frame of the movie screen now exposed. There is scaffolding from floor to ceiling, blending the old with the revealing the stories that are trying to get out. Stories that jeff green, a restoration expert, will help reveal during the work. To preserve the art in the original architecture by timothy pflueger, who designed the up a scaffolding to get a close up look at the condition of the ceiling and walls. We cleaned this fellow today. The first phase involves assessing and peeling back the layers of dirt and nicotine from years of people smoking to show the original artwork, there are some surprises. Theres two huge dragons here. Theres ac circular dragons n every single one of these panels. An asian motif blended with cherubs. Green says that many items can be restored, but some features, such as tassels that are missing, will need toc be replicated, and all theuoriginal paint on the ceiling there. The final phase of the restoration will be the stage and putting in a new lift for the organn green says the magic of this theater. It will beunew and it will be a surprise, and it willube as it was originally. But preserve that sense of place that people identify with. Mary candy with another planet, the company which runs the theater for the family who owns it, is overseeing this project. She estimates the restorationc will cost more than 15 million. Green estimates that the restoration work up here, with theuceiling and the walls, will be done in six months. The goal is to have everything done and welcome the public back by summer of 2025. Mr. Speaker, the president of the United States, as President Joe Biden arrived for his third state ofuthe union address, democrats broke out in reelection chants. Biden came out swinging his reelection on the line, and he repeatedly sought to draw clear distinctions between himself and his presumptive challenger, never naming former President Donald Trump is a freedom of democracy, are under attack at both at home and overseas. The president started with a call for aid to ukraine, which has bipartisan support but has been rejected by some republicans. And trump, who has praised russian president putin in the past. My message to president putin , who ive known for a long time, is simple we will not walk away. I will not bow down. ubiden then appealed to moderate republicans who are concerned about trump reminding americans about the insurrection of january sixth. We all saw with our own eyes the insurrectionists were not patriots. Theyd come to stop the peaceful transfer of power. Biden then turned to reproductive rights and called for bipartisanship to protect ivf and access to abortion. Now, just before the president addressed the nation, protesters took to the capitol and demanded a cease fire in gaza. The protesters held banners as they condemned the president s handling of the conflict between israel and gaza and hamas, a pro Palestinian Protesters have been criticizing what they say is President Bidens inability to work out a cease fire. Congresswoman barbara lee says more should be spdone. I think he gave enough attention. I dont think he went far enough, but its unacceptable for the world, and i think he needs to use the leverage of the United States to, bring an end to this so tha a diplomatic path, a political path, can be put forth that ultimately would lead to a two state solution and for peace and security for the israelis and the palestinian people. The congresswoman lee also said there was a sense of optimism and enthusiasm among democrats in the chambers during the president s speech. Mayor london breed outlined her vision for the future of San Francisco in her latest state of the city address. Now, breed says she is determined to lead San Francisco out of its pandemic slump. The mayor vowed to fill the many now vacated Retail Stores in thet downtown area and provide more Affordable Housing across the city. Downtown cant just be about jobs. It cant just be the 9 to 5 financial districtn we also need more people to live and study there. So our new initiative, 30 by 30 30,000 more residents and students downtown by 2030. I just like making my Community Better and safer, so i just to put out some ideas out there that way i can have i can make sure and have my Community Safe now. Five more Community Forums are scheduled in san jose during the next two weeks. The San Jose City manager ultimately will appoint the next police chief to be confirmed by city council. The San Jose Police department wants to recruit more goal to have women make up onea third of the department by 2030. Officers say having more women on the police force can help improve their response and how officers serve their communities. We tend to talk our way out of situations rather than using force, we use our verbal skills, so thats incredibly important. That gives us an alternative to our current approach and will hopefully increase our and security. Or greater safety currently, 13 of the San Jose Police departments officers are women, which is about 140. The goal is to increase that number to 321. All right. Federaluinvestigators areutrying to figure out the wheel of a United Airlines plane fell off shortly after taking offufrom sfo. Ktvu Amanda Quintana liveuat the airport with reaction from passengers yeah, well, that 777 was taking off just around 1130 yesterday morning when that wheel fell off. It fell into an employee parking lot here at sfo. And all of that was actually caught on camera. Now, you could see the video that the wheel came off just seconds after that plane took off. A professional plane spotter was actually broadcasting live on his Youtube Channel when it happened, and he saw it all. He called it the craziest thing that hes seen. He saw the plane just keep flying. Passengers on board say that they were unaware of what happened until they saw the plane was dumping fuel. After flyinguin circles for a while. That flight was eventually rerouted to las. An says there wasnt a risk to passengers because the plane can land with aumissing wheel, but there are a lot of questions now that federal investigators will be asking, did that aircraft landing gear strut just come out of maintenance . Did they just install it . Was it its first flight . Could it be a metal fatigue type issue . Well, federal investigators e wheel of a commercial airplane fell off shortly after departing from sfo, the United Airlines jet was headed to asia ktvu Amanda Quintana live at the airportuwith reaction from passengers and amanda. Also, a look at this investigation into what happened. Yeah, well thats right. So the 777 was taking off yesterday morning around 1130. It was taking off for japan. And that is when that wheel came off. And this was actually all caught on camera. We do have video that we can show you. And in that video you can see just seconds after that plane takes off, the wheel comes off. Now a professional plane spotter was broadcasting live on his Youtube Channel, and thats who saw it happened. He says it was the craziest thing that hes seen. And he saw the were unaware of what happened until they saw the plane was dumping fuel. Aftercuflying in circles for a while, the flightc was rerouted to lax, but they say crew members and passengers were calm and theyufelt safe. I was never really like that. Worried like its a wheel, its not the end of the world. And i dont know, i had trust in the pilots. They they said traid for this. They knew what they were doing. So i kind of just put my trust in them and yeah, it worked out pretty welln an Aviation Industry safety expert we spoke to says there was not a risk to passengers because this planeucan still land with a missing or damaged wheel. Although she said losing a wheel is not a big deal in this case, it is of interest because federal investigators will be working to figure out why ituhappened. She says it could be metal fatigue that that piece had been in service for too long, and it was damaged somehow, or just human error. It just was not attached correctly. The good thing, though, is that nobody injured, although when that wheel fell, it did fall into an employee parking lot here and it did damage a few cars there, but nobody was in those cars at the time. Construction could begin thic summer to extend vta Light Rail Service from san jose to bart. The project extends light rail from the existing alum rock station to the east ridge transit center. Valley transportationc authoritys boad of directors approved the construction plan. People living in East San Jose told the board what this transit project means to them. Its going to help move people, move our members of the community from East San Jose to core job centers and opportunities in the greater Silicon Valley area, which has, you know, long been neglected and something that has been 24 years in the making. This is the first phase of this 15 million project tougive San Franciscos movie palace a whole new look. And ktvu got a look inside. You can see this is a top to bottom restoration here. Its one of San Franciscos most famous buildings, the castro theaters movie screen is now completely exposed and their scaffolding from floor to ceiling as crews peeled back layers of paint andy exposed original artwork, including several dragons. Those in charge of this restoration project say their main goal is to recapture the magic of this 100 year old Movie Theater. We want to preserve the sense of the place so that when people come back in, itll be new and itll be a surprise and itll be as it was originally. But preserve that sense of place that people identify with. Now, this restoration work will transform the old Movie Theater on multipurpose entertainment center, project organizers say many people in San Francisco and beyond feel the castro is much more than just a Movie Theater. We know that this is theumost important lgbtq Gathering Place in the country, if not the world, and we want that community to come here and feel like their palace has been restored. And work crews will eventually remove the theatersm with motorized platforms that will allow the theater to temporarily remove seats at any time, so there will be more room for concerts and other live events. The body of a woman whod been shot several times was found in an apartment near Creekside Park in pleasanton. Black sedan seen leaving that shooting scene was tracked by the police, and that car slammed into a median on the shoulder of westbound 580. Both directions of the freeway were shut down by the chp. The police were telling everybody up here, please move out the way a little bit just in case, because they were going to be letting off both shotsuand sw enforcement, but then the man in the car shot and killed himself. As the investigation goes on, the police want to know the connection between the man and the car and the woman whose body was found in the apartment. Now, we talked to a neighbor in pleasanton where the womans boy was found. That neighbor says man flee the scene. The witness didnt want to be shown on camera as she told us her story. Congresswoman lee alsoc said there was a sense of optimism and enthusiasm among democrats spin the chamber for the president s speech. Students and parents at Cupertino High School are demanding increased Safety Measures at a crosswalk near the school. Now, they tell us heret at ktvu that the intersection of finch avenue and calle de barcelona road located near the athletic fields of the school. Its a three way junction with no stop sign or traffic lights. One of the biggest problems with this intersection is that its not really built with the safety features. In mind. To accommodate that high volume of students that go across that crosswalk, 225 parents have signed a petition way stop sign. Other suggestions include reducing speed limits through the intersection, cupertino Safety Advocates say the city added more Safety Measures at other schools, such as monta school, that have similar three way junctions. The city is choosing not to put a stop sign, and they are choosing that they would rather not slow down cars for a few seconds to stop at the stop sign to let kids through, theyre prioritizing that over the safety of our kids. I can summarize it in, two words speak up. There needs to be a collective voice. There needs to be some kind of voice thats being brought to the city. Two students were hit by cars at the intersection last year. Students say the school added a crossing guard at the beginning of the school year they want moe protections. Time now. 63v two organizations that advocate for students who learn english as a second language say theyre against proposed legislation that changes how reading should be taught in california schools. Now, according to edsource, the California Association for bilingual education and californians together have both sent letters opposing the bill that require schools to use whats called the science of reading approach. The organizations believe that that approach would make it harder for students who are english language learners. Now, supporters of the bill say its designed to help all students. With just 43 of all california third graders reading and writing at grade leveluin 2023. No matter what their first language was on this International Womens day, we have the story of a young woman from oakland who started out on her High School Debate team and is now the executive director oe. Mia whitaker was a senior at Skyline High School when she took part in her first debate tournament in 2009.
