Okay, spnow to our election coverage d an update on yesterdays primary. One of the big takeaways in San Francisco. So, well, a potential shift in the politics in the city with voters embracing two Public Safety measures. We want to begin, though, with one of the measures that failed. That was propositionub. It would have set a minimum standard for police staffing. But as you can see here, 67 of the voters voted no on this proposition. Opponents criticized the idea primarily because it would result in the need for new taxes. However, voters did support measure e, it broadens Police Powers by allowing them to use drones and surveillance cameras. It also gives pursue suspects and vehicles. As you can see here in these latest results. This measure passed with more than 60 of the vote. And there was also strong support for another measure, measure f. It who receive Welfare Benefits in San Francisco to undergo drug screenings. Again, as you can see here, overwhelming approval of this measure with 63 support. So voters making it clear yesterdayuthat they want t crime, homelessness and drug use. Our christian captain talking with the San Francisco mayoral candidates about what these results show, and how the city might be leaning more moderate. With San Francisco voters approving proposition e, granting Police New Powers and proposition f tying drug screenings to public assistance, some are questioning if the city has shifted from its most progressive policies. Mayor london breed, who backed both measures, says their passage does not indicate that the city is straying from its progressive principles in its push for safety, San Francisco continues to push forward our values in extraordinary ways, and we have not abandoned those. But we also know need accountability. Supervisor asha sapphire, who is running for mayor, says the results show a city hungry for change. Voters want change. They want to see new leadership around all theudifferent issues San Francisco has faced. Thing people are concerned about Public Safety. Rightfully so. Theyre concerned about the homelessness crisis on the streets, the mental health, drug abuse. Mark farrell, the most recent candidate mayors race, also sees voters looking for change. Look, San Francisco needs to change directions. The last six years have literally seen our city crumble. We need to do an about face as a city. Incredible momentum. Last night, daniel lurie, also running forc mayor, says te policies that voters approved reflect a more nuanced snapshot of the citys electorate than simply looking at it as progressive or moderate for the electorate. The citizens and residents of San Francisco are absolutely, absolutely looking for change from the outside. And thats what we saw yesterday, and thats what theyre going to get in november. San Francisco State University Political science professor Jason Mcdaniel said, looking at the Election Results to gauge if voters have fundamentally shifted their positions is too simplistic, he said the results need to be looked at in context. I wouldnt say that progressivism is out, but i think the electorate has policies that progressive politicians and progressive organizations and leaders have been put forward. A grow sf had pushed for a lot of the ballot measures that won last night. That organization said being a progressive city and a well policed city arent at odds. Ofa said the measures that passed proposition e, in particular, weakened oversight and underminedureforms that were put in place to protect the public. Kafton ktvu fox two news. Now to more election coveragc , and were going to take a look now in the east bay at the november runoff for the congressional seat long held by barbara lee. Well the clear frontrunner, as you can see here in these results, Lateefah Simon , who lee endorsed coming in with more than 40 of the vote, Jennifer Tran and tony daysog are in a race for second. Again, the top two vote getters headed to that november general election. Now we head to the south bay and a really close race here to fill the seat of retiring congresswoman anna eshoo. Its not really close in terms of jose mayor sam liccardo. But take a look at these next two, the two coming in second and third evane just a couple thousand votes away from one another. And there are still a lot more ballots to be counted. Now to the biggest race of last night, and that would be the California Senate race. It was decided just over an hour after the polls closed, that democrat adam schiff and republican steve garvey will be facing off in that general election for the right to claim the seat long held by the late dianne feinstein. Garvey, aware of the many challenges that lie ahead. The last time a republican has been elected to the u. S. Senate from the state was way back in 1988, registered democrats outnumber republicans here 2 to 1, and schiff has a massive war chest. Hell continue to be asked if he supports donald trump, and for more specifics on his positions that in regards to garvey, hes going to have to find a place to do more than just slap aucoupleg one off the wall. Lets see if he can do that, because now its a different race. Essentially. Adam schiff could run steve garveys campaign in the top two primary system. Now steve garvey has to find his own voice. November, california will not have a female senator for the very First Time Since 1992.
