Looking for ahead of Opening Night against the phenix suns. Live from jack, london square, this is mornings on two. The knight. Well, today is tuesday, october 24th, and hes live across the bay area right now across the oakland estuary. You can see the fog. It is looking like it probably we usually look at this time of year and weve got cooler weather thats going to be moving in. Were going to check in with rosemary. Shes going to be here shortly to give us an update on that. All right. Meantime parents engaged in helicopter parenting more than they realize, and thats according to researchers from mott childrens hospital. Helicopter parenting refers to a parent style in which a parenting style in which parents do not allow their children to do much on their own. They found that 4 in 5 parents and children ages 9 to 11 believe its a good idea for their children to have free time without adult supervision, such as being home alone for the 30 minutes of the day to an hour. However, just three and five have allowed their children to do so. They found that the main reason behind this is because of safety issues, which is certainly certainly understandable. Welcome to the nine. I did not have helicopter parents per se, like they werent, you know, not in that way. Yeah, theyre very strict, but not helicopter parents. Right. So they like, you know, hell be fine at home alone for a little bit while we go do our walk home from school. These type of things. Store by yourself . I mean, you know, they wouldnt let us do anything crazy. They just normal stuff that you would do. Wed live three blocks from school, so we could walk, right . That type of thing. When were when were a little younger, but not, not what i see. Some parents do like constantly in their kids. I know, right . Stuff. I know. Its so hard. I love the idea of being i think they call it a free range parent where youre like, go outside and play. Come back when the streetlights come on. I mean, i talk that talk, but we are learning to walk that walk. The first time we left our boys at home, like we went to cvs, right . We were gone for maybe 20 minutes and they were so concerned. And, you know, what do we do if somebody knocks on the door . What do we do with the phone rings . And of course, i was like, what if the earthquake hits while were at cvs and like, for those 20 minutes that we were away, nothing happened, you know . So it was all in my mind. They were fine back in the day, you know, we didnt have cell phones, so our parents had to leave a leave numbers for like my grandmothers house or where they were going to be. And so that way we can call them if we need anything. Yeah, im with you, though. The first time we left our daughter, you know, was old enough for a 20 minute little. She had to know everything. Cell phone, you know what happens. And its like she wanted to know this. She wanted shes very cautious. And we were like, are you sure going to walgreens for that . 20 . You know, my wife and i were like, it was a test. But you know what it told me . I said, the fact that our boys were so concerned about us leaving them for 20 minutes tells me we need to leave them more often. Right. Because at the age that we finally left them. Yeah. I was like, oh, my gosh, at your age, i remember like, did your parents ever leave you in the car and run into the Grocery Store . 22 at the time . No, i was kidding. They were like, this was last week. No, im joking. But i remember my mom. Shed leave us in the car, shed run into luckys. And i dont think ive ever done that to my sons. Theyd probably never done that. Yeah. Look, my mom goes into the supermarket for sure. Im going for real quick, for five minutes, and shell be in for an hour. Im like, i stopped going inside. Ill wait in the car. Shes like, forget it all good, good, good, good. All right, lets focus on a story that really is unfolding in a dramatic fashion in the east bay. Its a harrowing idea of what investigators say happened aboard a jet that was heading to sfo recently that could have ended in disaster. Ctvs Amanda Quintana live in Pleasant Hill. This is where an off duty pilot, amanda, who lives in that city, is accused of trying to kill the engine of a plane midflight. Right yeah, thats right. Garcia so 44 year old Joseph Emerson, hes being held in oregon without bail. Hes going to be in court today. Expected in court at 2 00 today. Hes facing. 167 charges, 83 of those charges are related to attempted murder. There are other charges for reckless endangerment. Now, emerson is accused of trying to seize control of the engines midflight. He was seated in the flight deck jump seat and was off duty at the time. Alaska Airlines Says he tried to engage whats called the engine fire handle. This would turn on the planes Fire Suppression system and shut down the engines. The flight crew reported a credible Security Threat as they were on their way to sfo from everett, washington. And they had to land in portland in record from the cockpit. You could hear the captain report the issue to air Traffic Control and ask for police when they land and okay, ill just give you a heads up. Weve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. Um, and he doesnt sound like hes causing any issue in the back right now. I think hes subdued. Were told to emerson taught at concords Buchanan Field Airport and coaches his sons Baseball Team here in Pleasant Hill. We spoke to some of his neighbors about him and they describe him as a family man and say what theyre hearing in these reports is out of character for him. Some say they hope this was all a misunderstanding. And we visit with them every now and then. I see joe all the time. You know, working in the garage or doing something. I go and talk to him and he seems your typical normal guy when heard the news. Im like, what . You know, were still doubting. I mean, but is he the real guy. As for the 80 passengers, many of them were unaware of what was happening. One woman posting on ex saying a Flight Attendant came on the speaker to say they needed to make an emergency landing. And when they did, she saw Police Officers come onto the plane and take emerson off in handcuffs. She says at one point there was an announcement that there was a, quote, disturbance in the cockpit and a, quote, mental breakdown. She didnt really understand what had happened until she saw the news. Once she got off the plane, those passengers were able to get a later flight to get to sfo. Were told the fbi is in charge of this investigation and were waiting to find out something about a motive while weve been here, our crews were here yesterday. They havent seen any federal officers here at the home. And its been kind of quiet all morning. But we actually did just see this one car pull up. So it looks like somebody might be home. But we will continue to follow this story and update you when we get more today. Live in Pleasant Hill, Amanda Quintana, ktvu fox two news. Amanda thank you. And that is the despite the fact that the 16 year old boy who died did not go to their school. A lot of students were just like leaving around, like just during class. Im mad. How do you come pick up my kids today . Because they were scared. Was something going to happen . Probably not. But do we know . No, we dont know. This is a problem. There has been more cleaning and the streets have been more cleared up. I would say they make a larger effort for conventions. Recent years, the work of getting people into stable housing has been the cornerstone of one east Bay Organization thats marking 50 years of progress on the issue. This week, boss, which stands for building opportunities for self sufficiency, is being celebrated for all the good work its done in the community, we welcome to the nine the ceo of boss. Good morning to you, donald frazier. Good morning. Youve been there for ten years now. Yes and as we talk about whats happening in the community now versus ten years ago, what are the biggest changes that jump out to you . Well, i think the obviously the homeless crisis has grown. And i think that the government is responding to it in many different ways. One of the ways is coordinated entry, which has its own challenges, but i think the idea around building more housing and creating more access to housing is key. Do you see enough cranes doing work in places like oakland and around Alameda County . Well, ill tell you, we just broke ground on a 39 unit Affordable Housing property in berkeley. So and also with the city of oakland, we opened up 100 Community Cabins on wood street in addition to our safe parking on wood street as well. So there is some motion. Going forward. Also were partnering with elaine brown with oakland in the world. Shes building 79 units on seventh and campbell and oakland. And we were partnering with her to do the supportive services. So theres movement and like you said, supportive services. Its more than just housing because so many of the people who dont have stable housing also dont have Adequate Health care, a path to a decent job, a cell phone with which to line up a Job Interview can take us away from the very center. Okay. Lets say you have you have the apartment. Now what what else do people need . Yeah, well, the idea is to really stay with them until until they stabilize in the apartment and in the community that they live and connect them with, obviously, income obviously benefits and connected to Community Assets and just stay with them to make sure that theyre okay. And if they have a family as well, how does this connect to criminal Justice Reform . Well, ill tell you everything is connected. And so what we do, we develop solutions to mass homelessness, mass incarceration and Community Violence. And we have three shelters in Alameda County. Our geographical footprint is in berkeley, oakland, hayward and san leandro. And we have shelters in berkeley, oakland and hayward, actually a Safe Haven Program in oakland and two shelters again in hayward and oakland. Then we have our Community Cabins project. We have rv safe parking project, and then we have the developments that are coming on. As i mentioned before, step up housing in berkeley and then the black panther and seventh and campbell in partnership with oakland in the world. And then on our what we did Going Forward to address Community Violence and criminal justice, we created what were designing as a comprehensive, integrated multi disciplinary model where well have reentry employment, education, housing will have violence prevention and intervention, where we deal with community healing, we deal with gender based violence and gun and gang violence. And then well have our Behavioral Health services, the what we cap that off with. Were opening up a Trauma Recovery center in oakland, which is extremely wonderful. Right . And were really excited about it. Its the first Trauma Recovery center ran by a Community Based organization in the city of oakland. And were trying to get support for that as well. So would people come to that in a time of crisis or hopefully to prevent their involvement in a crisis . Well, the Trauma Recovery center is explicitly for survivors of crime. Okay. And so thats the purpose of it. As soon as i can come online. Well, were hoping to have it online by december. Okay. Okay i imagine you could use some funds. Were here to talk about that. But also, if people want to actively get involved to volunteer with boss, is that an opportunity . Oh, absolutely. Okay what can we do . Well you know, we could go to boss bay area and look at our website and look at the volunteer page, look at the donations page to donate finance financially or donate by volunteer ism. You can certainly you know, we do a lot of social justice work and we partner with californians for safety and justice from kind of educating and advocating our policymakers on some of the policies that negatively impact our the people we serve. And so, you know, we were looking for folks to help us out with that as well. Making change on the inside and outside. Again youve been there ten years, i assume youve seen Success Stories because of boss. Can you tell me really quickly about one of them . Oh absolutely. When i first came on, we, uh, you know, we have a homeless family shelter, and i came back to the team and said, you know, lets just imagine if you were a teenager and you were homeless and what would that feel like . And what that prompted was what we call our rising stars event it and what we do is we just honor the young people who are in our program. And we had one of our rising stars. I love talking about him. His name was kyle and kyle came in with his family and he wanted to go to brown university. I said, okay, thats ambitious. Yeah, lets do it. I said, what do you want to do . He wanted to be a pediatric surgeon. Okay . And lo and behold, kyle eventually went to brown. He graduated, he went to graduate school. Hes now in medical school. And he did. He did what he said he wanted to do. And so that was really amazing. And we have a lot of shining stars with our young folks who come through our shelters. But most times theyre invisible. And so we wanted to just shine a light on him and of course, theres many, many successes in our reentry programs and in our violence prevention programs, a lot of stories that are not really being told, well, i wish we had time for them all. I love hearing about kyle and i hope to hear more as we continue to follow his progress. Thank you so much for joining us. I mean, great job on 50 years, donald frazier. Thank you so much for being here with boss. Thank you. Wed like to mention if youd like to donate to boss, you can scan the qr code on your screen now or head to ktvu. Com givi day. Then you feel better all week . Yeah yeah, yeah. The house feels nicer. I totally agree. Yeah all right, so im not the only one. All right. Good to know. All right. Moving on to this story now, something weve been following for you happening today at 2 00, an Alaska Airlines pilot who lives in Pleasant Hill schedule to make his First Court Appearance in oregon on 83 counts of attempted murder. Authorities accused Joseph Emerson of trying to shut off the engines of an Alaska Airlines jet headed from, um, everett, washington to sfo. This past weekend. He was off duty at the time, sitting behind the pilot in the cockpit in the jump seat in. Investigators say emerson tried to deploy the engines Fire Suppression system, which would have shut down the engine, cutting off fuel and electricity. Okay. Just just give you a heads up. Weve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. Um, and he doesnt sound like hes causing any issue in the back right now. I think hes subdued. Well, the plane was diverted to portland where it landed safely. Its common practice for off duty pilots to sit in the jump seat to go back home after their work shift. Now, many of emersons neighbors in Pleasant Hill say theyre stunned to learn hes now accused of tampering with the jets controls, putting dozens of peoples lives in danger. They describe him as a family man who loves his wife and two children. You know, hes a very good dad as far as i could tell. Hes always playing with the kids, always doing things for them, taking them places. Every time we go to seattle, we were like, that could be our neighbor driving us, writing us. Theyre piloting us. Theyre but when heard the news, im like, what . Neighbors say that emersons taught flying lessons at concords. Buchanan field airport also coaches his sons Baseball Team in Pleasant Hill and was known for having Family Friendly backyard parties at new yorks jfk airport at jetblue, plane tilted back with the nose off the ground after landing. The airline says it was caused by a shift in weight and balance during deplaning the plane eventually shifted back to normal and no one was hurt. The aircraft is now out of service for inspection. Well, this morning, teamsters are expected to rally outside of crews headquarters in San Francisco. Right now, just last week, federal investigators say that they are looking into whether crews is doing enough to protect pedestrians. It comes in response to two reports from the company about pedestrians being injured, including one in which a human driver hit a pedestrian first, organizers of todays protest want the selfdriving car company to address those safety concerns. New this morning here, House Republicans have selected representative tom emmer for nominee to be their next house speaker. Emmer threw his name into the crowded field last weekend in a letter the minnesota congressman promised to always be honest and direct and never make a promise he cannot fulfill. He is the highest ranking candidate among nine others who filed to run by last weekends deadline. Naaimur will still have to be voted on by the entire house of representatives and receive a majority vote before becoming house speaker. The Golden State Warriors opener is tonight at chase center in San Francisco. The team is taking on the phenix suns. These games count now. And with us now to look at the season is Matt Steinmetz from 95. 7 the game matt good morning. You know chris paul is immediately grabs my attention i think that people who arent paying attention to the off season will now start paying attention. On to how steve kerr uses chris paul. Yeah yeah. I think its more important how do you feel about chris paul and how do warrior fans feel about chris paul . Is the adjustment period to him being acquired . Is that over for you, sal . Are you ready to embrace him . It is over for me. At first i thought that doesnt seem like a good fit to me, especially with all the history. But you know, after this off season, i got used to it. I saw him in a warriors uniform. Um, were all good. I mean, i think the warriors just want to win another ring. And if he can help up, then thats good, right . Yeah no doubt. Its not dissimilar for from when richard sherman, who was on the seahawks, joined the 49 ers. He was a villain with the seahawks, and then he came and helped the 49 ers win. And everybody forgot about it. So, you know, the one thing i think chris paul is really going to help the warriors with is, is their end of the game and execution and the thing he brings to the table is smarts. I mean, he is an incredibly intelligent player. He knows how to win. He takes care of the ball. He doesnt turn it over. And thats the one thing that i think is a big reason why they went to get chris paul. And thats because hes so shorthanded with the ball and last year the warriors turned it over a little bit too much. Yeah and they you know, they have a slightly new team kd is coming back into the house after i think this is the first time he plays at chase center since he was on the warriors. Is that all forgotten about too matt well, you know what its interesting, sal, because he was actually here. What feels like a long time ago now. He played at the chase center during the covid year, but there were no fans in the building at that point. So this is the first time durants coming back with fans in the building. I mean, look, id be shocked if he doesnt get a standing ovation from the warriors crowd. I really would be. I think he deserves it. I dont think theres any hard feelings about him after he left. I think hes made you know, i think hes still friends with a lot of the guys on the team. And i again, i would be very surprised if he does not get a standing ovation tonight when he gets introduced. Oh, does jordan poole get the same reception when he comes back . No, no, he wont. I dont believe so. I dont believe so. All right, look, the warriors, weve talked about this lots of times. The warriors window, if its not almost closed and its going to close soon, these guys are getting older, even though theyre superstars and they are past their prime. So do you think that they can still do it . And do you think that the younger players in the nba are going to start, you know, basically guarding these unguardable players . Yeah i think i think thats one thing thats really playing into a lot of the excitement. I feel like the warrior fans this year are very excited about this team. And i think part of the reason is because we all know that the end is closer than the beginning. And this thing could end at any time if the Golden State Warriors were to have a bad year, i would. Theyre going to have to start to think about transitioning perhaps off. You know, two of the three of their great players. Theyre an older team. Theyve got experience, but theyre really, really intelligent. If they can stay healthy, they definitely have a chance. The problem is going to be that the season in the nba is so long and theyre going to have to withstand their older players playing a lot of games without getting hurt. If they can do that, anythings possible. You mentioned something that piqued my curiosity there. What about load management . And that for people who dont know is when coach will sit a player out just to give them rest. Some say thats not actually good for the players because they dont get into condition to continue this long season. Do you think that steve kerr is on that bandwagon or is he going to play the whole thing full tilt . Well, interestingly, the nbas trying to address that issue, too, with some with some with a template or with some loose rules, if you will. Theyre still going to be a way to game the system, if you will. But theres really no doubt. I mean, steph curry, you know, its an 82 game season. Its unrealistic to think hes going to play 82 games or any of their their big four players, including chris paul. So its a matter of, you know, when a guy gets banged up a little bit, maybe thats the time you rest him for 2 or 3 games rather than just one game. But the nba season is just too long for players their age to play a full 82 games and then have to play ten weeks of playoff basketball. So that is a part of how the warriors season is going to go, how they manage their players minutes for sure. A new Climate Change study predicts an enormous environmental problem for a large part of the south pole in the coming years, scientists have concluded a huge chunk of ice in antarctica is certain to complete melt no matter how much the world cuts back on carbon emissions. Scientists stress that we should still have a worldwide focus on reducing greenhouse gases, but definitely dont want people to read this study and say, oh, there isnt any hope. We should just give up because of the west antarctic is not its not the whole world. There are so many other impacts of Climate Change that we probably still can avoid, even if this isnt isnt one of them Scientists Say it will take hundreds of years for the ice to fully melt, but its certain to have as devastating impact on coastal communities around the world later this century. California is giving 1 million to help pay for rebuilding two historic cottages on angel island. Those cottages were built by famed architect julia morgan, who was one of the states first female architects. There were originally 12 in all before they were destroyed by fire more than 50 years ago during a training exercise, hundreds of thousands of Asian Pacific island immigrants who crossed the Pacific Ocean were often detained at the angel island immigration station, which was known then as the ellis island of the west coast. Its so important to really preserve history, to understand that angel island has this historic significance, just as ellis island is part of our nations history. Angel island is. But really, that story hasnt been told. In fact, i didnt really learn about angel island until i went to uc berkeley. Its not taught in our history books from k through 12, but the hope is now that we have an ethnic studies requirement, now that people are learning more about asianamerican history, growing up in california, that many more students will learn about angel island, the two cottages are scheduled to be renovated by 2026. Calif state parks hopes the cottages will attract more visitors to learn about the history of angel island from angel island to alcatraz. For nearly 30 years, alcatraz operated as a prison in the middle of the San Francisco bay. It closed back in 1963 and ten years later became a National Park. Well, today, Alcatraz Island is marking its 50th anniversary as a National Park site. So joining us now is jolene babyak, who is an alcatraz historian and lived on alcatraz as a child. Jolene, good morning to you. Good morning. All right. So its not often you get to talk to someone who lived on alcatraz as a child. So i first want to know what your experience was like living on the island. You know, it was really a lot of fun to live here. There were about 60 families that lived on the island, about 75 children. We all went to school in San Francisco. We could bring our friends over here. And of course, when you were older and you had dates, you brought all your dates over. So it was really quite comfortable. All the prisoners were located on the opposite side of the island, and they tend to escape in that direction. They didnt come down to our area on escape. So we were paradoxically in living in a low crime neighborhood. Yeah, you had you had everyone there. But but you also had the security there as well for you, for your children at the time. So jolene, for the 50th anniversary, therell be a private tour to mark the occasion of Alcatraz Island. What does this private tour encompass here . Well well, its probably the standard tour here. Were having a media event right now so that we can introduce the media as well as the public to some of our facilities out here and our tours. But the standard tour is an an audio tour of the cell house, which is narrated by former officers and has excerpts from former prisoners, prisoners and residents. And then, of course, there are several special exhibits on the island and native american exhibit and also an exhibit on incarceration on. And so theres a lot of things to see and do in addition to a beautiful boat ride and a lovely view of the city. Yeah, thats one of the added bonuses, if you will, for that. I know when i went to alcatraz, i was surprised to see gardens there as well, because you go to see the prison cells, you go to take a tour that because that is the most famous part. But but i was i was shocked. I was walking there. Im like, what is this . Theyre roses and flowers. Can you tell me what that exactly is about . Well, that was mostly started by the military in the 1880s and 1890s because alcatraz is a rock and what isnt rock now is concrete. So it can be a very inhospitable place. And there were always women and children living here. So the idea was to make it a little softer around the edges. And then when the federal bureau of prisons came in, they just continued that. And there are a lot of plants that just grow here naturally. Theres agave and theres, you know, a yucca plants and all kinds of aeoniums. And now we have a long term set of gardeners, volunteers who come out to the island and kind of take care of it and weed around the plants and make it look beautiful. All yeah, its something. And of course, al capones roses. Oh, tell me about that. Tell me about al capones roses. I think thats more of a rumor than anything, but i think that there are some rose enthusiasts who have come out here over the years and found that there because of the isolation of the island, some roses have have evolved over the years to be very different. And i think the rumor in england for a while was that they were al capones rose roses. Interesting. Interesting i think it was true. All right. So in addition to, of course, the things that we know that we see here, what are some of the things that visitors might not often know about and think about when they have visited the island . Oh, my goodness. Theres so much most of the public do not understand. The difference between state and federal prisoners and state and federal crimes. They dont really have a history. They know about al capone. Maybe machine gun kelly, but they dont understand or know about the life of an average prisoner, how they came here, how they were treated and people are usually pretty surprised at how small the cells are, which today may be a two man cell in some prisons. Theres so much and i think this is an eye opener for many, many people. And julie, finally, for those who have visited the island already and say theyve already seen it, what reason would you give them to return again and take another tour . Oh i dont have to give them a reason. People often come out here for a second and third time and they tell me that im an author here. And. And im here three days a month now, and they tell me theyve been here before. Our kids are now studying alcatraz as a unit. Oftentimes times in their schools, sometimes as early as fourth and fifth grade. And so theyre thrilled to come out here. And everybody always tells me that when they come out a second time, they see things they never knew they didnt see before. And this is a great reason to take another trip out there for the for the 50th anniversary of alcatraz as a National Park here in the bay area. Julie babiak, thank you so much for joining us. A historian of alcatraz also lived there as a child, so im sure she has some Great Stories to tell as she shared some of them here with us today. Jolene, thank you so much for joining us this morning. Thank you. All right. Well, coming up on mornings on two, the nine, the United Auto Workers union has expanded its strike. The District Attorney of los angeles county, george gascon, is now investigating some recent hires by hotels. In response to the hotel worker strike. Hes looking into reports some hotels near the Los Angeles International airport and other areas are hiring homeless migrants to replace picketing employees. Gascon says the hotels may be violating californias wage and child labor laws by hiring these migrants who are desperate for work. It will be a fair and impartial investigation, but we want to make sure that those that are vulnerable are being provided the support that that the laws of this country provide. So far, the hotels have not publicly responded to these allegations. Hundreds of workers at Los Angeles Area hotels walked off the job in july in a labor dispute over pay and benefits. Here at the end of the night, we wanted to follow up on something we had yesterday for you. There was a study that showed most people are happy to pay more for pepsi or coke.
