Oakland police are investigating seven shootings this weekend, including three that were deadly. Among the victims was a teenager. Ktvu is rasmus joins us live from oakland with what weve learned so far about this latest violence and the plan for city leaders to talk about crime prevention. Just a short time ago, allen. Well sal, we are outside Oakland City Hall where just about a half hour from now, were expecting oakland mayor shengtao and other city leaders to talk about the kickoff to a festival thats happening later this week. The love life week. But on a more somber subject, were also hoping afterwards to speak with the mayor and other city leaders about the recent crime and violence the city of oaklands experienced over this weekend and what city leaders plan to do about it. Lets show you a map, because there were three people who were killed in separate shootings in oakland just since friday night. This is where the violence happened across the city. One of the incidents listed here was an assault. The other seven noted on this map were shootings. Seven people were hurt in the gunfire. Three people were killed, including an 18 year old woman. The Bay Area News Group reports the teenager and another 17 Year Old Girl were both shot on bancroft avenue around 1130 saturday night. The 18 year old was found dead at the scene. The 17 year old went to a nearby hospital. She was treated for gunshot injuries and is expected to recover. But several hours before that shooting on bancroft, there was a shooting in North Oakland near Martin Luther king boulevard and 42nd street. Police responded to a call about shots fired. There and found another person whod been killed. We unfortunately dont have any Additional Information on that victim, but coming up about 15 minutes from now, Oakland City Council member dan kalb, who is running for state senate, will be speaking with my colleague garcia on mornings on two of the nine, and theyll be talking about a Community Public safety meeting that is planned for this evening. Plans for that, by the way, were well underway before the weekend violence. But stay with mornings on two for more information on the details on that Public Meeting tonight. Live in oakland, ali rasmus, ktvu fox two news. Ali thank you. Today is the tax deadline for people in california who didnt file their returns back in april. The irs postponed the deadline for six months for people impacted by the heavy winter storms. The irs says that now is the time to file pay or arrange for payment if you cant afford your entire 2022 tax bill. Its just like it would be if youre in midapril, if you have a requirement to file a tax return and you have a balance due, you do want to file that return and pay something. If you cant full pay, lets work something out. Installment agreement. Short term, long term, that kind of a thing. But the bottom line is the penalties, if you will, and the interest that can accrue are much greater for a return thats not filed with a requirement to file a not full paid as opposed to filing the return and paying something. The irs is reminding california taxpayers they dont need to prove they were directly impacted by the severe Winter Weather to qualify for the extension and a tax filing extension is being offered by the irs to anyone affected by the war in israel and gaza. The irs says if because of the war, you cannot meet the deadline for paying your taxes or for filing your taxes, you can ask for an extension. Taxpayers who have a home or business in israel or gaza or the west bank now have until october of next year to file. 2022 taxes. All right. Time now for a check of your forecast. Lets go over to meteorologist Steve Paulsen right now for a look at the forecast. Steve, thank you, andre. Appreciate that. Well take a look at sundays high temps, which went up, up, up. It was warm, no doubt about it. The forecast projections had some 80s. And thats exactly what happened, especially livermore and morgan hill 86. So what we call the model output statistics was spot on once in a while and nails it and it did. San jose was 84. San rafael, concord, santa rosa, santa cruz, vallejo and hayward. I went with all 80 degree temps. Oakland, San Francisco were in the 70s a lot of other locations. Deep, deep system in the east and the southeast all the way down to the deep south. The reason, 39 Oklahoma City this morning, 39 in kansas city. As you watch Football Games over the weekend, you saw a lot of the cold, a lot of the rain. Well, whats interesting is this system, we may see something similar to it next tuesday, wednesday. So theres nothing locking in. Everything seems to be progressive. We have a weak system coming in. Its going to drag across us. Its a tenuous rope right now, but it might produce some very light rain up towards santa rosa. Minimal amounts. I should say. But you can see its lifting northward, but higher clouds will drift across. The main message is cooler napa danville, san carlos, morgan hill from the upper 70s and mid 80s yesterday to 70s and lower 80s on the forecast highs for today mainly 50s now on all the temps, a couple of 60s, but mainly 50s. We are running cooler. It was a bigger spread not too long ago. Now its about 1 to 5 degrees cooler, but thats the system moving in. The rain line could be pretty impressive if youre up in del norte, humboldt county, or maybe parts of mendocino county, south bay. What cloud cover . Its sunny down here and it will probably stay sunny until late morning, early afternoon when some higher clouds drift in. So after this system goes through, then the high builds in and i mean, we are going for wild swings here over the next two weeks. Its the way it looks here. High pressure will nose in quick, warm up. Wednesday, thursday looks hot. The good news is if you dont like heat, it kicks out of here rapidly. And by saturday, were going to drop a good 20 to 25 degrees as another system comes in. What will be interesting to see is forecast models are projecting a deep system for us, which would be rain and much cooler temps. Maybe next tuesday, wednesday, well see. But i tend to believe that all three of them latched on to it today, though, high clouds, a lot of cloud cover north, more sun to the south. Well see 6070s to near 80. This appears to be the coolest day of the week for many. Warmer temps are on the way. Tuesday, big time for wednesday into thursday , probably most of friday, and then a big drop over the weekend. You guys. All right. Just in time for the weekend that cooldown. Thank you so much, steve. Appreciate it. Coming up on mornings on two, the nine as a couple of schools are set to reopen in lahaina following the deadly wildfires. Health officials are now concerned about the detection of toxic ash. The warning for those who are going to the impacted fire zones. And at least three people are dead in oakland after another violent weekend. We will talk live with councilman kalb and the safety meeting that hes hosting happening today and what he plans to do to help combat the continued problems travel. Officials say the campuses are safe, but some parents said they worry their children could be exposed to toxins left behind from the fire. The Hawaii Health department is warning that people returning to the lahaina fire zone take precautions and avoid exposure to ash and dust. The state last month tested ash that fell onto eight homes in a section of maui. These tests uncovered arsenic and several other dangerous compounds. Research leaders think these toxins will also be found in lahaina. Heavy metals likely came from Construction Materials that burned and the presence of those substances is not surprising. But the concentrations are indeed high. The arsenic, which is the greatest concern, is 140 times above the Environmental Action level. As Property Owners are allowed back into their burned out areas, their doctors are advising people to wear personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and respirator respirators. While pregnant women and children should wait before returning. Air monitors are being set up around lahaina to monitor air quality. It features stories from the community in San Franciscos Mission District as hispanic heritage month comes to an end. Ktvu is Cristina Rendon takes a look at the history of the paper and how it continues to thrive. Amid the hustle and bustle of historic 24th street in San Franciscos Mission District. Aksyon latina is a Cultural Arts and Media Organization nestled between stores and restaurants. The nonprofit publishes ethical news paper, meaning the owl every two weeks, 10,000 copies continue to get printed and distributed throughout San Francisco and the bay area. Aksyon latinas is executive director Fatima Ramirez calls el tecolote their cornerstone project. Its the longest running bilingual publication in california, with stories printed in both english and spanish. I think my favorite is when i see folks holding the newspaper because theyre in it, you know, the proud feeling of knowing that their story is being told. Alexis de rosas has been editor in chief since 2014. Yes, we are based in the mission and we do cover the mission. But i also see us as this regional paper. We cover what i like to call el pueblo, the people. Hes proud to carry on the tradition of community journalism. Its our community. Latino Community Gets kind of really over simplified. And i think my job here has really allowed me to explore the nuance. Rs of our community. Were not just, you know, one people with one cultural experience. Were not one people with just one migration, an experience. El tecolote has one full time writer, one full time photographer, and relies on volunteers to tell peoples stories. The paper was first founded by volunteers more than five decades ago. Led by a man named juan gonzalez. He was born and raised in stockton, then moved to San Francisco in the mid 60s to attend San Francisco state university. Counselors were telling me theres no future in journalism and money. You cant make a lot of money. Its going to be tenuous in terms of, you have a job. Gonzalez didnt listen. He was only 22 years old, a fresh journalism graduate when he was asked by sf state to stay and become a professor in the la raza studies program. I was teaching people how to write, and that was my maybe 15 students how to write and how to write about community. The neighborhood here, the mission. But there was no place to get the stories published. He asked students to help him start a newspaper serving the needs of the latino community. In the mission. We had a fundraiser for an amateur talent show, raised 350, and that was enough to publish four issues of a four page, 5000 copy edition of a newspaper on august 24th, 1970. The First Edition was printed. I had said to myself and told the staff, look, im willing to commit five years of my life to do this. Okay . Are you with me . I said, okay, at least a year. Yeah, okay. We can do a year. I said, ill take that at the very beginning we were like nomads. Going from working out of peoples kitchens or garages or, you know, Community Centers would give us some space and being bilingual right off the bat was really important. This year, the paper marks 53 years in publication. Its a golden milestone. So it also shows how much it means to folks and it speaks to why were still needed in the community as well. The papers archives are now inspiration for an art gallery in and latinas headquarters, this one featuring comics of stories covered in the 90s el tecolote has expanded its reach as well, with a website and two recently launched podcasts getting harder and harder to live in the Mission District where were currently based. So we want to make sure that were reaching them where were where they are at. Gonzalez is still recruiting volunteers, raising money, and on occasion hell write a story. If youre passionate about something, youre going to make, youre going to make a commitment to do right by it. He credits the papers longevity to community support, donations and the staff. If that army of volunteers over the years, that 400 plus volunteers that contributed to the paper as translators or as writers, photographers, illustrators, designers, distributors of the paper, thats the army that really enriches and made it possible for the paper to exist so long. The hope is el tecolote will keep flying high for another 50 years, amplifying latinx voices. I really always look to this quote as a north star for our work. Yo soy el tecolote. Yo soy la gente yo soy ustedes in San Franciscos Mission District. Cristina rendon ktvu fox two news. We have told so many wonderful stories. This hispanic heritage month. Right now, the organizers of an effort to recall Alameda County District Attorney pamela price, they have started collecting signatures on a recall petition now. And people who signed that petition say they blame the da for an increase in crime in the county. I lived in oakland for 30 years and its never been as bad as it is now. Pamela price was elected with 53 of the vote last year after campaigning on a platform of criminal justice reform. Some say her chances mean criminals are empowered to break the law because they know there will be fewer consequences. Price still defends her decision, though. Ive been seeing and experiencing the crime wave in oakland, and i do believe that its directly related to the da and her policies on restorative justice. People of Alameda County elected me to do this work and were doing it in order to get the recall on the ballot, organizers have to collect 73,000 signatures by march 5th. There, theres word this morning that President Biden is considering traveling to israel in the coming days as the us tries to prevent the conflict between israel and hamas from becoming a wider middle east war. Israeli airstrikes continue leveling neighborhoods in the gaza strip in retaliation against a deadly surprise attack from hamas terrorists. Israeli troops now stand ready at the border with gaza and expected Ground Invasion is coming up soon is what experts say. More than a Million People are now sheltering in United Nations facilities as the area is running out of food and water. Not one drop of water, not one grain of wheat, not a liter of fuel that has been allowed in the gaza strip today, the Israeli Military said 199 people are being held hostage in gaza, which is a higher number than previously reported. Supporters of palestinians are speaking out all across the bay area. This is the mother of a result of 75 years of oppression and the lack of a lack of action from the international community. Protests was first rallied at san joses santana row, then marched down winchester boulevard, waving palestinian flags and chanting for a free palestine. For palestine to mexico. Palestine to mexico. Border walls have got to go border walls have got to go. There will be innocent people dying. And thats what thats the thing that sucks about war. These local protesters are concerned that food, water and medicine are not reaching civilians in gaza. Hospitals there are overwhelmed with patients and running out of supplies. The Jewish Community Relations Council says it is deeply disturbed by some of the graffiti seen in San Francisco after saturdays propalestinian rally. The Organization Posted photos on social media showing antisemitic messages spray painted on windows along market street. The Jewish Community Relations Council says its been in touch with city leaders and has reported the vandalism to the San Francisco police department. Happening today, a meeting to address what some call a growing crisis. The city of oakland is coming off a particularly violent weekend in which a string of shootings left three people dead all this year, oakland has seen a dramatic jump in the number of homicides, robberies, property crimes, car breakins and vehicle thefts residents have long been calling for better Public Safety and some longtime oaklanders say theyve never seen it this bad. Lets welcome to the nine Oakland City Council member dan kalb. Youre having a meeting later this evening. What do you expect to hear . Councilman, thanks for having me here. Yeah, were having a meeting at the memorial cathedral this evening at 6 00. You know, we expect to hear what weve been hearing all along. And this is nothing not surprising that people are some people are fearful that the increase in crime has gotten serious and the violent nature of some of those crimes is whats unusual this year. And thats in heightened the fears, understandably so. So were taking action. We want to share, hear from people as well as share information as to what were actually doing. Well have a the assistant police chief will be there. Someone from the county Probation Department will be there and therell be business people, Business Leaders there. Its a its a Community Meeting to Work Together. Its fundamentally critical that all parties in the city Work Together to make this happen. We dont need finger pointing about what happened two years ago or three years ago or ten years ago. We need to Work Together to move forward now. And thats what were doing. And thats why ive put forward a legislation a few weeks ago that the Council Unanimously adopted to move forward on security cameras, 911 dispatch improvements, a Lateral Academy walking beat officers for more visibility, regional collaboration, getting guns off the street. A lot of things were going to do. We cant promise, we cant guarantee things overnight, but were working hard to make things better. Councilman, let me ask you, other than giving a space for oaklanders to share what theyre experiencing, weve seen similar forms become very testy in the past few months. Will there be any action you could take based on what your residents tell you tonight . Well, i dont know what theyre going to say yet. Well hear from what they say and then well see if that leads to any additional action. Some times what we see, what we hear from people is, you know, tell us more information and communicate in a better way, a more thoroughly. And i totally understand that. And so thats what well definitely do that. But the actions we need to take are not ones to merely make people aware of things. The actions we need to take, which is fine. Its fine to do that. But the actions we need to take are ones that will actually make a difference, actually make people safer. You know, have have a tangible impact. So im focusing on and my colleagues are focusing on things that will have a tangible impact to reduce crime and make people safer. I know a lot of oaklanders say, look, i just want to see opd drive up my street. Shop owners say, i just want to see a little bit of Police Presence to keep the bad elements away. You mentioned the assistant Oakland Police chief is going to be there. Of course, the city has been without a chief for most of this year. Do you think that has affected sorry, we have a chief the acting chief is a chief and he and Darren Allison is doing a good job. So lets not say we dont have a chief. We have an acting chief and we have an acting assistant chief and the acting assistant chief will be out there tonight. I misspoke. We oakland doesnt have a Permanent Police chief. Im sure that you heard the news in recent days that the former chief, laurent armstrong, is on the short list for those who want to be the head of opd. Would you support his coming back . I think thats really an irrelevant question. Hes not going to be the next police chief. Thats 100 clear and that him being one of seven people is really not relevant to moving things forward. Okay. So the mayor makes the decision. The city council does not make that decision. The mayors been very clear about that. And so theres no use to debate it any longer. The mayor will pick a new police chief when she gets three names presented to her, which she has not yet, which has not yet happened. I hope it happens soon. I hope it happens very soon. Do you think oakland has suffered because we havent had a Permanent Police chief for most of the year . I think i think the Police Officers are doing the job they need to do in a day to day basis, no matter what. So i dont think that i dont think thats been the key factor. I think the key factor has been that an increase in crime, which which we dont we dont always know the reasons why crime has gone up so, so bad in a given year. I remember back, back 2012, 2013 was a huge crime year. Armed robberies, murders were through the roof as much or more as they are today. And we didnt always know why, but we took certain actions and within a couple of years later, crime started to go down and so but we dont want to we dont want to wait a couple of years. We want crime to go down in a couple of weeks or a couple of months, not a couple of years. And thats why we have to take action and Work Together to make it happen from what ive read, there are no plans to have the Alameda County da at tonights meeting. We invited the Probation Department, which focuses on reentry services. A lot of people have a lot of people have been asking questions about that. So the das office was not invited, but the county Probation Department was invited. Okay. Can i ask you a little bit about how crimes are being handled in Alameda County and specifically your home in oakland . Some people say that there is a feeling in oakland that people who do bad things arent going to get caught or punished severely. And many people point to the new das progressive policies as a reason for that. Do you see that as a factor in whats happening in your town or. No, im not that im aware of. I mean, again, i cant tell you yes or no, but im not aware that thats a factor. I know you know, every da thats ever existed in Alameda County and every other county, for that matter, theyve always prosecute some cases and not prosecuted other cases. And we dont have any statistics to show us that thats happening, more so or less so now than two years ago. But so i dont know the answer to that question. When we get statistics next year to determine how it relates to the previous das and other counties, then well know the answer. We dont know the answer now. And anybody who thinks they do know the answer now, i think is not correct. We have to wait till we get the real data and then well find the answer. I dont know the answer yet. Okay. I know youll get an earful from oaklanders tonight. Well run down the details of the meeting, but first we have to thank you long time Oakland City Council member dan kalb in oakland. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. Of course. Of course. Lets get to that meeting here so you can attend the information is on your screen. It starts at 6 00 tonight. The Public Safety Community Meeting at b. B. Memorial cathedral at 40th and telegraph, members of opd and also the Alameda County Probation Department. As a councilman said, well be there. All right. The San Francisco 40 ers have now lost their first game of the season, going down to the Cleveland Browns. The main problems were clevelands bad weather defense that gave the niners trouble all throughout the game. Joining us this morning to talk about the loss and how several key players are injured is dan dibley. The co host of willard and daves on 95. 7. The game. Dan, good morning. Welcome back to mornings on two yeah sal its good to be back and i wish i was here under different circumstance but the zero and the loss column is no more. And before we get into what happened to the niners credit to cleveland they had a game plan. They executed it and they took it to the niners for the majority of that game. Yeah. The first drive the niners came out they looked pretty good. I thought oh, this is the way this game is going to go. And then they made adjustments right there after that first drive. They were limiting the niners on defense. And also, you know, i saw your instagram thing, by the way, you got to follow dibs on instagram. Um, you said that we have to mention the refs, but the 40 niners could have won despite those bad calls, right . Dan yeah they had the rookie kicker with a very makeable kick and jake moody will be the first one to tell you that hes got to make that kick. He missed too. The first one was a long one, which is 5050, but the one he missed to win the game is absolutely one that you have to make when youre a third round pick. Now that said, there were a couple of big, big, big penalties that win against the 49 ers. Im a big fan of the refs in general, but i thought they had a bit of a bad game and this was the way it all started with some crazy back and forth and man, they got chippy early and i think that that was uh, something that kind of set a tone for the referees as though they were overly enforcing. I think a lot of things. Christian mccaffrey was great, but then he got hurt. Deebo samuel got hurt, but ultimately late in the game too. I think questionable calls that win against the 49 ers was a big reason why the browns were able to get that score that gave them the lead. But the niners d was solid. The niners offense for the first time all year. A little bit shaky. So you know dan isnt it kind of a relief in a way . I mean, i dont think anyone would ever admit it, but youre not going to break that. Miami dolphins 1972 record, the Philadelphia Eagles lost yesterday. So now everyones undefeated. And thats why they say on any given sunday you think the niners bounce back and really punish the Minnesota Vikings on monday night football. Well, lets see how healthy they are, because this team is really dictated and predicated by Christian Mccaffrey and the ground game. And yesterday, cleveland really neutralized him. And then he got the oblique injury. We dont yet know how severe thats going to be. And Deebo Samuels had a bit of a shoulder ongoing for some time. So those are two big injuries going into a second straight road game against a Minnesota Team that theyre no pushover and now theyre down a little bit from last year. But this niner team had its first real dose of adversity. And you heard brock purdy taking a lot of blame on himself. He had his first bad game. He wasnt accurate. They missed a couple of big throws. Brandon aiyuk had two big drops on plays that would have resulted in huge gains. So across the board, the team had a bit of a bad day. Last question, dan brock purdy, you know, he he had a is it a bad game or do you think it was just a game where he underperformed, according to his standards . Well, his new standards, right, sal . Because hes set this new bar where hes now in the mvp conversation and the last drive he led them down the field in the two minute offense, put him in position to get a field goal that if jake moody kicks that and they win the game. Were looking at brock purdy a little bit differently because they still would be undefeated. And i dont want to say bad game like quarterback controversy because thats nonsense. But for the first time he made a couple of plays that had you scratching your head and he knows that he has to be better on sunday in minnesota. Dan dibley is the Reasonable Voice on willard and dibbs. Id say. Dan yeah, exactly. Afternoon drive 95 to 7 the game. Listen in because hes going to have more thoughts. Thanks, dan. But its all over different businesses. Yes is what is kind of the larger thing and youre presenting why why at the variety of business talk a little bit about the reason for that. Well, i think the reason for a variety business is just to show oakland style all over the city, right . So we have the temescal. Were going to have downtown. We have, you know, west oakland, jack, londons going to be represented. So just all the different neighborhoods and the style of the city. So i think thats thats thats the reason behind it. Its one of the reasons its going to be very positive. And fun. How many years has it been around . I think this is the first. The very first. Thats why its so exciting. The very first one. Were very excited. Wow. Yeah, were paying homage to hip hop. The closing ceremony, 50 years of hip hop. So come on out. All right. So, dorian. Dorian, i want to talk a little bit about you and what youre going to be presenting for this. Youre wearing your decked out in jewelry that you designed. We see some of it here. Talk a little bit about your involvement in oakland style. Yeah, so im on the Advisory Board for visit oakland and im also going to be taking part in the second event which which is bespoke cocktails. So there are three pairs of people style makers in oakland who were talking about about their inspirations, their work and theres still Tickets Available to that to that event on on thursday night. Yeah thats going to be october 19th. Thursday yeah. Wheres it going to be held. At the castle at the kissel the new hotel right off of broadway. Its gorgeous hotel. Yeah and itll just be a fun evening of bespoke cocktails and great conversation. All right. Tell us a little bit about your business, the business of making jewelry. We see we see that derrick is wearing some of your jewelry. So talk a bit about that and what you have here and what youre wearing. Yeah, so here i have a selection of my of my latest collection called believe. And it is based on the idea of not only just transformation, but the fact that butterflies must realize that theyre a butterfly before anyone else can kind of see that. And before they get any outside confirmation of the fact. So this, this collection is one thats going to be exhibited and also informally modeled on friday at a fashion show at the claremont hotel, which is also part of oaklands style week. Oh, thats going to be thats going to be fantastic. So thats going to be held. The folks that are going to be participating in the fashion show that youre going to be wearing your jewelry there. Were at the claremont inside the claremont. Will this be so this will be in one of the sort of like the larger theres a larger place that used to be a former restaurant. Yep. So that event is actually sold out and were doing that in conjunction with mcmullen on one of the one of the clothing boutiques here in the city. Yeah, thats going to be. Do you have a location where people can visit and see your work . I do. I do. I have a studio in downtown montclair and the pieces are all made here in oakland, so its truly local down to the down to the studs and to the individually handcrafted prongs on each piece. Its beautiful. What are you hoping for . Dorian for oakland style. Are you hoping that this will become an annual event and get bigger over time . Im sure absolutely. I mean, i just i just want it to be able to really represent the full breadth of oakland and just not only our fashion style, which is incredible, but just also the various ways in which we kind of come to the table with our cultural background sounds and our and our just excitement and our energy and just really bring that that sense of oakland to the larger world. And derek, i wanted to ask you, when you talk about oakland style and these different neighborhoods, what do you want people to take from it that attend this event this year that is just very different. Its very eclectic. And, you know, one style doesnt fit one person. We have style for everybody and thats oakland style. I think thats thats were going to definitely display that. Yeah. All right.
