Were learning more now about the woman whos been selected by governor gavin newsom to fill the Us Senate Seat held by the late senator Dianne Feinstein. Her name is Laphonza Butler. Shes a democratic strategist, although shes never held office before, she has a lot of political experience. She was an adviser to Kamala Harriss president ial campaign, an among many others. Right now, ms. Butler is the head of emilys list. Its a well known Political Organization that supports democratic female candidates who favor abortion rights. The governor, in naming the selection of ms. Butler fulfills a promise he made to appoint a black woman to Feinsteins Senate seat. Ms. Butler could be sworn in to that senate seat as early as wednesday day. Now, before she worked with emilys list, ms. Butler was a former labor leader with seiu local 2015 in its california was biggest labor union. She also worked on Public Policy and other campaigns with airbnb. She was a uc regent. Between 2018 to 2021, she moved to maryland when she became president of emilys list in 2021. The Governor Newsoms office says she will reregister as a voter in california, where she still owns a home. Now the funeral arrangements are now confirmed for the late senator Dianne Feinstein. Her body was returned here to the bay area saturday night on board a jet from the president ial military fleet. The plane landed at sfo. Her body was taken to San Francisco sinai Memorial Chapel with the Police Escort this coming wednesday, Dianne Feinstein will lie in state in the rotunda at San Francisco city hall. The public you are invited to pay final respects between 9 00 in the morning until 7 00 that night. And then on thursday, a Funeral Service will be held in the herbst theater at the war memorial. And Performing Arts Center on venice. Now, that is not open to the public because of limited space there. There will be a simulcast brought cast at city hall and online. And after the funeral, senator feinstein will be buried during a private service for family members. The former house speaker, nancy pelosi, says Dianne Feinstein can set the tone for her entire political career. When she was a board of supervisors president and she announced the shooting deaths of then mayor George Moscone and supervisor harvey milk at San Francisco city hall. Since then, bart says its Police Department made more than 300 felony arrests, the highest number since the covid 19 pandemic. They also brought down emergency call response times to under four minutes and offered competitive pay to its officers. Franklin they say, is a 27 year veteran of the department. The announcement will become official later today. Thats when barts general manager will officially introduce Kevin Franklin as the police chief. Thats set to happen at 12 00 noon today. Kerr court is designed to help people with untreated schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders find Mental Health services and housing. This new civil court is part of Governor Newsoms response to californias homeless crisis. It allows family members and First Responders to file a petition on behalf of an adult whose condition is deteriorated. A judge can order that person into treatment. All right. Our time is 707 fleet week in San Francisco. Officials early starts today. And it almost didnt happen this year. Right . If congress hadnt reached that last minute budget agreement over the weekend, the us military would not have been allowed to take part in fleet week. Now those festivities can go on as planned, starting at noon today with a free concert by us Navy Musicians and all the way through to sundays final blue angels air show, Navy Spokesperson says thats great for the public and military members who look forward to this event every year. Search and rescue teams are expected to head back to point reyes this hour to continue their search for a swimmer who was reported missing yesterday. Ktvu andre senior in studio now and andre at least one person reported this could be a shark attack. Yeah garcia well rescue teams rushed to the marin county shoreline north of Stinson Beach at about 1030 yesterday morning. Stinson beach police, fire beach police, fire and rescue crews were among the first to respond to the 911 call that was made from Wildcat Beach. They were soon joined by marin county firefighters, the Us Coast Guard and the National Park service. A rescue boat was launched in three medical helicopters also headed to that site. We launch an rwc, which is a rescue watercraft that its essentially a jet ski outfitted for rescue purposes. Our rescue swimmers deployed a dye pack so that they could see the area of the current well, the team continued to search for hours, finally suspending the search when it was too dark to see anything on or in the water. They still arent sure what happened and theyre not ruling out the possibility of a shark attack. Stinson, unfortunately, is known for having sharks out in the waters and most of the time humans and sharks live completely safely together. Local experts say there were only five great white shark attacks in that area between the year 2020 21, and they dont have any confirmed reports since then. Officials have not released any information about the swimmer, including name, age or hometown. And theyre not saying if anyone has filed a missing person report with with that information. Dave all right, andre, thank you. Time now, 715. State police in new york are searching for a nine Year Old Girl who they think was kidnaped during a weekend camping trip with her family. Charlotte cena was last seen saturday night at a state park about 50 miles north of albany, new york. Police received information indicating the little girl may have been kidnaped after she wandered away from her campground and this triggered an amber alert in upstate new york. It has been 30 years now since a bay area kidnaping that dramatically changed how people think of child safety across america. Ppe held a remembrance ceremony for 12 year old polly klaas in mill valley this past weekend. It was the night of october 1st of 1993. She was kidnaped from her bedroom at her home in petaluma, where she was hosting a sleepover with friends. The man who took her, Richard Allen davis, had a history of crimes against children. He was convicted for the kidnaping and killing and is still on death row. Theres no way on earth the guy that had his hands on polly should have ever been out of prison. Everybody knows that. Absolutely. Everybody knows that. So we started going after some laws that would make a difference. We had some hesitation at first, but we got behind the three strikes law. And you know what happened with that . Criminals started leaving california. Her father, mark klaas, created the class Kids Foundation with a mission to prevent crimes against children. The organization has helped advocate for things like sex offender registries and three strike laws. Klaas says he plans to close the foundation at the end of next year. Our time now. 716. Donald trump is in new york city. He has arrived at his trial on charges of civil fraud. Protesters are gathered outside the courtroom now. Last week, a judge ruled that donald trump and his company committed fraud in his business dealings. The trial this week will determine damages. The new York Attorney general is seeking 250 million in damages and a ban on trump running any businesses in the state of new york. Now today, the us supreme courts new term begins and some of the lawsuits before the court this session will look at censorship on social media. The court will decide if laws in florida and texas that prevent social Media Companies from blocking content based on users viewpoint points are constitutional. The court will also decide if Public Officials can block critics on their social media accounts. Oral arguments are expected to begin early next year. Senator bob menendez and his wife are due back in court in new york today for a hearing in connection to federal corruption charges against them. Federal prosecutors accused them of accepting bribes of gold bars, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and a car. They say it was all in exchange to get the senator to use his influence to aid egypts government and interfere in criminal investigations for friends. Theyve both pleaded not guilty and say the money was from a personal savings account. Your time now. 718. Happening today, the Us Postal Service will unveil a new commemorative postage stamp honoring the Late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. This new forever stamp features an oil painting of Justice Ginsburg in her black judicial robe, wearing the iconic white collar. Health care workers say that Staff Shortages have even affected their own access to medical care. I had an eye infection in and i went to the emergency they gave me a couple of drops. Mind you, it was over the phone. I tried to get an appointment as an own health care. It was three months out before i can even get a appointment with an ophthalmologist. Thats just simple. The kaiser wants to hire 10,000 new employees this year and hopes to reach that before the end of this month. Kaiser also says appointments and operations are continuing for now as negotiations continue. The patients we talked to hope the strike can be avoided. Its also concerning because my mom is a cancer patient. You know, and so does that affect her . Shes currently here getting a blood transfusion. So, i mean, its scary that 60,000 of the workers who could walk out there here in california if there is a strike. The union plans to stay on the picket lines for three days. Well keep an eye on it for you. 732 lets go back to the desk and we continue to learn more about californias next senator, governor gavin newsom announced last night that hes appointed Laphonza Butler to fill the seat held by the late senator Dianne Feinstein and ktvu allie rasmus in the studio now to tell us more about her and how this appointment could complicate that race for the senate next year. Yeah, good morning, dave and gasia Laphonza Butler has never held Political Office before, but shes a longtime democratic strategist. But now that shes been appointed, californias next senator, she will be the senates first lgbtq member. Now, a little more about butlers background. She was an advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, president campaign. She is a former seiu president and represented more than 325,000 Health Care Workers. She also worked as a policy analyst for airbnb and she was a uc regent for several years. Right now shes president of the Political Organization emilys list, which backs women candidates who support abortion rights. Now, she wont necessarily be just a caretaker of this office, a representative from the Governors Office says there were no preconditions to her accepting this appointment so she could run to keep that senate seat. She was just appointed to in 2024. If thats the case, she would join an already crowded race for that office. Three current members of congress, adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee started campaigning months ago to become californias next senator. There are three formidable candidates already in the race, and you have not held public office. But you get a leg up, you get a leg up as an incumbent as it were, because she will have time served on the senate side and to the extent that she can make an impact with california voters, you never know. So how did the other candidates for that senate seat feel about that . In a Statement Last night, east bay congresswoman barbara lee said, quote, i wish Laphonza Butler well and look forward to working closely with her to deliver for the golden state. Im singularly focused on winning my campaign for senate. California deserves an experienced senator who will deliver on progressive priorities. Thats what im running to do, end quote. And in just the last 30 minutes, congressman adam schiff responded. He said, quote, im glad the governor acted quickly. I want to offer my congratulations to Laphonza Butler on her appointment. I look forward to working closely with her to get things done for california representative katie porter has not yet sent out a statement in response to butlers appointment. Happening today, a trial date is expected to be set by a San Francisco judge for the man accused of killing the founder of cash app, bob lee. Back in april. Right now, nima momeni is in jail facing charges of murder. Prosecutors say his dna was found on the murder weapon, a 3. 5in kitchen knife. Well, many has pleaded not guilty to murder charges and has waived his right to a speedy trial. If convicted, he could get 26 years to life in prison to the east bay now, where police in san leandro are investigating two separate fatal shootings outside the same gym. Investigators say the killings took place ten days apart outside the 24 hour fitness at bayfair mall last month. Police say both victims were men who were found shot to death in cars in the gym parking lot. The say its not clear if the two shootings are related or if the victims were targeted. Our time now, 735 a 400,000 settlement has been approved by the city of san jose for a former san jose Police Officer who says he was harassed because he was muslim. Officer Nabeel Haider joined the san jose Police Department in 1996. In 2018, he filed a lawsuit. His lawyer says haider was repeatedly harassed during Police Briefing meetings and after the nine divided by 11 attacks, he started to be. Targeted and attacked by fellow Police Officers because he was a muslim from the middle east. And what i mean is almost daily basis, he was called names really disgusting names like terrorist suicide bomber, member of isis. And after he left, the police force and filed a lawsuit, the Attorney Says San Jose Police claimed haider took part in the jokes and called it locker room banter. Haider has since moved out of the bay area. The Us District Court of Northern California has ordered the owners of 14 bay area Subway Restaurant to pay their workers nearly 1 million in back wages and damages and sell or shut down their businesses by november 27th. Federal investigator say the owners failed to pay their employees regularly, kept tips left by customers and hired children as young as 14 to use dangerous equipment. The subway is listed in the court order are in sonoma. Napa solano and contra costa counties. A huge catch on the waters on the east coast over the weekend by making you think twice about some swimming in the open waters. I want to show you a 400 pound rough tail stingray. It was found in the Long Island Sound over the weekend. The connecticut fish and wildlife survey crew say they kept it belly up. They measured that stingray and then released it back into the water. Its a Political Organization that supports democratic female candidates who favor abortion rights. The governor, in selecting butler, fulfilled a promise hed made to appoint a black woman to senator feinstein seat. Butler could be sworn into that Us Senate Seat as early as this wednesday for working with emilys list. Butler was a former labor leader with seiu local 2015, californias Largest Labor union. Stinson beach fire crews were among the first to respond to the 911 call that was made from Wildcat Beach around 1030 yesterday. They were soon joined by marin county firefighters, the Us Coast Guard and the National Park service. A rescue boat was launched in three medical helicopters also headed to the site. We launch an rwc, which is a rescue watercraft. Its essentially a jet ski outfitted for rescue purposes. Our rescue swimmers deployed a dye pack so that they could see the area of the current. The teams continue to look for hours before suspending the search when it was too dark to see anything on or in the water. They still arent sure what happened and theyre not ruling out the possibility of that shark attack. Stinson unfortunately, is known for having sharks out in the waters and most of the time hes caimans and sharks live completely safely together. Although local experts say there were only five great white shark attacks in that area between the year 2020 21. They dont have any confirmed reports since then, officials have released no information about the swimmer, including name, age or hometown. And theyre not saying if anyone has filed a missing person report with that info station. New York State Police are searching for a nine Year Old Girl who they say was likely abducted while on a weekend camping trip with her family. Charlotte tina was last seen saturday night at a state park about 50 miles north of albany. Police say theyve received Little Information indicating the girl. Well, they have received information indicating that the little girl may have been kidnaped after she wandered away from her campground. Her disappearance has triggered an amber alert in upstate new york. It has been 30 years since a bay area kidnaping dramatically changed how people think of child safety across america. The people held a remembrance ceremony for 12 year old polly klaas in mill valley this past weekend. We are learning more about californias next senator. Governor gavin newsom announced last night hes appointing Laphonza Butler to fill the seat that was held by the late senator Dianne Feinstein. Ktvu allie rasmus is here to tell us more about her and how her appointment could complicate the race for californias next next senator next year. Yeah Laphonza Butler is a former labor leader and head of an seiu union that represented more than 300,000 caregivers and Health Care Workers. She was also an adviser to senator to Vice President Kamala Harris president ial campaign. Shes never held Political Office before, but Laphonza Butler has been a well known democratic strategist for years. Right now, she is president of the Political Organization emilys list, which backs women candidates who support abortion rights. She also worked as a policy analyst for airbnb, and she was a uc regent for several years. Now her appointment makes her the first lgbtq member of the us senate. In a statement, butler said she is, quote, honored to accept the nomination from the governor and went on to say shell do her best to live up to the late senator feinsteins leadership and legacy. Shes very bright and has a quite a background and in Union Organizing and as an advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris. So shes been around politics for a long time. But its going to take her a little while to figure out how the senate works, even with advisers that will help her run the course. Now, weve learned this morning that butler wont necessarily be just a caretaker of the office of senate for the next year. A representative from newsoms office says there were no preconditions to her accepting this appointment. So that means she could run to keep the senate seat. She was just appointed to in 2024. If thats the case, she would join an already crowded race. Three current members of congress, adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee started campaigning months ago to become californias next senator. So far, two of them have responded to news of butlers appointment. East bay congresswoman barbara lee said, quote, i wish laphonza well and i look forward to working closely with her to deliver for the golden state. Im singularly focused on winning my campaign for senate. California deserves an experienced senator who will deliver on progressive priorities. Congressman schiff also shared his reaction just about an hour ago, saying, quote, im glad the governor acted quickly. I want to offer my congratulations to Laphonza Butler on her appointment. I look forward to working closely with her to get things done for california. A representative porter has not yet sent any sort of statement, Public Statement in response to this appointment.
