Good evening. Im julie julie haener. And im mike mibach. We begin tonight with a nightmare in nevada. One person is dead at the burning man festival and tens of thousands of others are stranded in the desert after severe rains flooded the festival grounds. Ktvu s Bailey Ocarroll joins us now. Shes in the newsroom. Bailey, you heard from two of the attendees. What did they tell you about the conditions out there . Thats right. Julie i spoke to john gaines. Hes a burning man, seasoned pro at this point. It marked his 21st year at the festival this year. We also heard from eileen lelchuk snyder. This was her first year out there. Both said the same thing. The situation, of course, unprecedented, but they did say that everyones rallying together to help each other out. An unusual late summer storm turned what was supposed to be a week away at burning man into this. This is eileen lelchuk snyder, first time at burning man, and now shes stuck in the nevada desert. The rain itself isnt. John gaines traveled from new york to attend the festival. Hes gone to burning man for the last 21 years. But he says hes never seen anything like this. This ive been through a couple of strong rains, but those were one time rains created a problem and then it dried up and problem went away. The issue this year was multiple rains and i dont know that the event has ever experienced that. Gaines made it out an hour and a half before the gates were closed. The rest of his group is still stuck. Its the only person in my group who got out. We have about 60 people out there. Theyre veterans. They know what theyre doing. They got food and water. Theyre not panicking more than a half inch of rain fell at the festival site on friday. More came down this weekend. Organizers closed the festival to cars and vehicles after one death was reported, though they have not said if that death was related to the storm or not. Both john and eileen said people are making the most out of the situation. Most people are still just chilling as you can see around me, theres some empty campsites, but people seem to have been embraced and are not worried about getting out of here. We know that its going to dry up. And both echoed the same message that people are coming together. Therell be a lot of sharing. People proactively going out and saying, hey, ive got a cup of watermelon and some cans of tuna and some water. Do you need anything . They say helping others is no surprise. A quick Online Search and youll see it everywhere for dj and music producer diplo took to twitter to share his experience since saying he and Comedian Chris Rock walked five miles out of the festival before they were picked up by a passing fan. Now i asked john how he thought festival organizers were handling the current situation. He thought it was going well. I asked him if he would return next year, which would be his 22nd year. Yes i dont know what the reason that the festival was scheduled to last through tomorrow. Police in san rafael responded to a shooting in the parking lot of a safeway store. That shooting was reported just about 1 00 this morning outside the safeway in terra. Linda, west of highway 101, once on scene, officers say they found a 30 year old novato man with gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital. Initial investigation found that a group of four suspects approached another Group Already in the parking lot when one person started shooting. The four suspects are still at large. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact san rafael police. The chp is investigating a shooting on interstate 580 that left two people injured in oakland. This happened about 430 yesterday afternoon in the westbound direction right near seminary avenue. Video shared here to social media shows the scene. Chp says two people were in a car when they were shot. They took themselves to the hospital where they are expected to recover. Officers tell us another vehicle was struck by a stray bullet, but no one inside was hit. The chp has stopped traffic on all westbound lanes while officers investigated. No arrests have been made in richmond. A crash overnight left two drivers dead and a passenger injured. Officers responded to the two car accident at about two this morning on westbound interstate 580 at castro street. A fire started from that crash. The drivers of a Nissan Sentra and toyota camry died at the scene. All lanes were closed down, but reopened by about 5 a. M. The chp has not said yet if drugs or alcohol were factors in that crash. Well it is Labor Day Weekend. The unofficial end of summer and a popular weekend end for getaways. Heres a live look right now at interstate 80 in emeryville. As you can see, traffic is moving. Its not too terribly tight up at this hour. Travel experts are saying this will be a big weekend for travel either by road, air or train data from triple a shows bookings for hotels, airlines, rental cars and cruises are all up 4 compared to last year. And a big reminder for all you drivers out there this long holiday weekend, the westbound lanes of interstate 80 between interstate 780in vallejo and highway four in hercules remain shut down as caltrans works on the final phase of a major repaving project. Now, part of the closure includes the westbound side of the alfred zampa memorial bridge, or better known as the carquinez bridge. It is the first time caltrans is shutting down the bridge for a critical work since it was built 20 years ago. All westbound lanes are scheduled to reopen tuesday morning. The chp maximum enforcement period is underway this holiday weekend. The Highway Patrol is partnering with agencies in nevada and arizona. Drivers are urged to slow down and designate a sober driver or take a rideshare. During last years Labor Day Weekend, 52 people were killed in crashes up and down california and more than 900 dui arrests were made. The union is asking for pay raises of up to 40 caps. Members say they will only call for a strike if the union cannot reach a contract agreement with the state. New figures from the bureau of labor statistics shows the five sectors experiencing significant worker shortages is manufacturing topping the list, with 550,000 job openings in july. Consumer action is next, with about 363,000 jobs available. There are also shortages of commercial airline pilots, High School Teachers and school bus drivers. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy visited maui this weekend with other lawmakers to tour the devastation from last months wildfires. Mccarthy says he and his family have visited lahaina before and was familiar with the layout of the town. He says he wants to ensure the islands recovery from what he calls, quote, sheer devastation. The undocking was scheduled for yesterday, but was delayed due to weather conditions on the ground. Tonight, a prison in minnesota remains on lockdown after inmates took over part of the facility. The stillwater state prison is in bayport, located east of minneapolis. Corrections Officials Say an estimated 100 inmates in one living unit refused to return to their cells. Authorities say all employees were removed from the common areas of the unit that were taken over. Extra police, firefighters and other emergency teams were standing by outside the prison as the situation unfolded, the facility remained on lockdown status after nearly all prisoners returned to their cells. The company is recalling more than 65,000 motorcycles as several models made from 2018 through this year are affected by the recall. The issue is over a rear shock absorber fastener that may break causing loss of tire pressure and then control, which could lead to a crash. A new report finds Cancer Patients are not always getting the care they need because of the volume of red tape they have to deal with. Researchers found patients who had to contend with a lot of paperwork were 18 more likely to experience delays in getting their care or find themselves unable to stick to a treatment plan. For as you age, you know, its time to start getting off the couch. Zahrade starting just outside oracle park. The race either a5k or ten k takes you along the embarcadero, then inside the ballpark. A lot of fun. You know, a lot of good perks at the end and just good people, good vibes. It took 15 minutes for the first runners to finish the race. The first woman part of a team called the Alaska Airlines allstars. Ive been a professional runner the last five years. The race emphasized a focus on Mental Health and awareness, as well as promoting women and girls in sports. Its why the all stars are made up of olympic and professional female runners. This is an incredible experience to finish in the stadium. I think it was my favorite finish line that ive ever run in my running career. For sure. This is the 14th giant race next year. Those little those little short waves that are going through this thing. Theres a little shortwave trough there. And then it ridges out a little. But my point is, the whole week were in this very kind of its like a fall pattern, certainly. I mean, it is september here, but its definitely a fall pattern in these temperatures today. Exactly what youd expect. And say late september, early october. Yeah, thats how its going to go. Air quality got better with this pattern because it blew out all that smoke. Smoke was getting bad last week, if you remember, much better this weekend. Fog at the coast. Again, its a deep marine layer because of that trough in those little shortwave troughs that come through and this pattern, there it is. You can kind of see if you if you have an imagination, you can see where the trough is. You can see that dip right there where the rain is on the east side of it. And thats up in the lake tahoe area where there are still some scattered showers going on. So thats kind of winds down tomorrow. But this mild weather pattern, which, by the way, does a great job mitigating fire danger and helping with air quality quite a bit. So thats thats the upshot to this whole deal. So heres heres right now. Heres tomorrow morning. A lot of fog, low clouds, cool start. And then tomorrow afternoon tomorrows temperatures just like today tuesday. Same thing in the morning, same thing in the afternoon. Less fog on tuesday afternoon and temperatures about the same. So were going to ride the hot spots are going to be this whole week are generally going to be in the mid 80s and then when it gets warmer here towards the weekend, theyre going to be in the upper 80s, which is fine. Fire danger, not as high as it can be or could be. And again, again, thats that trough. Thats why i keep showing you because i want you to see, oh, this is why its this loop, this dip that comes in and it just creates a cooler environment. And again, thats where the showers came from this weekend. Thats why the air quality got a lot better. And theyre actually troughs like that. Super helpful this time of year. The only down shot is on the troughs when they go through and they translate through sometimes the high jumps in behind it and that creates that those fire danger winds. This is very typical pattern for the early fall. But if that whole low translates out hi bumps in and thats when you get the concern for big winds not seeing that now but thats what leads to it.
