Their work looking for victims. Theyre marking cars and buildings with an x and by doing so, it allows others to know it has been searched. Officials say hundreds of people are still missing. Meantime, thousands of displaced survivors still need shelter and many have also been forming long lines for relief supplies. Fema director Deanna Criswell says Emergency Managers are exploring all options to help. And volunteers are really coming forward from all over, looking for ways to assist in the recovery effort. Reporter gina silva has been speaking with some of those volunteers. She joins us live this hour from the island with a look at what theyre doing. Gina well, i can tell you that a lot of people on this island are extremely frustrated with local authorities, with the way they say they have handled the situation. So they are, you know, preparing. Theyre doing everything they can to help the people of lahaina cooking oil. You cant sit back and watch people suffer. You have to jump in and help. At the kihei boat ramp in maui, volunteers are busy collecting donations for people in lahaina. We feel like we are crowdsourcing and running our own logistics, coordination and supplies, getting them in here you can see behind you these are all local residents. Water propane tanks, fuel, baby supplies, clothing. People in this community are bringing all kinds of necessities for their neighbors. Right now, the government is letting us down. So its really important that all of the people of maui stick together, come together and support one another at this really crazy time. I feel i have to do whatever i can. Im here. My brothers and sisters are over there suffering. I have to do something. Go tour boats loaded with supplies are making runs to lahaina several times a day. A lot of whats happening is jet ski transfer. While authorities deny reports of looting, volunteer tears tell the different story. Caravans coming in with supplies are being at gunpoint. We are fearful that law and order is going to break down and we need boots on the ground and assistance immediate early. I think it was a big misconception. Jeremy argonauts owns coconut caboose in lahaina, which miraculously survived the fire. He says people were taking whatever they could get. But jeremy says people did it out of desperation. 99 of our town is incinerate. So if there is a water jug here or a blanket there or something that people could use for the night just to make it through, they were you know, they were probably trying to obtain it for a second, which i mean, you and i both can understand that, you know, right now theres still a lot of people in need. Members of the nonprofit ariel recovery arrived on the island this week to help in search and rescue and to provide medical assistance. We had people who had some respiratory difficulties, some smoke inhalation, and we had some broken bones, people who were already starting to realize that they didnt have the medicines that they were going to need. Ariel recovery came fully supplied with medications while members have seen a lot on their different missions, they say the magnitude of this Natural Disaster is overwhelming. Until you see it for yourself. Its just heartbreaking. At the same time, its also beautiful to see the way people on this island have responded to tragedy. People helping people is its a really powerful thing. And just seeing the everyone come together, its we see it all the time. It warms you, it moves you, and it gives people hope that this will get better. Search and rescue teams continue to look for people who are missing. And there are hundreds. This gentleman by the name of mesa rosato, has been missing since tuesday. His family and friends are desperate to find him. And sadly, that is what many families are going through now in terms of progress. There is some progress. There was a huge donation to wifi. Trucks were donated so people can start using their cell phones. And also to charge them and also power has been restored in some areas, but it is still extremely limited. Hey, gina, youve been reporting now there for a few days. Im just curious, you know, is there a story or a moment in time that kind of struck you, the most on friday . When we first got here, we spoke with a lot of the survivors at one of the shelters. And one of them said to me what it was like, which was jumping into the water. She was in the water for eight hours trying to survive. They couldnt see anything because of the embers, the ash and its just amazing that she survived that. I will always remember. And the shots of those cars that are stuck on front street, its just eerie because, you know what happened. Some of those people jumped in the water. Some survived, some some did not. And some were burned alive. And one other interview we had on friday also was from a gentleman who said he ran from the cars, but he saw people sitting in those cars who were obviously not going to survive. President biden says hes considering visiting maui to see firsthand the devastation during a bike ride near his delaware beach home. Mr. Biden was asked by reporters if he would travel to hawaii. He said he was, quote, looking into it. The white house approved a disaster declaration for maui last week. All across the bay area. Right now, new Fundraising Efforts are starting to surface in the wake of this tragedy. Ktvu zac sos spoke with some of the people behind those campaigns today. To most hungry festival goers at outside land sunday, jason raff and likely just another chef blending in with the long line of vendors serving up tasty bites. But for those whove asked him how his weeks been going, there was no warning. Ruffin still haunted by what he saw outside his home tuesday, 2000 miles away in lahaina. I was with my girlfriend and we were sitting upstairs watching the hurricane winds blow roofs off of buildings and then suddenly we saw that there was some smoke accumulating about a half mile away, his home gone, his restaurant decimated. I only had time to pack up one backpack. This current shirt my friend gave me wearing that one outfit. The part owner of Mission Street burger spending the day flipping sliders with a Singular Mission to raise relief funds for the victims of the maui wildfires. And he says hes just Getting Started rafting. Who also founded the chef collective, a nonprofit to address food insecurity. Now planning a string of other fundraisers with his friends in the culinary world. This is going to be like im saying, not just weeks long efforts this month long, year long efforts, ruffins efforts just one example of a growing bay area effort to aid in mauis recovery. Doing our first load ready to go. A honolulu team connected with food pantry hope hanger and Mountain View busy delivering food to shelters near lahaina. We were able to get funds over to them and then theyre deploying the team out as well. So far, the group raising more than 7,500 with an eye towards the rebuild effort. The reality is reconstruction is going to take many, many years. And so what were doing right now is identifying local families that we can come around as were raising funds to really get them set up. Well and in San Francisco, co workers from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union busi stuffing a shipping container full of donations. Ive had people come up crying and in pain because they have family members and friends from hawaii. From maui. Exactly but many stopping by with no connection to the island at all. Simply pained by the images on the news for these volunteers seeing their donation , it gives me hope in humanity, honestly. Though Ohana Dance Group has organized a rummage sale fundraiser for their upcoming open house, theyll be selling hula tools, leis and dresses 100 of the proceeds will go to the Hawaii Community foundations maui strong fund. Initially, this was something that we established to raise funds to take our students back to the islands. But now weve kind of pivoted, you know, last minute, and we want to do what we can to support our loved ones and our family out there. Youre a tiny island chain in the middle of the pacific, but we have you as much as we can do. Were going to do the dance groups. The body of a woman has been found near the intersection of fulton street and 22nd avenue. The Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office says human remains have been found by people who are looking for missing. Saratoga teenager catherine schneider. Authorities say the remains were found near Castle Rock State Park yesterday , the same area where her car was found. Schneider was last seen at her home on july 5th. The medical examiner is working to confirm the identity of the human remains. Firefighters quickly got control of multiple fires this weekend. The flames were spotted in a number of cities across the bay area. A small brush fire started this afternoon northeast of sonoma. Firefighters say it burned less than an acre. No reports of any damage to structures in the cause is not yet known. And cal fire also knocked down a vegetation fire in Alameda County just last night. Ktvu is Bailey Ocarroll spoke with firefighters who say they are working to be prepared as we warm up once again later this week. This was the scene last night near livermore. Fire crews battled a vegetation fire in unincorporated Alameda County along Collier Canyon road. No one was hurt and there was no damage. Cal fire says this is a reminder to stay vigilant. We dont want to use the calm and mild conditions that weve experienced this year so far as a kind of false reading on the vulnerability that were actually in. Jonathan cox with cal fire said theyre already preparing for what could be a dangerous week for fires in the bay area. We dispatch resources based on the danger for that that exact moment. Our priority is to keep all fires or 95 of the fires at ten acres or less. And that really comes down to an aggressive initial attack. Cal fire says they use a two pronged approach to fight fires. We can bring in additional staffing based on the conditions. So as we start to look at areas that are going to have lightning or extreme heat or potentially wind, we will staff Additional Resources in those locations. They also use a strong initial attack utilizing californias fire air force, which is the largest in the world, to attack the flames from above and back staff to ensure all local Fire Departments remain fully staffed at all times. But cox says weather conditions can create perfect storms for large, dangerous fires. Firefighting is very ineffective when youre up against 80 mile an hour winds and really at that point its just a Mass Evacuation until we get substantial rain this fall and winter, the fire conditions are elevated across the state. Cox told me there are some things that you can do to make sure that youre ready for fire. Season number one is to have an evacuation plan in place for you and your family. Number two is to have proper Defensible Space around your property and number three is to get out early when those evacuations are given in the newsroom, im Bailey Ocarroll, ktvu fox two news. Officials say about ten acres burned. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Grizzly flat residents are still on a long road to recovery following the caldor fire, many people were uninsured and denied federal aid from fema. Reporter lisa mitri talked with residents about their challenges in rebuilding. My familys been up here over a hundred years. It was beautiful. It was just all for us. Monday marks two years since the caldor fire sparked in el dorado county. A little fire over at olmo ranch on the 14th, which was a saturday. Then a date burned into the memories of many in Grizzly Flats. The start of something that would change their lives as things progressed over the next couple of days, ash started coming in like snow in about 1130. The sheriff came by and said we had to leave. So it was basically grab what can and which wasnt much so here we are. R. W. Mcneil, everybody up here knows me as mac and his girlfriend, kathy adams. These are art pieces from stuff that was recovered from the fire, didnt have insurance. It was an affordable. And they lost their two story house. And even two years later, the old grizzly is not coming back. This is where the local post office once stood. And while signs point just up the road to walt tyler elementary school, its just an empty lot, but overlooks the hillsides. You will see construction underway as some do work to rebuild. For mac, though , trying to do any building up here is just more trouble than its worth. Hes not sure what hes going to do. Theres a bunch of us in this position. Thats why i now call this the Grizzly Flats trailer park. While the landscape may be forever changed, the people in this tight knit community are still a constant support for one another. In spite of what you see here. I love the people and i want to stay here. I hope that were able to do that, though we dont have resources to rebuild at this time. Mac says hes joined several other caldor fire survivors in filing claims for damages against the us forest service, accusing that federal agency of failing to protect the community of Grizzly Flats if those claims get denied, then they could sue. These are the highs, highs tomorrow are going to follow suit with a little more humidity. You probably feel it out there. Now. These clouds are surface clouds of fog and low cloud at the coast and pushing into the bay and then theres the high clouds coming in off the sierra nevada, which has delivered us with some humidity and a few light sprinkle showers and even a report of a thundershower or at least doppler reported radar thundershower out by the Fairfield Area a couple of hours ago. Current temperatures, there they are. And heres a live camera shot. Looks nice out there. You cant see the fog. Its right at the coast and its just pushing through the gate. Heres that activity i was talking about coming from west or east to west. It was aggressive, much more aggressive about 3 or 4 hours ago when it was up in the sierra nevada, up on the west slope. And then it kind of pushed off out. You can see the lightning strikes early and then it pushes out towards us and loses fuel or loses energy as the day gets longer and the sun angle changes and you dont get the convective warming that you would expect to get a big storm. And so these things are dying down. Thats what im trying to say. But you can see we do have a scattered shower kind of in marin county right now. No report of thunder and lightning there, but but just enough to set us up with the chance of a scattered shower right now in san rafael, perhaps a scattered shower. Richmond a scattered shower, be real short lived. It shouldnt be a big deal. Barely wet the road. At least thats what im hearing. But it does. It does exist into the evening hours. The forecast for tomorrow, the clouds. You see the higher clouds coming from east to west. So thats the humidity underneath it. Temperatures are going to be in the 80s, 90s and even low 100 in those inland bay valleys. So tomorrow is a lot like today, except some of those high clouds and higher humidity. So if it felt hot today, its going to feel even more so tomorrow, at least with the humidity, 100 degrees potentially in antioch 99 degrees in fairfield and 99 in livermore. The five day forecast, the top tier numbers represents the hottest inland valleys. But notice the middle tier, thats the sort of the bay. Thats fremont. Thats san jose. Thats redwood city. Mid 80s. So were going were going to be kind of mild to warm around the bay cool at the coast with the fog. But inland you start getting east a little bit east to concord or even out towards fairfield and vacaville, its going to start getting into the upper 90s. Low 100. Its pretty quickly and that lasts through wednesday with cooling towards thursday, friday and the weekend coming up. So a warm on hot inland. Ill see you back here tomorrow. New video out of michigan tonight shows the moment two pilots ejected from a fighter jet during the finale of the 25th annual thunder over michigan air show this afternoon. The jet crashed around 4 45 p. M. Near some close by apartments. The two people who were ejected were taken to the hospital out of precaution, but no injuries were reported.
