Tonight, civil rights attorneys are focusing in on the Antioch Police department. Theyre now formally asking the Us Department of justice to investigate and take over that Police Department. Ktvu brooks joins us live tonight from antioch. Brooks, what are the attorneys asking for here . Well, ultimately, they want to see an independent monitor, oversee department reform. Civil rights attorneys say for too long, the Antioch Police department has had a pattern in practice of discriminatory, unconstitutional policing. The time has come for major intervention. And this is what im asking in this four page letter to the Us Department of justice, civil rights Attorney John Burris calls for an investigation into the Antioch Police department. All for what he calls a sustained pattern and practice of racial biased policing. The department out of control. Theres no accountability here. And the people who are supposed to control the officers, the sergeants and lieutenants and the captains held they participated from racist and homophobic Text Messages among officers to claims of falsifying reports, illegal searches and beatings of black and brown people. Burris who represents 13 plaintiffs in two major civil lawsuits, says hes interviewed 140 others who have similar stories. You cant get real change with individual cases, but you can do it if you have pattern in practice and you have the amateur of the Us Government saying you are going to do this and you must do it right now. The texting scandal involves at least 45 of the 100 antioch officers. Dozens have been suspended. Some messages contain threats against mayor lamar thorpe and recently retired police chief steven ford. But the Antioch Police Officers Association maintains thats not reflective of the majority and its really unfair to smear the very fine officers of this department with the bad statements, conduct and actions of a few. While the po is not against a fair federal investigation, its attorney denounces the idea of federal oversight as we dont want to see the limited Financial Resources of antioch through to a single individual like oakland has been doing for two decades without really improving the delivery of effective professional Police Services to the community. Still civil rights attorneys argue that command staff either supported bad behavior or turned a blind eye, making it necessary, they say, for an independent monitor to oversee reforms. Antiochs mayor says he is open to an investigation by the feds and says hes also open to having a federal monitor oversee Key Department reforms, live in antioch, brooks jarocz ktvu fox two news a story we will continue to follow. Brooks thank you. Attorneys for former President Trump responded today to a request by special counsel jack smith for a protective order in a filing, mr. I understand and appreciate the safety that Autonomous Vehicles can bring to the table in terms of no drunk drivers, no speeding , all of that kind of stuff. However they are still not ready for prime time because of how they have impacted our operations. Waymo and cruise both site safety stats saying their vehicles are safe. Cruise, avs have now driven over 3 million miles safely, the vast majority of which go unnoticed. But the company say the number of stopped Autonomous Cars is trending downward and that every instance is an opportune city to learn how to do better. Where theres an issue and the interaction does not go as well as it could. We were quickly with feedback from First Responders to implement improvements outside before the hearing. Those opposed to Autonomous Vehicles like taxi driver Matthew Sutter held their own rally. He says expanding the number of Autonomous Vehicles on the roads would take away from his livelihood based on what he calls unproven technology. He says taxi drivers are already making half of what they did in 2010, and thats after he paid a quarter of 1 million for his taxi medallion. Parental leave and more staffing. Mayor matt mahan says in order to meet those demands, the city council would have to make cuts in other areas from a mayor and an administration constantly preaching back to basics approach. Everyone seems really excited. Even with that increased salary, osd is having a hard time recruiting. Theyre starting the year with 65 vacant teacher positions. Were also keeping in mind, you know, the fact that we are in a pretty significant Staffing Shortage as a field and education. Weve been making contingency plans all throughout the summer, anticipating that we would have some schools where we wouldnt have the teacher present the first day. We also asked the superintend about declining enrollment, a budget document from the districts chief Business Officer earlier this year said the district estimates a nearly 11 drop in Elementary School enrollment this year compared to the 2018 2019 school year. Almost all the outbreaks we see are related to the bacteria living in water and the water, therefore is contaminated. The spa already faces one huge problem. Li permission to even be a spa. This facility did not have a health permit. County supervisor john gioia says that violates the law for the purpose of getting a permit is so that the facility is inspected on a regular basis to make sure that its being operated in a safe and healthy manner for the spa owners. Theres a lot at stake in the laboratorys findings. They range from violations of the county health code to huge liability to the deceaseds families. Even potential criminal liability. This spa may not be the only such unpermitted spa i have asked the Health Department to investigate and identify any other potential unpermitted spas in the county. After months of declining case numbers , covid 19 could be making a comeback in parts of the us. According to the cdc, more than 8000 people were hospitalized with the virus during the week ending july 22nd. Its a 12 increase from the week prior and the biggest spike in admissions this year. But Health Experts say it is an improvement from this time last year, when more than 44,000 people were hospitalized. This is actually not due to a new variant of concern. This is still the same circulating variants weve had since the beginning of 2023. Cdc data show folks in the northeast and south are seeing the most positive covid tests. Public Health Officials blame the spike on an increase in summer travel, as well as a massive heat wave thats driven many people indoors. They also say a drop in mitigation efforts can make the virus difficult to contain. Really, nobody is wearing a mask at this point. Nobody is testing when they have symptoms.
