Its july 7th. Steve paulsons right here so warmer today for some folks cooler tomorrow about the same as yesterday. Maybe down a little bit then much cooler tomorrow, no doubt about it. But today, cant find any fog unless youre down towards monterey. Temperatures already pretty mild to warm here. 50s and 60s. So it wont take longer. Theres not much of a breeze yet. Maybe later this afternoon, system moving into the north will start to work its way in here over the next 24 hours for a cooldown. But today its going to start off mild to warm and end up warm to hot for many, although maybe a late breeze here could take a few degrees off some of the sunday hot temperatures 70s, 80s and 90s. And once its aerosolized, people can inhale the bacteria in their lungs and become infected. Those involved in the investigation are even sorting through credit card receipts, appointment books, all in efforts to track down anyone who they say might be at risk. Key point now is, first, trying to locate right individual who use this business. Over the past couple of weeks to ensure that theyre healthy. I think thats really the Public Health goal right now. The centers for Disease Control and prevention say symptoms for legionnaires can include a constant cough, muscle aches, fever, shortness of breath and headaches. One woman says her partner is one of those who passed from his infection. She says its a miracle she herself wasnt infected since they visited the day spa together. I just wanted nobody else to have to go through some of this. What i just dealt with is not anyone or something anyone should go through. Time now is 709. Thats right. You know, and right now, claudine and dave, we do have some slow traffic here at the bay bridge toll plaza, which is going to be busy if you are backed up here. Now, i do see a little improvement. Look, its backing up only to the end of that parking lot. So maybe we are going to have a better than usual monday. After all, as if this clears up, we might have better traffic on the bay bridge. 880 doesnt look all that slow, and neither does 580 through downtown oakland. Look at the east bay though. Westbound 580 near isabel. There was a noninjury crash there and getting out to the Altamont Pass in both directions is just a mess because of a bunch of accidents. So if you know someone or maybe you yourself are going to the Central Valley or someone is coming in, its going to be slow. South bay commute doesnt look all that slow right now. And in the east bay on 880, we have slowing in hayward 710. Lets go back to the desk. Tune into the latest freeway shooting in the east bay. Andre senior here now. You have details of that freeway shooting and how some drivers are reacting to this. Yeah, its happened again here. Dave, investigate. Neighbors say the gunfire on the highway erupted shortly after 2 00 yesterday afternoon. It happened on interstate 580 near grand avenue in san leandro. Chp says a passenger in a car traveling eastbound on the highway was shot and wounded by someone inside of another vehicle. The victim taken to the hospital, but there is no word yet on that victims condition. This was just the latest highway gunfire raising safety concerns among many drivers in the east bay. They say these days an argument with another driver on the freeway can easily escalate into violence. I want to get out of my car and fight some. I pull out a gun on me or something. So its definitely a fear. Even when were driving around, you know, we never know, especially gets late. You know, people on drugs and whatever. One driver from concord says people always need to keep a cool head while behind the wheel and they should be very aware of their surroundings, especially when they are on the freeway. Dont have no road rage right now. Its kind of dangerous. You know, you could literally lose your life just because someone cuts you on the freeway. So far , there have been no arrests tied to this latest freeway shooting on 580 in san leandro. It comes just a few weeks after an eight year old boy was paralyzed after being hit by a stray bullet on that same freeway in oakland. Now, ktvu has an interactive online tool that provides detailed information about bay area freeway shootings dating back to 2021. Its available on our website, ktvu. Com. Back over to you. All right. Thank you, andre. Well, three people are dead after a midair crash involving helicopters who are battling a wildfire. It all happened last night in Riverside County. And reporter Mario Ramirez from our sister station in los angeles is on the scene this morning with exactly what happened. Mario, what can you tell us . Claudine good morning to you. The ntsb now joining in on the search for answers into what happened and still a lot of unanswered questions. You can see part of the crash site here behind me and the hillsides. And we can tell you that this caused a huge response from Riverside County sheriffs chp, the us forest service, and now ntsb investigators. To give you an idea of where this is, about 90 miles east of downtown la, near the ten freeway in cabazon. And take a look at these aerials. You get an idea of the crash site from up above a burn area and youll see what appears to be a helicopter blade on the hillside there. The three who lost their lives. Weve learned on whats described as an observer. Bell helicopter where a Cal Fire Division chief, a cal fire captain and a contracted pilot in that aircraft. The other helicopter, a sikorsky s 64 helicopter, also known as a sky crane with two people on board, was able to land safely. Emergency crews rushing to the area here. This is near apache trail and pipeline avenue, again in cabazon around 720 last night. And those helicopters had been called to a nearby brushfire. The broadway fire that started roughly an hour earlier before spreading to about three acres and we saw a somber procession overnight. Firefighters and police carrying those three bodies to the Riverside County Coroners Office about 25 miles from the crash site. Both of those helicopters, we can tell you, were under contract to work for cal fire. The only two that were assigned to this fire. The helicopter that crashed was observing the fire. And according to fire officials, the sky crane that landed safely may have been conducting water or retardant drops onto those flames. So this morning, we are expecting an update from investigators and those three that were killed in that helicopter crash. They have yet to be named, but just a tragic loss for the community, the Fire Service Community as well. Heavy hearts here in this inland empire community. Well send it back to you. Certainly our thoughts go out to everyone in volved and affected by this. And mario, i can see it is sunny where you are now. I know you guys have had heat there. Obviously and fighting this fire. Do we know about weather or visibility or anything else that might have played a factor in the crash . Well, thats definitely going to be a question that investigators are looking into. And we can tell you that in the area here yesterday when this happened, when gusts were reported at about 25mph, but nothing that these aircraft can handle. Thats what theyre built for. We know that the skies here for the most part, were clear. So no issues there. But there is protocol in place when it does get too windy and those gusts are just too strong. They ground those choppers. So that was not the case here yesterday. But definitely something that investigators will be looking into. Yeah, certainly, as you said, so many questions still at this hour. Mario ramirez from Riverside County, thank you so much for that report. Well, cyclists took over the bay bridge this weekend, shutting it down to traffic temporarily. Video posted to social media yesterday afternoon showing massive crowds of teenagers and young people as you can see, theyre riding their bikes along the bay bridge, some of them doing wheelie ease. Some people who are on the bridge say there were hundreds of people in their estimations, several pro biking groups say they were involved in planning the stunt. Now, we reached out to the chp to find out whether any citations or arrests were made and we are still waiting for response. Wow. All right. Time is 719. Were going right to sal right now. See whats happening on our roads around the bay area now. So. Well, things are getting a little better on the bay bridge right now. Driving into San Francisco. If youre waiting in the oakland side or plan to, you can se backed up to about the end of that parking lot, which is an improvement. And it might even get better as the morning wears on. There have been no major issues here on interstate 880. Now, weve been looking at the east bay commute. 580 is slow coming in off the Altamont Pass because of a crash in isabel. You should be aware of that after that, it looks a pretty decent drive to castro valley, highway four, slow through bay point and 680 is moderate through walnut creek at 720. Lets talk about todays weather. Heres steve thank you sal. All right. There is a little bit of patchy fog on the coast. Thats on the santa cruz coast starting to work its way up the san mateo coast and some coming down now shallow. The depth of it very shallow, but its still going to be warm to hot inland. But i do think well get a little bit of a breeze here. The fog was nonexistent a couple of hours ago. Now its beginning to show itself air loft is warm, 70 to 79 degrees. Ben lomond mountains 79. We had 80 at mount veeder earlier this morning, 73 already in brentwood, 77. Fairfield, rio vista 72. You had 52. 5. Moon bay , a lot of 50s, 60s, but inland temps, theyll still be pushing the upper 90s to near 100. But the water temps for us continue to be cold. Theres warm water south and warm water west but not here. 51 is below average, 54 is about average, but this system dropping into the Pacific Northwest, it is going to knock them down the high here, slow process. But i think it begins today. The cooler days will be tuesday and wednesday by far. I mean, well see a good ten, 15 degree drop on the temps tuesday, probably into wednesday. But today by the coast, i do think a sea breeze kicks in. The fog is working its way up the coast. Thats usually a sure sign. Maybe later today, some bass side locations will also get in on a little more of a westerly breeze. But 60 to 90 on the temps, probably down about 2 or 3 degrees for some, compared to sunday. Much cooler, though, tuesday, wednesday, it looks pretty quiet. The us, the rest of the week. Okay. Thank you, steve. Over to sal now and he is taking a look at where Contra Costa County steve, our friends from antioch and pittsburgh and concord heading west over to concord. You will see some slowing this morning. It is backed up through bay point and part of pittsburgh, but not too slow and its improving now on the 680 freeway between concord and walnut creek. Still a little slow there. The bay bridge backed up to the middle of the parking lot, so thats improved quite a bit. 732 lets get back to the headlines. Okay, sal, thank you. Well, summer is officially over for many oakland families, today is the first day of school for more than 34,000 kids in the Oakland Unified School district. Ali rasmus tells us what school and city leaders are planning today to kick off this new school year. Good morning, ali. Good morning, dave. Parents, students and teachers are hoping for a smooth start to the year. The last school year, youll recall, ended shortly after a ten day long teachers strike. It was resolved in time for the final week of school. Osd teachers now have a new contract there are other important roles the city and the district are trying to fill. O usd has a shortage of crossing guards. The city of oakland pays for those crossing guards. There are about a dozen schools that still dont have enough. The School District spokesperson made a pitch for people to help out and apply for anybody can come and do this work. Its a Pretty Simple job that is, you do a couple of hours in the morning, a couple of hours in the afternoon. Hey, as far as i know from the city of oakland is pretty good. And so a lot of retired folks do this. Other folks who are just looking for some extra money, i think that you can make some pretty good money doing it. So we just want to get the word out, make sure people know that these opportunities are there and we do need the help. Now, there are some other challenges ahead for usd. Like many public School Districts, especially here in the bay area, enrollment is declining. The group from the Cornerstone Christian center was running a free summer camp in west africa, and they were supposed to return last week. But two days before their scheduled departure, a military coup seized power and the border was shut down. Family and friends back home worked hard to secure their return. That was my job. This week was just calling everybody i could call and doing everything that i could do with the help of their elected representatives. The group of eventually received word from the state department. The emails had come with your patience and your humor and be ready. And we waited there for about ten hours more than 24 hours later, they touched down back here in the bay area and set down its airspace again yesterday, which was the deadline set by a group of african countries for the leaders of a military coup to reinstate the countrys democratically elected president. The coup leaders say they closed the airspace due to the threat of intervention from neighboring countries. Our time now, 736 south korea plans to evacuate tens of thousands of boy scouts from a Scout Jamboree in the southern part of that country. About 600 scouts from around the world have suffered heat related illnesses. Its not clear if those scouts include any from the local group that flew to south korea from sfo just two weeks ago. He also went after his former Vice President , mike pence, who resisted his efforts to block certification of the 2020 election. President trump was wrong then, and hes wrong now. I had no right to overturn the election. Trump is asking the judge overseeing the case to recuse herself, saying he wont get a fair trial with the federal judge, tanya chutki. He also says he asked that his case be moved out of washington, d. C. All right. Time now is 738. Lets talk about our roadways on this first day of school. For many south. All right. And things are improving a little bit there. Claudine and dave at the bay bridge. I like what i see here. There is a backup, but its going away rather quickly in the 8 00 hour. It should be light if you do have to drive across the bridge, interstate 880 and oakland looks pretty good. No problems on 680 from san ramon. Doesnt feel a little slowing in pleasanton. 5 to 80, though, is a mess. Coming in from the Altamont Pass in to livermore. Theyre still clearing a crash near isabel. It really has caused a bunch of slow traffic and if you look over here on the left, 880 south through union city in fremont is slow just looks like we got a new crash. 880 heading down toward milpitas near stevenson. Theres a new crash reported there. 739 lets go back to steve who is doing todays weather. Thank you, sal. Well, the first signs of a little pattern change here moving offshore, but down the coast, theres some fog now that still has a ways to go. But once its touched, it starts to make that move. Itll roar in. And there is a little bit down around monterey, santa cruz working its way ever so slowly up santa cruz coast and heading towards the san mateo coast. Now, the basis of that are quite shallow, but still, its a sign of things to come here. I think well get a seabreeze later today. Water temps are doing their part. They continue to favor cold 50, 51, 5154. Thats cold for this time of year. The coolest days will be tuesday and wednesday. Well get a big drop tomorrow. Today that will start off pretty mild to warm. Temperatures inland will still be in the upper 90s to near 100. Were in the 50s, 60s and 70s already. Fairfield 77. I would not be surprised they get close to 100 today. 40s in the mountains. Truckee and South Lake Tahoe 80s and 90s on the desert and then 50s and 60s up and down the coast. But you can see the fog once it starts to make a move like this, its only a matter of time. So the city may warm up pretty rapidly till about noon or one. And then that seabreeze is going to roar in and that system moving in the Pacific Northwest is the cause of whats going to lead to a rather significant cooldown. And a lot of drizzle looks to be in our forecast tuesday into wednesday. So hang in there if you want the cool its on its way. Just may take another day or so 6070s anywhere near the water. I do think, though, the fog starts to make an impact here later and then for sure tomorrow. But inland temps, theyll still be in the 80s and 90s. Tomorrow though, well see those drop off the table then keep them there the rest of the week. You guys all right, steve, thank you. Time is 741 in turkey. Our claudine, lets drive one over to sal castaneda. Hes watching your morning commute. Hows it look, suh . It looks okay. Dave, dave and claudine. I think that right now we still have a bunch of slow traffic, but its improving. Lets go to Contra Costa County and start on highway four. We had a stalled vehicle that made things a little bit worse in the last few minutes on highway four, 680, concord to walnut creek. Some slowing bay bridge is improving. I like what i see. So if youve been waiting to go to the bay bridge, you may want to go now before something happens and changes that. I mean, theres always that risk. This is a look at 880 in oakland. That looks pretty good for 585. 80 is just a mess coming in from the Altamont Pass into livermore. A lot of people are going to be in a kind of a sour mood after experiencing that in their cars. I think. 750 lets go back to steve with todays weather. Sal thank you, sir. Fog is trying. It probably wont make any impact today inland, but coast . I think so. And i think there will be a little bit of a sea breeze. But inland temps will still be pushing the upper 90s for some, but patchy fog is on the coast, some raw down, others starting to work its way up from santa cruz. Ill show you that in a second. Much cooler, though, on tuesday. They are all of those still really warm berkeley lab has dropped a little bit. They were 71, now 69, 79. Ben lomond mountain, mount victor, 78. We need to break that down. That will be tomorrow. But watch the fog just fly down the coast in the last few images here. So still has a ways to go. But coming up from santa cruz, you can see some there now thats pretty patchy and shallow as well. But its a sign of things to come here later this afternoon. I do think well get a seabreeze. Water temps are doing their part. Their cold, 51 to 54. So once you get those 90 and 100 inland, all you need is a little help. And that fog will get a little help from a system coming in tonight, tomorrow and into wednesday. Thats when our temperatures will drop off the table here, 50, 60, 70, fairfields, already 78. Brentwood, 74, rio vista 73, a lot of 60s in here. So we will warm up pretty rapidly here. 50 up in truckee, 44, South Lake Tahoe, 56 in mammoth, 61 in reno and you can see again, these two will probably get their act together here, the fog coming down the coast. And what little is coming up there from santa cruz. But that system kicking in to the Pacific Northwest, thats the leading edge of whats going to lead to a rather significant cooldown, probably a sea breeze later today than for sure on tuesday, wednesday. And drizzle, a lot of drizzle looks to be in the forecast. Not this morning, but by tomorrow morning, i think it will be so mostly clear, teeny bit of fog, but its showing itself now. It will be a make a bigger impact tomorrow. Sunny, slight cooler coast in bay inland temps though still upper 90s but i do expect a breeze to kick in later today. So cooler for all it kicks in tuesday. Wednesday kind of hangs in there the rest of the week. Their day. All right, steve, thank you. Time is 753, about 4500. Ctvs james torres is live in richmond telling us what the latest is from the county Health Officials there. James andre, good morning. We are in front of the zen day spa here in richmond where you see behind me doors are now locked. They have a big closed sign right there written in a notice from the Health Department that says that the facility is closed until further notice. Its been this way since the weekend. And county Officials Say the spa actually did not have the right business or Environmental Health permits to operate. And those leaders are asking anyone at this time who have visited the spa in the last two weeks go get checked out by a doctor and certainly keep notice if he starts to develop any symptoms. Now, even if it does, the sea breeze should kick in here ten hours, 60 already though. Livermore is already 74. Theyll be on their way upper 90s to maybe near 100 i think coast and bay because as fungus roaring down the coast and theres even a little bit down towards santa cruz. So even if we dont get the fog released later today, i think the onshore breeze will begin to kick in. System in the Pacific Northwest is the one thats kind of giving it a little bit of a push here. And thats going to lead to a big drop in those temps tomorrow. Sunny, itll be warm to hot inland. I do think an afternoon breeze, though, does kick in here from any coast in bay, but still 70s, 80s and 90s. All right. Salsa here and he went to the black watch and i did go to the black. I looked in the window there once i yeah that i know now i know what youre talking about because there is no window there. Thank you sir. Its one of those bars. Its. Its a great place, especially if youre a young person looking to have a little fun in los gatos. But i should get to the traffic now on 880. Finally improvement on eight 8680 and also 580 even though theyre all still pretty slow from earlier issues, you know, its improved quite a bit. The bay bridge, its light right now at the toll plaza. Theres a little bit of slowing on the actual bridge. 831 lets get back to the headlines. All right, thanks, sal. Well, in oakland today, today is the first day of school for thousands of kids. Students and teachers are back in the classroom in the Oakland Unified School district. Lets go now to ktvu, ali rasmus live at an Elementary School in oakland to tell us how that first day is going so far. And, ali, its hard for me to wrap my mind around back to school. It came up so fast. Yeah, a short summer, it seems like, for a lot of parents and certainly kids who are starting the school year right now, this is hoover elementary. Were on the grounds here. And just a short time ago, we heard that bell ring. And so now you see some of the students whove got to that wall to check their class assignments. Theyre packing up their bags and theyre heading into class. Weve had a chance to talk to some parents this morning. They say they are optimistic about the school year. We also talked to a teacher, librarian who says that shes also optimistic. Theyre excited for this first day of school. Youll recall the end of the last school year here at usd ended with that ten day teachers strike that was resolved just before the school year ended. And so now theres a new sense of optimism with a pay raise for some of the teachers here that theyre able to maybe have like a better a better start to the school year. And that peace of mind knowing that theyre going to have better pay heading into this school year. We also spoke with the superintendent, osd superintendent kyla johnson trammell. She talked about how there are some teacher vacancies , even though they have teachers, did get a bump in pay. She says thats just a factor of the reality of there just being staffing shortages across the board. Earlier this year, there was a budget director document that estimated osd was going to have an 11 enrollment decline at the Elementary School level. The superintendent says its not quite as high as that, but that all public School Districts across the country are seeing a decline in enrollment. So we just wrapped up speaking with her a short time ago. Kids are heading to class. Parents are dropping them off. Well have all of that in more detail for you coming up in the next hour of mornings on two. Live in oakland, ali rasmus, ktvu fox two news. Well retail studies show back to School Shopping in the us is expected to break records this year. But those same studies also show this is going to be the most expensive School Shopping season ever. The National Retail federation says American Families will spend roughly 41. 5 billion on School Supplies. Thats up from 37 million last year. Many schools are helping families on tight budgets with backpack giveaways and other back to school events. Our goal is to make sure that when kids come to school, they can focus on fun and learning. So were going to try to give them all the basics they need. Well, the study found the parents of elementary and High School Students will spend an average of about 900 on back to School Supplies and ktvu has kicked off our annual back to School Supply drive. You can donate by scanning the qr code on your screen or going to ktvu. Com School Supply drive. This year we partnered with supply bank dawg to make sure Bay Area School kids are prepared for the Upcoming School year. Were hoping to raise 50,000 to help students across the bay area. Well, there was af a church g west african countryf niger. The group from Cornerstone Christian center was running a free summer camp in west africa and they were supposed to return last week. But then two days before their scheduled departure, a military coup seized power, and that border was shut down for family and friends back home. Worked hard to secure their return. That was my job. This week. Was just calling everybody i could call and doing everything that i could do with the help of their elected representatives. The group eventually received word from the state department the emails had come with your patience and your humor and be ready. And we waited there for about ten hours. And then more than 24 hours later, they did touch down back here in the bay area, niger shut down its airspace again yesterday, which was the deadline set by a group of african countries for the leaders of a military coup to reinstate that countrys democratically elected president. Coup leaders say they closed that airspace due to the threat of intervention from neighboring countries. Coming up on 836 right now, south korea plans to evacuate tens of thousands of boy scouts from a jamboree site in the southern part of that country. Thats due to a Tropical Storm thats moving in on the region. And it comes after scouts from the us and england packed up their tents and left the Scout Jamboree due to a record breaking heat wave in south korea, an estimated 600 scouts from around the world have suffered heat related illnesses, but its not clear if those scouts include any from the local group that flew to south korea from sfo two weeks ago. There is a deadline for former president Donald Trumps legal team in federal court. Prosecutors asked the judge overseeing trumps election interference case to issue a protective order limiting what trump can say. And the judge ordered trumps lawyers to respond by 2 p. M. Today to the protective order request. This after trump lashed out at prosecutors and the judge on his social media site. Trump also went after his former Vice President , mike pence, who resisted his efforts to block certification of the 2020 election. President trump was wrong then, and hes wrong now. I had no right to overturn the election. Trump is also asking the judge overseeing the case to recuse herself, writing that he wont get a fair trial with federal judge tanya shukan. And he says he will also ask that his case be moved out of washington, dc. All right. Your time now is 837 and time to talk about the temperatures. It was a hot weekend, steve. And if people were hoping for a cool down today, theyre going have to be patient, right . Unless youre by the coast, i think well get something some cooling there inland one more hot day then itll be cooler tomorrow. Much cooler on tuesday. But inland temps will be in the upper 90s to near 100 coast and bay. Even though its sunny, i do think a sea breeze is kicking in. Fog is flying down the coast, but the air aloft is just too warm. So the fog bank will be shallow, can be dense, fog would be mainly confined to the coast. Its trying, but when youre 73 to 79, in the hills, thats warm air. Thats a big fog bank out there. The key, though, is its out there. Its not on the coast, but its a sign of things to come. And some is trying to work its way patchy from monterey into monterey bay and then santa cruz. But, boy, ill tell you, thats having a hard time even though the water temps are cold, cold, 51, 50, 51, 54. And the water temps are doing their bit all it needs a little bit of help. Itll get it from that system in the Pacific Northwest, we will drop 15 degrees or so, maybe even more than that tomorrow. Yet already fairfield says 81, 78. Brentwood 72. Walnut creek, rio vista 74. San joses already 70. So the stage is set for a warm to hot day. Inland 50 is already up in the mountains. They drop to the mid seconds. But now already the 50s and on the coast, 5060s. But the fog is i mean, once its making an appearance there, even though its not on the coast, the sea breeze is not far away. The tricky forecast is always a city. Its probably around 70, 72. Then i think that seabreeze, aurora, thats a pretty good system for august is moving into the Pacific Northwest. Thats going to lead to our cooldown and a ramp up of not only the fog and low clouds, but drizzle. I think tuesday, tuesday night, wednesday, maybe even into thursday. Theres some pretty decent amounts there, especially on the san mateo coast and in some of the higher elevations. So well go mostly clear in the morning. Teeny bit of fog to the south, sunny, but an afternoon breeze. I should start to kick in coast and bay. So 6070s inland though itll still be 90s upper 90s to maybe near 100 cooler for all tuesday wednesday and well kind of keep it there until the end of the week there. Claudine and andre. Okay thanks steve. Well the cdc says covid hospitalizations have been on the rise since the beginning of july. The reason being is some fog is trying to get its act together and its flying down the coast. But were still seeing 60 to 70 already. And there it is now, theres some around santa cruz thats patchy. Thats a big fog bank offshore, but its a sign of things to come here as a system in the Pacific Northwest digs in. And as it does, its going to give us that onshore breeze. So it probably wont kick in until a little bit later. I think it kicks in coast and bay around noon, early this afternoon. Inland temps will still be upper 90s to near 100 degrees.
