Department. More on the deaths of two people from legionnaires disease from ktvu, fox two news this is morning on two. Good morning to you and welcome to mornings on two on this sunday, august 6th. Im claudine wong. Good morning one and all. Happy sunday. We got some sunshine out there. A lot of sad soccer faces though. Have you got a nice and early. Well get to that in a moment. But first, look at that. Yes, weve got some blue sky overhead which indicates yes, the day ahead. Warm weather. Yes absolutely. How about that . A beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge where just a little bit of fog to start the morning right there over the Marin Headlands. We are enjoying the sunshine this morning, but that is going to mean a warmer day. Giving you a look here at the Current Conditions, widespread 50 in and around the bay area from the north bay in santa rosa at 54 to the south bay in san jose at 58. Meanwhile, San Francisco starting in f 55 and most of us are warmer this morning, up by five degrees in livermore up by five in the north bay of novato. A better look at the Current Conditions and what we can expect for the afternoon as well as the cooldown in the extended forecast coming up. All right, thank you, rosemary. Well, the United States soccer team is out of the womens world cup. This is team usas earliest exit from the tournament ever and the longest womens world cup match in its history is james torres, live at paypal park in san jose, where about 500 fans gathered to watch that Early Morning match and left heartbroken. James. Yeah, thats kind of the reaction a lot of people are having walking out of the stadium here this morning. But they say it was a lot of fun actually being able to catch that game and weird hours of the night here. Likely the only Massive Watch Party in the bay area because with that weird 2 a. M. Start time, a lot of bars in San Francisco, oakland or san jose couldnt hold those watch parties. All those places that normally would because City Ordinances wouldnt allow them to actually have people inside their places at that time. Now lets talk about what we actually saw in the stadium here about 500 people packing the open space, getting a chance to see the game on the big screen at paypal park, home of the san jose earthquakes. Many people stuck around that entire 90 minutes of regulation. Plus the extra 30 minutes of extra time. And then seven rounds of a penalty shootout. And fans here say having that opportunity to watch with other people at those weird hours of the night, it was actually a lot of fun. Supports the team. I mean, you do what you got to do to you know, i wish it was at 7 00, but we didnt make that game. So here we are. Its really fun coming out to a late game like this. Its fun to be surrounded by other people in kind of feels like a dream because were all kind of half asleep. But still watching the game. Lets talk about some of the headlines of this match here. A lot of them actually surrounding some of the stanford alumni. Lets talk about naomi girma first. She had an outstanding performance in the defense preventing swedens offense from having hardly any chances on goal in open play. Then we have that zero zero draw. We go to penalties. Andy sullivan scores usas first penalty kick and then after a few rounds, sophia smith have the chance to win the match for the usa. But she hits her shot wide into sudden death. We go. Kelli ohara subbed in at the absolute, very last minute of the match. She goes for the placement shot and her ball hits off the post. The very last play of the match, swedens lena hartig strikes usa goalkeeper alisson. There makes the save, but the ball pops up, heads back down and just crosses the line. Enough to count the United States loses 5 to 4. And now they are headed home. The usa have always finished in at least a third place of every world cup. Its a tough loss if you ask most fans because they made the necessary changes that many people have critiqued them for. They ended up playing a game that was probably their best of the tournament so far, and now they go home. Sweden moves on to play in the quarterfinals. Theyll face japan coming up this friday. It also means that japan is the only Team Remaining in the tournament who has actually won the world cup before. So its likely frank and claudine, we may see someone winning the world cup in the Womens Division for the first time in history. Were live this morning from paypal park in san jose. Im james torres, ktvu fox two news. All right, james. A tough morning and of course, well have reaction coming from some of the players coming up in about a half an hour. New this morning, a sideshow in antioch ended with a car plunging into a river that was just one of the three crashes that followed that sideshow in a very chaotic night in antioch. Theres some of the aftermath. This was the scene at ninth and g street shortly after 3 00 this morning. Police and firefighters say one car speeding away from the sideshow crashed into the fire hydrant at that intersection. Another speeding car landed in a river and a third ended up in the antioch marina. Apparently at the marina, there was a sideshow that was on earlier in the evening. And when the sideshow was dispersed, the parties left the area and were throughout the city of antioch. At least three people were treated for injuries at a hospital. No word yet on their condition. And there are no reports of any arrests tied to the car crashes or those sideshows. Well the Health Department in Contra Costa County is investigating the deaths of two people who died after contracting legionnaires disease. As ctvs dave devlin tells us, both may have been infected at the same day spa in richmond. This business has been closed pending the investigation. All appointments at zen day spa on san pablo avenue. Now on hold. The most important thing right now is around protecting the public. The richmond business was shut down friday by Contra Costa Health officials after two people died from legionnaires disease. Investigators say both had visited the spa just days prior to the onset of their illnesses. I just wanted nobody else to have to go through some of this. What i just dealt with is not anyone, something anyone should go through. Annabelle olivers partner, ronald, was one of the people who died, and she says he used the business hot tub area before becoming sick. Health Officials Say this is where they believe people came in contact with the disease, causing bacteria. When that water is aerosolized, that is when an individual can inhale it into their lungs. And because theres the potential for additional exposure cases, Health Officials are using Customer Credit card receipts and appointment books to track down clients. The key point now is, first trying to locate right individuals who use this business over the past couple of weeks to ensure that theyre healthy. I think thats really the Public Health goal right now. Theres also a permit issue, so the spa looks like a spa you would have in your backyard in a big bathroom. I mean, theres not toilet facilities and that kind of thing, but it looks like a big room thats tiled. Following an assessment of the facility, Environmental Health inspectors say there are no existing records indicating zen day spa was allowed to install a pool or spa. So you have a business that failed to get a permit. So thats illegal. Wed be really clear. They were whether or not they have a city permit, we dont know that for this for this business. They didnt have a permit for the spa and an and the reason you get a permit, right, is to make sure that you meet state and county health standards. And we do know a third person who visited the spa did test positive for legionnaires, but did make a full recovery. Now in addition to the permit investigation, we also know the city of richmond is looking into the spa buildings hvac system in the newsroom. Dave detailing ktvu fox two news. Time now is 708. And then on tuesday, a notable drop with temperatures back into the mid 80s for inland cities, 70s around the bay, low 60s at the coast. And then we kind of hold steady wednesday and thursday back to you. Well there are some major detours for people making sunday trips this weekend. Why experts say social media is having a strong impact, not necessarily for the better. And the Us Womens National team eliminated in this heartbreaking loss at the world cup. So, yeah, its just it doesnt feel great. A lot of heavy hearts this morning. A shocker at the womens world cup. Were going to break down the us womens loss overnight that knocked them out of the world cup tournament and an elderly man seriously injured when he and his wife are robbed on the front porch of their home in the east bay. What neighbors are saying about that brazen crime from fox two news. This is mornings on to. Well, yesterday at this time, you could not see the Golden Gate Bridge. And today we got a nice early clearing. What a beautiful shot from the sutro tower looking down the golden gate, the Marin Headlands on what looks like a pretty steamy little day coming our way. Very disappointing finish for the us womens world cup soccer team. Ktvu james torres joins us live from paypal park in the south bay where hundreds of fans gathered to watch the longest womens world cup match in history that ended up with a very tough loss to sweden. James a lot of heavy heads today. Yeah, team usa out in the round of 16. The earliest theyve ever been eliminated in world cup history. They usually end up finishing at least third place. So you can imagine a lot of the soccer fans who were out here today heartbroken, walking out of paypal park this morning. But some of the fans we heard from say they had a lot of fun actually being here, being in the open space at weird hours of the day to actually be able to watch this game very, very early this morning. And they say being here with a lot of different people was a good amount of time. United states of america. President kennedy yeah, about 500 fans packed paypal park, home of the san jose earthquakes. Many people there stuck around for that 90 minutes of regulation plus the extra 30 minutes of extra time. Then seven rounds of a penalty shootout that fans here say they loved having that opportunity to watch with other people at weird hours of the night. It was a lot of fun for them, they say. Of course, wishing they had that 7 00 start time that a lot of people predicted the usa would be slotted in. But because they only finished second in their group, they had a go for that three rather midnight start time , 3 a. M. On the east coast. Of course, a lot of headlines surrounding the stanford alumni. We know naomi girma had an outstanding game and sullivan involved as well, taking some of those penalty shootouts, taking that first shot there. Sophia smith missing her shot, missing an opportunity for the usa to seal the deal. Kelli ohara also missing her shot. She was subbing at the very last minute. Tactically to take one of those penalty kicks and then very last play of the match, sweden got a shot in goalkeeper for the usa, allison air. Basically saved that ball pops up pops right back down and just barely passes that line enough to consider it a goal. The usa loses five four on penalty kicks. They are now on their way back home. Now, of course, a lot of fans here especially heartbroken because it seems like team usa did enough to make these changes tactically to have a really good performance in the game, ended up playing arguably their best game of the tournament. But as weve seen, certainly wasnt enough. You need more goals in the back of the net to actually win the game and that just did not happen today. Now sweden will advance. Theyll play a tournament favorites japan and that quarterfinal matchup will happen later this week starting on friday. Were live this morning from san jose. Im james torres, ktvu fox two news. All right. Thank you, james. All right, lets break down this final match for the Us Womens Soccer Team. Certainly it was heartbreaking. It will be the worst finish for the Us Womens Soccer Team in its history there. We want to break down with kylen mills, sports broadcaster with the san jose earthquakes. And i wish i know you are going without sleep. I wish we were celebrating in this moment. Going totally worth it. But i think the us women played well. Thats the hard part. Other other matches were talking about, were talking about how they just didnt didnt come to play. And it was disappointing to watch. This was not that match. To be clear, this was the best match the us women played throughout this entire tournament, which makes the loss so hard to stomach. The us made some tactical adjustments which really helped. They switched to a4231 with emily sonnet starting at the central midfield position alongside a Andy Sullivan. So that was one of the big differences that helped out. So those two are playing at dual sixes, defensive midfield that really helped lock up the middle of the pitch for the United States and then additionally, the players just were connecting better than was better passing. They came out, they looked sharper, there was better connection. They dominated this game. Shots, shots on target possession, corner kicks, every facet you can imagine. The us should have won on paper, so thats what makes it so difficult. But every time we were just talking about this in the break, pks are the worst and youve got to feel for i mean, i was saying partial to sophia smith so young and this is a big stage to be saying i could win this for you in this moment. But those are a mental game. Those pks, the pks are so hard to stomach because it is so mental. All of these players can execute in terms of scoring from the penalty spot. Youre not far out from the goal, but it is a mental chess match between the striker and the goalkeeper and those penalty kick situations. And you have players who are stepping in who had not played a minute of this world cup. Kristie mewis came in and took her penalty, made it. She hadnt touched the ball in this entire tournament. Kelli ohara hardly played just a few moments and goes in and has to take a penalty kick. So that is just an incredibly tough mental situation to be in. One that one slightly over the line. Right. Did you think did you were you thinking, oh, maybe, maybe thats not watching it live it didnt look like it crossed the line when you watched it back. The var review, you see it in slow motion. You do see the ball crosses the plane after it. Initially looked like alyssa nair made the save successfully when you look back at it in review right here, you see that it does completely cross the line, which is just such an unfortunate break. A listener excellent execution in terms of the dive. Guess is the right direction. Gets her hand on it and even after it flips up makes the second save. Its just thats the way that soccer goes. Its a game of inches. She goes now. Exactly so theres no theres no doubt about it when you watch it back. It did cross that just little backspin allowed it to go over the line and cross the plane midair celebration. Im like, oh, lets lets talk about the stats a little bit deeper because we put some of them up because what you were saying, you know, and as were taking an analysis of the game and the match they did, did well, if we can put that up, when we talk about shots, the us 22 shots, sweden, nine shots on target, the us 11, sweden one us at possession like this was in terms of pride like its going to hurt they are they are out and theres just no getting around that but that is something that people are going to say. Why didnt they do that sooner . Its something that the us can carry this momentum forward. Thats the positive to take away. This was their best performance. They dominated in terms of stats and they can take that moving forward and take some of that pride moving ahead because so many of these players are so young. For the us team, 16 players who are newcomers to the world cup throughout these matches, 5 to 6 players in the starting 11, every single match had never played in the world cup before. So for them to be able to walk away with their heads held high and to be able to walk away from this performance in particular saying we played well, unfortunately, a game of inches didnt roll our direction, but still we can hang our hats on that performance. They dominated the number three team in the world, sweden is and they came in and they dominated all facets of the game which is what the stats show. These other stats not as good that we just put up. The us team has never finished eight out of third. They or maybe be 12th this time they only scored about four goals. They they. I think the other stat was that theyve never theyve never scored you know less than than a big number. So it is the reality is and the tough reality though in four years if they want people are people too hard on the us womens team when youre used to winning and you are used to not just winning but dominating and you have players like Megan Rapinoe that were sitting back who are at the end of their their careers. Are we being too hard . One thing that this world cup tells everyone is that the rest of the world has caught up to the us in soccer. Other countries are now putting resources into womens football and its showing there is not that difference in terms of the us being more athletically gifted. Other teams are catching up in terms of the tactical approach, the technical approach, and that tells us that the us has to, you know, there has to be an evolution in terms of the approach for the Womens National team. There was some frustration throughout the tournament that more subs werent being made more tactical adjustments werent being made, and thats something the us is going to have to go back and take a hard look in the mirror and try to figure out what adjustments could have been made, if any, and also what changes can be made from an Institution Level to help raise the bar for the Us Womens National team because the gap is closed, its very apparent now other countries are investing in womens soccer and its showing in terms of now this being an incredibly competitive tournament. So many countries coming in first wins, first goals and advancing some of the powerhouses being eliminated. Even in the group stage germany with an early exit. It was so the womens football scene is now much more competitive than its ever been, which is exciting. What that means, the us has to really look and figure out how do we take steps forward in terms of making our players more technical and tactically sound than our opponents, which just wasnt the case in this world cup. Heartbreaking wake up call. But we look ahead. All right. Thanks so much for your insight. I appreciate it. Yeah, thanks for having me. Heartbreak break, big sigh. You had a long night. I think we all did. But some great, great commentary there. Okay. It is 739. Happening now, caltrans says round two of the interstate 80 shutdown excuse me is right on schedule this weekend. Once again, eastbound 80 is closed from highway four at hercules to come and skyway at crockett for a repaving project. The detour takes you on highway four east to 680 northbound. Eventually youll rejoin 80. In fairfield, drivers can use 780 westbound off 680 to get to benicia and vallejo. Coming up, crews are working around the clock to repave that roadway in an effort to give drivers a smoother ride. The eastbound lanes are scheduled to reopen at 5 00 tomorrow morning. Caltrans has some specific traffic tips for drivers leaving the east bay this morning. Folks who are living in oakland, berkeley, in the east bay like hayward, really great detours. You can take highway 24 up to six, northbound 680. That will divert you onto eastbound i80 in the fairfield area. If youre traveling along hayward, pleasanton, dublin, youre trying to go to sacramento. A good way is to take interstate 580 all the way to 205 and i5. This is the second week in caltrans has shut down that stretch of interstate 80. There will be one more closure. The eastbound lanes in two weeks. The weekend of august 18th, the westbound lanes will then be closed for the very same repaving project during the labor day weekend. Bart riders in the east bay should expect some delays today as well. For the third sunday in a row, bart will have to singletrack between Pleasant Hill and concord to work on trees that could impact the track. Its the last weekend of service limitations. Bart says people on the yellow line should expect about ten minute delays through that part of Contra Costa County. Now coming up at 741, a sinkhole in alameda causing some major problems for residents for the second time in just a matter of days. Beloved grandma and grandpa, as theyre known to neighbors. Shes 78. Hes 86, attacked on their front porch. The assault happened quick. Two young males hop out of a car, grab her small purse, push them down right in front of their door. The elderly couple married for decades. Neighbors who care dearly for them and each other. Our elderly neighbors were assaulted and attempt to steal their personal belongings right on their front porch, on their front porch. 14 stitches. Yeah you cant recognize this because of the swelling coming together, sharing how they feel violated, sad alarm and what theyre doing after this vicious assault coming together as a community to protect ourselves and continue to build that community that neighborhood, support, uniting and rejecting fear. I found grandmas missing purse the morning after the assault. Sitting in the middle of a street in east oakland after work, i went to the address listed on the id still inside the bag, the neighbors happy to see me, even though grandmas iphone was gone. Some hard to replace items still in the small handbag. We have a National Night out every night. Yeah, like very. Youre all actually friends or family. As we will saw, well above average, even hitting 100 degrees for some a better look at this microclimate forecast for you and the cooldown that begins tomorrow. Coming up. Well, this morning, us soccer fans might be trying to figure out how it all ended so quickly. The womens team has its earliest exit from world cup play ever. Ktvu james torres live at paypal in san jose where hundreds of fans gathered. It was a very early start to the game. It was over a night and still you had hundreds there. James yeah, overnight especially long and some weird hours to get up and deal with, but hundreds of fans did it right here at paypal park and boy, are they walking away, going home, feeling pretty heartbroken after seeing that game. But they say having that community, that sense of community being at the stadium in this open space, watching the match on some big screens, it was actually a lot of fun. And probably the only Massive Watch Party happening overnight because with that 2 a. M. Start time bars and other normal sets of watch parties werent able to happen. Sports, the team. I mean, its you do what you got to do to you know i wish it was at 7 00 but we didnt make that game so here we are. Its really fun coming out to a late game like this. Its fun to be surrounded by other people. It kind of feels like a dream because were all kind of half asleep but still watching the game. Well, hey, depending who you ask that dream turned into a nightmare. 500 fans packed paypal park home with the san jose earthquakes. Many people stick around for that entire 90 minutes of regulation. Plus the 30 minutes of extra time plus the seven rounds of a penalty shootout at the end of it. Usa missed three of its pks. And at swedens final shot, usa goalkeeper alisson or seemed to make the save to keep the hopes alive. But that ball bounced back down, just barely crossed the line. Enough to be considered a goal. Were here for a former cal star, alex. Shs heartbreaking loss. Yeah, just devastated. It feels like a bad dream. And i dont know the team put everything out there tonight. I feel like we dominated, but it doesnt matter. Team usa is out. This is the earliest the nation has ever been eliminated from the womens world cup here. They always usually finish at least third and above. And now with that sweden advance on to the quarterfinals, theyll play tournament favorites. Japan coming up on friday. This loss is specially hard for probably some of these players and these fans because it seemed that a lot of the criticism that the usa was facing as they adjust to that before this game and played arguably their best match of the tournament and certainly was not enough for the world cup will go on without them. Again, that coverage for that next quarter round, the next round, the quarterfinal starts on friday. Well have this morning from san jose, im james torres ktvu fox two news. All right james yes, a tough one. So close well do this morning. We have new information on the Early Morning sideshow in antioch that ended up in three car crashes. This was the scene at ninth and g street shortly after 3 00 this morning. Police say one car is speeding away from the sideshow, crashed into that fire hydrant at an intersection. Two people were injured in that crash and a suspected hit and run driver was arrested. Authorities say another speeding car landed in a river and a third ended up in the antioch marina. So apparently at the marina there was a sideshow that was on earlier in the evening. And when the sideshow was dispersed, the parties left the area and were throughout the city of antioch. And we just received some video of the car that plunged into the river, getting pulled out of the water. Still not clear how many people in all were injured in the three crashes that followed that sideshow. Contra costa county Health Officials are looking for other possible cases of legionnaires spa. Thats after two people who visited the zen day spa in the past few weeks have died and a third was infected but has since recovered. And theyre using credit card receipts and appointment records to see if anyone else was infected. The partner of one of the victims says he used that business hot tub area just days before he got very sick and then died. I just wanted nobody else to have to go through some of this. What i just dealt with is not anyone. Something anyone should go through. Health Officials Say the spa tub looks like the kind youd find in your backyard or in a big bathroom with tile around it. Health inspectors say there are no records at the spa. Ever had a permit for a pool or a spa which has local lawmakers concerned . Do you have a business that failed to get a permit . So thats illegal. Wed be really clear. They were whether or not they have a city permit, we dont know that for this for this business. They didnt have a permit for the spa. And the reason you get a permit, right, is to make sure that you meet state and county health standards. Now, the county is sending inspectors in to see if there are any other issues with the spas, heating, ventilation or air conditioning systems. Anyone who went to the zen day spa use the spa area and has been sick is asked to contact the Contra Costa County Health Department. 906 your time. Well, some bay area lawmakers are pushing back against the proposed plan to raise tolls on bay area bridges. It would raise the cost of tolls by 1. 50 across seven state owned bridges in the bay area for five years. The goal is to increase funding to keep Public Transit agencies afloat. If its passed, the temporary toll hike would take effect in 2024, but now seven house members have written to Governor Newsom with concerns about the cost charging more people who dont have money to spend and dont have options is not the only way to approach it. Maybe what we have to do. But lets get these questions answered in a thoughtful way before we do it. State senator scott wiener, who authored the proposed toll hikes as any transit cuts, would also hurt low income people. He said the lawmakers letter, quote, suggests no solution to this very real problem and instead simply opposes the only solution on the table. 908 lets talk about the Golden Gate Bridge. You can see it today. You can see just about everything today. Its beautiful. Yeah. So heres another beautiful view we are joining, joined by sunshine along the coastline, inside the bay, just a little bit of patchy fog and thats really about it. We have good visibility across the region, not dealing with the patchy dense fog we had yesterday morning at Half Moon Bay with visibility there about three miles or so. So if you are thinking about heading out, taking a cruise along highway one, a little bit of haze, a little bit of fog, but not much in the onshore breeze. Very, very weak still through the delta, ten miles per hour. So not going to bring any relief to us. Welcome to the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad in los gatos, one of the few nonprofit units of its kind, though a lot of the other ones in the area are private operations, privately owned, not for profit things that work to keep themselves afloat. We rely entirely on donations, on tickets, sales to kind of help keep us afloat. This railroad was born out of a love of trains and community. It was back in the 1940s when billy jones found this number two train in a scrap yard and saved it. And then created something everyone could enjoy. He loved trains, so he actually worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for his entire career. So he grew up working with trains and having the opportunity to run on a small engine on his property was something that appealed to him. He also just had a general love and care for the community. So he wouldnt charge for tickets, any donations that would come in outside of just general maintenance cost. He would donate to local charities. It became a part of the fabric of los gatos, and jones made sure it stayed. We actually have a photo of billy jones and walt disney. Were actually friends to the point where walt wanted the number two engine to operate in disneyland. Originally before billy convinced and encouraged him to get his own engine so that it would have its own history rather than erasing the history of the number two. After he died in 1968, a group of businessmen came together to make sure his legacy endured and moved the train here to oak meadow park. Today the tradition continues. What are we going to go on . Did it come in here since his daddy was his age . I liked it. And then. And while its not free anymore, the railroad says prices are kept as low as possible. Just 3 gets you a seat. It gets you a ride past Los Gatos Creek and through the 12 acre park. We never really went outside outside of and say, and now i live in Mountain View with my family and i found this place and my boys. I have three boys. They love the train. 3 will also get you on the bill mason carousel built in 1915, it joined the railroad in 1991 and beckons you to find that special horse. It was like it had blond hair. It was the color white. And it like had a flowers and stuff. The carousel. And this fleet of trains have a history, but so do the people who care for them. The High School Kids who are your crossing guards and conductors, all love all volunteers like cortland, who do whatever is needed. I like pretty much everything. And ever since i was like 9 or 10, ive been really into trains. Ive been coming here since i was like probably a toddler. I do like any kind of like job that doug wants me to do. Like i, i scrape rocks out of the ties i work on the roofs sometimes and people like kelly lok, who started here as a teenager looking for a summer job and ended up board president climbing the hill is the most challenging, which i really enjoy the challenge, especially with this locomotive in 1970, i started training on the number two engine and became an engineer on the railroad. In august of 1970. Stop it. So ive been an engineer here for 53 years. Wow so there you go. There still. Im still trying to get it right. And i will continue doing it until they either kick me out or i get it right. That was a fun day. That was a fun day. Its a great piece. Yeah, its tucked in that little park. So it really i mean, theres so many things to do in the park. Its beautiful. And their food is cheap too. So everythings really affordable, which i think is really hard to find these days. Bucks. Youre like, take your kids 10, gets three kids on the on the train carousels next door and you go on that for three bucks and then get a burger or a hot dog. And i grew up here, you know, you did. And i had never been to los gatos on my way to santa cruz, always saw the exit. I had a ball down there. These are the little hidden gems, rosemary, the hidden gems, i think, which inspires me.
