Grammy Award Winning singer lizzo responding to a lawsuit filed by three of her former dancers. The dancers claim they were regularly subjected to a hostile work environment, including instances of alleged fat shaming sexual harassment, assault and discrimination. In a statement, lizzo said in part, quote, these last few days have been gut wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing. Usually i choose not to respond to false allegations, but these are as unbelievable as they sound and to outrageous to not be addressed, end quote. Earlier we spoke with tmzs harvey levin. He says a recent video is surfaced of one of the former dancers saying nothing but great things about lizzo. One of the women is on video. Her name is ariana davis. And she is singing lizzos praises and saying how she would like to be like lizzo. She calls her the queen and she says that it has been a beautiful, wonderful journey. So it is complete different from what shes alleging now. The dancers also allege instances of religious and racial harassment, disability discrimination and even false imprisonment. Lizzo says all of the allegations are false. All right. We have a preview now of an upcoming episode of sports focus. And we talked with the cif 2023 male scholar, athlete of the year. Thats just one of many titles that hes earned. Yeah he is a graduate of San Ramon Valley high school. He is now preparing to start his freshman year at uc davis, playing for the mens water polo team. Heres part of my conversation with tim kerr, who says he was inspired to play this sport as a kid because of his favorite superhero, aquaman. One day i was like, this water polo thing. What is it . You know, i want to i want to check it out. So i was able to sneak over to one of their practices and watch, and that was around the same age that, you know, i really liked superheroes and aquaman being a favorite. And so when i was watching, i was seeing these kids and swimming. Youre used to people just swimming in Straight Lines really fast, right . But in water pool, you need to be super mobile moving around. And so these people were sprinting up and down fast. Theyre getting their up to theyre like theyre out of the water. Theyre throwing the ball 30, 40 miles an hour. I was like, whoa, if i want to be like aquaman, this is what i need to be able to do. It so thats kind of where the love started. Ive been playing water polo since i was like seven years old. Ive always been super competitive and ive loved it a bunch. And so id say when i got to the age of around like 13 or 14 years old and i started playing up with some of the High School Kids and stuff, i started to see like, okay, like playing in college. Thats something thats a possibility for me. What is it about the game that you love . So water polo is a sport. Its a really hard sport. You know, we play in these 25 yard pools. You cant touch the bottom. Youre swimming, fighting for position constantly. And something that i really appreciate about water polo is that compared to a sport like basketball, for example, where youre super mobile in the water, the ball is going to move much faster than you are. So you need to make sure that youre ready for what position you need to be in by the time the ball gets there. So you need to be thinking ahead what is your role with the Special Olympics . How did you get involved and what kind of work do you do . So i originally got involved because when i was around in middle school, i was part of this National Charity organization that has a local chapter in my area called boys team charity, and it helps young boys find philanthropies like volunteer with different philanthropies that they can find a niche that they want to make a specific impact in. So one day i signed up for a Special Olympics and i absolutely loved it because the kids it was a track and field event and the kids were so competitive, so passionate trash talking each other about whose shoes were faster celebrating every time they finished and i saw these kids and i thought like, wow, like if i want to get to where i want to be as an athlete, i need to have the same confidence and passion that these kids do. And so that inspired me to really help them. And help expand the opportunities they have to compete in sports. What are your goals for your College Career and beyond . What is what are your hopes for the future . Gotcha. So for college, im entering as an Electrical Engineering major, and my goal with that obviously is to complete it and go become an electrical engineer. And its a tall task, but its something im really excited for because discipline and hard work, anythings possible. And water polo wise, of course, the goal we just went into a new conference, the big west conference, and the goal is for us to go become conference champs and then punch through and when the ncaa championship, what kind of message would you give to kids who are watching this . Maybe water polo, something theyd like to try or theyre just kind of not sure if they want to try sports in general. Do you have a message for kids . Um yeah. So like for me, sports or something that its so deeply important to me because a lot of the best friend , my best friends that ive made have come through sports because going and doing hard stuff like that sort of experience brings people together and on top of it, it teaches you what youre capable of so that when you go want to do other things that arent sports like i want to go be an engineer, it gives me that confidence knowing i can do hard things and it really inspires me. We wished him all the best in his future. Also, the as will. Their future is a little bit uncertain. Coming up, were going to talk live to a local expert, a reporter in vegas. Nagel is accused of posing as an Undercover Police officer and kidnaping his victim in seattle on july 15th. He reportedly also lived in antioch, where he was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor. Youre watching ktvu. Plus tonight at 730. And we turn now to the latest on the oakland as planned move to las vegas, nevada lawmakers, of course, approved that deal to build a new ballpark on the site where the Tropicana Hotel now sits. And now the owners of that hotel are weighing in on the as stadium plans. According to the nevada independent executives from ballys said during an Earnings Call today that the future of the tropicana is in a Holding Pattern as they wait to see whether Major League Baseball owners will approve the teams relocation. That vote by the owners is expected sometime before the end of the year. For more on these latest developments, were joined by tabitha mueller, reporter with the nevada independent. Tabitha thanks so much for joining us. First off, ballys plan to demolish the tropicana here to build this new ballpark is something weve already known. But how is the company trying to weigh the timing on this with so much still up in the air about the relocation bid . So i think that right now were all just waiting on the relocation decision from Major League Baseball. Right. All of the it requires 75 of the 30 team owners to agree to the relocation. But once that happens, then we might get more details and we can move forward. I think that one of the key things to keep track of here is that right now with the company says this has been good for business for them, but but once again, were just waiting on that final decision and were also still waiting to sort of get a better sense of what the ballpark, assuming it does get built there at that site where the Tropicana Hotel is right now, assuming it does get built. Im sure you follow these developments. Just last week, the oakland as came out and said, you remember the renderings that we put out initially when we were we were working to get this deal passed in nevada. Well, forget about those renderings, because those arent actually going to work at that site. Thats just nine acres. Are we getting an idea of how the design for this ballpark is likely to change here as we move forward in this process . So i think were still waiting for some of those details. But what weve heard is that theres very little room for any margin of error right. There is a very, very limited span. And the bill was located specifically to this site. Right. They cant just take it and go anywhere else in las vegas. So thats something that we are watching pretty closely. My colleagues over at the nevada independent, what can you say just about the sense that youre getting from people in the community . Do they even want the team to move to vegas . Are people excited about this . I think that obviously theres always a mixed reaction, right . Las vegas has kind of portrayed itself as the Sports Capital right now. Right. We have the formula one race is coming. Theres a lot of things happening. I think whats really interesting, though, is that the oakland as have been very, very silent. What after the legislative session. Right. They didnt even show up for the bill signing. And so im just curious if thats silence is because of whats happening with the commission on or if its just kind of waiting for things to really get going. And thats kind of what im paying attention to. All right. Finally, lets ask you here about the funding component to all this, because we know that this new ballpark, its supposed to be a 1. 5 billion project. There at the tropicana site. We obviously have followed the developments. Lawmakers in nevada have committed about 380 million in public funds to the project. Are we getting a clearer sense at this point about where the rest of the money is going to come from . So some of thats through bonding. Some of its through the public financing. A lot of these details are still going to be formalized once we get the permission. If that happens from the Major League Baseball. Right. And the other thing that i think is important is the stadium authority, which is the one kind of oversees this. They have some upcoming meetings and thats where i think well start to see some more details emerge. All right. Tabatha mueller with the nevada independent. We appreciate your time coming on the show. Of course. Thanks for having me. And you can follow the latest developments by heading to our website, ktvu. Com. A San Francisco woman is working to reunite stolen baggage with its rightful owners. Ktvu Christien Kafton reports tonight from the city with more on this story of selflessness. Its a sight no sightseer wants to see broken windows on their rental car luggage and baggage gone after thieves go through the bags. Theyre often ditched elsewhere in the city with no way for the victim to know where to look. Dozens of those bags have found their way through. Andrea carla michaels, San Francisco apartment. Part do gooder, part sleuth michael says she inspects each bag. She finds for clues about the owner. So i look at i mean, theres receipts. She estimates that over the years shes reunited about 50 people with their luggage. I want to be able to still show people for every person who smashes the window that there are 100 people who will get it back to them. Michaels has already made a reputation for herself, sourcing food that restaurants are getting rid of and getting it to the needy. She says thats what takes her up and down alleyways in San Francisco, where she finds a lot of the lost luggage. And its not the folks in the alleys that did the smash and grabs, but but the gangs or the total miscreants. Michael says the thieves take the valuables and leave the rest of the items in the bag items she uses to track down the rightful owner. Theres always a medication bottle in there and then ill call that pharmacy, or theres a theres a boarding pass. Michael says she remembers finding a marriage certificate for a couple from portugal and using that to help track them down. Like many, she reunites, she says they were initially suspicious they were being conned since theyd already been victimized once, she says, after convincing them of her intent that all changed it gradually turns into their just being unbelievably grateful and happy and sweet and appreciative. Michael says police would be too overwhelmed to go through the seemingly never ending stream of stolen luggage to search for the clues and do the legwork to get it back to the owner, she says. Thats where amateur is. Like her can step up. She says shes launched a website aimed at connecting people whove found luggage with those whove lost it. We have a link to that web page on our web page, ktvu. Just check out our web links in San Francisco. Christien kafton ktvu. This partnership with the chp comes after mayor shengtao asked Governor Newsom for more resources to address the surge in crime in the city. All right. Should be fun. Up next on the seven tonight, new tech nology is making it possible for scientists to get a closer look at hurricanes. Well have a look at the new robotics that are being used after the break the bay area meteorologist mark tamayo got to see exactly how it works in this hangar at the former Naval Air Station in alameda is filled with rich military history. Now it is the headquarters of a company that is making a futuristic splash in hurricane research. Saildrone is making these robotic sailboats that are rigged to collect high quality ocean data. 12 sail drones, the largest fleet ever, are now positioned to literally chase hurricanes in the western atlantic, caribbean and gulf of mexico. Trying to understand whats happening as the hurricanes approaching, as the hurricanes happening and as it passes through at the water level is something that noaa has never been able to achieve before. Mark tyler is the chief operating officer of saildrone, the Company Makes these unmanned surface vehicles that are customized to accomplish Different Research missions. Each of these aquatic drones carries an impressive payload of instruments that can measure an assortment of variables in the air and on the sea. These powerful vehicles get their first taste of salt water right here. Alameda is a great location for this. This location allows us straight access to the lagoon or behind me and the bay so we can do local testing. Three of the different saildrone models were visible in seaplane lagoon. Each has a different design and purpose. They all rely heavily on the sun to power their research mission. The explorer is the smallest saildrone, and that is the model that sails into hurricanes. The complexity of everything from the salinity of the water. How much co2 is being transmitted between air and water, the currents, the wind speeds and the different locations around the world. Im walking at about 2 to 3 miles an hour, and that is the average speed of a saildrone in the ocean. The offshore missions could last for several months and over that time frame, researchers are watching the data in real time. Greg foltz is an oceanographer for the National Oceanic and atmospheric administration. He worked on the first Experimental Mission with saildrone in 2021. The drone came along and heard about it. Yeah, i was really excited. I thought, if we can make this work, if we can get a saildrone into a major hurricane eyewall and get data back and it doesnt get severely damaged and sink, its going to be amazing. And it was amazing. First with Hurricane Sam in september 2021, the onboard camera captured the stunning visuals of the category four storm north of puerto rico. And last year, a saildrone had a rendezvous with another major storm in the atlantic. This footage shows 50 foot waves churned up by hurricane fiona. While the video is exciting, the data is the prize and is fueling research that boosts the understanding of hurricane developing. Were finding some interesting things with the saildrone data, how the waves interact with the winds and can cause changes in that drag effect that slows down the hurricanes winds. And this is where it all happens. Mission control. This is yeah, this is mission control. This is our office. Those are the sail drones out right now. Exactly. Yeah. 36 each one of these little icons represents a vehicle while the robots are out at sea, a team is watching from here. Julia paxton is a director of Mission Management. This is where most of our actually all of our missions are planned from here. So our Mission Management team serves as our group of navigators who collaborate with the customers to get the vehicles where they need to be, essentially planning and then executing. Her team works on various missions that range from seafloor mapping. The carbon uptake near hawaii to the current el nino in the equatorial pacific. There is always a set of eyes on these drones. Pilots are not essentially turning the rudder or adjusting the wing or anything like that. But our our pilots are the humans who are sending the sets of navigation commands. The team is now gearing up for another hurricane mission and they continue to raise the bar. The idea of putting more vehicles out is not only to have a higher likelihood of sale and positioning when the vehicle is in the path of a coming storm, but also to have redundancy as well. So potentially to be sampling different sides of the same storm as a goal. Mark tamayo, ktvu, fox two news. Our next in sports tonight, the story of a former 40 niners.
