The governor visit comes one day after he declared a state of emergency for napa and sonoma counties. The glass fire has grown 8300 acres since yesterday, it has now burned more than 56,000 acres. It is now 5 contained, but a red flag warning does remain in effect, strong wind could complicate the firefight is the concern for firefighters. Tom baker joining us live from the fire zone in napa county, where the impact has been really strong on the small community. The town . Except for the media and First Responders, this is calistoga, a virtual goes down, it has been that way for several days, and of course, recently, and you have First Responders and stuff like that but people arent allowed back in here, and because the fire isnt coming down into these towns a lot of people think the fire isnt so bad, well, we went just a little ways outside of the town of england, but a 44 minute drive from here, 1500 feet up and we could not get a signal out. We want to show you what is going on there. Very close to the center of town. Reporter and wildfire lore and science, where there is a smoke column, you will almost always find a fire at the bottom of it. The current fire in napa county, lots and lots of snow columns, some small, some enormous, as the crow flies, the robert craig winery is only about 2 miles from the center. Here, a fullcourt ground and aerosol has been underway, as helicopters finding an occasional break in the smoke come into drop bucket after bucket after bucket of water, on flaming brush. Firefighters are concerned that if this fire is going to get up into angling, it is going to have to come up through this valley, and they are doing everything humanly possible to keep that from happening. Another major problem, which is this area has already burned once, but now, the hotspots are flaring up, and right next to the hotspot, almost an unlimited amount of burnable fuel. There are fires all over california. But, for now, it appears that the most critical battle is the battle for angling, a battle fully joined as a smoke will allow. One of the biggest problems of course is that it is easy to find fires when theres a smart visible smoke rising but there is so much smoke over the northern napa valley and obviously far beyond that spreading but so much intense smoke right here, you really almost have to drive up on these fires to see them, and then you recognize how back at a bit more about this, and back at 5 00 with a more full report. Ktvu f0x2 news. Tom, thank you. Statewide flex alert is now in effect until 10 00 tonight, tom is worried that todays hot temperatures will put a strain on the states power grid, californians are being asked to voluntarily turn off lights and appliances, to help conserve electricity, and avoid potential rolling power outages. Meteorologist kyla grogan joining us now with a look at the current weather conditions especially up in the fire zone and also kyla in addition to that flex alert we have all that smoke, are spare the air alert has now been extended until at least next thursday. Yeah, actually next tuesday at this point but it would not surprise me if it got extended longer. Right until next tuesday, it has been extended day by day, but now obviously the reality is that we will have a rough night tonight with a lot of snow to deal with right now, that is why that spare the air alert is certainly in full force. Take alive look, this is a shot at sfo where you can barely see it it looks like an almost earlymorning with the fog, but this is not fog, this is smoke. Barely pleasant this morning, this is the air quality out right now, you can see red means unhealthy air, and we have it in santa rosa, in vacaville you can see that air is orange with means mystery issues, seven cisco slipped into unhealthy, livermore and concord as well, it has been a steady decline all day you have to go all the way to santa cruz to find any decent air right now. And, what is happening is, we have got some later wind, this is a look at the peaks right now you can see the numbers are very high but they are starting to invest in from the north and northwest, what that is doing is dragging smoke not just from the glass fire, but also, from the north and august complex fires, and so this is future cast i will show you right now, lets take this forward and you see that smoke being dragged down to the bay, mixing down to the ground, this is friday morning, notice as we move through friday we will start to get some relief at the coast, i think those of you in the east bay will be the last to get some of that relief, pushing him, so i think the worst of it will be the next 24 to 46 hours and then we should see some improvement, here is the forecast for friday spare the air extended through tuesday, unhealthy air in north and east bay, unhealthy for sensitive groups unhealthy for the rest of the day so its going to be a tough one, we are also under a red flag warning, and that is because we have that wind which will be developing tonight, we have low relative humidity out there and so this is for the north and east bay hills and also the Santa Cruz Mountains, so certainly where the glass fire is, but also the other surrounding areas, a quick check in on what is happening near where the fires are right now and you can see we have you know, in and around places like calistoga, and low relative humidity, high temperatures, but the wind is not bad, that is likely not going to hold up at elevation as we get further into the evening. Temperatures with a lid kept on them because we are under heat advisory but all of the smoke is keeping the sun from warming us of the way it might if we had clear skies. However, already seeing that we have some mid90s out there, livermore right now in the upper 90s. So, it looks like we have at least dodged a slight bullet with that, we are expecting temperatures to be in double digits in places like santa rosa today holding in the mid 90s, we will talk more about how long the heat will last and when we can expect better conditions for our firefighters is well. For now send it back to the cen today to provide relief from the heat. A fourth person has died in a large wildfire burning west of reading, the Shasta County Sheriffs Office says this man suffered significant burns, and then later died at the hospital from the injuries. The dog zog fire is burning across Shasta County, officials expect the containment a line around the fire to increase over the next few days. We turn our attention now to the weather obviously, a very tough day for firefighters as they are gearing up to deal with winter this evening about elevation which could cause the fire to expand further and of course hamper their efforts to get containment on it. We are of course dealing with a lot of smoke just about everywhere in the bay today, i want to take you back to when the fire started, that would be last sunday it started off as a 20 acre fire. The glass fire started simply enough, like many others do, but then it could expand very quickly and became by that afternoon 1200 acres, and then bite monday morning, 11,000 acres and now here we sit at 56,000 acres as of this morning. In fact, over 56,000 acres. As we look at it from above, we look at satellite fire detection, you can see it is certainly a formidable fire, we will take you to the area that has been the most active over the last 24 hours which would be near calistoga, like me, st. Helena, and the conditions there right now i not bad. Certainly we have temperatures up in the 90s, but the wind is all below 10 mph, relative humidity look at that in the teens, 14, 17 , so, very dry conditions and we are expecting that wind out of the north northwest to pick up as the evening goes along. So, we have been in this hot pattern, very dry conditions, lots of fuel out there, that is why we are under red flag warning tonight because of the wind, the low relative humidity, and also the temperatures. It is not just by the way for the glass fire area, it is also for all northbay hills and east bay hills, and Santa Cruz Mountains as we go throughout our night tonight. We are also under heat advisory supposed to be just for today, but the National Weather service has extended it until 8 00 p. M. Tomorrow, expecting temperatures a little bit cooler than today, but still, some will be in triple digits tomorrow, that is why they have extended that. The quality not good, youre taking a live look at san jose where the air quality has been sitting at unhealthy levels throughout the day, san jose right now at 94 degrees, santa rosa 91, 83 degrees and seven cisco, 88 in oakland, 97 in livermore and some of these temperatures are lower than we were anticipating today because of the smoke which has been so pervasive and has really kept the sun from coming in. Here is a quick look at that air quality map and again you got to go all the way to santa cruz to find a green dot on the map, here in either unhealthy for sensitive groups which is the orange or unhealthy altogether, in the red areas. Also, you notice the visibility, right . Look at santa rosa, we have a mile and three quarters visibility all of this has to do with the smoke and none of it has to do with of the marine layer which is what we usually look at the map for, so tonight will actually not be cooling off that much, right . I mean, comparatively speaking we will be a little warm, san rafael looking at 72 degrees, we have that smoke with us, and that makes it difficult because that relative humidity doesnt get going, the way we sometimes have the overnight hours and things to go down with the fog moving in, that wont be happening so much, tomorrow still warm out there, for santa rosa expecting 101 degrees, 83 in San Francisco, well abovin m also looking at triple digit heat again. Storm tracker two shows you its been quick pretty quiet as far as marine layer is concerned, but that is not really the story, the story is more on the heat and the smoke, and i talk more when i come back about when we can expect a break from all of it in your extended forecast. Plus, the new surgeon coronavirus cases could be accelerating, as more states continue with reopening plans. Im jonathan seri in atlanta, and i will have details coming up. Back now to the coverage of the glass fire in sonoma counties, with 2100 firefighters on the line right now. This fire has grown 8300 acres since yesterday, and has now burned more than 56,000 acres in total. It is just 5 contained right now, over 26,000 buildings, homes included, and businesses are all threatened right now, flames have already destroyed nearly 250 buildings in both napa and sonoma counties, including 143 homes, and another 144 buildings have also been damaged by the flames. The napa county board of supervisors is considering the ratification of an emergency declaration. The largest portions of fire growth have been to the north and the palisades area, and slowly progressing to the north, yesterday Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency for both napa and sonoma counties but lets get back to tom baker joining us live from napa county with the latest on the fire and of course conditions up there in the fire zone. Tom, that red flag warning went into effect a few hours ago. Are you noticing the wind starting to pick up . What is it doing to the fire . Reporter we are down on the street in calistoga, which is about 300 foot elevation, or Something Like that. Theres not much wind nor would you expect much, i just checked, its in the mid90s here and its only about 21 , so its kind of perfect fire weather but the wind has slowed down. Now, we showed the fire at about 1500 feet, wind up there. Not heavy wind, but it was just before this red flag warning was supposed to go into effect. My guess is, and the only reason we didnt stay up there is because he couldnt get a signal at so we can show you what we saw, but my guess is that the winds are going to be higher up there. Now, whether or not they will be blowtorch wind, nobody knows just yet, but i can tell you that there were a lot of people staged up there, worried about the fact that there is a canyon that leads up towards anglin, and they had trucks posted all around, the little town with a population of 3400, just to make sure that if they have to make a stand, at least as of an hour ago, 5 miles on it from helicopters, no big aircraft because it was too smoky. Does helicopters can see an opportunity to come in and drop some water, and they did that many many times over. We also noticed that there was some wind, where a hotspot situation, and firefighters had to go in and put that out. That is the situation here, across the highway into sonoma towards napa valley, and the calistoga area. There is damage to the roadways, some roadways in the sense of guardrails being burned and things like that. A lot of damage, that is a very important thing, because we saw many many tree branches drop, if that comes down and hits you that wont be good even if you are in a car, that can be a very bad situation. So, a lot of repair work going on, but the main event seems to be starting right now and certainly, we are going to stay here, best tonight and we are going to make sure we come back tomorrow to let you know what is going on but that is what is current. Absolutely. A lot of concern about weather conditions up there in the fire zone, tonight. Tom, thank you. We will have live reports from tom coming up tonight on the news at 5 00 and 6 00. Thank you tom come alive for us in calistoga. Law enforcement agencies are cracking down on looting, 50 additional Sonoma County Sheriff Deputies are being assigned to patrol evacuated areas. Deputies say they arrested five people on tuesday, and two more yesterday for entering places that are supposed to be off limits. Now to Santa Clara County, where firefighters are demanding that the authority of the Los Altos Hills Fire District be removed. They say that audit by the Santa Clara County board of supervisors felt the lust optus Fire District is being mismanaged. They claim the audit found the district is not following regulations on how to use funds for things such as a visit agitation removal and the use of resources. They want the board of supervisors to support the consolidation proposal which would better coordinate fired preparedness and say it is a matter of public safety. You know, they have been mismanaging this Fire Protection district, in the county board of supervisors has the ability to remove the authority, and place it in the hands of the Santa Clara County fire department. The county board of supervisors is set to discuss the audit at their meeting next tuesday. Each week, we are continuing our giving day drive in this week we are highlighting charitable organizations, today we are focusing on the one warm coat organization and their main mission is to get codes to those in need during this upcoming crucial winter month. Joining us today we are joined by president and ceo, medea, thank you so much beth for joining us, this year is a year im sure like many other unlike many others with the winter months fast approaching it seems like there will be a lot of people in need and then you throw in the pandemic, i imagine the need is as great as it has ever been. We have never had a demand for coats and resources like we are seeing this year. We have close to 1000 nonprofit Partner Agencies across 50 states and what we are hearing is that the demand for services is already up in some places by struggling prior to the pandemic are approaching a crisis situation, now, as they continue to be unemployed, possibly struggling with addiction, and, the Colder Weather will bring higher utility bills. So, we want to make sure that we keep everyone sheltered from the elements. People are wondering how can we help out . Obviously in the winter months, the donation drive is to donate coats but today we are focusing on monetary donations, because i would assume that with the pandemic, some of the typical fundraisers ordination drives you have orange taking place. That is exactly right. A lot of fundraisers take place for us in offices and many people are still working remotely. So, that is not going to happen in the same way this year. We are focusing today on dollars, we are really grateful to be included in your giving day program, everyone teller donated warms one person. So people who want to help can make a big impact with any size gift. They will be changing lives for the better. Shelter from the elements is a basic need, just like nourishing food or clean water, and we want to make sure that children, adults, homeless people, Senior Citizens, are all safe this winter. Talk about it directly where the money goes, you say donating one dollar helps one person can explain how that works . Absolutely. Our Coat Drive Program is again across all 50 states, although it was founded in sentences go. So, right there where you are. But, it has grown to where we now have provided close to 6. 6 million coats to children and adults. The way that Program Works is, we have coat drives which happen all across the country, we have had close to 40,000 coat drives since we were founded in 1992. And, those take place every year, ktvu does a wonderful cow drive for us every year, not happening yet, we are looking for monetary donations through giving day, but those coat drives are then matched with nonprofits in their communities. So, as nonprofits represent everything from preschools, for lower income families, to homeless shelters, Senior Citizen centers, and programs for veterans. And then, in terms of you saying this is a basic human need, i couldnt even imagine if somebody has just recently gone through a wildfire, has lost everything, how it could just impact them, just to receive a coat, especially as we approached the winter months. Absolutely. And for children especially, and Senior Citizens, they are more likely to develop hypothermia with only small amount of exposure to the elements. They have small bodies which just cant fight to keep themselves warm and fight infection at the same time. Beth, we appreciate you coming on, president and ceo of the one warm coat organization, you heard her were not collecting coats yet today is about monetary donations, so if you want to do that and make a donation we will put up a graphic year for our viewers, you can donate to one warm coat, just go to ktvu. Com giving day. Beth, thank you so much. It has been a warm day across the state of california, and certainly here in the bay, a little less warm than anticipated which has everything to do with the fact that our air quality is so diminished today. We have had a lot of cloud cover that moved in, but lets start by taking a look at the state of california and where temperatures are at right now, you can see here where all of the reds and pinks are, 90 degrees in san diego right now, 96 in fresno, 95 in sacramento, here, back in the day, you know we are doing better than anticipated, so, 77 in San Francisco, we are expecting it to be about 90 degrees today but again all of that smoke cover is keeping the sun from getting in, 91 in santa rosa and about 81 in san jose. High temperature is in control not just here in the bay but all throughout the state, and we are seeing temperatures across the state that are well above average, that is why we are under a heat advisory, and of course we are also dealing with the smoke and haze and heat, so october has started, very warm and very smoky for us. In fact, our heat advisory has been extended until 8 00 p. M. Tomorrow it was supposed to expire today but tomorrow we are expecting again some inland temperatures to go to triple digits, we are also under a red flag warning which has been extended. This goes until saturday at 6 00 a. M. And it is because as we go throughout the evening we are expecting a northwest flow, to start rolling through and our upper elevations. So, really about 1000 feet and then we have low humidity levels and of course we have warm temperatures which will make it difficult for the firefighters in the glass fire. Just to show you it is not just here in the bay area, you know, it is also north of us and south of us, that we have read flag warnings up today, and for us here it is both where the glass fire is, but also in the north bay, the east bay and the Santa Cruz Mountains. So, any places of elevation in our mountains and hills we are looking out for throughout the night tonight.
