We now find ourselves one week into this fire event, and without question our state has been pushed to its limits. Its really hard for all of us to wrap our heads around the devastation that these fires have caused, and the pain and the suffering that so many oregonians have endured over the past few days. This timelapse footage shows a Product Launch of smoke rolling across the lake in a central part of california. It shows the rapid spread of one of the fires and a satellite photo from the National Weather Service Shows smoke stretching as far east as michigan. There are currently 17,000 firefighters battling more than two dozen wildfires here in california. Most of them in forest land. At least 82 people have now died from the california fires, and nearly 5,000 structures have been destroyed. Tom vacar joins us live with a closer look at what is happening. Tom . Well, this year, the fires in california have already engulfed 3. 3 million acres. Thats the size of 8 of the 9 bay area counties minorious sonoma, but the fires keep growing and growing and growing. Theres been a longstanding job in the Sierra Nevada that severely weakened tens of millions of trees. That stresses them by taxing and ultimately stopping their ability to take on nourishment, damages their immune systems, and their ability to defend themselves from heat, disease, pin and secretary infestation. The 2012, 2015 drought drouth, killed hundreds of millions of treats. Now those trees are starting to fall. Reporter with temperatures inching ever higher, the bark beetle population into consideration the trees, devastating the forests. All of that adds readily burnable future to future fires. Climate change is compounding the issue. Reporter the u. S. Forest service puts the drought and bark beetle tree death toll at 163 million and increasing. Sudden oak death of fungus has already killed off as many as another 10 Million Trees and continues to thrive. Here in the bay area, we have sudden oak death that is increasing in the bay area. Thats having an impact. Reporter and then throw in the human factors. Careless people starting fires, arsonists, and poor forest and Vegetation Management, which has doubled and tripled the number of trees in california over the last century, now dying at a faster rate. Nonetheless, President Trump has scolded california to rake the forest, to reduce wildfire. Threaten dead state of california, 40 million americans that happen to live here in the state of california to defund our efforts on wildfire suppression, because he said we havent raked enough leaves. You cant make that up. Reporter today newsom doubled down on that. One thing is fundamental, 57 of the land in this state is federal forest land. 3 is california. Reporter what the president does not know or fails to acknowledge is that much of the land that has burn ford years and ask burning right now is, in fact, federal land under federal control, consist lint year over year, the amount of federal lands burned is just about half of all of the total acres burned in the state. Bill martin is here now with a look at when we could see the smoke start to clear out. Bill . It should get a lot better by tomorrow. The winds are going to shift around significantly. Today was a little bit better. You might have noticed it. But we do have significant wind shifts coming up as we head into tomorrow afternoon, and by wednesday, i think were in the clear. This is a significant weather system coming off the coast. Its not going to bring rain us to. It will be rain up in oregon and seattle. But it will flush out the atmosphere at all levels with a big southwest wind. Just a peek at the air quality around the area and the state. Its just bad. No way around it. And it will be a little better tomorrow than today, but still it will be in the unhealthy range for many. And a real quick note on Climate Change and forest management, let me tell you a little something, this has become a political football. Its about forest management, about Climate Change, and its about where people build their homes. People in the old days, you look where the Indian Village were, and you look where the missions were, they didnt build them on ridge lines where they could burn. California has built themselves into this urban rural phase that has made it difficult to manage hours. They history of the state of california is fires. We started putting them out about 100 years ago, so the forests do need to be cleaned up, but Climate Change is also cautioning it. Its all of it together. Ive been around a long time, and hate to see these things get muddled. Yeah, the for es need to burn. Thats what they do, and people need to think about where they build. And its just important to do that. Otherwise were going to and the Climate Change is real, dont kid yourself. Okay. Sorry about that little soapbox. Reporter at an ace Hardware Store, they have seen runs on n95 masks, air filters, and air purifiers, which start at about 90, saying these go out as soon as they come in. Weve never sold this many before. And that Hardware Store owners is that all the dirty air can really clog up your a. C. System. We just happened to change our air filter today. And this is a clean air filter, and this is the disgusting thing we pulled out today. And this dirty one was only in our house a few months ago, so you can see what that Hardware Store owner is suggesting people change their air filters now. Okay. You just made me want to run and change all of my air filters. That is an incredible example of just how dirty the air is. Maureen, thanks for that. I hope no one is eating. I apologize. Thanks, julie. No, food example, though, need to clean those filters. [ laughter ] yeah, thank you maureen. Its not exactly school, but its close. That chunk of air is going to be ooh replaced slowly starting tomorrow, and by wednesday should be gone. Now, thats the plan. I know its been dragging on. We have a nice bit of wind at sfo right how, 22 Miles Per Hour at the surface. Okay. So thats tomorrow morning. You see that thats got a general southwesterly trajectory. See that, which way those arrows are going . And then it gets robust on wednesday. That should clear us out. When you look at the model that shows the smoke dispersion, theres no way that is not going to do a massive cleanout. If that wind transpires, and theres no reason to believe it wont. Book this is our south wind producer, that weather system. Its a nicelooking system, too. So the pressure Grade Centers will be such that the winds are going to do a straight on boom like that. And then well see a shift from all of our smoky air to get into this clean april zone. Theyre going to trade spots. Thats the plan. Starts tomorrow. And i think today was a little better, looking at the numbers certainly, and i think wednesday will be significantly better, and i cant tell you how many emails and texts and whatever communications ive had, and its just tough.
