Today pour people were allowed back into areas where evacuation orders have been lifted. Well, some evacuation orders have also been lifted in parts of Santa Cruz County that are out of danger from the zito lightning complex fire. Over 860 homes and other buildings have been destroyed or damaged. A few are in san mateo county, but the majority of are in Santa Cruz County. Amid the progress, a setback overnight. Jesse gary reports that even to the containment increased, so did the size of the fire. Oftentimes a fire is burning a tree trunk or the stem of a shrub, it can follow the fire down the stem into the root system. San jose state fire ecologist said that flames move underground as opposed to along the floor of a burn area. Thursday, as firefighters used controlled burns to limit the supply of fuel, flames from the czu august lightning complex fire went south. Dry brush and roots allowed the fire to spread 1,000 acres. So far it has torched over 82,000 acres across santa cruz and san mateo counties. They urge residents returning home to show caution, since fire down below could weaken footing, leading to injury. This type of fire can be dangerous for firefighters, because if you step on this area and the ground underneath caves in, you can fall into an area that is very hot from fire. It can also be dangerous for residents and the people returning to their homes. Dr. Wilkins said this was the case in the rim fire in yosemite in 2013. The underground fire there wasnt tapped out until the following year. Tonight some family in santa cruz are grateful for muchneeded food and supplies. The Second Harvest food bank partnered with the california Fire Prevention to share information, hand out smoke alarms and give food to residents in santa cruz. Its one of many Second Harvest has organized since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The need has only grown because of the czu complex fire. If youre in need, you are welcome to stop by the food giveaway. You tonight even have to get out of your car. Organizers say they feed up to a thousand people every week. Its every friday, 9 00 to 1 00, and its a notouch drive through food distribution, so people can come through. They open their trunks. We put over 50 pounds of food in their trunk, and then they can drive off with no contact. Site been a really safe and effective way of getting people food each week. The food giveaway switches locations. Next friday, it will take place at the Santa Cruz County fair grounds in watsonville. And on the scu complex fire, we now know contain system at 35 . The fire has charred close to 373,000 acres. 38 structures have been destroyed if the fire, and five people have been hurt. Almost 2,000 personnel have been assigned to the scu fire. All right. So obviously firefighting weather conditions are in everyones mind, right . As we want those firefighters to get a chance to get their arms around more containment. So i wanted to start by taking a look at what the next 24 hours or so is going to look like. As you can see on futurecast, the good news is were not seeing extreme wind, right . Anything receiving less than 100 a week benefit from the edd, or if their employment is not covidrelated, or if theyre freelance gig or independent workers not paid on a w2 form such as steven. Millions of people who work in tourism, entertainment, travel, all of those Different Industries where people are independent contractors or self employed, those people deserve a settlement. Tonight some parents in Alameda County are pushing to have students return to schools. Right now the county isnt allowing schools to apply for a waiver for in person instruction, even though many counties in other parts of the bay area are doing so. One county official told us they figured they would be off the watch list before the waiver process became necessary, but parents say the time for waiting is over. Reporter in Alameda County, parents are frustrated and confused, as to why the Health Department will allow waivers for in person instruction. Contra costa county is accepting applications, Santa Clara County has even had some approved, but despite state guidelines allowing these waivers for elementary schools, Alameda County has said no. Why are other counties doing this and not Alameda County . If there is a reason i would love to hear it, but im not hearing the rationale. According to a recent report from Online Real Estate Company zillow, the citys rising house inventory has left empty homes flooding the city like nowhere else in america. Zillow said there are two reasons for this. One, of course, the high cost of owning a home in the city, and, two, more companies are actually allowing employees to work remotely, leading many employees to pack up and go live somewhere less expensive. Lake tahoe is going through a pandemic fueled housing boom on the other hand. Many are leaving their honestlies and apartments locally and buying up homes and property around lake tahoe since so many are working from home right now. The storm barreled over lake charles, louisiana, gusts up to 132 Miles Per Hour snapped trees, bent lampposts, and scattered debris. Structures that did survive suffered extensive damage from floodwaters. All of the windows in the living room are blown out. All of that side basically survived. This side is the one that got the damage and the leaves and the glass. Reporter heavy rain fell for hours in parts of texas and louisiana as lawyers moved through. But the storm surge was lower than forecast. Rescue crews say it made navigating the devastated region easy easier. Laura weakened as it moved away from the coast bit still caused extensive damage to trees and power lines in arkansas and mississippi. Hundreds of thousands remain without electricity, and officials estimate it could take days to fully assess the damage. People say they nome it will be a long road to rebuild. They could hear the wind at 140 miles an hour and hit the side of their homes with debris. Now they have to start the rebuilding process. So tell us what that exactly looks like. Theres a lack of resources, no power, no gas. What happens now . Yeah, what theyre doing initially is theyre grading off the most impacted area. Thats lake charles, and theyre sending urban search and rescue teams from all over the country to go in there to check for any survivors, to make sure there were people who stay bead mind there are hundreds of power trucks deployed down there to start restoring power in those areas. The fema supplies down there, the Salvation Army is serving thousands of meals. Theyve got inspectors down there taking a look at the damage. Really the key is to try and raise those lifelines, which is power, telecommunication, water, sewer. Those are the things that are focused on right now. In terms of the financial assistance, thats what a lot of families think of, how can i get the money rebuild. When does that come down the line . That will be within days. And the nice part about it is that fema has moved to an automated system. You used to have to go 20 what they call an assistance center. Now i cant be done online or through a mobile phone disasterassistance. Gov, and you can register, file your papers, start that process with electronic transfers now, money goes through the Banking System within a day or two, versus a long period before. So that is going to start rolling out. But what they want to do right now is just make sure that you get that infrastructure built back soup that people can start to rebuild their homes. Yeah, no kidding. And im look at these images here. Im just struck by how widespread the damage is and the flooding. Ive covered hurricanes before. I know it takes an immense amount of resources to go in and go to the roads by both to try to find survivors. Is that process still going on . And what do we think will happen once all of the water is receded . To your point, thats a very good one. With trees down and most of the power lines in that area are above ground, so the polls are knocked down, the wires are live. As the water starts to recede, that becoming a problem because its not just your ting typical water. They have wildlife, and chemical in them. Theres a lot of hazards still involved in trying to get through there. They need to open the streets before they can do much else. So youll see an awful lot of that going on. Tremendous amount of activity bay lot of different agencies. Not just government, but also nonprofit like red cross, Salvation Army, things of that nature. Yeah. No doubt. We were hoping to see it a little better today, but as you can see, the north bay is doing pretty well, but if you move farther to the south, you start to see more yellow, and look at livermore where they had that heat today, and fremont and san jose in the red.
