Barbershops were allowed to reopen in several Funeral Homes and places of worship. We are joined now after talking with salon owners and Health Officials. He joins us live with more. Reporter it has been a long time between haircuts in downtown walnut creek. Three months since it had to close. It has been hard. Within one hour there were 150 people on the list. A quickly and it is continuing to grow every day. Reporter they eased restrictions effective wednesday to allow hair salons to open provided they follow strict guidelines including social distancing, Wearing Masks and sanitation. Customers get there temperature taken. They allow for houses of worship and Funeral Homes to open for groups up to 100 people but no parking. This chapel and walnut creek is planning its First Service for friday. Groups of 20 were all that was allowed and before that eight. Cal fire units across our state are training hundreds of new season over crews to help battle wildfires this year. In Placer County a team of 30 recruits are in the middle of a week long Training Exercise were 120 acres will burn. This allows recruits to practice skills like fire lines safety, rescues, and emt skills. The training will last for two weeks. Joining us now to talk about the training and the threats we are facing during the up coming wild fire season we are joined by division chief jonathan cox. Always good to have you on here. Lets start with the training happening across the state. You typically bring on hundreds of seasonal firefighters. How do you make sure they are ready for what will be a challenging fire season . Thank you for having me. We are hiring firefighters across the state of california. We higher in waves. We are in the last phase of that wave of hiring. That is the Bolster Forces for the wildland fires that we are starting to see all across california due to warmer weather. These firefighters go through hundreds of hours of training. Their skills are refreshed from medicals bills to physical skills and we anticipate full staff later this month. As soon as they finish the training, i imagine they had out into the field. They are obviously needed immediately. We have had some fires across california right now. It seems as though you have been able to contain them thus far. The conditions it would seem are ripe for a very busy fire season. We did not have much rain over the last few months and now we are moving into the hot and dry summer months. How bad do you think this season will be . Thats right. We have seen an uptick over the last few weeks. We have had 15,000 acres of land that has burned across the state of california. We are trending well above 50 higher than we saw last year for fire activity. Our outlook is not good at this point. That is because of a few factors. Our fuels are dry at the moment. Across Northern California we have areas in severe doubt. We are seeing increased temperatures which are higher than normal across a lot of the areas. When these fires break out, they can burn quicker than if the moisture had been lower. That combination together with longterm drought we are seeing across the region are what concern us. They are the reason we are seeing that increased number of fires breaking out. Obviously, the fire does injure is concerning and in of itself. We are layering on top of that the fact we are in the middle of a pandemic. Many parts of california are seeing a spike in coronavirus cases. Public Health Officials have been telling everyone to stay home. You might have to tell people to leave their homes and grab what they can. What should people remember about potentially of vacuum waiting from a wildfire in the middle of a pandemic. That is a great question. The thing that we reinforce the everybody is that if you have to evacuate, what are you going to need at the minimum to ensure you can stay healthy your self. That is adding masks to your kids that you make have. It is ensuring you have medications for what you might need to be out of your home for a few days. It is communicating with friends and family that may live in the area, but not exactly your area. Coordinate and have a plan that if theres an emergency or an evacuation can i use your house as a place to evacuate to. I think everyone is skeptical about evacuating to and evacuation center. Coming up with those alternatives is more important than it has been in the past. It will be a much different fire season. Hopefully it is relatively calm. Fingers crossed. I think there has been a Tipping Point and americas conscious about race. What was okay yesterday is simply not okay today. There has been a history with a lot of Companies Using offensive racist imagery. Why has this been such a common approach for companies over the years . Look at uncle bens. They have consideration about making potential changes. Why has this approach been popular among large corporations . I think some brands like uncle bens and aunt jemima and now mrs. Butterworth for years and years it was okay to do that. It was for people that grew up with that. It was a sense of nostalgia. Your mom bought it so you bought it. What we are realizing is now that what is nostalgic for some people is traumatizing for others. Absolutely. We have seen beyond that jemima and uncle bens potentially changing their name, the band aids brand came out offering a variety of skin tones. You can see a lot of companies coming out and showing support for the black lives Matter Movement and racial equality. These are corporations. How heartfelt do you think these decisions are or are they purely business moves . Branding 101 is do not be associated with a racist stereotype. And i think the consumers are pretty smart. They will see through inauthentic redoing or refurbishing of their brands. Those to put their money where their mouth is and walk the talk, those are the companies that actually will get the most respect for their brand. With that being said, i assume that a name change, an image makeover for these brands, that is not going to be enough. They need to take it a step further and show their commitment to the issues of racial equality and issues brought to the forefront. How did they do that moving forward . That is a great question. The same thing happen with the Climate Change movement. Companies talked about being green and very quickly people found out that while they said they were green, they were not actually green. I think the same thing will happen now. What are the Companies Going to do to demonstrate they understand the moment that we are in . Injustice has gone far enough. They cannot be complicit in the Racial Injustice in this country. It is a fascinating conversation to have. More and more companies are making these similar moves and rebranding themselves.
