And on wall street stocks regained half of their losses from yesterday. We begin in the south bay where the santa claras ban on gatherings will take effect tomorrow. Ktvus Azenith Smith has more. Reporter businesses are bracing for the financial implications the ban could have, calling it uncertain times. The ban goes into effect at midnight and will last for three weeks. Reporter downtown san jose described as a ghost town as fears of coronavirus are keeping people away. Yesterday was one of the slowest nights on record. Reporter 10 parties have been canceled after facebook called off its developer conference. An estimated loss of 50,000. That is a lot of money on the table for Small Businesses like ours. Reporter he worries business will only get worse now that a ban in Santa Clara County prohibits large gatherings of more than a thousand people. So, with the events at sap center, the cirque du soliel, toby robins, are those just being canceled and when it comes to the sharks would they still play . Reporter yeah. As we know right now the events scheduled at the sap center for march have been canceled. No plans to postpone or reschedule those events at least that we know of and as for the San Jose Sharks, that is a possibility. That there could be games without fans in attendance. This afternoon officials said out of 10 cases in the county so far, six people contracted the virus through community spread. The county declared a Public Health emergency. The guidance is aimed at people in high risk groups, including the elderly and people with Underlying Health conditions. We understand the recommendations may impact our lives and be difficult to implement. We considered them carefully with the state and other counties. The west Contra Costa County School District says a relative of a student has tested positive for the coronavirus. Students related to the person they will stay home but no students or staff have tested positive for the virus. All 90 Catholic Schools operated by the archdiocese of San Francisco are closed for the next two weeks. Officials say a student at an Unidentified School tested positive for coronavirus. The 90 schools are in three counties, San Francisco, marin and san mateo. Ktvus amber lee is at a school that is among those being closed. Reporter we are just outside st. Peters school on Florida State just off of 24th street. Parents tell me they are not surprised given the increase in coronavirus cases and it is a challenge balancing work with child care. Reporter here at st. Peters elementary school, in the heart of San Franciscos mission district, working parents are scrambling to figure out what to do with their children. The archdiocese decided to close all 90 schools in San Francisco, marin and san mateo competentes starting thursday. I let my boss know right away. Frustrating. I have to plan b. I am not sure. The San Francisco Public Health department confirmed an archdiocese of San Francisco student tested positive for covid19. Additional diagnosed of covid 19 across our schools are likely. She is lucky to have that option thanks to her employer. She will accommodate me and i will do some work from home but i wont be able to get the full time work i was getting before. Cal suspended in person class in favor of online courses. Today was the first day of the online classes for the 40,000 students. So far the good news is no one connected with the campus has been diagnosed with coronavirus or is in quarantine. People got off the grand princess cruise ship in oakland today. It is anticipated by the end of the day tomorrow, perhaps only the 1100 crew will be left on board. And it will set sale from oakland, destination, unknown. The jury took only a few hours to reach the verdict. Ktvus Jana Katsuyama talked to the family outside of the courthouse today and she is here now with their reaction. Reporter this has been an emotional and dramatic trial with outburses by john cowell, the defendant and testimony by nia wilsons sisters who were there when she died but this is only the first part of the trial which continues tomorrow. Reporter family members erupted in an emotional chant outside the courthouse calling out the name of nia wilson. The 18yearold who was stabbed in the neck and killed at oaklands b. A. R. T. Station, july 22, 2018. The jury deliberated only two hours. They found 29yearold john cowell guilty of first degree murder for nia wilsons death. Guilty of attempted murder for stabbing her sister that same night and guilty of a special circumstance of lying in wait, concealing his intent and killing her. I was trying to eat, i couldnt eat. We got here and i thank the good lord for his blessings. Shocking the verdict came in so quick. I was on the way home and i got the phone call at 4 18 p. M. Reporter john cowell was in court, clapping twice, he was silent and showed no emotion when the verdict was read. A stark contrast from previous outbursts. For the family, the guilty verdict is only a temporary relief. Wednesday begins the second phase as the jury determines whether john cowell was insane during the attack. We half way there. Surveillance video, showing john cowell stabbing nia wilson and her sister in the neck. John cowells defense attorney said john cowell has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and his minds was divorced from reality at the time of the attack. The prosecutor said in Court Tuesday i am not disputing he has a Mental Health issue but i am disputing it played a role in the stabbing. During the trial, he noted john cowell changed his clothes, wiped his knife clean and tried to throw police off his trail. I feel that he is not crazy. He is not crazy. Reporter if the jury finds john cowell sane, he could face life in prison without the possibility of patrol. If he is found insane, he would be sent to a state mental hospital. The state is monitoring 10,300 people who came into california on evacuation flights. Contra costa county declared a state of emergency saying the virus appears to be circulating in the community. And Alameda County announced one new case today, bringing the total to three cases. San francisco says it hopes to prevent the sprod of covid19 in the homeless population. The mayor visited the navigation center. The mayor says plans are in place to isolated Homeless Individuals who may become infected. The Santa Clara District Attorneys Office cleared the Police Officers who shot and killed the gunman at last years gilroy garlic festival shooting. The 19yearold shooter killed three people and injured 17 others at the festival last july. The district Attorneys Offices reports includes pictures of the gun and ammunition and as well as the fence. Three officers shot the gunman within a minute of the attack. The report called the officers actions unquestionably lawful and justified. New at 10 00 p. M. Reporter two california Highway Patrol officers heading to a crash on highway 101 monday night. They are doing a traffic break, slowing down cars. All of a sudden driving along, they see a green beam of light. Reporter as they drove south, there was more bright light. The cabin just fills with green light. It looks like a green laser hit a mirror. Reporter chp officer says the officers were lucky they didnt get hurt. They noticed the car speed past and radioed another officer on the golden gate bridge. The one vehicle that gets by is easy to find. The chp pulled over this car. They found this laser pointer in the car. And arrested the driver, a 24 yearold. The chp says he told officers he just wanted people to getute of his way. He said the chp did a phenomenal job with the arrest. I give kudos to them. They said he may have done more than he should have. There were other calls at different locations about somebody shining a laser into vehicles. Reporter this may be a first.
