Nine. This is our version of white christmas. Foggy christmas. Right . Well, you know what, christmas is getting closer. I know this may be a time when people are taking time off. Schools are out. My boys are counting the hours. I bet a lot of people are flying. You know what happens when there is fog in town, there are delays. Absolutely. Maybe you are a little tired, theres a survey about whether or not you sleep on planes. I try to. Sleep judge. Com says 61 of passengers have a difficult time sleeping in a coach seat. The survey revolt the window seat is actually the worst spot to sleep on a long flight, the best is actually to put on the tray table and use it to rest your head on, i dont get that, ive never done that. The middle of the plane was also the best to get sleep. If i were to pick, i would pick the window seat. I feel like theres something to lean against. Yeah, why do they say the window seat is the worst . I dont know. You . I dont know, i like the aisle seat so i can get up whenever i want. I took a trip several years ago, we will take a redeye, so we can all sleep. And then have a full day when we get there. No one slept, not even the babies. No doubt a lot of lawmakers are already home after taking long flight back to their district, leaving washington dc. And now home for the holidays. The impeachment of President Trump remains at an impasse this morning. How Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she wants and the articles of impeachment to the senate were President Trump will face a trial until it she is sure the process will be there. Republic and leaders say the delay shows the democrats dont have confidence in their case against the president. This is by far the fitness basis for any past president ial impeachment in american history. Rescuers are getting cold feet. In front of the entire country. My republican colleagues, our message is a simple one. Democrats want a fair trial, that examines the relevant facts. We want a fair trial. Senators mcconnell and schumer met yesterday but could not agree on the terms of a senate trial. Democrats want to call witnesses, including some key trumpet ministration officials, but senator mcconnell has said he has no intention of conducting a long trial. No further action is expected anytime soon and lawmakers are now on a two week holiday. In the wake of the impeachment, final democratic debate of the year was held at Loyola Marymount university in southern california. Seven candidates on stage for the. It gave them more time to showcase their platforms. Greg thought all this morning, good to have you. Lets talk about last night. We saw some sparring. Absolutely. Good morning to you, this was 24 hours this debate started after the president was impeached. There was talk it might overshadow last night, that was certainly not the case. Like you said, this was the Smallest Group of candidates we have seen on stage so far. And it made a difference, a real chance for these president ial hopefuls to make their point and make their case for why they should be the nominee. Andrew yang. Seven democratic potential candidates took the debate stage for the last time in 2019. The day after the house voted to impeach President Trump. The most corrupt president in american history, its not a question of political expediency. Its not a question of political tactics, its a question of right and wrong. Stop being obsessed over impeachment, which unfortunately strikes Many Americans like a ball game, where you know what the score is going to be. Start actually digging in and solving the problems that got donald trump elected in the first place. Article 2 is adopted. While the historic vote kick things off, it quickly moved the substantial issue, where candidates views differ, Climate Change, foreign relations, student loans, the economy. Including the new trade deal with canada and mexico. We have better labor standards, better environmental standards, and a better deal when it comes to the pharmaceutical provision. It is not going to stop outsourcing. Is not going to stop corporations from moving to mexico. Reporter we saw flareups between candidates, including one spurred by criticism of mayor Pete Buttigieg Fundraising Efforts with big donors, putting a recent event in nassau county. Billionaires in wine caves should not pick the next president of the united states. If i pledge, if i pledge never to be in the company of a Progressive Democratic donor, i couldnt be up here. Senator, your net worth is 100w9. Reporter more fireworks over healthcare. I was you how we are paying for it right now. The average worker in america, their family makes 60,000 a year. That family is out paying 12,000 a year for healthcare. Some say it costs 40. The idea that you are going to be able to save that person, making 60,000 a year on medicare for all, its absolutely preposterous about a month and a half from the iowa caucuses, new polls show most democrats dont know for sure who they will vote for. Leading candidates making their pitches. This is a dark moment in america. And yet i come here tonight with a heart filled with hope. Help us build that future, to find exclusion, by belonging. Real change always takes place from the bottom on up. Never from the top on down. we got a level of the American People, dont play games. Tell them the truth and be authentic. Reporter now, because of the smaller format, we heard more from candidates that didnt get as much time as the front runners in the earlier debates, including bay area billionaire tom steyer, we spoke with sire during the last hour here on mornings on 2, we asked if he doesnt like he gets enough talk time during the debate. My job is to take advantage of my opportunities to talk directly to the American People and explain, there is a broken government here, its been bought by corporations. Ive been taking on those corporations as an outsider. With coalitions of american citizens, and beating those corporations for a decade. If i get a chance to say that on national tv, im never going to complain about it. During last nights debate, mr. Stier reminded the crowd of the public impeachment campaign. He started it more than two years ago, as well as touting his focus on tackling Climate Change. For more insight on last nights debate, join by senior politico writer, joe carefully, thank you for being here as always. Good to be here. Treatment certainly the elephant in the room. But this was a very short question the beginning, we surprised by that . I was not surprised. There is nothing to gain there, they were all on the same page. They wanted it to be a fair trial, but they wanted to be over with quickly, because they dont want to be taken off the campaign trail. It felt like last night was the opportunity to see real differences on topics as it relates to Climate Change, the economy, usmc a, do you feel like that really benefited and we saw and impact of that smaller stage . Absolutely. For the candidates like klobuchar and buttigieg, 20 of the voters have no opinion of them. Klobuchar took advantage of us big time, we got to learn a lot more about her, she showed her differences with bernie on the trade deal. And she got to take on people to judge. It was not a good night for mayor pete. I want to talk about that, he has been raising his stock in iowa as it were. We saw him feel the pain of that, because not only did Amy Klobuchar go after him, but there was kind of that key moment of the night when senator Elizabeth Warren went after him about the wine cave. The wine caves, napa, napa made an appearance last night. That he handles himself on those attacks . It is good for him in the long term in one way, he showed he can handle attacks, goes back and forth a little bit. In the long run, it was bad for him, it highlighted his lack of experience. He is the mayor of a city that is smaller than antioch. And his competitors called him out for that. He was also called out for the fact that he was until recently, held a lot of his fundraisers, all those fundraisers behind closed doors with no prospect that is literally changing in the last week or two. So in a democratic primary were but big money is the enemy, billionaires and millionaires are the enemy, that is not a good look when you are taking that big money. Warren and sanders do not hold those types of fundraisers. Connected senator klobuchar and been senator warren and if it after going after them . Did it make them look like they were frontrunners or they were making a move for some of those polling that had gone towards mayor pete . I think they are both competing with him for different types of voters. Both warren and Pete Buttigieg are looking at those highly educated, welltodo white folks. And midwest, both bashar and Pete Buttigieg sort of fashion themselves as children of the midwest, sort of that midwestern sensibility, so they were both had something to gain from it. We talk about the smaller format, we talked to some tom steyer this morning. We certainly got to hear more from then then we had in the past, who took advantage of that opportunity . I thought they both had pretty decent nights. Yang has a great sense of humor, you got to see that. He also had some poignant moments, talked about his child with special needs. Stier got to talk about he is now the champion of Climate Change in the race. He got to do that, that resonates with younger voters. He got to say he also highlighted his business experience, you know and in a very sort of oblique way, the man was Hedge Fund Manager who became a billionaire, he did build the business up. I dont know how far he wants to take that again in the primary, because of the billionaire sort of phobia democrats have. But when he says im a businessman, i can go toe to toe with trump. Yes, but that might not get you too far in iowa. We heard a lot of issues discussed last night. But what we did here in california, in los angeles, certainly important to the bay area, anything about housing or homelessness. Was not a missed opportunity . This was pathetic, we wrote that in the chronicle about the other day. We want to hear about homelessness, we didnt hear about what to do about 130,000 people in the streets in our state. We didnt hear anything about the high cost of housing. We heard a mention about wildfires from klobuchar, it was a missed opportunity by the moderators and by the candidates. Who really moved the meter last night . We have been critical of joe biden but i thought he held his own. He held his own, but a lot of us are keeping him in a low bar. Though lobar, you didnt screw up, didnt have a gap, you are giving on them the next day. He was solid, definitely had better explanations for his Health Care Plan or version of healthcare. Klobuchar definitely moved the needle last night. Joe, thank you as always. As we always like to say, my favorite answer, who won last night . I will not say. Not america. Im going to say klobuchar was one of the winners last night. There you go. Gentlemen, thank you. Quite the reputation you are getting there. I dont know where that is coming from. Coming up on mornings on 2 the nine, the flu season has started. Doctors have a warning for us today. Centers for Disease Control and prevention are seeing a number jump in people coming down with the flu so early and that is only ramping up. What they have to say is so unusual about this flu season. Plus you dont get to ambush me after deputy involved shooting. He had a serious heart attack this afternoon. Human traffickers . Im your man. There is a new sheriff in town on the series premier of deputy right here on ktvu, well talk with the lead of that show and i bet you will recognize him from his show on detective. Mike bloombergs never been afraid of tough fights, the ones that make a true difference in peoples lives. And mikes won them, which is important right this minute, because if he could beat americas biggest gun lobby, helping pass background check laws and defeat nra backed politicians across this country, beat big coal, helping shut down hundreds of polluting plants and beat big tobacco, helping pass laws to save the next generation from addiction. All against big odds you can beat him. Im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Following breaking news on the tropical are in san jose, we have been talking about this for the last few hours. This is a picture of this crane that flipped over on 237 near north first street, right on the boundary between san jose and o. P. S. This crane, it is a 500 capable 510 capable crane. Can lift 500 pounds, it is not a 500 ton crane, it is heavy, they cannot move it without getting another crane into right the crane and move it out of the way. This is an allday thing. One person was injured in the crash, that person was taken to the hospital. We dont know their condition. Another bus and car were involved, but again, avoid 237. This is not going anywhere. This probably will impact the afternoon commute as well. Could be evening commute, you dont see that everyday. For sure, long day. Lets talk about the weather we are dealing with today, not too bad just yet. Foggy, foggy for most, not for all. But for many. And how they have mostly sunny, there will be 60s for temperatures there for a few. If you are in that fog, boy, it is thick. Jim said he feels like rip van winkle, said he mustve slept through winter since it looks like june, it is june gloom. You have been sleeping for six months. Joe jackson says foggy air in the marina in pittsburgh, very dense. Concord was down to zero visibility, now a quarter of a mile. Fairfield has been zero to less than a mile. Novato, petaluma, still at zero. Santa rosa now at one. 101 court or, petaluma parks, thats been really foggy. Sfo even with halfmile, livermore one mile, then carlos down to too. Although hayward says 10 and 10 for san jose. They have mostly sunny skies down there. A lot of cloud cover will be inching towards us. The weekend system though, it looks like cloud cover develops and wind on saturday, then sunday morning early is when this comes through. Thatll be a rainmaker, you guys for sunday. Okay . Thank you. W sheriff is coming. This interview is not ready yet, we will get back to it. We will go to to something else. Its a familiar face from what im told when i talk about deputy coming up. Lets talk about whats happening on bart. New numbers out show shoe bart Police Officers and workers are stopping when it comes to fair of asian. Many people think these numbers dont look good. Specifically, far more African American bart reigers being targeted. Summer thing its a case of racial bias. One person shot and police are still looking for the gunman. We live in the city of san jose with the latest on the investigation. There are those who will say that youre too fat. Too skinny. Too hard. Too soft. Too old. Too much. Too unexpected. Too limited. And to them we say too bad. Because at kaiser permanente, we believe that everyone deserves the right to thrive. A new sheriff is coming to ktvu. Season premiere is right after the holidays on january second. It is called deputy. This morning we are talking to the sheriff himself, Stephen Dorff is joining us this morning, good morning to you. Good morning, how are you . Im well, thank you. I love cop shows, i cannot lie, i know i will be watching the show. This puts you as a sheriff, you get there kind of in an unusual premise, then you take over. Tell us what happens next. Yeah, i mean basically, bill hollister, who i play as a deputy, he is out solving crime, but he is now given the interim job of being the sheriff of la county, which is like a lifechanging possibility. Basically, he has a normal guy that is not going to change with this new position of power, so he brings the same deputy kind of style that he had into this position. He still wants to be out on the streets solving crimes, so its kind of a balance of, a shift in how to deal with the immense responsibility. At the same time, what he really love to do, not being political meetings, he wants to be out on the street with his guys solving crimes. Right, its kind of refreshing to see a character like this. Because we think of the sheriff of the county is being you know, a politician essentially. We see these scenes of you driving your bronco, by the way nice bronco you get to drive there. Just being kind of the edgy guy. This is, you know you think this is what Law Enforcement needs in some communities. Yeah, i think that is part of whats happening within the season that fans can expect. As bill becomes comfortable in this position, its a position that is putting a lot of stress on his home life, and obviously the world around him and his personal life. But at the same time, i think he realizes he is really enjoying this job by putting his own two cents and putting on his instincts, not necessarily always saying the most politically correct thing. Hes got a lot of people against him, because of his attitude. Hes a little rough around the edges, is that what you are saying . Yeah, i think he is rough around the edges but he is also the peoples champion. So ultimately i think if he decides to run, which is coming towards the end of the season, as his time is running out here, in his interim position, he will have to run as an elected official. We will see how the people respond. You know, i like the fact that you are playing a sheriff in la county. I know you grew up in la. Is it strange . Or is it cool to be, even if it is a fictional sheriff of a place where you grew up . Yeah, it is really neat. It is neat to have gone to work with the Sheriffs Department and to have gone to kind of educate myself on how big the Sheriff Department is in la county, you know . Just so much ground they cover, you know . So much more than the lapd. You know i never really knew that. Also, just incredible guys that ive met, technical advisors. We have three in particular, they have just been a huge asset in making the show as authentic as we can make it. I have a lot of respect for all Law Enforcement, but really the Sheriffs Department has been really forthcoming with wanting to help us and im really excited for people to finally get to see it. Stephen dorff, thank you for joining us. I look forward to seeing the show. I like that you bring to it. Thanks for joining us here. Yeah, thank you, man. Appreciate it. Happy holidays. We continue to follow developing news in san jose. Thats right, one person was shot and police are still searching for the gunman. Ktvus Elissa Harrington is at the scene with what neighbors heard overnight. Reporter behind me is the victims car, you can see a park there right on the corner. Please tell me that the victim had just exited the vehicle, was confronted by somebody on the street, something happened, some sort of confrontation, that is when shots were fired. They say the victim was struck several times, suffered life threatening injuries, and was transported to the hospital. A few neighbors cars were hit by bullets as well. Police say that the suspect ended up getting into a waiting vehicle, drove away. As they were driving, kept firing out the window. I got the chance to speak with a couple of neighbors this morning about what they heard and saw. At 240 5 00 am this morning, then shot and hearing somebody take off. I was studying and i heard a loud crash or a bang. A car alarm went off. I went downstairs and i looked at our curtain to see what house it was coming from. And i heard a woman in distress and either one man or two were calming her down or just like talking to her. I just heard commotion and a bang, like a window kind of breaking. I thought thats what it was. Thought it was just somebody fighting in the streets. Police say the shooting happened around 2 45 am around the intersection of mattherhorn drive and bronco drive. They say one man was shot, the victim was taken to the hospital where he is still being treated with life threatening injuries. At this time, no suspects have been identified. The motive remains under investigation. One thing police did tell me though is that the victim in h again, they do not know a motive at this time. Live in san jose, Elissa Harrington, ktvu fox 2 news. Coming up on mornings on 2 the nine, there are certain holiday hazards that might be sidelined after santas visit. Next talk with emergency room doctor from sf general about the most common injuries he sees that come with people trying to make mary and celebrate the holidays. Kaiser Mental Health workers are finishing a five day strike. Why they say they may take action again if things dont change. You know when you go to ross for a few gifts and realize. Oh yeah you shouldve gotten a cart . Thats yes for less. Get gifts for everyone on your list and save 20 to 60 percent off Department Store prices. At ross. Yes for less. Itreat them all as if, they are hot and energized. Stay away from any downed wire, call 911 and call pg e right after so we can both respond out and keep the public safe. We are staying on top of breaking news in the south bay where a crane is blocking several lanes of eastbound 237. This is what it looked like earlier this morning. You can see the crane, it was diesel spill on the roadway as well. Atvs jesse gary is live with new developments. Reporter good morning to you, you are looking at the crane as it sits on its side. So you are looking at the top of the crane where those workmen are standing. They are actually working on the top portion of the train. The tires are on the bottom, on the opposite side of the truck. The top of it is the right side and the left side of the crane is against the ground. This crane tipped over around 6 00 this morning, it was traveling westbound or from right to left across your Television Screen. When it swerved to avoid traffic, the driver lost control and the crane tipped over. We have a second crane coming in, im guessing the second crane is going to be used to pick up or help move the first crane. So you get an idea of what the crane looks like. Anyway, the crane driver lost control. The crane tipped over, and blocked all of the eastbound lanes. Right now, all eastbound lanes are still blocked. One westbound lane is blocked as a kind of squeeze traffic through. It was 100 galion gallons of fuel and hydraulic fluid. The oil spilled all over 237, which they have to clean up. They are in the process of doing that right now. Now as you can see, they brought in the second crane to try to lift the first crane. I guess thats what these workers are doing. Chp is on route here, they have some officers here, but they are going to have a spokesperson head out to meet us in a couple of minutes. Hopefully we can give you another update before the end of the broadcast. In the short term, you want to avoid 237 out of here going east or west. But definitely used, because all of those lanes are blocked. West use a backup, you can see on your Television Screen right now, the backup of traffic if you are heading the opposite direction. So if you are headed eastbound onto 37, you are not going to be able to do it. If you are headed westbound, itll be delayed. Try to avoid the area. Again, they just brought in a second crane to try i believe, to lift the first one, which has toppled after the driver swerved to avoid traffic. There are a couple of injuries, but we dont have information on exactly the severity or the nature of this. Will try to get that for you as well, guys . All right, jesse gary, a lot of work ahead, thanks. A judge is holding a hearing to consider the request for a man killing and woman at a bart station. The group will ask a judge to unseal a grand jury transcript from this case. Mia wilson was stabbed to death on the platform of the Macarthur Bart station in oakland of july of last year. Authorities later arrested john and his trial will begin january six. The first amended coalition argues the entire transcript should be unsealed, because some information has already come out. Such as the fact that cal had a backpack with prescription drugs inside. New this morning, new reports show there are still dramatic Racial Disparities as to who is excited when it comes to bart tracking down on stairs. The 12,000 issued from july to june last year, 46 went to africanamerican writers. According to bart surveys, only 12 of bart writers are African American. Now, the agency says, the figures are not evidence of bias. Bart says civilian officers walk through train cars or stand at an entryway and they ask every passenger to show it ticket or card. Also this morning, there had been problems with the boeing test flight to the International Space station. Earlier today, the Aerospace Company announced its star liner spacecraft did not reach the proper orbit needed to dock with the space station. This capsule was carrying a mannequin to see how smooth things would go. Then boeings plan was to start shoveling astronauts into shape space as early as next year. The u. S. Senate is demanding answers from the ceo of pg e about the impact of wildfire on the electric grid. Bill johnson told senators when the utility might be able to end the use of deliberate power shut off, to prevent wildfires. For us in northern california, itll take us probably five years to get to the point where we can largely eliminate this tool. There are number of things we can do to narrow the scope, narrow the duration. We have better predictive capability. Better technology. Johnson also told the senate panel that pg e is planning to put more lines underground, but said that is costly and can make it more difficult to diagnose future issues. The holidays are time to spend with family and friends, exchange presents and of course celebrate. What you should not be concerned about is making a trip to the emergency room. To stay safe during the festival days, we are joined by the chief of emergency medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco general hospital, big welcome to doctor chris, thank you for being here, appreciate it. Thank you for having me. For five years ago i was in the emergency room on Christmas Morning. It was towards the end of opening up all the gifts, children are excited, i went to go get one last gift, went down, bent over and my back went out. Could not move, couldnt get off the floor, had to crawl into my car, my mom drove me to the emergency room. Luckily i made it home by christmas dinner. Thats all it took, a little bending over and boom, the back goes out. Absolutely. Its those little injuries, we certainly see that. The holidays are here, they have been here for some of us for a little while now. Its an exciting time, but at the time that we do want to be careful and there are certain angels dangers that come with the holidays. I want ask you about head injuries, theres bikes, scooters, skis, a lot of people had up to the mountain and go skiing right away. Do you see a lot of head injuries on Christmas Morning or around christmas . Inexorably around the holidays, not just Christmas Morning. Some comes from what you talk about, theres also you are out of school, doing activities that we are doing all summer, and we are forgetting to wear our helmets, even some of the basic safety issues as a get back into it we need to really remember. When you do treat these head injuries, you are treating people who did have a helmet on or did not . Many dont have it. Some do. You can still get injured but it is really fickle that we are waiting helmets, bicycles, skiing, the types of things where we can see that injuries from that. I know christmas night, my wife kicks me out of the chicken kitchen, she likes to prepare the meal herself. Im not a good chef, so im okay with that but im curious about the kitchen injuries, people who want to cook, i would maybe cut a finger, do you get a lot of those injuries as well . There is that, holidays bring out activities that maybe we are not used to, even hanging holiday ornaments and those types of things. Letters, up on a roof. Might not have been on the roof for the whole year. Might be a little different now. Being careful about those activities. Than the other aspect of the holidays that is both wonderful but challenging, we bring in alcohol a lot. Nobody is saying you cannot indulge, but perhaps the timing of the indulging needs to be very careful about that. Would you say that is the number one injury you see, alcoholrelated . Audibly above all things, yes. Particularly people that are carving a turkey that are not used to it, but maybe they have added alcohol as well. And some of the other activities. So we can certainly indulge the holidays, but perhaps in moderation and careful of the timing. Sometimes we talk about Christmas Tree fires. Even on the show, we have talked about being safe when you get those trees, watering the trees. The electrical wires and the lights, they dont happen too often, you also worked in colorado, but here also at ucsf, have you seen injuries elated to fires this time of year . Absolutely. Sometimes at the equipment that we have used for many many years and now is worn out. Being careful about that agreement, making sure some of it that needs to be replaced, be careful with that. Even the flu. I know its not a christmas thing, but it is that time of year, how has it been in your emergency room . We are starting to see a pickup with the flu. We are worried about what the flu season will look like an absolutely now that we will be in those quarters with family, thatll be another issue to deal with. My sister was a nurse, i pursued the nurses and doctors who work on christmas, especially during the holiday season, thank you for doing what you do. We are happy to be here. Hopefully we can all agree the goal would be wont have to see me over the holidays. Yes, im not getting the gifts, i will of the children do it. Im sitting straight up on the couch. Moderation, being careful and enjoying the holidays. Thank you very much, happy holidays. Lets talk more about the flu, nationwide, centers for Disease Control and prevention is already reporting 2. 6 million flu related illnesses this year and they expect many more to come. Reporter jonathan has more from atlanta on this early flu season and what doctors say is so unusual. Reporter flu season this year is in full swing and showing no signs of slowing down. We have half of our hockey team that was out of school today, because strep throat and flulike symptoms. The cdc says theres an unusual twist to this flu season. They are seeing more cases of the influenza b string, which hits children particularly hard and generally isnt seen until late winter or early spring. We have seen this before. In the 90s, and in past flu seasons, but usually we would see influenza a predominate early in the season. The cdc is reporting increased collectivity in every state except alaska. In 23 states, theyve experienced widespread selectivity. Doctors in those states warning parents against self diagnosing family members as the flu spreads. People talk about colds and the flu, in one phrase. People have the sense that the flu is just like a bad cold. I think that is the problem. It is still too early to tell if the season will be worse than others.
